    The Polaris is popular because it's ~35% cheaper than the Idris (inflation adjusted) and requires roughly half the crew. It's also not hull-limited; anyone can buy it without hassle. $1,000+ is a hard pill to swallow, and locks the ship to your account; ~$700 makes it more manageable. In CIG's rock-paper-scissors approach to combat, the Polaris is flexible enough to pose a threat to pretty much anything (small ships, large ships, capitals). All of this makes it far more _attainable_ and _usable_ compared to the Idris and Javelin. It's not the strongest or the most well-armed, but it is the most practical combat capital ship.

    The thing that makes the Polaris special to me is it's great position as a flagship for small orgs / groups of buds, It checks all the boxes.
    It's got decent cargo space, a med bay, it can land, it can take ground vehicles, It can hold several small fighters and has rearm/ refuel capabilities
    Aside from that the Ship isn't squishy and has the ability to really pack a punch

      The Polaris Brochure mentions it has Light Armor. Regardless of how strong its shield is, which will probably be 2 or 3 Capital Class Shields, after the shields are down it will be vulnerable to conventional weapons. More so than an Idris (Heavy Armor) at least. However i do expect it to be really fast in a straight line.
      Regardless of when it comes out, it will be exciting to earn one in-game and fly it, with aUAC in the future.

      @@mortalkombatfight-clubsofi9637 After Master Modes is in place, it will have 130-135 m/s SCM speed. Can't say that's really fast for sure. Why 130-135 m/s? Because Hammerhead has 160 m/s at the moment which is considered to be faster and more maneverabale than Polaris when it was in concept. You can check Hammerhead's Q&A for the confirmation.

    • @bryanperras7628

      It's a corvette class and a missile boat primarily. It can hold A SINGLE FIGHTER not several. The Idris can only hold 3, which is the most for player-owned vehicles with internal ship storage, the pocket carriers can hold as much or more in the case of the Kraken, but that's external storage. It's only real use is as an anti-capital-ship escort for convoys. If your Org isn't big enough to warrant an Idris or Kraken as a flagship, then it probably won't be large enough to crew the Polaris to the point where it's useful. The Polaris can be a great addition to any large fleet, but it should not be the highlight and if you're running it solo (as in the only ship, not trying to run it with a single crew member), you're way better off with a Carrack or Expanse as a large group daily runner.

      But they want a ship like the Polaris to NEED 6-12 players manning it. Currently the player cap of 100 would mean that a whopping 10% of the entire server would be on it.
      They dont want to make the same ship twice and are waiting for other features to come online because the Polaris is designed with future features in mind.

      @@Cloverfield187 Thats not the point i was getting at, they say that server meshing will be needed for a ship this big because it so big and bring up the Reclaimer and how the server where when it launched. But in the current game we have the 890 jump and its bigger then the Polaris and ive seen almost 40 at a large org ship meet plus a wide array of other ships and the server be fine. Server meshing will not keep the Polaris from coming out. Also the hammerhead is in game now and just for the turrets and a pilot needs 7 right now so thats not much of a difference compared to 6 minimum for the Polaris.

    Why is the Polaris so popular? Because like the Carrack, it's what people see as their Starship Enterprise. Even more so, because it has real offensive punch as well as exploration, instead of just the exploration of the carrack. I think for many, it represents what the Carrack promised, but honestly, I am not sure it (or any ship that's been in concept for over 5 years) can really deliver on what people have built up in their head over that time.

      @@mythicallegendary3992 I am sure that many people would consider the Idris, or the Javelin to ne the "Enterprise", but those are 3-4 times the price depending on when you might have backed for the Polaris, and are much harder to get. I think the Polaris and the Carrack both first a lot of people's concept of the 1701. Feels big, has a "shuttle" can defend itself (or in the case of the Polaris, has a huge offensive punch too), Perfect for a crew of 5-12 people (captain, first officer, doctor, random bridge officer, comms officer, and a few red-shirts....I mean security....to round out the landing party.

    As a prior Coast Guardsmen that served on a 210ft vessel I'd love to give real life comparisons to multi-crew and the importance of being able to preform multiple roles on board. For a 210ft ship (64 meters) we had an average of 78 people aboard. I believe star citizen massively under estimates the amount of people needed to crew vessels of these sizes and these roles.

      Very excellent point sir.
      Battleship Texas at launch - Length 175m, Beam 29m, Draft (height) 29m+super structure (at least the same) so total 60-70m "tall". 27,000 long tons, Crew 1000+
      RSI Polaris (using website specs, so smaller than what is being worked on) - Length 155m, Beam 82m, Height 35m, 16,884 Long tons, Crew 6-14...lol
      So the RSI Polaris by comparison is roughly the size of a WW1 Dreadnaught. (The USS Texas was considered large for the ship class when it launched in 1912.)

