Green Moon what ??? They are still there characters. They retain there mental state inside the fusion. That’s like saying if I put a slice of turkey in between some bread it isn’t turkey anymore.
"Say you're sorry or you and your friend will die of starvation" "No" "Okay cool" (That's how it actually went down) Nah, man don't forget the worst one: "Stop acting like a child!" "No u" "I AM DEFEATED"
The gems: “ok so we’re in home world we gotta play it cool and play by their rules to guarantee our safety and our audience with White Diamond.” Steven: “ok buuuuuut this dance is boring and lame and I don’t care that I’m in the throne room of the most ruthless empire in the galaxy, dance with me Connie.” The gems: “Behold the powers of Love and friendship-“ **get poofed**
They also tried to claim that Peridot was asexual because she wouldn't fuse; whilst also saying that fusion isn't sex and is a relationship (platonic, abusive, mutual hate, etc.) Its gross and pathetic.
Yeah. I was really disappointed when they said that. Being asexual doesn’t mean you’re incapable of love or a close relationship, I don’t know what they were going for. If there is one thing they need to be clear about- it’s fusion. They can’t seem to make up their minds whether its sex or a relationship
@@patiencewallace8453 A lot of fans were upset for the after thought of a tweet my friend! It felt more like the storyboard artist just wanted to shove in a last minute headcanon and piss off shippers.
Saying "It'S a KiDs ShOw" as an excuse when people point out the Diamonds are Nazis, but then claiming "It'S sO mAtUrE!" when they attempt (very badly) to show mental health issues, is just plain hypocritical.
This reminds me of recently, one of the storyboard artists "confirmed" in a tweet (outside of the show) that Peridot was supposed to be ace/aro this whole time because she never fused. So people within the fandom say that Peridot is "asexual because she didn't fuse." So when people say, "Does that mean Steven had sex with his dad?" They freak out and start to explain how it isn't actually sex? Its ridiculous.

@@Jdudec367 Plot armor is mostly when some deus ex machina happens and saves him, basically when he gets some new ability at the last second or someone appears and saves him. This is done so often that with a simple conbo of shield ball + heal spit, he's basically invincible. Freedom of consequences is basically a side effect of the above, if someone dies, he can rez them (Lars). If he's about get hit with a deadly attack, he can shield it (Most fights, especially when he's alone). If a gem gets poofed, he can fuse with them and rez them (When he falls down the hole in the finale). If he breaks something important, the plot bends to his will and makes the mistake no longer matter (When he forgot a specific talisman that was needed to save a temple, it was revealed to just be a test). Basically, if he makes a mistake that has bad consequences, he can either undo, nullify it, or it didn't matter anyway.
While I do think that incorporating adult themes into children's cartoons isn't bad in itself (Avatar the Last Airbender handled things like genocide, mental illness, and physical abuse phenomenally), the writers of Steven Universe were just too obsessed with their own agendas and just not competent enough writers to pull things like that off.
True, I don't think that saying kids shows shouldn't be mature or complex just cause kids are stupid and aren't gonna get it. Cartoon networks demographic is actually pretty broad. Sure kids that are like 6 aren't gonna get it and they might just watch for bright colors and comedy. But the child fandom of SU actually consists of kids 9-12. And adults and teens watch the show too. Sure the writers could handle the themes better but it's kinda shity to just say that the show is for babies and toddlers and putting mature themes and lessons into a show at all is brainwashing kids. My point is that each age group and individual is gonna get something different they enjoy out of it and gatekeeping it isn't gonna help anyone. Kids might come back to watch it when their older and early like the mature emotional stuff. I'm doing that for adventure time right now since I was like 5 when it aired.
I like their normalization of lesbian / gay. "Cartoons shouldn't have adult themes" is pure insanity. When i was a kid in the 70s/80s watching Starblazers, it was about planet-destroying, nuclear genocide. Some people are, "cartoons shouldn't be sexualized". Well, Starblazers again, the main character clearly had a love relationship (hetero, but still) with the main chick in it. I mean, a kid can watch their parents hug and kiss a million times a day anyway. Some of the "adult" themes hit in Steven Universe usually end up with the characters raging, crying and clearly having PAIN... which is an accurate depiction and not a bad message. AND... and... the showrunners did it within their OWN franchise, not by overtaking a one that existed already. (Marvel, DC, Disney itself... destroying franchise after franchise with character-mutating politics...)
JinzoCrash Well, the normalization of homosexual relationships is something that isn't accepted by everyone, for hundreds of different reasons. The question that remains is "Should cartoons be used as a political tool, even if indirectly?"
@@perpetualsystems If you see gay relationships as nothing but 'political', you aren't mature enough to be analysing writing, sorry. It's just a relationship, like any straight relationship in a cartoon, nothing political about it. And if some people get offended by the normalisation of homosexual relationship, well that's just tough shit, sometimes you have to just grow up and accept the real world, and that's not aimed at you, it's aimed at the people who don't like the normalisation of homosexual relationships.

