  • Chris was smitten from the moment he saw the Austin Healey, and knew that he had to have one. He finally bought one, a beautiful Austin Healey 3000 MK III. In this candid interview, he tells us how much he enjoys driving it and to this day, still takes off his right shoe to drive his car successfully, and feel the pedal under his feet. Over the years Chris has made some pretty great modifications to his car, yet, about 80% of this Healey is original.
In collaboration with #classicmotorfilms, presenting a treat for our classic car community. We hope you all appreciate it!

Fell in love with this car in the 60’s, but realistically knew it was out of my reach financially. When I finally reached a time in life when this dream could come true, I tracked down a British racing green car with tanned interior. I arrive to view the car and finally sit in her, holding that beautiful steering wheel, I found that my height and possibly my shape did not marriage this slim line beauty. How sad was that after all those years dreaming. Loved your video

I saw my first 3000 as a fifth grader in 1962. Even though I faithfully watched Todd and Buzz just to see their car a few moments each episode, I loved the AH 3000. That same Healey is to this day owned by the same man, my third grade teacher’s son. I got kind of close as my brother gave me his 62 TR3 in 1967. That was the year the Healey was canceled in the US. I got a 59 C2 in 1968 just before my 17th birthday. But the Healey was the one car I always wanted to own, alas, I live in a very rural area and not being mechanically inclined and no one around to work on it ( I learn that from owing the TR3), so I never pursued the 3000. Over the years I’ve owned a lot of sport cars, TR3, 260z, 280z, 58C2, 03 C5 vert and my current car, a16, C7 Stingray. Each car was special in its own way, but I would trade all of them to have a perfect 3000 MK III. So John, if you are reading this know that you gave a 10 year kid a great memory all those years ago when I saw you in that Healey at old Oak Grove School. Take care old friend.

...while at college earning an AAS degree...I took a class called Foreign Car Servicing...
...one day I was assigned to tune up an Austin Healey 3000...
...I got it ticking over nicely and took it for an extended test drive...
...I still have fond memories of that day and that car...will be 50 years ago this year...

Thank you for sharing your beautiful Healey with us. As a young pup back in the ‘70’s, I had a ‘64 MKIII and later a ‘60 Roadster powered by a 327 ‘Vette engine which the other members of our local club were fond of calling “the Locomotive”. I didn’t care as I never lost a race. Today I am content with my ‘67 Sunbeam Tiger ( also V8 powered :) and my ‘39 Jaguar SS100. But I still miss my Healeys!!

The Austin Healey 3000 MK III was the 1st new car I bought back in 1965. Pearl white & I had red & blue stripes going down the right side of the car. I still loved that Austin Hewley. I did some mature racine with it and that was a blast. Seeing your car brought back so many great memories. I will use your Austin to show my grandkids what kind of car I use to drive & race.

I had a 3000 in 1970, straight 6, 3 su carbs, electric overdrive, plexiglass side windows. Positive traction rear end ,2 +2 . Mine was a little rough, blue paint had faded in places but, I loved that car.
I had to sell it when I started my family. Wish I still had it😢

When I was in the Army, stationed at the NATO HQ in Naples, Italy, a major bought a 3000. He flew to England and made the purchase at the factory and drove it back. As I vaguely recall, this was 1963, he paid $2,600 U. S. I was a first lieutenant and that price was nearly six months of my take home pay. Needless to say I drive a Beetle.

Chris, I share the same affair as you, the Austin Healey 3000 Mk. III. For me, the big Healey is the perfect car. Enzo Ferrari declared the E-type Jag to be the most beautiful car, but, although the Jag is magnificent, to my eyes, after decades of very close scrutiny, I find the Jag a little nose heavy. To me, the Healey is perfectly balanced. My biggest problem is that I have never owned one, in fact, I have never even driven one and at 75, I probably won't in this lifetime. The closest I came was my Mk.II Sprite that I had during my senior years in high school when I life guarded during the summers, the perfect existence for a young Canadian male. I loved that car and the freedom it gave me, but it also made me realize just how much I would appreciate its big brother, Thanks again for the guided tour of your beautiful dream vehicle, you lucky guy!!!

