The Steven Universe Movie Has Some Issues

- The production value of Steven Universe: The Movie is greater than ever, but the slick captivating exterior can't make up for the narrative problems that plague the experience as a whole. Steven Universe: The Movie looks great, sounds great, and is packed with emotion, but lacks substance behind that energy.
The way the movie treats the Diamonds is awful, the main cast only retreads experiences they already had, and Spinel (while zany, wacky, and sympathetic) has a character arc that's not particularly compelling and ends rather horrifically. Thematically, there's too many issues that fun packaging can't cover up, and thus I didn't like Steven Universe: The Movie. Spinel's clown shoes squeaking did amuse me though.
I endlessly looped "Other Friends" because it was tied for my favorite song (with Disobedient), and it got stuck in my head super bad, and thus I shall make it get stuck in all your heads too. Also, it just works really well as background music.

I feel like Peridot has the best redemption arc out of all the villains in Steven Universe.
Peridots story felt really authentic. It wasn’t rushed. His story had a moral but it didn’t feel preachy.

The diamonds being flat out obsessed with taking care of someone to the point of LEAVING THEIR ENTIRE RACE to come live with Steven is... Really troubling
Are we meant to assume they treated Pink like that? Cuz they didn't. And the fact that swapping Steven with Spinel has practically no effect on how the Diamond's "adore" their small new friend shows just how little they actually care for either of them as individual equals, but as nothing more than entertaining amusement
atleast with steven they weren't abusive or cruel to him afterwards...hard to say what will happen next but I doubt there could be anything that could replace spinel anymore. Also it shows that their becoming better people and are willing to try to get along with others.
Ethan Micallef I think they want to make up for how they treated Pink, but agree it’s still very unsettling.
@informed interest them taking in Spinel doesn't mean they don't love Steven...I think they were just needy for anything/anyone who could be tied to pink.
1. They were intergalactic tyrants - moving where they are usually located to another planet does not even begin to describe this action as giving up their power.
2. The Diamonds are more doting than obsessed. They pleaded for Steven not to leave but they didn't force him to stay.
Keep in mind a year ago in-universe they all realized that they actively turned Pink away from them due to lack of affection. Them being very overly affectionate is..baby steps.
3. Maybe? The Diamonds will give Spinel the affection she wants and the Diamonds enjoy her - being related to Pink is what made them take notice of her (because they created her for Pink) but it's not the reason they took her back to Homeworld.
TO BE FAIR the Diamonds were properly redeemed in future
I like how the art-style for Spinel reflects an animation style that has been largely abandoned.

I found it really funny the way the Diamonds acted in this movie. They're only being good for the sake of pleasing Steven so if he were ever to go rogue (like an evil thing possessed him) they would jump at the opportunity to be horrible again.
Something else I thought was funny was thinking that in the movie it implied that Pink loved Spinel at first and gradually grew tired of her. It makes sense for the Diamonds to do the same.
I think it was less gradually growing bored....and more she wanted to be a "mature" diamond.

I don't think so, the Diamonds latch onto everything left of Pink so odds are they're gonna treat her like a little friend. She makes them laugh and they all can share their stories of Pink. Spinel wants to be the Jokey friend, she doesn't want to change herself, just learn to trust again.
Wich i don't understsnd, someone as a cbildlish, naive and playful as Pink doesn't seem the type to get bored of Spinel, maybe she wanted to seem more capable once she was given earth as a colony idk ....
@@420mralucard She doesn't want to stop being a jester, she does seem much more reserved in how she does this than compared to her original form. Might be that she knows being that much of a jester is what drove Pink away and she doesn't want to drive people away again. Pink left Spinel because there was no sign she could stop joking around for 1 second and it could be seen as how Pink behaves. Leaving her wasn't the right decision, Pink rarely made the right decision (if ever).
Also, where did the “societal equivalent of a toy” get a planet-killing amount of pure bio-poison?

@@dravonianrex5902 Actually, I think it was implied the source came from the garden she was abandoned in. The gardens were super dead when she and Steven arrived, but in her flashbacks, even after 6000 years passed, they were a bit more lively.