I liked Steven universe. But the only thing I really hated was how "easy" they solved the major problems. Like c'mon, you're telling me just TALKING to white diamond, the most powerful being in the universe, would make her change? Like in her perspective some pleb little dude is telling her to change when she could've been like fought or crushed or sum. And also when Steven becomes a monster. Everything in that felt rushed. They could've made Steven evil and made another series trying to stop monster Steven or something. IDK, the endings felt rushed
pingus 19 ok, so imagine your daughter dies. And then 14 years later you discover she’s actually alive. And you try desperately to set everything back to how it was before the tragedy, because you see your role as keeping up appearances and holding everything together, and making everything right. So you hold up this incredibly fragile facade that everything is ok, and can just go back to the way it was before. That’s white diamond’s perspective. It isn’t just Steven making a one off joke that shatters her composure, it’s years of grief hidden behind a mask. The thing that turns blue and yellow, (and white too to some extent tho this isn’t really shown until future) is being woken up to the fact that it was THEIR actions and abuse that pushed pink away and caused them to lose her, and now they were doing it again. For white, the final straw is realizing that she’s wrong, that she isn’t making everything better, that pink is really gone, when she pulls out Steven’s gem. THAT’S what broke her. At that point she was just groveling and spiraling from this realization, she was going to lose her composure no matter what, the sick burn on steven’s part was just a nice touch that really pushed her over the edge. Was the ending rushed? Yes, absolutely. But that was because of limitations put on the crewniverse. Rebecca had to fight HARD just to get a handful more episodes to finish off the season, and at the time they didn’t think the show would be continuing at all. They did what they could within the limitations they had, and ultimately I think the finale said everything it needed to say.
I think the ending was pretty rushed but the future one it was good a build up for the last 2 episodes i mean they could barely make the last season but you expect them to make one for defeating steven

I am still trying to wrap my head around why anyone would make a show about a hyper intelligent war faring alien species that are highly implied to have wiped out every other sentient species in the galaxy and give them more emotional baggage than a pack of emo teens in the early 2000s at a My chemical romance concert.
Blobbert Mcblob Yeah. Kind of defeats the purpose of having an alien species that was not familiar to the human kind. Suddenly, now they are more emotional than your average person.
I also really like how after that, people try to defend the show by saying it’s a children movie. It’s like making a children’s movie out of journeys of SS deserter in Russia... Wait, that’s what they did.
@@Probablylani Gems are regarded as if they are extremely computer based. They function almost similar to AI, honestly. Introducing humanity to AI is what this series is most akin to. The halo fandom isn't anywhere near as cancerous. Tumblr and edgy 13 year old fangirls, the main 2 reason fandoms become complete and utter sewage, tend to not really play fps games.

I agree with you. I’ve always thought they listened to him just bc of Rose. And suf was horrid. I also liked su but they decimated suf. the basically spread the message that ptsd is a good excuse to freaking murder your friends
Spinel's backstory is a clusterfuck of multiple stories that clash horribly. rebecca wanted Spinel to symbolize maturing and growing up. the movie writers wanted pink and spinel to be friends who drifted away due to life circumstances. despite their goal, spinel ends up being written as an abandoned puppy, no metaphor needed. abandoning a dog and maturing faster than your friends are two completely different scenarios. you can't shove both ideas into one character. depending on who you ask, Rebecca, the writers, or the fans, spinel has a completely different backstory. Spinel is pink's literal toy, childhood friend and abandoned puppy all at the same time. you can't have all of this symbolism packed into one character because they contradict each other. spinel is still somewhat relatable…..if you exclude her extreme murderous tendencies. when the movie came out, some of the fandom was very vocal about her actions being justifiable. people legitimately tried to agrue that trauma is an excuse to hurt people yet become completely hypocritical when applying it to other characters. abuse is wrong, it's not up for debate nor "just an opinion". can't believe grown adults need to be told this.