My first car - a 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MK III in british racing green. I had a whole lot of fun with that car. I detailed it, yes they degraded rapidly with use, repainted it in a metallic copper /gold and sold it. In 1980 I had $4,000 US cash in hand, and truth be told a bit more, saved to replace my work truck. Temptation in the form of an ice blue 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MK III with an asking price of $4.500 appeared. Yes, I was saved from temptation, for as I considered and we negotiated a bit, on Sunday morning I sat bolt upright, from a sound sleep in my bed, with the words "HEAVY DUTY 4-WHEEL DRIVE PICKUP" ringing in my head. I checked the Sunday paper and saw the words "HEAVY DUTY 4-WHEEL DRIVE PICKUP - DEALER COST". My new blue work truck.
You are blessed with a beautiful car - have fun.

    Magnificent car!
I know exactly what you mean.
I have a 1981 Porsche Flatnose that is also one of the loves of my life.
If it is possible to love an inanimate object, I love that car.
Such an absolute pleasure to drive, but alas, I fear that old age is driving me from the cockpit.
Enjoy that beautiful machine for as long as you can. 👍

My first automobile. A 1967 3000 MkIII. I think it was $4,600. Went down to Norfolk to see it unloaded. I was just graduating from VMI that June, commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 82nd Airborne division.
My Healey was silver blue with royal blue interior. It had all the Healey foibles; would overheat in no time, as the fan was belt driven off the engine, so if you were at an intersection for any length of time and the engine rpm was low, you could watch the temperature needle start moving. There was little insulation between your throttle foot and the engine, so the “Healey hotfoot” could literally dry your right shoe out on the side next to the firewall.
However, the sound of that in-line engine winding through the gears was compensation enough. That car was a dream to drive. Can’t imagine what a restored 3000 Mk III would cost today. My parachute pay was an extra $115 a month, and that neatly covered the monthly payments on the car, financed by Marine Midland Bank.

I'm a bit confused about it being a left-hand drive Australian car - Oz is right-hand drive, like the UK, NZ, Japan, etc. Unless he's done a conversion for US roads. A stunning car and a great colour. I still miss my old English white, Healey MK 1, which I sold decades ago.

The one I almost bought was in a bit of a state with chassis flex , poor door apertures and a smokey engine . The cost of restoration outweighed the value and Have to say I was dissappointed until I sat in it and despite it being the series 3 , compared to my Sunbeam Tiger at the time , was archaic by the Sunbeam standards which was a finely engineered balanced thing of absolute beauty with its all weather equipment , its all synchro gearbox , sallsbury diff , state of the art suspension , all of which the Healey didnt have in droves . I still regret missing out on having a Healey but pehaps , it would not have lived up to the Sunbeam standards .

English engineering - I had an MGA - coming back from coll one day on interstate - the steering wheel came off in my hands. yes. pure luck I went of into a field rather than a bridge support..... first thing I did when home, drill a hole for a cotter pin. apparently too advanced for English engineers. Also had a T6 ( car ) with, umm English electronics.

Curious, why does this car have 2 different reg plates, front is AHM 111D, while back is AD 66 ? anyone knows why? LOVELY car

    • @joecrafted
      @joecrafted 2 роки тому

The black plate (AD 66) is the California license plate. Such a low number and the black plate indicates it has been registered in California for a very, very long time. The AHM 111D is a vanity plate and not a real license plate in California or anyplace in the USA. Is more similar to license plates in the UK and Europe.

@killuminati50 If you haven't found it already, you'll find a looped cable end just above the parcel shelf. Give it a nice tug and the hood should pop up. Note there there are hood catches on both sides at the end of the hood when you try to lift it up.