Doesnt change the fact that nothing that actually happened in the movie will play an important role.
Steven and Connie's relationship cant progress past where it was in the movie which was (dating?). The diamonds arent going to develop beyond coddling Steven.
Spinel cant be called to at all because she doesnt even move until Steven's message.
So yeah extremely irrelevant. I cant even say that its worthwhile as a finale. Literally everything is exactly the same as it was at the start of the movie. All of the "changes" involve characters that remove themselves from the story.

Yeah, absolutely. It's like the entire fandom forgot that the other three Diamonds did objectively much worse atrocities, on a galactic scale, but no, Pink is CLEARLY the most evil of the Diamonds.

Everyone still dislikes the diamonds to some degree. Blue seems to be more widely accepted than the others.
Squidward yeah, I fully agree. I'm still iffy on Yellow because it's Clear she's Not Heartless. But I think Blue was probably a big part in swaying her to Steven's side and I get the feeling she still doesn't fully understand , or perhaps just doesn't care for, Steven and his beings, and why pink seemed to love them.
White is a big No. I saw a tweet on Twitter with a clip of them coming down to earth, saying how it's a reminder that the diamonds were just pretending for Steven and nothing else.
The way White talks is so transparent in the fact that she doesn't really care it's almost annoying. But it makes sense to me.
I'm a big fan of character design. Especially in a show like this, where colour is an important key role in almost everything.
The "colour" white normally is used to give a feeling of cleanliness, professionalism, sometimes even purity. But in White's case, she is absent of colour. Her first appearance to us shows how Absent she is to the world around her, having not moved in thousands of years and giving nothing back to Steven's pleas. She's emotionally nonexistent in my opinion, even now. Blue feels the most emotion in my mind, it's literally her power, whereas White just doesn't care and may or may not have her own goals in mind.
White is the big reason I was unsure about Spinel leaving with them. If White treated Pink the way she did to Steven, I don't exactly feel like it was best for Spinel to leave with her.

I think Spinel tried to say that the diamonds remind her of the Pink Diamond that played with her, of the happy moments and the smiles, not the trason, remember she said that the smiles and the laughter is what she's after, they remind her of the smiles and the laughter of Pink Diamond, i think that was what they were trying to communicate with the smiles and laughter of the Diamonds. At least that's what i understood in the first place and still after watching this video and the move a second time, i don't know if i'm wrong and i understood everything the other way around, or that thought got lost for some reason

I think season 6 should be skipped and the movie is season 6 and there is just a season 7 it sounds wired but it makes a little sense

In this movie the song isn't a representation, but a device used to convince the antagonist that she needs to find someone else to gain a sense of fulfilment. The message is fine, but it really should have illustrated that the sense of fulfilment comes from the self and not the person you've endeared yourself to.
It wasn't really the song though, she was the one who realised what she was doing didn't make sense, because it wasn't even what she wanted

I wish lapis had gotten an apology from the gems or closure from her anxiety with them. She still doesn't interact with the 3 main gems as much as peridot does which is sad to me.

I'm upset with how shafted Lapis's story was. She wasn't given enough time to complete her full arc and rediscover what's important. She just sorta...fixed herself offscreen.

I'm still salty that the crystal gems NEVER apologized to Lapis for keeping her imprisoned/enslaved in the mirror, let alone have a proper conversation about it after the ocean gem arc or even have any sort of dynamic with her considering the show decided to fridge Lapis via Malachite for season 2 and then just dump Lapis at the Barn from seasons 3-5. Where Steven & Peridot are really the only meaningful character dynamics she gets to have from then on. It's frustrating considering there are several fantastic & emotionally compelling episodes & moments with Lapis, in addition to her great backstory, design, hydrokinesis powers, emotional resonance/themes, beautiful singing voice, and emotionally charged vocal performance by Jennifer Paz. I really wish they could've done more with her considering all the potential she had. Fittingly enough, Lapis barely has any lines in the new movie and most of them are pretty minimal/expositional. Though I suppose that's better than in Change Your Mind, where she literally had no lines despite her final character arch being her overcoming her fear of the diamonds and facing them head-on (While I get that she got to briefly confront Blue Diamond in Reunited, it wasn't exactly followed up well considering she was quickly & comedically poofed by Yellow Diamond not too long afterwards, not to mention the diamonds being "redeemed" soon afterwards kind of devalues Lapis's whole character arc of overcoming her trauma-induced exile & standing up to them)
I mean the diamonds and Spinel still have a lot character growth to do. She calmed down but she really hasn't overcome her trauma and theyre all now co-dependent.