The shows creators came out when fusion was first introduced and said it was meant to be a metaphor for sex. You can't undo or unsay that, so why would you make Steven and his Dad fuse? You're either intentionally trying to confuse kids

Tbh i feel like Garnet’s “truth” trigger was cause of how the revelation that Rose was Pink Diamond full on broke her; literally. Sapphire thought her and Ruby’s relationship was a lie, and therefore couldn’t see it as true love. But now, they can both be together because its how they truly feel about each other, without needing the “fake” validation from the person who taught them to love themselves- Rose taught them to never question themselves, to never question their love, but now Garnet can exist with the answer she needed to know: she’s the “true kinda love”.
I actually wish they would’ve given the gems their own “decision” of their gender pronouns since they don’t have a sex. So if they feel comfortable with “he” take it. It basically sucks that there is no logic behind this
I agree with everything you said about Steven universe, that show went downhill so fast ever since the Pink diamond was rose quartz reveal. except for the fact that adults can't enjoy cartoons. Samurai Jack was made for kids in cartoon network and is one of the best TV shows for all ages

@@TheGoldenPlatoon757 Lol thanks. I usually don't go too deep with examining this shows writing anymore, because the level of fury I get at the writers for completely fucking up the characters, especially Lapis.
I mean, I do like spinel, but I understand the hate surrounding her character: her symbolism, her justification, her place in the story. Steven Universe: The Movie was my first inclusion with the show and I didn't find it bad. As someone just entering the series I could understand a great amount of the world and backstories of most characters. Of course, having just gotten into the show and having not watched anything before suf, I didn't get much of the hate for Steven himself. It seems the main arguments going around are how "unrealistic" mental illness or redemption is portrayed in this show, and I do agree with some of them. Spinel threatened an entire planet and then was mostly forgiven for her actions, and then sent to the diamonds as a "coping method" for them, which really doesn't help spinel's trauma at all. Also goes to show a flaw in Steven's perfect character arc where he just let her be sent off. He didn't really forgive her, I mean he didn't instantly see her as a friend, which shows a small deal of hate hidden under that goodwill golly smile. I'd argue here that Spinel, although redeemed easily, wasn't really forgiven. Steven did the "talk it out" method, but as soon as the problem is resolved, he leaves her, TWICE. I think this is where Steven is first shown to have changed. The three gems in homeworld were kept around (I don't know the "because" part yet), probably because he liked them, but when it came to the diamonds and spinel, he was overjoyed to have them gone. That's a great deal of selfishness for a good guy, but his thoughts and actions are realistic here. I mean, his only thoughts were to get rid of the problem, but still keep up his ego to hide his darkness. That is dark, terrible, and goes to show the good guy isn't perfect, and I think he should have at least been punished for this. Damn this post is long. I meant to talk about Spinel here but then got into Steven XD.
The only thing that steven universe was missing for me was STAKES. Steven universe future while not infinitely better definitely is building up to some big STAKES involving previous events as PTSD. STAKES ARE GOOD STAKES ARE GOOD STAKE ARE GOOD STAKES ARE GOOD STAKES ARE GOD STAKES ARE GOOD STAKES ARE GOOD edit:STAKES ARE INDEED GOOD. Edit: it’s cool that folks understand and also BURGER
The stakes in the first series were that the planet was gonna get blown up though. Those were some high fuckin stakes, and that ended up being a really shit fuckin payoff.
Jason Thomas Yeah thats because high stakes aren’t what makes them good. When people are rooting for a relationship, the “will they, won’t they” are the stakes. Artificially bumping up stakes is something that amateur writers do because they can’t make people legitimately invested in their characters.
The Steven Universe movie was like a direct-to-video Disney sequel that couldn't be released on VHS because nobody has a VCR anymore so in order to make some money off of it, they had to broadcast it.
@@technoruffles7747 They released an epilogue series which focuses on Steven having mental trauma from all the stuff that happens in the show, and no they didn't end it because people stopped watching, the community is very alive.
I haven't met a single child who likes Steven Universe all the Steven Universe fans I've come across are adults and it's my personal theory that it wasn't even intended for children to begin with.
HadouKeyblade Yeah all the kids in my family want to watch Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball and Teen Titans Go but they change the channel when Steven Universe comes on. I once asked my niece (she's 10) if she likes Steven Universe and she told me she finds it boring. That just supports my theory that Steven Universe was never made for 6-11 year olds and was in fact made for childish adults. If you watch the pilot it looks like it would feel a lot more at home on adult swim and I think that's what it was intended for but whoever green lit it decided that it would be more at home on their kids block and I'm guessing that's why the animation for the final product was made to look cuter as well.
Johnny Joestar It claims to be aimed at 6-11 year olds but like I said I don't know a single child under 13 who likes this show the youngest Steven Universe fan I know is 13 (my friends little brother) and I don't think it was ever intended for children and if Cartoon Network could let the writers have the freedom to do what they want instead of trying to make it kid friendly it would probably make a much better show. I might be wrong though.
*3 things occurred to me watching this.* 1. _Steven Universe_ is a show that would be better if *everything* was taken at face value with no faulty metaphors. And better written in general. 2. How on sweet Holy Terra is "survivors of other Gem colonies take revenge" *not* the plot of this movie? I would watch the heck out of that! I'm imagining macho metal men who can shatter gems with their ultra-pecs. 3. Ooooooo, your use of SimCity 4 music makes me smile, my man.
Yeah the women/ not actually women and fusion is sex / fusions not actually sex stuff is annoying and confusing. It makes it hard to get invested in it.
@@mahliwowe I'm with you there.👍 I get the impression that they didn't think the "genderless gems" thing all the way through. If they just said _they're all female,_ it wouldn't be a big deal, considering we've had media that loads of people like with female-centric casts before. That and the Gems are a species that reproduce by plunging large "Injectors" into the surface of a world to give life to new Gems. Hmm... Oooohhhh good grief, *Fusion* is so poorly conceived and creates _so many unfortunate implications_ that it actually put me off the show. I know they tried to backpedal on it and say it's 'harmony in any relationship', but like it or not they established it as "sex" early on - with rather on-the-nose imagery, might I add - and that's not something you'd forget. *Stevonnie and Steg* are probably the most disturbing examples considering that knowledge. 😨
@@DoctorInk20 not to mention they recently stated Peridot was asexual because she didn't fuse. But none of the gems have genitalia so they are all asexual. Ugh it makes me uncomfortable. I've never watched a kids cartoon where I had to work out the logic of a characters sexuality and genitals to understand it. Especially with Stevonnie and Steg like you said 🙃
@@mahliwowe @Mahli Wowe That's another good point you've made. This is supposed to be _a children's show, ages 8-11..._ yet the audience chiefly seems to be teens and college students. It's no surprise merch didn't sell well. XD Ah, _Peridot._ The one good character. Two things with her: 1. She, like other Homeworld Gems, should have been used to contrast against the Crystal Gems more, just to show how rigid, regimented and uptight the Homeworld truly is. That is, if the CGs didn't act pretty weird and alien to begin with and were actually integrated into human society. 2. That statement you mentioned basically says to me, "Hey if you're uncomfortable with being in a threesome your first time, there's a problem with you!" Which is not something you want in a children's show! Like you say, drawing a flowchart for character sexualities is not a priority. XD Sweet Threepwood's beard, my brain breaks down thinking about! XD Nobody thought this through! If they took out the sex bit and just made it a cool superpower (that has other applications), it'd be fine! We'd all be comfortable and enjoying ourselves, but we can't! Freedom of consequences is basically a side effect of the above, if someone dies, he can rez them (Lars). If he's about get hit with a deadly attack, he can shield it (Most fights, especially when he's alone).
What writers? It's just Sugar, and we see how that turned out
JinzoCrash Well, the normalization of homosexual relationships is something that isn't accepted by everyone, for hundreds of different reasons.

