Dermot Higgins set of on a huge adventure this July. He wanted to be the first Irish person and oldest to paddle the 3400km (2300 miles) from the start of the Yukon River to the Bering Sea in Alaska. He faced challenge after challenge and even woke up one night to a bear standing on top of him!
Will he make it to the end?

Did 170km out of what was originally supposed to be a 750km trip last year. I voluntarily cut it down to about 300km but then my planned supplies got messed up and i had to just get back asap.
Took me a year to build the boat and practice / train with it.
Trip was awesome otherwise. Physically quite difficult at times (13 portages, 2 rivers with 1 against the current) and i was bleeding from every finger by the end but no real accidents persay.
Lots of complications.... enough to keep it interesting anyways. Have my own odd shaped log story. (working on the videos for my channel.)
I feel like using a flute and shooting the inside of your tent with bearspray is darwin feeling you up for a proper shag.
Aquatic leaves and pine sap or pitch can be used to fix boats, even plastic ones.

Dermot is awesome! That's cool AF. I remember pissing in the Yukon one morning at my camp beside it riding motorcycles up to Alaska with some Navy buddy's back in '90. I love canoe expeditions, though they be hard if any mistakes are made, say in navigation. I'd want to do this, but don't dig grizzlies, and I remember how mosquitoes and fly's can be up there. Besides, I wouldn't take my dog, so no way for me now. Something more tame for us. Enjoyed watching this. I been in bear areas alone and unarmed. I remember the fear. I've been called fearless before, but that ain't the entire truth. Yeah, Im only hanging out in the more mild places from now on. Grizzly free and Mild is the way. With a hand cannon I might go into such an area, but not like Id want to have to kill one, and then there's the damned bugs to deal with still. Yeah, that's a really impressive trip doing the entire river. I want to go do the entire upper Potomac and folding bicycle back up to my van on the C&O canal towpath. Alternatively, I could stash a bicycle on a big Island before setting out from upriver. Wanted to 30 years ago. Getting evicted by slumlord now, so I'm outfitting my van to live in. Got canoes for shade. That trip ain't good to start after the first week of October though. Don't know if Ill be ready. I got nothing else to do though. I dig how he broke out of 15 year depression. I must break out of mine, but I got my dog take care of so Im okay

I felt the same, in fact my friend and I who paddled the river a few years ago were talking about doing the same trip to the Bering Sea one day!

You should make a whole separate video about your experiences on this lake. I'm sure people would love to hear more about those adventures!

It really wasn’t that exciting, we encountered wild winds and got stuck for 2 days then a boat rescued us haha. The paddling race though, that was something that was wild with the nonstop paddling, hallucinations, exhaustion and hands so sore I couldn’t open a can of pop the next day!