That's where the problems arise. Spinel isnt healed and the diamonds are not properly redeemed, and also directly contributed to pinks abuse and abandonment of homeworld and spinel. Conflict undoubtedly would arise especially given that spinel has clear symptoms of BPD, finding out such information would be catastrophic

Remember in spinels words she said “She changed for the worst?” Meaning she also must’ve adapted to entertaining for one of the worst people as well. Meaning possibly the diamonds and spinel would get along anyway.

I loved spinel honestly. As someone who has abandonment issues, I gotta say that her development and her relapse were really well portrayed. I just didn’t like the conclusion. But, again that’s just my opinion. Also, where the hell was jasper?
Jasper probably went back to Homeworld, considering her past interactions with the crystal gems.
I was very skeptical about Spinel at first. Her bouncy design was just so different that it didn't feel right, and her appearance was really rushed, but I wasn't very disappointed with her. I love how they portrayed the effects of abandonment on her, and the time makes sense when you think that she'd attack in a heat of the moment rage after feeling betrayed. Her style also not only made her a lovable character but a terrifying villain as well since the way she could fight was unlike any other villain we've seen so far. Truthfully, she might be one of my favorite characters now.
I honestly completely forgot about Jasper. How come the diamonds and Spinel got a redemption arc but Jasper didn't? She was a pretty big threat in the show too. Missed opportunity on the movie's part.

Or she just stole it spinel is extremely malleable we saw during the song other friend she's able to make herself completely flat. The warp pad in the garden and clearly wasn't malfunctioning. Lars was able to steal a really fast and even larger Battleship I don't really see it as impossible for spinel to steal that injector
Part 1
I like to think about that it’s just the fact that Bismuth recognize the rejuvenator which wouldn’t make sense because that broadcast was AFTER 2 years with them taking apart the empire. How would she find someone who has something SO OLD that someone like Bismuth would have recognized it but Peridot wouldn’t? It just doesn’t make sense to me. But the injector does make sense that she would need to get it from someone. I mean if we look at the ones on earth from the prime kindergarten, hers is CLEARLY more advanced. The problem is that who would still have one after 2 years? And if someone did give it to her or help then they obviously don’t like what’s happening to home-world now. I think it could be a really good villain tho.
Part 2
This time the villain with attack the Earth and Steven because she is mad at Steven, not Rose or Pink. She is mad at Steven for doing something that his mother or anyone else wasn’t able to do, dismantle the empire. I think this will be a good villain because it’s not his moms mistakes he is paying for, it’s HIS CHOICES that people are disagreeing with. Spinel not killing him would possibly make the gem so mad that she comes after him herself and this time, he can’t talk his way out of it. I would like to see how he handles realizing that he can’t fix this by talking to her an that even if he could get the chance to talk to her, she wouldn’t listen. I would like to see how he deals with realizing that you can’t save everybody because some people, you just can’t ‘fix’ and that there are ALWAYS going to be people against you that won’t go to your side.
I really didn’t understand when spinel decided to stay with the diamonds and she even said that they remind her of Pink Diamond who literally effected her whole life and gave her trauma 🤷🏼♀️

Spinel’s situation is worse, she was told that it was all a game and told to be wait in the same place for 6000 years by doing nothing and hoping for her to come back. It doesn’t matters if she loved spinel, what she did was unforgettable and any sane or Insane being wouldn’t forgive that in one day. She was so mad that she even tried to kill Steven who had nothing to do with his mother’s actions...

I think that was mostly because she found out about everything within that same day. Remember, she left the garden of her own free will. The fact that she had basically no time to process, especially after all that time, put her in a unique position to be incredibly unstable and therefore vulnerable
But besides that, that has nothing to do with being stupid. Have you ever loved someone so much that you can’t even understand it? You can forget about logic. And it affects people regardless of intelligence. It’s funny that you use the word insane. Sometimes love will actually make you wonder if you’re sane or if you’re losing your mind. Sure, in a perfect world it shouldn’t, but this isn’t a perfect world and we’re not perfect people. Sometimes it actually gets really dark. I was really disappointed that the diamonds were reduced to an over coddling joke. I feel like it should be reversed. Steven should've went to homeworld, then the diamonds make a galactic wide announcement. Then Spinel shows up and throws a wrench into Steven's plan to change the Diamond's minds. With the added misconception that Steven is really Pink trying to hide. Then we get the moment where Steven loves himself.
THEN the movie should've been somewhat of a montage of trying to re-educate the Diamonds WITH HELP FROM OTHER OPPRESSED GEMS! Like, I can't stress that enough. We needed to see how bad other colonies got and to see how the Diamonds reacted to their damage. We needed to see how the Diamonds deal with the Cluster. Cause it's still there, may or may not be in suffering because it's literally MILLIONS of gem shards. We could've had montage songs about each Diamond and the thoughts THEY went through during the reconstruction of their entire empire. Instead we got rehashing of characters we already knew about because "there may not be audience members that know these characters" or even "the people that STOPPED WATCHING BECAUSE OF HIATUS need to be caught up."

