Star Citizen is an Open Development Alpha Project by Cloud Imperium. It is 2 Games really though, the Persistent Universe that aims to build a First Person MMO Space Sim that encompasses gameplay in ship & on ground, economy and pretty much anything else you can think of. It's built in the StarEngine (a modified Lumberyard Engine). You'll see massive Space Ships that you can fly with friends, land on planets, explore or whatever your way to whatever goal you choose. It's available to try in it's current Alpha State now, you can give feedback & influence the direction of the game BUT it is VERY ALPHA.
Squadron 42 is the Single Player Campaign of Star Citizen & the Spiritual Successor of Wing Commander. The Idea is the game is immersive, cinematic, beautiful & seamless... NO LOADING SCREENS once in game.
Both Games are currently in the Alpha of their development.
I am suspecting to see something more mainstream for Star Citizen's PU by the end of 2024 with permanent progression, though it will be a while after that before the game is considered "feature complete" which would be closer to 2025 in my opinion.
The are no dates for Squadron 42's Release Yet BUT it is now Feature Complete.
I am an Independent Content Creator & Star Citizen Fan. I am not paid by Cloud Imperium HOWEVER I am an Evocati Member and as such I am under an NDA for Closed Early Patch Tests of Star Citizen', known as the Evocati Test Flight (ETF). The flow of flight model ‘polishing’ from SC to SQ42 speaks volumes as to just how much work remains to be done.
SD42 is probably 2 more years away if we are lucky and 5 if we are not.

@@masonmax1000 interesting take. Do you have any inside knowledge or is this based on doom and gloom. Because if they are feature complete for S42 its not 5 years away because they would imply they would scrap the entire game and restart. This is just a thing called...polishing. CIG is just a unique company actually explaining as they go to the public. Im sure if every company did this as they developed fans would probably say everything is doomed as well.

@@korbentherhinonoone knows what they mean by feature complete. My personal guess is that they're feature complete of 1/3rd of the game, that they've now split in 3 because they want something out the door, so another 5-10 years until the whole game is out.
Glad I bought one $80 game package 10 years ago that included S42. And that is all I have spent on Star Citizen ever.
Even though I spent much more, it's great hearing from players like you that get it. There is no need to spend a penny more than a game package. I literally use one ship 90% of the time

@@JaggedJack1 Which is why I'm betting they are doing everything possible to make SQ42 a smashing success. I think solo campaign mode is CIG future and not the PU.

They’re hoping players buy Sqn 42 -> star citizen -> chapter 2 -chapter 3
To maximise profits.
If they made Sqn 42 it would nullify the point in SC because most people don’t have more than 4 friends they regularly play with.

@@JetSe77er open world with a linear storyline. Same as most modern games. But within a smaller space than Star Citizen from what I understand.
Stochastic Catmull-Rom filtering will be something to do with smoothing the clouds shapes. Stochastic is a random pattern generation. Catmull-Rom is a type of line (spline) that is guaranteed to pass through all the control points as opposed to other splines. Guessing this is to make clouds less flickery
What I found most interesting about this monthly report is that Chapter 1 was only mentioned a couple of times while the last few it was mentioned constantly and how they want to get it to "final quality". Can it be that Chapter 1 is almost complete and will now serve as the blueprint for how to close out the other chapters?
I still think or maybe simply hope that at CitCon they are doing something with Chapter 1. A presentation of parts or the entire chapter 1 or maybe even Chapter 1 as a Demo. I can dream, right?
The next "episode" is a separate standalone game and not just DLC?! Once SQ42 went feature complete and the dev team switched back to PU the development, features and patches SKYROCKETED. This year has had the biggest leap in the PU in a while, and we are close to 4.0 and they are talking about BETA 1.0. If they switch dev to another full standalone game will SC dev be back to a glacial pace?

You realise most of the stuff coming to PU is stuff generated for SQ42? It literally will fund further development of SC.

Listening to all of this, unless they can polish everything up, it sounds like we are still a handful of years out
After so many years without WC, this game is going to bring back some fond memories. My wife will wonder why I'm crying at a spaceship game.
Really hope that the NPC pathing and behavior is fantastic so that when AI crew gets added to SC they actually move around your ships so that it doesn't feel like they're just robots existing on your ship solely to run your guns.
It would be awesome if IG would give people one last chance to purchase the game before it releases for a small discount. Would help to add more funds for SC PU.
So excited for the very first game made and finished by this studio. It just really will speak worlds to the validity of the studio for any doubters and start to create more momentum for what could turn to be the best space sim we've ever had. Cheers

I got my squadron 42 pledge back in 2016, that was almost 10 years ago. Thats pretty crazy
No whats crazy is how AAA it looks based on a old engine that they themselves updated like crazy, with a budget smaller than most AAA developers (GTA 6 is 2 billion budget) built by a BRAND new company that never made ANYTHING together before. With potentially the most advanced and detailed social and combat AI that ever existed.

im gonna guess, based on nothing, that at Citizen con they will announce, rather than a specific DAY, "SQ42 Ep1 will release within the next Year", that way they have a buffer
Can't wait for SQ42 to come out so they can use all the assets to improve the PU.
I'm guessing that CIG want to ensure that SQ42 is in the best paddocks state for launch. They can't afford to mess up it's release!
I just hope they release a solid, competent game that gives people a unique, amazing experience. Release date doesn’t matter as much as them landing this thing and it resonating with the industry.
It'll be great if we get a SQ42 release date announced this year. It's almost unreal.

