Great review as always guys, but just one thing which deserves way more attention... It’s the only full frame camera at that price point with high-res mode. I can’t stress how much of a game changer for anyone who shoots stationary objects, products, interiors etc it is, and eliminates the need to buy a more expensive higher res camera. That feature alone makes this SUCH good value. I’ve got an S1R and the high res mode is just incredible. Way better than Sony. I actually switched from Sony to L-Mount because Sigma were making the only interesting reasonably priced glass on E-mount... And the S1R is the best built mirrorless camera by far. I don’t shoot people or wildfire so don’t care about the AF. Anyway, stop shooting landscapes with trees and water to test the high-res feature! That’s not what it’s for and you’re not doing it justice!
Panasonic makes great cameras, they push the big boys in specs and features. They support their cameras forever introducing new features well into a cameras life cycle, which makes me appreciate the way they do business. I would happily buy more of their cameras if they would FIX THE FREAKING AUTOFOCUS!!
I will never understand why Panasonic deliberately refuses to incorporate phase detection in their newer cameras. By doing that they are hurting no-one else but themselves. They are making cameras that have so many wonderful features but that really are worthless without a solid and totally reliable continuous AF system. PS: Of course I am only referring to shooting videos and not to photography.

@@FuzeDzn Gh5 must be better than the G9 mate. The autofocus on the G9 is disgusting. Even after software updates it still loses my face all the time and focusses on the background.

The IBIS on its own is 5 stops, however with the Dual I.S it is 6.5 stops... Considering all of the current Panasonic L mount lenses feature IS other than the new 20-60mm
As always you guys are the gold standard for competent, balanced reviews of hybrid cameras. I look forward to the firmware upgrade of my S1. Hopefully they will in include the full thing, i.e. RAW output and anamorphic support. Ah, one question: what about timecode?
Your sure right Chris, this is what Panasonic needed right now! The only things I wish were better is the EVF res., full size HDMI, split cover... for the era & mic jacks, on (as usual) better AF. However for the price, these things are minor compare to what this so much smaller & portable can do.
Comparisons S1H and S5 video focus (from 6:50 minute) is made with different aperture (F/4.0 for 1H and F/5.6 for C5). S5 at this point have much bigger depth field, which makes autofocus system less sensitive as a result, background magnification changes will be less visible. In few words with bigger depth field autofocus system less changing focus or not changing at all. Second thing, which can also have the influence on results, is the distance to the main object. You can see that test with C5 was made bigger distance on which depth field will be also bigger. So both factors, which can have, influence on background magnification changes looks like helps S5 looks better.
Looks like a fine camera, a full frame G9 if you will. It'll be especially tempting when the price drops in a few months, as they always do from launch price, and also coming soon is the nice trio of much needed compact f1.8 primes, the 24, 50 and 85, which will make for a nice lens line up for the S cameras.
Interesting. I'm close to buying a Z6 because of the 24-200. It appears to be a good all-in-one video lens alternative. The Panasonic 20-60 is tempting, too. Any comments, Jordan?

I am loving this Lumix S5 but I am thinking that in the latter part of 2021 something more amazing might come out for still photography. What is your thought ? Also do Nikon Lenes work on the Panasonic cameras?
In my own opinion the Panasonic S5 is like the full frame Panasonic GH4, Panasonic G85, Panasonic GX8, Panasonic G7, and Canon 80D and Canon 90D and Canon C100 Mark 2 rolled into one as it can do unlimited recording in 8 bit 4K and HD 1080p. In both Full Frame and Super 35. With less better Auto focus
Good video and good testing, with many good questions answered. One remark though... Are you becoming more "serious" in your attitudes recently?? I'm missing the introduction joke and your usual swearing guys 😁 Make sure you carry on with your funly-serious tests. That's how we love you guys! 😉
Great review as always..just wondering as I’m a Panasonic GH4 owner looking to go full frame does this camera shoot log and timelapse internal like the GH4?
Hi guys Love your videos thank you so much for this info. For photography I am debating on Panasonic S5 or save more to get the Canon R5. Your thoughts ?
Getting the S5 (not version II) today? ...or not? Hows the AF handling when following real birds and birds (airplanes) ? Will the AF be an issue as well as with video? Not sure if I need the S5 II a a still photographer..
I have a GH5 and I mount some EF glass to it. I am looking for a camera to pair with it that is Full Frame, has IBIS, takes better stills, and has better auto focus. This S5 and the Canon R6 do all of what I listed above and I would be able to mount my EF Glass to either using mounts. But which Camera should I choose? I prefer image quality from photos and videos above Auto Focus performance.
when you guys do the "walking-towards-camera" AF test, you should also do a test in lower lighting environments, y'know? Like in church lighting? (for the wedding shooters 😉)
I've always enjoyed your coverage and held you guys up as mentors when I first started my channel, especially Jordan. I really wanted to get the S1 when it was announced, but Panasonic's stubborn view that DFD works is getting tiring. I'm a one man show. I want a trust worthy AF so I can focus on the subject and not if they're in focus. Do you guys have any insight why they refuse to move to phase detect?
Thoughts on this and the a7SIII? I've been using Panasonic since GH4 and I now have two GH5's, GH5S and S1H and I clearly like their image quality, but the AF always lacked. Now that Sony is catching up, and superseding in specs are you guys sticking with Panasonic for your videos or will you start using the Sony? Thinking about switching, I tried with the a7RIII but didn't love the video of it, but things look to have improved now. And having the same lenses to use for larger cinema systems like the upcoming FX6 that sounds very very tempting.
With the actual firmware update in my S1H and my S1 we have the same AF update like the S5. And the S5 is not a S1H, not in any case! I still use my S1H and my S1 since they reached the market.
I'm really curious. Why do you guys ALWAYS mention the XLR1 adapter for Panasonic, but not the similar adapter for Sony cameras? Granted, they are more expensive...
Just when we were about to get a Sigma FP for an economical Fullframe Prores Raw to our Ninja V, it looks like we may just pivot to this S5 instead... get 60p and IBIS added to the deal for the $200 difference.
I wouldn't swap my GH5 for something that didn't have usable AF, also the EVF would be an annoying step-down. Be interesting to see how it sells, as $2k isn't that entry-level... 20-60 for a FF kit lens is an awesome range for a hybrid camera though...
Nice camera. Lens library is terrible though. Stuck with either bazooka Sigma glass or 2nd mortgage Leica glass. Its sort of ironic that Panasonic, one of the great m43's camera makers that knows how to make small, light and high performing products took this long to make the S5 (which should have been their FIRST FF camera), and also do not have any good f1.8 lightweight primes or f2.8 zooms that are smaller either. If I was shopping to get into FF, the best choice is still an A7iii followed closely by the Nikon Z6 simply due to their lens library.
@@pfortunato78 not talking about depth of field. Dont care for it. Just general iq without pixel peeping, like how anyone would normally see it. It just has that wow factor. Cant say why.