I didn’t like how things ended with spinel, we went through her “arc” where she said that she didn’t want to be treated as a toy or as an annoying bother. Steven says that he’s spinels friend and that he wolnt abandon her, yet at the end he kinda just dumps her into the diamonds hands so he doesn’t have to deal with her anymore. Spinek is just kinda swept away at the end which I feels goes against her whole arc.
The impression I got was that Steven wanted her to stay but Spinel wanted to go with the diamonds and get a fresh start, and he valued what she wanted more. I can relate to what she wanted.
As for her arc being swept under the rug, if you think about it she’s going back to homeworld presumably to take pink diamond’s place, she’ll be around tons of people who’ll like her, but not just because she’s royalty, since Steven’s influence has changed and will continue to change the way things work there (if not then wouldn’t steven want all gems to come to little homeworld and be influenced by him and the people on earth)

An idea : at one point steven realizes that just like pink diamond he's not perfect. He left things behind, he screwed up a lot, and he gets a flashback to white diamond's speech about him being pink.

Her motivation is to kill Steven and destroy his home.
Realising that Steven is not Pink, she gets frustrated and tries to destroy earth or something

A 4 episode marathon of writing yourself into a corner and trying to avoid facing true villain conflicts and instead taking the high road saying that all villains can be helped if you just talk to them for 2 minutes. The diamonds for 3 seasons were told to be ruthless, unforgiving tyrants, Peridot and Jasper felt like real threats for so long, and they were just side villains. But the diamonds who were supposed to be even scarier are instead left to have a therapy session with Steven and work out their problems instantly once they actually listen to him, Blue Diamond’s original betrayal was decent, Yellow Diamond was far too rushed, and White? White has been turned into nothing more than an overbearing mother, remember when she brainwashed Pink’s original Pearl for several hundred years? Remember when she knowingly corrupted all gems on earth? Remember when she literally ripped out Stevens gem because that’s what she thought would bring Pink back? Yeah let’s just forgive her because she learned compassion after blushing once, demoting them to comic relief. The diamonds got ruined over the last 2 arcs of season 3. Is this explanation better than saying “forgiveness”?
@@Mordalon I remember when Yellow and Blue diamond were revealed in it could've been great and I was so excited and hyped when I saw White Diamond's mural yet not being introduced to it while it was kind of in the background of everyone climbing up the stairs and nobody else noticing it. It was tension and dramatic irony that perfectly played into the fact that this entity, possibly even greater than the two other goddesses ruling over a parasitic empire, that really captivated so many theories and speculation and hype for over 2-3 years. When White Diamond was first introduced, although a little rush to her sudden introduction when healing centipeedle, it was terrifying and scary to see this goddess of the goddesses acting passive aggressive and flat out ignoring steven as a lower entity.
BUT THEN, UNDER 2 MINUTES THIS OVERRULING HITLER OF THE HITLERS WAS REDEEMED
it was such an underwhelming and let down of one of the best cartoon villains that has been hyped up for literal years and it doesn't even make any sense on why it even happened. It was so disappointing for me, especially since I kind of grew up on Steven Universe and arguably the best seasons were 1-2 and maybe some of 3. This show had potential, but the writing was just so weak it didn't hold up for me and many others.

