Troy does an incredible video series. You don't find much info on the volvo penta electric fuel pump, but Troy brings it all together with informative and step by step directions. My boat has been in storage for over 2 years with old fuel in the tank and fuel system. After draining the tank I decided to disassembly the fuel pump and clean it. I was amazed at the peeling paint inside the fuel pump?? GREAT info from Troy. Following Troy's directions I cleaned, reassembled, reinstalled, primed the system and my boat cranked beautifully. Thanks Troy, most appreciated.

What product/process did you use to remove the paint from the inside of the fuel cell?
You can use aircraft paint remover.
By the looks of the finish in the video it appears he may have media blasted the entire unit and then repainted it, however I’d likely use aircraft stripper.
Great video. My Volvo Penta stalled on the lake last year and I haven't been able to start it again. It died like the kill switch activated. Any ideas? I'm rebuilding the fuel pump per your video. How did you test the pumps? Thanks again

Fantastic videos. Thank you. They have helped me no end. I have the paint specs on the mesh screens and will flush with carb cleaner, however, I have a question, i am about to clean all of the other components I plan to use, 1)carb cleaner, then (2), a brush and then neat gasoline to rinse. is this the correct method or should i use something else instead before re assembling? I dont want the carb cleaner to stip paint off? Any Advice is appreciated
Thank you for the comment. There are several ways to clean the paint out. scraping with a screwdriver, airplane stripper, sand blaster, dremel tool to name a few. The carb cleaner will not strip the paint off. the carb cleaner will help clean the screens. Please feel free to contact me at mancavemechanic@gmail.com for questions.
Troy, I am in the middle of putting mine back together using your o-ring kit (looks great and ty for the fast shipping). It was a mess and a lot of the paint had come off but thankfully just on the water side. I am going to have the parts media blasted (except for the inner part of the tube where the fuel sits since it looks fine). What kind of paint do your recommend to use on the water side of the parts? I recommend just polishing the water jacket side to peen the aluminum
How much to rebuild?
You have ignored the most problematic component of the Volvo
Pinta fuel pump. That plastic float is made from a solid (permeable)
foam plastic compound and the trapped air pockets inside provides the buoyancy
to lift the needle into the seat. Evidently, the Volvo engineers were unaware
of the numerous and frequent engine fires on cars (especially on Chrysler
vehicles) equipped with Holley carburetors during the late ’60s and into the
early ’80s. The plastic floats would become moderately saturated from absorbed
gasoline and become less buoyant and cause the gasoline to spill out on top of
the running engine. Currently, most Volvo Pinta stern drive boats are close to
20 years old and when the aged floats loose buoyancy it allows liquid gasoline
to flow directly into the intake manifold and cause it to quit running, which is
exactly the predominance of reported symptoms associated with Volvo Pinta fuel
delivery system.
Are all the fuel assemblies the same I’ll need a oRing kit and maybe some parts for a 93 5.7 gxi
Does it matter if both pick up tibes go on same side of divider?

I just ordered one from Amazon complete with new fuel pumps $100.

Can you please tell me where the screens are that get the paint chip stuck on them? Are they on the bottom parts of the fuel pump where the fuel goes in? Do I have to remove the fuel pump from the assembly to clean those screens?.
They are located at the bottom of each electric pump. The HP can be checked while still on the boat. The LP screen can only be visualized after taking the assembly apart
How did you clean the inside of the filter housing. It looks great, but I am stumped as to how you did that. Dremmel tool?

Wow. What a great video! Can you please tell me It’s the fuel pump cooled by Rob water or closed cooling water? I noticed one water line comes from the motor and one goes to the Portside riser.
Also I recently overheated my motor for a few minutes my high alarm came on I shut my motor down quickly as to not do any damage but I noticed once I figured out my overheating problem which was a stupid mistake on my part quick fix. I noticed that my fuel pump was making a noise. It never happened before and I assume it’s because there wasn’t cool water going to the pump?thoughts? So again I ask is my fuel pump cooled by raw water and then leaves out the port side exhaust or? Recirculated back through with antifreeze?
Thanks for posting, wish I had seen this before ordering a replacement from Amazon. I will however be sending my old one to you for a rebuild. My boat overheated and now no longer works correctly. But a chicken or the egg question did my boat overheat because of fuel flow restriction (my fuel filters were clogged) or did overheating destroy my fuel pump? :)

Hi there...nice video and appreciate you posting this! I have the classic symptoms - I start the motor, runs great for about 5 minutes, then the hi pressure pump starts to whine, gradually gets louder and louder. Gotta be the paint chips accumulating at the filter. Now I'm gonna tackle it. Just wondering where you got your O-rings from? Thanks again.

Pretty good job on the videos,,, got to say I am not a fan of the music being a much louder volume than you voice. Also noted that you skipped over how you cleaned the paint from the inside of the housings,, got to guess you may have glass beaded them or something by the look of the metal.
I apologize for that. We made that video last year and are unable to change the music since that cut was on a previous computer that died. I hope that the information contained in the video was helpful. As far as the method of cleaning, I use many methods to remove the paint and some assemblies need more advanced cleaning techniques then others.
Thanks,, I watched it again today, noted that you did not explain that you were lubricating the O-rings when you installed them,, pretty important if you are teaching someone who does not know? Did you post video on cleaning out the high and low pressure pumps?

Less than that actually, but helped a friend buy one of the imported copies and it only lasted 3 months, today I am taking apart the OEM pump to see if I can clean it up.
Yes, there are several sellers these days but they all have paint on the inside. ManCaveMechanic.com sells them without paint on the inside
Save your money buy original or refurbished by professional like ManCaveMechanic, I bought one from amazon and only lasted 3 months, low pressure pump overheated, insides melted and seized.
Get rid of that Music !!!!!! , very annoying