Great review. Do you think S5 is better than XT3 ?? Greetings from Havana.
I want this Panasonic S5 alongside the Panasonic Gh5s
Would you recommend S5 for UA-cam one man army setup for product reviews/vlogs?
Good video and good testing, with many good questions answered.
One remark though... Are you becoming more "serious" in your attitudes recently?? I'm missing the introduction joke and your usual swearing guys 😁
Make sure you carry on with your funly-serious tests. That's how we love you guys! 😉
Just what I wanted to see!!! 🙌 thank you!
This camera was like on sale in Europe very shortly for like 1400 euros, my God what a price that was. Goddamn me for missing it.
Great review as always..just wondering as I’m a Panasonic GH4 owner looking to go full frame does this camera shoot log and timelapse internal like the GH4?
Yes and yes. It’s the full V-Log as well!
Hi guys Love your videos thank you so much for this info. For photography I am debating on Panasonic S5 or save more to get the Canon R5. Your thoughts ?
Great reviews thank you. That's the camera I'd be investing in soon.
8:55 Cris is just natural-born videographer.
about the EVF; even lumix G9 has 4mil dot evf.
Getting the S5 (not version II) today? ...or not? Hows the AF handling when following real birds and birds (airplanes) ? Will the AF be an issue as well as with video? Not sure if I need the S5 II a a still photographer..
Currently the S1 is only £100 more expensive than the S5. If the older model gets the CAF update (and Raw?), it seems like the better buy.
Are there any programs around that will convert Panasonic's 4K and 6K Photo files to video files?
when you guys do the "walking-towards-camera" AF test, you should also do a test in lower lighting environments, y'know? Like in church lighting? (for the wedding shooters 😉)
The good ppl at Krolop have found out that photo AF is impacted when using a monitor via HDMI. Maybe sth to keep in mind for the tests...
You see pixelation in the EVF with 2,000,000+ dots??? WTF? Is your eye site like Condor's?
Thoughts on this and the a7SIII? I've been using Panasonic since GH4 and I now have two GH5's, GH5S and S1H and I clearly like their image quality, but the AF always lacked. Now that Sony is catching up, and superseding in specs are you guys sticking with Panasonic for your videos or will you start using the Sony?
Thinking about switching, I tried with the a7RIII but didn't love the video of it, but things look to have improved now. And having the same lenses to use for larger cinema systems like the upcoming FX6 that sounds very very tempting.
I have a question: Does it work with the Tokina 11-20mm F2.8 Lens? I use it with the GH5 with the Viltrox EF-M2 Speedbooster adapter. Many Thanks
You guys do really great reviews . 👊🏾👊🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
The big plus as a Nikon hybrid shooter for me for the S5 is video backup.
I was hoping you'd do an IBIS test, like for the R5/R6, so we could compare them.
Could you do a comparison of this and the A7SIII?
I looked but i couldn't find a review of the Hassleblad 907x. Have you guys done one yet?
Images/footage is looking amazing. Never thought this with their mft cameras.
Is this due to colours or there is actual diffference?
There is no real difference in broad daylight. Put the Noct on a GH5 and have Jordan shoot Chris and it really won't look any different than this.
@@pfortunato78 not talking about depth of field. Dont care for it. Just general iq without pixel peeping, like how anyone would normally see it.
It just has that wow factor. Cant say why.