I think it's just really bizarre SU creators and editors allowed it, I don't see a single reason why they would skip their character arc: It's anticlimactic, fans were dying to see the moral showdown and limits of Steven's peacefulness, it doesn't convey any message, which is basically the second plot of this show, and to make things worse it corners the writers into redeeming everyone now. What reason there was to make this decision?
Edit 2: I'm certain it's just a product of slip-ups, but this could be actually beginning of new, manipulative Steven. In just two years he unintentionally made the Diamonds dependent on him to the point where they all go against everything they know and believe in just to appease their adorable Pink Replacement.
When Spinel reforms Steven has no time for talking to her, making friends or all that stuff he did for Peri and Lapis - he just ignores her, letting her tag along just because it's quicker than making her stay. Even when She runs away crying he's doesn't feel bad for her, he just needs to get her memory ASAP. Then, he's happy to hear what made her cry, because it means progress. At the end he's happy to give needy Spinel to overattentive Diamonds, killing two birds with one stone. Easy solutions, putting well being of the close ones before well being of strangers - he's changed for a more seemingly mature version going against his prior morals.
It'd be great to have an arc dedicated to Steven learning not to abuse his newfound authority and go back to his "childish" beautiful values, but the truth is much like Spinel was used by Pink to forget her worries and by Steven to fix a problem she created, the Crewniverse used her to bring in the "There's no such thing as happily ever after line." In a way that makes her even more of a tragic character...

If Spinel may have stayed on Earth with Peridot and the two, she'll get a better glimpse on what REAL friendship is. Instead, she's a new toy to the Diamonds. That's nice?

A lot of it was laid down very early. Zuko was established as a sympathetic villain early (I think as early as episode 2 when we meet the fabulous moral trashfire that is Zhao) and having Iroh as a foil to him helped audiences care about him even when he was chasing the Avatar. I think part of the issue with the Diamonds was the fact that the mystery of Steven's origins needed them to be brought in much later, while Zuko was around since the very beginning.

Even if the Diamonds couldn't help with fixing the damage the drill caused they still could have helped to prevent further damage. Steven even said that before they went to the drill to investigate the actual problem. The Diamonds are the literal most powerful beeing in the whole universe and Steven has the balls to assume that they won't be of any help? Bismuth even tells him that the weapon that took his powers from him was used by the Diamonds. Why not get the people that f*cking invented it to help you out. Who would have more knowledge about gem stuff than the creators of the gem race itself?

I think Steven Universe’s reputation for having inconsistent character models is like the MCU’s reputation for having Terrible CGI/Special Affects
Steven universe has had many many many MANY, and i cannot say that enough, problems with height charts as their storyboard art was barely sketches and clean line art with no real detail other than the characters on screen or the backgrounds even then some of that can be forgiven but what cant be is that the actual height charts for comparison werent even made until after the episodes aired.

I ain’t calling spinels backstory unoriginal, but her story reminds me a lot of Lotso from Toy Story. They were pink toys who loved and cherished their owners,and after suffering from abandonment and seeing their owner live happily without them, they become mad with revenge and attack strangers.
I hate both of them.
But Lotso was hated while Spinel was adored by the whole fandom and had a good ending, and people even got to the point of hating on Steven for a really not good reason (even though he helped Spinel)

There's 3 stages to watching Steven universe
1-. the bliss: you just turn your brain off and enjoy the pretty colors
2-. The fan: You watch the movies and see the message the creators *wanted* to convey
3-. The yikes: your brain eventually turns back on again and you start thinking about it, and then you see how every detail highlights the worse possibilities and how everything but the center is actually very, very coarse.
Or you can just enjoy watching the show.
Might as well, right? I watch this show only for the bliss, didnt care about nitpicking it because its visually stunning and point being that this show is in a kids channel where they want to experience bliss without thinking about the show. Maybe years of harsh maturity made us uncontent to the childhood show that was supposed to be perfect because of nostalgia. Thats my point, thats why i still watch this show just for escapism

At least she has people who actually value her. Pink Diamond always saw Spinel as a replacement. She never cared about her as much as she cared about Pink Pearl, and left her in her garden without looking back. The other diamonds are actually interested in Spinel, and want to learn more about her. She was the only thing of value that they saw in an otherwise devastated landscape. Spinel’s going to be alright.

