The End Of The Bottle Dump Amazing History Found Just In Time!

  • This week videos sees us a little in shock and very sad! Unfortunately our favourite dump has been destroyed. We watched as all the trees in the orchard were ripped up by a mechanical digger. It is going to be turned in to fields but I suspect it may be built on once they have permission. We shed a few tears but quickly realised we had to save as much as we could.
This film and next weeks is us trying to find as much history as we can before it is lost forever.

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments of support and commiseration. We are still devastated by the loss of all those beautiful trees. The land is being given over to animal feed crops. There is some light as we have been told by the owner that the profits from these fields will be donated to a local charity. There is one last dump film this Sunday but we are working on a very special Dump Doll extravaganza including crafting and a closer look at all the dolls and parts we have found at the dump. That film will hopefully be out next Thursday (I say hopefully because this is possibly the most involved craft we have ever done) Thank you again for your wonderful comments they mean so much xxxxxxxxx

Could you ask if it's still possible to go searching the land between crops when it's ploughed. It sound like they wouldn't mind that.

@@tonywild1963 I do that on land near me and still find perfume bottles and stoppers, blue and white pottery and ink jars so not everything gets completely mashed up. You would have thought that apple cider was still popular and certainly apple cider vinegar is very on trend. Perhaps it's the lack of pickers that has driven this or the age of the trees even though they seemed to be producing still.

So sad. Wish I were there. I could harvest some of those trees and turn them into bonsai trees. You'd be amazed how even big, fat trees can be made into large bonsai. I have two ponderosa pines that are over 130 years old that were saved from a forest fire by harvesting them and creating bonsai from them. They are beautiful and very happy. 💚

Wow- can't wait to watch this. I had a similar experience this week. The local play park was being redone. Revealing an old bottle dump underneath. The builders kindly let me and the kids come in and pick up the bottles we could see. Now, it's all AstroTurfed over.
These were the first bottles me and the kids had found so it was super special. I even found some with embossing from the town we're in & so glad we saved them. No clay pipes yet but I'm hopeful we'll find one someday.

I'm not sure which is worse: the destruction of the dump, or the uprooting/destroying of the trees, which means more habitat loss for songbirds, insects, & small mammals. :'( But that's humans for you. Everything in the name of progress. :/ Loved all your finds, and I'm so glad you went out to look immediately after getting the message about the heavy equipment. I am so grieved for your loss. This was such a delightful place to visit with you on your adventures. This reminds me too much of when my husbands father died, ten odd years ago, and my brother in-law inherited his orchard. Dad had an old fashioned orchard with tall wind-rows full of cottonwood tree's that the birds loved to nest in, and was a haven also for all manner of wildlife. He had a 85 acre's of all kinds of fruit tree varieties. Apple's, pears, peaches, and cherries, all of which we were free to pick and can for our own use. With no warning at all, we went one day to visit, and my brother in-law had hired removers to come and destroy all the old tree's, dig out the wind-rows, and chip them all into wood chips. In their place were planted rows on rows of commercial pears, closely strung on wood poles and wires. It was the most hideous thing I have ever seen, (next to this today.) His orchard is now much more commercially viable, but it has lost its soul completely. No more pleasant strolls at sunset down the wide avenue of tree's to watch the birds. Now it is just jam crammed tree's with not enough space to spread their ever growing roots. My heart was so broken by the sight of Dad's decimated orchard, I was glad he didn't live to see it. I seldom go there anymore, even tho I live nearby, for tho the years have passed, it remains never the same gentle loving old fashioned orchard that I roamed and loved so well.

So sad to think that just like that ... in the space of mere minutes... 40 + yr. Old trees are gone and all the wildlife that used those trees & bushes , flowera & grasses as shelter , cover or homes no longer have that to count on ! MAN truly is ... the MOST DESTRUCTIVE BEING ON THE PLANET ! With all of our supposed wisdom & knowledge ( and all the things we've created ) ... why is it we have no common sense to know how badly the things we do destroy everything from land to water to sky !!??