    Personally I think the reason why it is popular is the combination of 3 things: the most manageable combat capital (theoretically), could potentially kill ships much bigger than it, and has a pretty complete set of tools that could be used for any game loop

    I'm a big fan of the Polaris. From day 1, I kickstarted the Constellation because I wanted the multicrew experience. I eventually moved up to the Polaris because I want to experience standing on the bridge of my ship looking out into space over a battlefield or something.
    I am actually not happy about the hype over this ship. I think it will only cause harm. Firstly, far too many people are going to be upset when they realize that this ship is going to cost a lot to run. It is not a daily a driver, it SHOULDN'T be a daily driver. Like Execute said, two torpedoes should cost the same as 2 Avengers. I think that too many people are overselling how good the Polaris is expected to be, and this might result in CIG nerfing it, or the community being extremely unhappy because they expected it to be something and it isn't.
    I am fully expected it to be a capable multi-function ship, but it will be fulfilling the role of being a long distance strike ship. All the cargo should be used for ammo/repair/fuel materials. Stations onboard are for rescue of itself, or maybe flying into a battlefield, launching torpedoes, grabbing some stranded people, and dipping out. However, it is not a brawler, it's not an explorer, it's not a cargo ship, etc.
    I will be honest, i'm also less excited for the Polaris because I expect it to require crew to run, particularly with the engineering gameplay that I expect will be featured in the ship on release, it's going to be a bit rough to run without people to help use all the stations.

    Server stability is not tied to the size of the ships spawned, you can find images of 50+ 890Js all spawned (jump club)

    • @deerpoob
      @deerpoob Місяць тому +1

      I think when they say that they are talking more about the amount of players in said ships, not the ships actual size.
      50 jumps could be 50 people nowadays, but realisticly that could be 500+ players in a "realistic" scenario at game launch.

    • @redslate
      @redslate Місяць тому

      Stability is _significantly_ impacted by the number of players. Larger ships will _implicitly_ require lots of players present.
      Sure, you can currently load in the assets for '50 Capital ships,' but you can't sustain their full crew/passengers. The servers struggle with 90+/100 players; that's like a single Javelin (80).

    We had the Carrack pictures for YEARS! It's the wallpaper to my phones and they changed rear thrusters from vertical slits with golden yellow exhaust to circular thrusters with blue flame exhaust, but worst was cutting the nose and making the snout more rounded like a seal vs the longer, slimmer, very distinct upper floor that looked more like an eagle or falcon beak. They ruined the front profile.

    I've already warned everyone in GII that when the Polaris comes out, good luck getting me out of it. I will be using it for every inappropriate thing it wasn't meant for. Need cargo moved, why not Polaris? Need a med rescue, why not Polaris? Bunkers in a Polaris because turrets cant get through the shields before you finish the mission. To me its a multi-role capital that for a small group could be your home base for an extended time away from a station and seems to have just enough capabilities in a bunch of areas to support small-medium operations.

    What has me intrigued are two things:
    1. Does the torpedo size 10 mean anything beyond damage? Since there's a designated "gunner" for those torpedoes, will we see a new mechanic like manually guided torpedoes? That would be amazing; giving control of the torpedoes to the torpedo operator would drastically change things.
    2. The capital-size radar. What does that imply? Does it mean detecting targets first? Having a longer range? More range for what? Small ships? Large ships? Does it mean that you spot things before they spot you, or is it pointless due to the ship's size if a small ship can detect you from miles away because of your enormous signal?
    I love the ship, and even if it turns out to be the most useless thing, I'll keep flying it. But man, these questions keep me on my toes, I tell you.

    I think the obsession and love for large ships isnt neccesarily out of utility only but symbolism and a sense of home away from home.
    We do this in real life to as well as other games that revolve around ships and large vehicles/bases.
    Take battlefield 4 for example. The Valkyrie was the home of many marines and is treated as such despite being a war ship. It holds your belonging, refuels your smaller ships and you can essentially live on it for extended periods of time without going to a station.
    Many people want that feeling of returning home from a mission on a mother ship essentially but still feel ready for the next adventure.