Undertale was a great indie game. Tumblr which flocked to it has to be gassed though.

Ah, yes, you should always listen to teenager how to run your country, 14-16 yeas old kids are always have the best ideas about how politics works. Let's not lie to ourselves, Gems only listen to him because he is Pink's son, not because he is right. I like Steven Universe, but Steven Universe Future is weirdly depressing and making plot point like teenage marriage, murder and suicide in a kids show. I like kids shows even if I'm adult because I like fun, relaxing and inocent of it.
I agree with you. I’ve always thought they listened to him just bc of Rose. And suf was horrid. I also liked su but they decimated suf. the basically spread the message that ptsd is a good excuse to freaking murder your friends
I mean....he has been right but not always they don't always do what he says
also when was suicide ever mentioned in the show? Anyways yeah I would still say he was mostly right it seems.
You shouldn’t dislike a kids show because it tackles dark topics. You should dislike it because it handles them POORLY

Of course, because giving a bug the same value as a human doesn't make you look compromised in the moral department.
Also, use your wording. Not all humans do that for fun -.- I've never once thought about putting salt on a slug, or crushing ants, or even stepping near spiders (arachnophobia is a thing).
Anyways, the trauma doesn't justify her one bit. It doesn't. It doesn't matter how you metaphorically put it, she isn't justified.