I don't think we'll see advertisements or S42 in the store again until they're confident in a release date. Since S42 and SC are two different games set in the same universe, I doubt that S42 will come with a ship for SC. But I'm guessing we'll see the return of packs that include S42, SC, and a ship.

Their likely goal is to get people to buy into SC prior to selling SQ42 since it no longer comes with SC access and hasn't for a while.

At least in this case, polish is quite a lot of work to do... but hopefully we can get this ready for this or next year's x-mas sales!

In my mind Sq42 is what is gonna explode the popularity of SC, so I'm somewhat disappointed to hear they're gonna break it into multiple games.

glad I kept my Squadron 42 pledge. I had no idea they stopped selling it until last week
It is quite possible that the first parts of planning and development for episode 2 has already started after all you need a smaller team for that. And it should go a lot "quicker" since they dont need to develop a new platform for it and can use many of the already existing models/items without it feeling cheap.
It is also "quite" possible SQ42 is still a decade away. This is the same company that has delayed episode 1 since 2016 by saying 2 years away because of polishing.
"Quicker" = So they might make an episode 2 in 4 years instead of the 14 years it has taken so far alongside an MMO that is still sitting a pre-alpha state.
So many assumptions being made fueled by hope rather than looking at the actual history of CIG's development of this project. They still dont even have a finished flight model after a decade but sure... SQ42 is going to be finished "soon" and episode 2 will be "faster" and CIG has 99 systems ready to go on the hard drive as soon as they get the next magic jesus tech to work.
They will never be 2 and 3 part lol. Simply becuase most of these AAA actors already retired lol hahahah. That's where Roberts screwed up....
Big regret not just spending the extra few quid and getting both games - 42 will be my go to until the verse gets its 1.0 edition.

Given how long its already been since sq42 was declared feature complete and there are still important core functions like the master modes on the to do list, i would rather expect the release date announcement at fleet week next year or even after that.
What i am very certain about though is that new players buying a finished sq42 will not get Star Citizen access/ a game package. Last i checked, it was still just the solo campaign to the PU and even the other way around CIG would start selling two separate games or at least a game plus expansion for the price of one.

I think that S42 will be increased to $50 and that might include some flair for the PU if ordered the few months after it is back on sale.
I’m hoping we finally get a release timeframe at citizencon, however I’m also not going to get too much hope until after an announcement is made.
They really did remove SQ 42 from the starter packages! I hadn't noticed. I'm glad I got it early.
They removed it because any more funds added to sq42 pledge will be a potential investment to crytek.
I got SQ42 in my Explorer pack just before it was removed from the smaller packs. But, I still think it is in the larger ones even today.

I joined SC too late to get SQ42 included in my SC package , but i will definitely be buying it. Hopefully there will be a lot of depth to the storyline that also dives deep into the lore. I love a story driven game :)
For EU selling rules SQ42 will be back in store only after CIG have a date of release to share because otherwise will be against few EU rules on preselling / preorder virtual items. The price will be something around $50~60 for SQ42 standalone imo. My dream is for a Xmas 2024 release, but realistically I hope for a next year date..

I hope that some of the flavour crew like cleaners, cooks and deck crew can be hired for a nominal fee in the persistance universe. I would love to have some of these NPCs doing their thing on my Idris (I mean they will already have been programmed for an idris).

I'm moving back to my home country in October and will be building a monster PC to celebrate. Here's hoping we get a release date that's very close!
I feel like it could go either way but if they announce something vague like "late 2025" i think they know the community will be pretty upset. I'm hoping they're waiting until everything is locked then giving an exact date that's within a few months. Hopefully it's not just wishful thinking on my part.

The most recent trailer looked great. A single player version of star citizen that is not that reliant on servers sounds interesting to me.
It seems to me if the flight model is still not final then SQ42 has a bit of a wait. I can't imagine they want flight to feel very different between the two.
But it would also seem that balancing and orchestrating fights(balance) and NPC flight behaviors couldn't be finished or fully tested before MM is considered basically complete.
This week's progress report email does not paint the picture of a game that is nearly complete, with some of the systems they claim to still be working on..

Seriously, though, it is very funny to me that while the UA-cam yes-men and CIG say the game is imminently completed and in the post-production phases, the email this week indicates that they're still working on implementing logic that governs the AI in space combat, and still working out how mission objective triggers are supposed to work and the UI for presenting them to the player still appears to be in-progress!
We were told the game was "feature complete" a year ago. They are still developing 'core' functionalities. What gives? At least we got bartender and janitor AI finally completed.. nope, that's still not done after all these years either, and we still have no idea how this is meant to contribute to the gameplay experience, but God damn it, we're still getting progress updates about it..
Nearly every thing he said falls under the category of "polishing," which is the phase they're in. Making it render better? Polishing. Re-doing some mo-cap for better performance? Polishing. Etc, etc. Tell me which things you don't think qualify.

Do game packages purchased now come with Squadron? Or is that what is meant by "removed from the store". I backed in 2014 so, obviously, it came with the package. On that same topic, do ship giveaways that are provided by CIG come with Squadron at this point in time?