This happened to my town dump before I even had the chance to dig it, so many rare local bottles were built on.... I cannot believe this has happened - maybe you should advertise it for people online to come and dig the holes so that you and everybody else can save as much as possible? I’m so sorry that this had to happen to you.. I hope either you find a new place, the plans for building fall through or they don’t build on part of the dump? I feel really sad that the lucky dump bird you found on one of your first adventures that showed you all the good finds will now be without a home 😭 😭 it’s so sad that everything else will be built over, when you put the eye that was too big in your doll it looked like it was crying 😭 very well done using the seal!! Maybe you should use it when signing off letters from now on? 😂 😁 poor old dump, may you rest in piece... maybe you should ask the people driving the diggers to save as much as is possible as put them somewhere you can easily find them? 😀 😭 😢

🇨🇦 This makes me so outraged. I am sad for the loss of the dump but the silver lining is that more items are being brought to the surface from disturbing the soil. If this is going to be a field there will be new things revealed every year. What really makes me angry is the wholesale destruction of a well planted established apple orchard. I can tell this because the trees were obviously planted in rows. With a good arborist that orchard would have been producing masses of apples again. The loss of an established echo system for the birds and animals drives me crazy. If it isn't too late, you could protest this aspect to the local media or politician. It might save your dump.

First I want you to know I'm sending you both some comforting hugs. As our Kate stood there looking at that broken tree, with her heart breaking, I too cried. Last week they removed a very healthy, lovely maple tree from next door to me, It was 70 to 100 years old and we have seen many generations of birds nesting in that tree. When I saw it, it stunned me so much, it took my breath away. I cried for days for that tree and a wee bird that sat in a neighboring tree crying. I've never heard a bird wailing before, but I can assure you that is what it was doing. A couple days later the city marked a maple on my property, to be cut or removed, (something to do with city water lines, though I'm thinking it has to do with the five gee whiz poles being erected), all in the name of progress? Please send up prayers with me, that I can trim it down enough that they won't remove it. I am so sad, I'm not gonna lie, though your wonderful rescues, along with your bucket listers were encouraging and lightened my Heart a bit.
Bless Your Beautiful Hearts, Fleur and Kate, From a kindred soul sister.

😒😢 oh no...not the bottle dump!!! I'm so sorry 😔, my heart and stomach literally dropped when I heard your voice over.
All those apple trees (sustaining food for birds, bugs, bees and possibly mammals) and various other shrubs and plants that nurtured and sheltered Mother Nature's wild children.🤦🏼‍♀️(sigh) I'm just heartsick 💔. So few wild and safe places for nature's creatures anymore.
Thank you for giving your best to try and save as much history treasures as you can 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!!! I can hear the deep sadness and shock in both your voices😌🤗(giant virtual cuddle hug).
Can't wait to see the next installment... hope you get to see your "wee" mudlarking birdie one last time 🤞🏻. Love and hugs🙂🤗🤭😘

I always find it very sad when trees are destroyed. And this orchard held so much history! Such a shame!

Oh gosh, I hope an ecological survey was done before they destroyed it!! All the wildlife! 😦😯😟😔 It breaks my heart, that looked like a wildlife haven 😢

My thinking as well. Often land owners will make these changes without reference to anyone else for fear of delaying their planned work. Wild life, conservation, preservation doesn't enter their thinking.

Hi ladies, I feel your sadness, that dump had become a real haven for wildlife and I felt so sick seeing such destruction. At least you managed to rescue some of the dump babies that live there. I think that Kate's 'big marble' is a Jack or 'Cochonnet' (French 'piglet') from a game of bowls or 'boules.' It was a game that became very popular during the 19th century.
    Big hugs,
    Louie Xx

I'm sorry for your loss of this dear 'friend'. It was so close (literally) to you and gave you so many nice things. You were so good to go and save what you could.

Also, I would react just as you both did to all this. I would speak to the dump and thank it and tell the little faces that they're coming home safe. I feel so connected to you lovely folks. Thank you for sharing with us.
