I could do without Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast... There aren't many, but they do have some stinkers.. like most of More, some bits of Ummagumma and Final Cut. San Tropez is pretty bad.
I must have heard apb perhaps 50 times before it hit me that the first piece ends on the steaming pot, which is lit with the 3 (or 4?) match strikes in the beginning, then the music takes you on a light hearted journey over rolling meadows; i think i associated it to a train ride because of the suggestion of steam. I know.... crazy! Anyways, this song, which i had merely just played in the background without paying much attention to, turned out, to me, as being one of their most musically creative pieces (at least honorable mention); i think it lives up to its name. After this discovery, i relistened to the entire album again, and repeatedly. Eventually i considered ahm to be the most under-rated floyd album and maybe obscurred by clouds. Up through the 2000s i would have said meddle was most under-rated but i think technology exposing more people to echoes helped boost meddle's popularity. Wish i had data to support it but it's just a hunch.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Thank you Roger Waters for the sweet vocals & signature lyrics. Thank you David Gilmour for the background haunting guitars. Thank you Rick Wright for filling the daydream-like keyboards and Nick Mason for his restraint percussions.
If I were a swan, I'd be gone If I were a train, I'd be late And if I were a good man, I'd talk with you more often than I do If I were to sleep, I could dream If I were afraid, I could hide If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain If I were the moon, I'd be cool If I were a rule, I would bend If I were a good man, I'd understand the spaces between friends If I were alone, I would cry And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry And if I go insane, will you still let me join in with the game? If I were a swan, I'd be gone If I were a train, I'd be late again If I were a good man, I'd talk with you more often than I do
I love this song. Quite underrated imo. I really started liking some of their older stuff. This one's great - perhaps mostly with the lyrics. I really like them, they always remind me of something. "If I were a good man I'd talk with you more often than I do"
I rediscovered this song just a few months ago when I saw Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets perform it in Philadelphia, and I have now added it to my "repertoire" of songs I bring to my local guitar jamming circle. The song probably went right over my head when I heard it as a teenager in the early 1970s, but listening to the lines about wishing to be a better friend now at age 62 just goes right to the core of the many regrets one accumulates over the years.
If, Summer of 68, Paintbox, Astronomy Domine, Woth Us The Deal, Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, Matilda Mother, Fearless, Julia Dream, some of the great songs before their age of conceptual progressive albums.

It does beat hip hop but David Bowie said in 93 the only people he thought were writing good lyrics were the Rappers....90's Rap was best then Eminem 50 dropped and blew everyone away and the good thing is Em was influenced by Rock also...hip hop was gone by 2005 apart from odd album from one of the greats...anything after is new generation which old hop hop heads don't feel lol...Groups like Beastie boys Wu Tang Cypress Hill and Gangstarr plus artists like Nas Redman Eminem LL Cool J Mobb deep Busta Rhymes Tupac were all masters of their craft plus heaps more from old school but at heart I'm a rocker and Pink Floyd are my favorite...
@@majahcorcoran782Fair enough, but hip-hop or rap etc. will be groundbreaking to some, but not to millions who still prefer instruments and real vocal range. As great as many feel Tupac or Biggie are/were, their music will never grab the emotions of say Floyd or Mozart. Not to mention the longevity of the melody. To each his own.
This is one of the biggest and greatest bands of all time. You just stumbled upon one of their very early and obscure albums that is endeared by its hardcore fans.
One of the most underrated cuts in the Floyd catalogue.

Such a pity Roger Waters is now a deluded prick

I would like that everyone here start listen to Peter Hammill without feeling offended.
Indeed!
...me too..!!!
The first song in Floyd's discography to acknowledge Syd Barret's growing madness, and Roger's regrets for leaving him behind.
There a lot more of Syd condition in IF - HEY YOU than in WYWH {The single}
One of Waters' finest songwriting example.
And vocals tho
This song just reduces me to crumbs. What a poignant, bitter-sweet sentiment.
