  • Liam Ó Maonlaí is probably best known as lead singer for the Hothouse Flowers, one of the biggest bands in Ireland in the 90’s, and still loved today. As a band they are still producing music and Liam continues to collaborate with the band and with all of Ireland’s best musicians today.
Liam is passionate about the Irish language, his songs are steeped in a mystical spirituality, particularly Songs From The Rain. In this interview we hear not only the story behind some of the songs but he also plays 5 beautiful stirring versions. He plays a song from Songs From The Rain, he plays a completely apt song for the Covid times we are in called Worry Not, also a hauntingly beautiful song that can be used in a Catholic mass written by Seán Ó Riada, and a Sean-nos song. Sean-nos is a very traditional way of singing Irish traditional music. All of this, as well as Liam’s exceptional musicianship and his contemplative spirit gives this interview a unique feel.

This was absolutely amazingly beautiful. Liam speeks from the bottom of my heart. I can`t even explain it in human words.
This is exactly what he said. Some emotions, some universal knowing is bejond words.
I get angry at times, for not beeing able to express the downloads and visions I get into words. I get so nervous and run from one side of the room to the other, trying to find out, how to express it. Then I wrote a novel, desguising some of the knowlage in a fantsay/fairy tale genre. It was an outlet, like music is to others, or painting, or poetry.
What I also learnt is, that you can`t convince people of truth or insights. They feel overwhelmed or dictated. My job was and still is to just "bring my ship to float", and whoever is ready, will benefit from it. This is what the old scriptures in the Bible tell you as well. For example:
"... Father; 28 and I will give him the morning star. He who has an ear, let him hear."
The phrase: He who has an ear, let him hear", is used many, many times in scripture.
The teacher arrives, when the pupil is ready.
Blessings from Rose-Cottage, Schurwald Forest, Germany.

Oh, how beautiful and true. Thank you for sharing your words. My thought. When the nervous system is sufficiently integrated, then the truth enlightens rather than overwhelming. The process is two fold. Expanding consciousness and physical evolution of the nervous system. Like the two feet carrying one forward on the path to Union. Tenderest love and respect.

An absolute privilege to hear insights and musings from a man who has always touched me with his music in bands etc and now, as I age in my home studio and discover the spiritual thread that has been woven through my connections with the music industry (mainly in sound and production) I realise that the thread comes from a seed that is planted in some of us to write music, in some to perform and play instruments and then, like me, to arrange and produce, mix and make others sound good (many are naturally talented) which explains why I have never had the desire to be on stage despite many musicians saying that I have a better understanding of the structure and arrangement of music than they do...but I am happy doing my job, a part in a grand production and not for fame or wealth, but the satisfaction of playing my part, planting a seed or two and perhaps inspiring another soul to write from the heart... a gift for sure!

Liam, I have searched for live recordings of Hothouse Flowers songs, but had no luck with anything of good quality. You should do some acoustic sets and release on UA-cam and Spotify.

42:00 Liam speaks so strongly, lovingly, respectfully of his own culture... and understandably so, and as it should be.. yet the world over (these days) "they" are making our connection and appreciation for our own personal cultures... a bad thing... sad where we are headed....