And I was being _partially_ respectful.
yea like spinel was maturing a little and then at the end we saw her revert to the playful thing she started out as when the diamonds came to take her and become her new pink

And that's exactly what _Pink Diamond_ did as well. Yet, she gets the hate constantly. Any character development was thrown out the window so we could feel sorry for Spinel, and it honestly made me dislike Spinel as a character. Not because she's bad- but because she's just like Lapiz. _"Feel sorry for them. Feel sorry because they've been through so much. Wait maybe
I think the worst part about Steven Universe is that they tried to include a redemption arc for the genocidal space nazis that have wiped out entire planets. Kinda hard to forgive them for multiple counts of genocide. Don't forget, they would've wiped out earth too if Steven had failed to take time out of his busy life to stop the world from ending
Well as EZ pointed out, it's not completely clear that they were actually the bad guys (Having planets get destroyed to reproduce) (But there were some gem fusion experiments or something, I guess that could be counted as an act of wrongdoing? But Garnet herself was at the fault of that whole experiment going up..+ The Human Zoo or whatever). I mean, if anything Rebecca herself looks like the ultimate bad guy, I would say this would suit her;
"Evil is not accepting bribes knowing that you destroy an innocent but believing that good is done: faith with a smile or educated dogma not touched by doubt, ideology with charisma."
It’s like redeeming Hitler. He killed millions and then his nephew makes him blush and he’s a good guy now. That’s not how it works.

Then Steven Universe Future happens and Steven suffers from PTSD and tries to force his ideologies on others. At this rate, Steven will create some form of a Gem Manifesto. To be honest, if that happened in show I might watch it again.
This is why him controlling White Diamond with his Pink Bitch Energy was a missed oppurtunity in Homeward Bound: He would've litterally had to face the consequences of his actions by fighting a representation of his fear of change. Considering how much they bash his Mom, I'm surprised they didn't do that.
I hate how the movie and Future dug up Pink Diamond’s (metaphorical) corpse and spat on it for drama purposes. After Change Your Mind I thought we had moved on from using Pink Diamond for dramatic plot reveals. She’s gone, end of story.
But then they have to make her someone who abandoned her puppy/toy (actually what the movie shows us Spinel was like), and almost killed her friend (Pink Pearl) in a fit of rage
I liked Steven Universe because the idea of highly advanced rock aliens, and how their world works, not to watch Steven talk down the strongest, highest status being in Gemkind by saying “no u”
Wait now that i think about it, why were the gems colonizing other planets qnd stripping them of theyr resources to make other gems, they cant die of aging so no need to make more and keep the species from going extinct and they dont need to eat or drink either so no need to strip a planets resources for food either, theres no other species we see or hear about thats on the level of humanity when it comes to technological advances let alone the gems, soo they have no need to make more warriors to protect themselves, they have no need for a military force either, not even to keep theyr own in check since all gems are completly subservient to the diamonds it seems, theyr entire existence seems like mystery that the shows staff didnt think about, or didnt think was important enough to show to us squandering even more of the potential world building the show could have had

I don't think that's an accurate comparison, the movie's writing was pretty bad but it's not unbearable.

There's a new season? I thought they wrapped up because people stopped watching the show.

Kids stopped watching the show years ago
I haven't met a single child who likes Steven Universe all the Steven Universe fans I've come across are adults and it's my personal theory that it wasn't even intended for children to begin with.
@@pinkdiamond1847 Same, my family has a lot of young kids and not a single one of them actually cares about this show.
The show is more directed towards Teens and Young Adults than kids.
*3 things occurred to me watching this.*
XD
Ah, _Peridot._ The one good character.
XD
Sweet Threepwood's beard, my brain breaks down thinking about! XD Nobody thought this through! If they took out the sex bit and just made it a cool superpower (that has other applications), it'd be fine! We'd all be comfortable and enjoying ourselves, but we can't!
Not gonna lie, I've been writing my own analysis of SU and how I'd rewrite the whole thing to make it work and this conversation helped me to flesh out the "Fusion" aspect. So thank you. XD
@@DoctorInk20 When you're finished writing it I'd love to read it. I used to love the show, but honestly after Future I realized how awful it really was. So I love watching and reading stuff that trashes it.

Peridot is why season one and three are so good tbh.
24:54 I think I’m actually someone who the show is for, which is a little odd since I love it when you criticize the show. I watched the show when I was 11 and it was released but as I got older I got attached to the show (probably due to nostalgia). I still notice the problems with the show (which makes it fun to listen to you bash it) but I still enjoy the show regardless. Don’t worry I do not support the fan base or the writers beliefs or certain messages that don’t make sense. Thanks EZ PZ! Also do you have any good recommendations for some good shows I can watch?
