I swear I've seen every channel that does this sort of content, and this has quickly become one of my favorites! Stories that haven't been done a million times, thoughtful writing that tells a compelling story, narration that sounds totally natural, and great use of visuals. Great work, can't wait for the next one!

Thanks Laura! Glad you enjoy it. My goal is to give a different angle and focus more on the people (when possible, there's not always a lot out about them) than the incident itself. There's so many amazing stories out there!

"Bart was worried about his medical bills" as the bear was attacking him. That is so American, and you have my N.Z. sympathy. Our no-fault Accident Compensation system pays for all of that plus 80% of your wages when recuperating.
I love your delivery and content: Factual, unsensational, calm delivery and some rational and thoughtful conclusions.

As an American, I don’t believe you. Healthcare can’t operate that way!! It’s impossible!!! It can’t be done!!!! You want to survive something, you better have some cash! Otherwise, you may live, but you won’t have a home.
So sick of dozens of countries spreading lies that healthcare is a right everyone should have and a country should take care of its citizens. As if it makes sense to help those who’ve been stricken with an illness and who has people depending on them to get better and not go broke in the process.
You’re basically saying how much money you have and how much you are willing to pay shouldn’t determine whether someone lives or dies. Insanity!!
How exactly do you get prescriptions in those countries??! What non medical doctors do you have to question the doctors prescriptions and amounts and require phone calls and prior authorization and hold up the whole process only to decide not to cover all of it!!??
I mean, every doctor should have a non doctor trying to save money there to accept or reject their personal assessment of a patient that they made by actually examining the patient and using their decade of educations. I don’t see how it could work without that!!
Now, as an American who’s uninsured, I’m going to put off seeing a doctor for preventative care or any concerning symptoms until I have the money saved up to go and find out I have something bad I have to pay for. Don’t be jealous. I’m also being deadly serious about that. Deadly. 😜

Even with hypothermia being a possibility, being in cold weather and having ice readily available is the best environment this could have happened in. The cold slows blood loss and helps keep swelling down.

I can see improvements in your videos even in the past few weeks. I think I’d say your confidence is growing in telling the stories and the video and photos are matching up better and better. I’m glad I’m catching this channel before you have 400 videos!
So about bears. Most of my “encounters” have been very, very good. We look at each other, respect each other, and don’t mess around. This is true even with mother bears. I’ve had moms with 3 cubs who stayed calm and chastised her kids for not doing what she told them to do right while I was within a few feet but without messing with me at all. The most challenging I’ve experienced are male teenage bears, they think they can do whatever they want.
When I’m in the woods, I’m watchful for bear and mountain lion mostly but not paranoid about coming across them at all. At home I don’t want bear coming for visits. I mix some water, seed, and cayenne pepper to discourage curiosity. Every other year there’s a new bear in the spring who hasn’t tasted my special delicacy. He or she will find the dish, run their tongue across it a couple of times and then half way through the second tongue lick, leave the half a tongue lick while running off as quick as they can. They can’t lick their “wound” of “fire” and make it feel better and water makes it worse. They run off to wait out the burning sensation AND THEN that same bear never comes up to the house ever again!
I only do this (doesn’t hurt them) to make sure we don’t surprise each other rounding a turn. Shock has a funny way of causing overreaction.

I have encountered brown bears hiking in Alaska (photographed the one in my pic). Have seen sows w/ their cubs/sub-adults, as well as huge males running 30mph with ease. Alaska is a place where animals rule. It’s beautiful but you have to be very aware of your surroundings.

Nice work, Stacie. I remember when this happened. We (You and I) have friends who know this guy. Oh and the other day, our (Cody and my) neighbour sent us a picture of a big grizzly a couple feet from our place. There is also a few black bears hanging around the same area, which is strange. No wonder we haven't seen the moose around lately.

I have black bears all around me in western Massachusetts. They aren't as dangerous as grizzlies but I still carry bear spray when I am bird watching alone in our local nature preserves. I know that with grizzlies you should "play dead" but with black bears you should be prepared to fight. A black bear cornered me in my garage a month or so ago and I didn't have my bear spray with me then. I grabbed a nearby snow shovel and did some yelling. Luckily for me, he backed out of the garage and left. He was only looking for trash/garbage and didn't want a fight.

Great stories. In the 80s in Algonquin a canoe trip I was on with 16 campers we set up camp on a known small island. About dusk the kids discovered a cub and let it follow them. The mother was on one side of island with them, a safe place to give birth we thought and she had swam out there. We all loaded up and paddled on to the next spot.

I think anxiety can be good... Back when I was 17 I was scared when skiing cross country in a forest where bears live. It was winter and I knew bears can wake up if disturbed. Deep snow, and I remember being constantly anxious whether a large bump in the snow might hide a bear den.
Kind of the same whenever I'm crossing rocky terrain, but for snakes.x)
I'm not a hiker, just someone who lives in a city and goes to nature from time to time. And I guess these types of situations are why human beings can have problems with anxiety. What is a problem in a safe, urban situation, can be a life saver in another. Also appreciate someone being well prepared.
(Just trying to find a positive side to anxiety.)

In some countries in Europe where brown bears are present in the mountain areas, we are not encouraged to carry a bear spray, nor can you buy one, they are simply not sold. Would a regular pepper spray be sufficient protection in case of a bear encounter?

    • @silvieb2024

No, the amount of spray is too weak and you have to be too close to the bear. But, I guess it is better than nothing. Bear spray goes a much longer distance.

What is your opinion?, if I may ask...about 5 male skiers and 1 female skier who made a trip in the Swiss mountain, 5 frozen bodies of males are found all together and female body is still not recovered..??? To me it sounds bad, like she was wounded and they abandoned her or she dropped in the hole on the mountain and they abandened her .. how come that they haven't left even in their mobiles nothing regarding this girl, she was youngest among them and only girl.. bastards they are.. to my opinion ..please, if you can, prove me wrong with doubt, thank you

There are any number of reasons her body wasn't with them. I don't know why you would jump to those conclusions

@@silvieb2024 Well, I guess the guy didn't get eaten alive, did he. Maybe we should be content with the existing, more established recreation areas we have instead of keep pushing the wilderness envelope and stressing the already shrinking habitat of these wild creatures just for the sake of checking off another bucket list item.

Don't Go into Bear Country they are wild animals. Let them roam in Peace

That's almost impossible when many of us live in bear country. You'd have to get whole populations of Alaska, the Yukon, many other states/provinces/territories to all leave if we all had to stay out of bear country. It's just not realistic.