I’ve got quite enough (I help run an org and an a member of another, evo as well, and affiliated with a handful of others). Now I’m not saying you guys are what I speak of, but the odds are against ya. I seem to be a unicorn. Been here since April 2014 and I feel like I’m the only one who understands what we have right now as a game and not what we are supposed to have. I don’t hang on the maybes and the what if’s . (Had a guy who hadn’t even tried 3.23 live today and asked when is 4.0 ffs). And I certainly don’t hang on past mistakes and the so called broken promises that 99% of the community seems to harbor. I know I sound a bit salty but I just can’t do it anymore. I was solo for a long time (and about to go back to it) and then around 2021 I decided to look for a crew. And ever since then it’s been nothing But whiny, salty, we love the game but they should do better type of people. Lots of orgs and always make sure the orgs are run by guys in my age group and have an age limit on how young but it seems to not matter. Some for 2 days, some for 2 months, but it always ends the same way. Sure not every single person does it every day, but there’s always one. New, old, doesn’t matter. Even today. A great 3.23 build that actually works! Sure it had a rough start, which was intended so servers didn’t melt and cause us to have weekend of rebuilding backend like 3.18. But noooo, All I hear is negativity.
      Now if you made it through this and said that’s not us, we genuinely love the game and understand the development and the building of tech and how sometimes things have to be redone to keep up with new tech, that negativity only breeds more negativity. That a new guy coming in with bright eyes and big aspirations can be ruined in 6 months by their own lack of understanding and they don’t need help from salty veterans to speed up that process for them. If that’s you, hit me up and we can see about it.
      Sorry man. Just had enough of the community this last few years. It used to be a niche well adjusted, giving, and courteous community. All that has really gone down the toilet in the last 4 or so years.

    Polaris is exciting because it punches up. I look at every other huge ship as a pretty explosion. The Iron Clad is getting all the smoke when it comes out. I got the little cargo Argo MPUV to pick up the cargo and I'll have a couple of those in my hanger. I look at it as a sniper. Hit and run. Then once the target is down, move in and sent out the Argos to take any cargo or components that survived.
    With the price its going to be to buy in game, my real life time is worth more than the cost in time it would take to grind in order to get them. Plus I look at all the ships as donations to the game development. I dont buy any new ships though if they don't have LTI.

      I would like to see the Liberator sooner then later. It could be used as a mobile base for salvaging with a vulture or mining with a prospector (since we are going to be able to buy extra mining bags). If the Liberator can hold the Expanse, then you can have a small mobile mining and a refining group since you wouldn’t need a large crew to operate the ships.

  • @bluexgreen1
    @bluexgreen1 Місяць тому

    Having some kind of carrier or other form of support ships will be a big deal in very large systems like pyro. A mining convoy can protect itself from solo light fighter harassment by setting up asteroid mining in an out of range location, for example.
    Liberator would be the small org carrier. Kraken is the next size up, for medium size orgs or bigger. Polaris is a side-grade for the Kraken. More mobility and damage potential but much reduced ship carrying capacity.
    Polaris is a solid option for an org base in that it can do a decent job at everything, as opposed to more specialized ships like the Hammerhead, Perseus and Carrack.
    There are a lot of practical ship combinations for medium+ orgs. When I see someone chatting about how great the Polaris is, the first/main aspect they praise is always the huge torps. I wonder how much of the popularity of the Polaris is related to the history of S9 torps being a win button for quite a while, rather than its other merits.

  • @IrisCorven
    @IrisCorven Місяць тому

    The bed logging thing isn't a deal breaker for me. I liked the idea behind it, but every implementation we've seen has been very broken or incomplete. If it worked 24/7, and was reliable when it came to friends/crew sleeping on your ship, that'd be one thing. But as it stands, it's just another layer of complexity that makes hopping back in the next day a hassle. If I can just park my ship in an asteroid field and log out, and log right back into my pilots chair, or standing in my living quarters, that accomplishes the same thing.
    Not to mention you have entire ships where beds just refuse to work. If you've ever tried to sleep on a Lancer Max, 1 of the 4 beds work, and *to this day* still experience the age-old "stuck crouched in your bed" bug that has apparently been fixed on most other ships. So with PES being a thing, I think any capacity to just log out in your ship, and log back in without hassle is a major win. It's also why I'm patiently awaiting more news on when we can set our persistent hangars to locations other than the core cities - I hate dealing with the framerate chug, transit, and such EVERY time I log in. Every new patch, I throw every bit of gear I have in my ship, fly out to an L1/L2 station, drop it all off, set my respawn, and then claim all my ships over there. The cities are too much of a hassle.

    Your comments about bed logging really hit home for me.
    I have been looking forward to the character creator for a long long time. And it is. so. insanely. disappointing.
    My complaint is that if you select Eye1, but you want it lower on the face, and you grab any of the blend spots on the eye, and drag it downward, the eye will just straight up change into a different Eye. It happens to all the parts of the faces. I honestly don't understand why this is what they came up with, why the are locking you into those faces in such a way that they literally disallow you to change any feature too much, and if you do, it just changes the part. I've never seen a character creator like this, I don't understand the benefit of it. And to extrapolate it out, will this system end up being just your two 'parents' faces so you end up with only two options to blend? That doesn't make sense. So why this system? Seriously.
    Back to your point that at each change some people will decide the game isn't for them. My account is over 12k, and I'm seriously considering, have been in contact with a few buyers already, selling the majority of my account AT 55% because my character and their appearance is very important to me. And frankly I don't think CIG is going to provide us with a system to make characters that look good enough for me.
