This song was inspired by the Falklands War, which was going on when Dire Straits lead singer Mark Knopfler wrote the song. The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and the UK over islands off the coast of Argentina that each country claimed rights to. The islands are British territories, but in 1982 Argentina tried to reclaim one of the islands. Britain reclaimed their territories, but lost 258 soldiers in the conflict.
In this song, Mark Knopfler sings about a soldier who is dying on the battlefield, surrounded by his comrades, who remain by his side as he slips away. It's a look at the folly of war and the plight of those who fight them. "We've got just one world but we live in different ones," he told the BBC. "It's just stupid, it really is. We're just foolish to take part in anybody's war."

Mark Knopfler is a virtuoso making his guitar elicit emotions and (as you pointed out) knowing when to play and when not to play. With Dire Straits he was the main driver but with his solo work and collaborations in more recent years he does a masterful job of allowing other musicians to take the lead throughout songs - but in all cases his guitar work is superb. Too many to list - but check out some of his post Dire Straits stull.

Give me chills every time; and the way he can make his guitar weep! Mark wrote this song in response to the Brits involvement in the Falklands war (1982): He actually lost a friend in that conflict, which might explain why he seems so emotional whenever he performs this one during concerts. Speaking of which, you are missing out on a brilliant live performance of this track (and signature spine-tingling solo) if you don't check out their live performance of this track from "On the Night". The song is written from the perspective of a mortally wounded soldier. In 2007, Mark rereleased the track and dedicated the proceeds to those still suffering from the effects of that conflict. The last line of the song is often overlooked, but is perhaps the most important, "we are fools to make war on our brother in arms"; I understand he meant this in the broadest sense, 'brothers' denoting our fellow man.

    Good reaction 👍
The song is about war, you're right.
Mark Knofler was born and raised in Great Britain (UK), you probably know all about it.
His childhood was in Scotland, where the country is divided into The Highlands and The Lowlands.
Mark wrote this song while the UK was at war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, which lie offshore from Argentina.
    The islands are British soil.
British soldiers are the soldiers in the west who have been in the most wars because no country in the west has been in as many wars as the UK has.
The USA has never been in any war without having special troops from the UK with them as allies. Since the USA became independent on July 4 in 1776, the USA and the UK have had a tradition of standing side by side when there are wars.
The British are always at the front together with the soldiers from the USA when there is war and the people in the USA forget that all too often.
Great Britain's special forces are often referred to as the world's best special forces, but everyone agrees that they are among the best in the world along with the special forces from the United States.
So people in the USA should remember that as the USA has lost its sons and daughters in wars, mothers and fathers in the UK have also lost their sons and daughters side by side with the American soldiers.
In this war over the Falkland Islands, no other nation intervened in the war.
Uk land on the other side of the world was invaded and they solved the task themselves.
This was personal for the UK and the US along with the rest of Nato and the rest of the world's military powers did not interfere.

Brothers in Arms was written about the Falklands war between Great Britain and Argentina in 1982.
This affected all in our country at that time, as well as our friends in Argentina.
People (mainly soldiers) tragically died, warships sunk and this had a big affect on Mark, which was the inspiration of this song.
Dire Straits and the Police were from the North East of England and were two of the biggest bands in the world back then, playing the largest stadiums.

There is no song better than "Telegraph road".) You turn it on, close your eyes and cry. There is also "Romeo and Juliet". I didn't like it for a long time, and then one day I turned it on - and again there was great sadness from the cheerful music and the manner of "singing" a sad story, then I turned on a live performance - and there was an incredibly sad version of this song with a saxophone.) In short, these Dire Straits are cool guys.)

He has a very distinctive guitar sound, doesn't he? When Weird Al asked to do a Dire Straits parody, Mark said yes so long as he could play guitar on it! Still, I am going to recommend the Home Free acapella cover of this song, for a very different take which is equally affecting. Or, for more by Dire Straits themselves, try _Romeo_ _and_ _Juliet._ Either way, enjoy!

This is the shortened video version, it has two minutes trimmed off the end. The track on the Brothers in Arms LP (also available on UA-cam) is actually two minutes longer and feels more complete to me. Awesome track.

Thank you for the reaction. Yes, this song is Mark’s reaction to the horrors of the British involvement of the Falkland war. I must join the previous comments: if you want to listen to a far more touching, emotional, brilliantly executed live version of this beautiful song, you must listen to Brothers In Arms live On The Night 1992. His guitar is crying…

-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
