This is the best of UA-cam. Troy has a series of videos on one specific problem and explains it thoroughly. I bought the o-rings from him and performed the well-described repair and the boat is running great again. Lifesaver.

Budy just installed this exact fuel pump assembly. The new one is pouring fuel out of every spot it can. Instead of pumping water through it and into the manifold. Its dumping the fuel straight into and out of the manifolds. Went throufh half a tank in 15 minutes

I have a Volvo Chaparral with a 5.7 GSI V8(350). The boat is a 2001 but has been maintained meticulously. I replaced the original fuel pump on 8/5/10 at 317 hours. Boat has always gone to max revolutions with no hesitation. It still does except when I try to go flat out at 56mph. It will crank right up to about 50 mph but when I give it the final push, it flattens out with symptoms of fuel starvation. Fuel filter is clean and it was recently fully tuned with plugs, rotor etc, Currently has 550 hours. The problem started out of the blue about three years ago and there are no other symptoms of fuel or electrical problems. If you didn't try to take it to full speed, you would never know that anything was wrong. I have taken it to two Volvo service centers and neither can figure out what the problem may be. I was impressed with your video. I don't know if my replacement Fuel pump has the painted interior. However, I saw a Volvo service bulletin that indicated that the paint flakes from the fuel pump can clog the fuel pressure regulator filter and they recommend removing the regulator filter. A Volvo dealer told me that if the Regulator were clogged, I would have a much more significant loss of fuel/power. Do you have any ideas?ThanksMike Cameron
I agree and was going to suggest cleaning your FPR when I read the last sentence. The Volvo solution is to remove the screen and replace with the e-clip. Just know that if you do that and have not removed the paint out of your fuel pump then you are risking the paint debris going through your regulator to your injectors.

I've never had a problem with this engine so I never really looked at it closely. I got in there today to clean the fuel pressure regulator filter and discovered that this 2001 5.7 GSI is carbureted--- no fuel rail. Fuel is delivered direct from the fuel pump to the carb. Do you know of any small carb filters that could be partially clogged with black paint? I'm stumped!ThanksMike
New pumps cost 149.00 on amazon, I know it is an older video, were they more expensive back then?
Great videos. Really appreciate the level of detail and functional descriptions provided. In the process of diy removal of paint and your gasket kit is in route and is expected to arrive today. Quick question, what is the purpose of the divider plate that rests vertically in the center of the lower assemble that is accessible when the lower assembly is removed? I noticed the two lower guide ears appear to be bent up and when I tried to straighten one, the tab broke off. Does this render the piece unusable even though it still rests securely in the lower assembly grooves? It does not look like it is a tight seal when installed and can’t figure out it’s function. Thanks in advance for any clarification.

How badly does 5 years in salt water damage the inside of the water cooling chamber? I am replacing the entire pump assembly for a friend with new.

Have a bad vibration in motor at idle on a 4.3 gl-d carburetor replaced everything 2 times plus the heads have done everything spent 3500 so far carb rebuild adjustment rebuilt again then bought a brand new carburetor re ajustment plug wires, coil, cap ,rotor , control Module , check timing had new heads put on still like bad miss at idle only runs good at high rpm only thing i have not done is fuel pump. Could that be it

Hello, great video! I think I would like to hire your services to rebuild my PV fuel pump. The problem is, I’m not sure it broken. My PV 5.7 Gi-D won’t start. The fuel pump pressurizes when I turn the ignition. I put a fuel pressure gage on the schrader fitting on both the low pressure fitting and on the railing side. The railing reads 50 PSI but the low pressure cell read nothing. Not sure you can fix that by just cleaning that pump up from paint debree. Would a zero reading on the LP cell cause a no start due to lack of fuel? Any thoughts would be appreciated

How much do you charge for the reman service? I just replaced mine with a new Genuine Volvo Pump assembly. The parts store told me it is the 6th generation of this pump. I am expecting the new one to fail in the future. I want to have my original serviced so it is ready to go on the shelf when the inevitable happens again. $1122.00 for the new pump assembly if anyone is wondering how much a new one costs.

Have you ever replaced fuel pick up hose? Mine is cracked? Do you know what size o ring is the top water seal on the inside cylinder?

We have port and starboard engines. The port side pump was replaced in 2014. These are 8.1 GXiI-F series. Is it possible Volvo was still selling the versions you mentioned and it was replaced with the same problem pump? Because we are having same issues, like bad gas, also engine performance when you got o give it throttle cutting out and excessive fuel smell, smoke. Is there are way to tell if the low/high pressure pumps are damaged from the paint flakes and need to be replaced? I just started having the issue, the boat ran for about 2 hours with the fuel pump making a loud whine. How should I clean out the pumps to make sure they are clean. You mentioned in the video you would test them later but didn't say how. I'm just wondering if I should take the time to clean out all the paint from the pump or if my assembly is done.

Troy, I have a 2009 Regal with twin 320 volvo penta's approx 260 hours....i just had a fuel pump go out. The mechanic said it was the high pressure pump that was bad, but replaced the entire assembly. I have the old one, and was thinking of having this one remanufactured, since if it is the paint issue, the other engine cant be to far behind. I boat in Lake Michigan, Grand Haven area. What is the cost of having this done?

Damned if I can get the f*ing thing apart. The high pressure pump was bad enough but I can't budge the inner fuel cell tube from the float valve end. Do I need to use a filter wrench?
Also sea water has got into the end o ring seats on the fuel cell with slight corrosion in the groove. Can I use some aviation gasket sealant on the new O rings?

If this is such a known issue that why the hell do they keep painting the pumps??
They tell you in the manual to only use ultimate unleaded 95+ or you will damage the engine. Idiots don't read and they use lower octane ethanol added fuel. It's the ethanol that strips the paint. I'm having to deal with a previous owner's stupidity right now.