2:22 I must disagree with you there. Being left behind and replaced is something every single person has felt. That anger, that betrayal, and what it makes you want to do is something we have in common. It was fantastic groundwork to establish a bond between the audience and our antagonist. But Spinel was more than that. Because she actually followed through with her anger.
It allowed the audience to see their anger manifested on screen, and explore where it takes us. And then it comes to a conclusion in the song "Change" , when Spinel tells Steven that he can't choose how she feels, to which he responds that SHE can.
Because that hurt and betrayal doesn't end with revenge, it ends with change.
Not to mention solitary confinement is considered a form of torture with a plethora of side effects that impact one's mental health. Gem or not yikes.

One point I would like to see on the next season is something we see in the movie. Steven is getting selfish and I want him to get call out. He manipulates Spinel to get her to do what he wants. He knows the diamonds are still toxic and yet he let Spinel go with them because he doesn't want to deal with them.
It would be nice, to see Steven acting like his mom. She was adored too. Even Jasper loved her but she still hurts everyone. He's not so different of her.

I doubt this is the last we see of Spinel. Season 6 is still coming out. Sugar has stated that Spinel's story was a 'work in progress' and she has a long way to go. It was a means to wrap up the movie but not the end of the story.

Throught the season 5 the image of Pink Diamond (and by default, Rose) was changing towards a more deep character, at least as i feel it, she wasn't suposed to be seen suddenly as a bad person, steven said himself that he totaly believes what Pink did to Spinel, remember he had such an image of her to the point that he didn't believe Rose shattered Pink Diamond (back when we didn't know they're the same gem). If Steven chaged his vision of his own mother thanks to the events of season 5, why we can't.

Ya know... if Steven universe really wanted to. Even with the diamonds redeemed, there could still be villains who couldn’t be redeemed. The diamonds were willing to change. spinel was willing to change. Jasper has been the closest they’ve been to a villain completely unwilling to let themselves be redeemed.
I don’t know why people forget this core tenant to the show’s themes that you can work to better yourself but you have to be W I L L I NG.
The problem is the redemption arcs don't make sense because from a realistic point majority wouldn't be redeemable. Peridot's is the only redemption arc that makes sense because we actually watched her grow and see her character fleshed out. They gave Spinel a redemption but the whole movie just brushed off her trauma as though she was evil just because she has abandonment issues. They gave the diamonds a redemption yet they're Space Nazis who's committed mass genocide and has extincted multiple races. They gave lapis a redemption but never fleshed out the process to actually fix the issue. The *ideas* and build up to all of them as characters are great but this show seems to always fuck up when it comes to the execution.

Well I mean if u pay attention to the movie its been two years since the diamonds and Stevens in counter and yes we may not have seen there full transition from antagonist to I'm assuming allies we get glimpses of how they changed with yellow talking about disbanding her armies blue talking about no longer shattering and white learning manors even if she still has the idea that some lifeforms are above her it shows that they adapted in that two year span and most likely spinel will come back in some way shape or form if the overall theme of the show is change is possible y wouldn't it show us thinks like quick resolutions for now if we spent two years in Steven time looking at the diamonds growth and observing Steven teaching them manors and other things like that we got a time skip and a preview of how home world has changed along with the diamonds basically the show is about redemption and no matter how Rebecca sugar does it there's always gonna be people who don't like how she does it realism in cartoons is a bit overrated in my opinion and I kinda prefer the happy endings that Steven universe gives me to yank me away from reality its nice and that's what I think me and at least a small group of people enjoy about the show so I hope Rebecca sugar keeps doing her thing with this show

When you look at it from a story point(mind you the show still is targeted towards ALL ages including kids), it just makes you go "wtf". There's nothing wrong with the constant redemption stories, but you can't raise the stakes that's way beyond your story's theme and purpose and try to throw a band-aid over it when we ALL know that real life situations, such as the diamonds, would never be forgiven, condoned, or respected. If you don't want people to judge your show when dealing with real world problems poorly, then don't use real world problems that don't align with the theme of your show. Otherwise survivors or people with first-hand experience get pissed off or depressed because "I could've avoided that situation if we just talked". Which is a pretty fucked up thing to say especially because the show tackled every fucked up problem in the world in the exact same way.

Honestly, I came here to hate and prepared to dislike the video, but the points are properly made and I found myself agreeing with nearly every statement. I feel like this is better than most of the SU critiques I've seen. One of the points I appreciate the most is that the video points out the SU narrative wrote itself into a corner of "everyone must be forgiven," and that Change Your Mind could have been better if the redemption arc of the diamonds wasn't just two episodes. So much of SU criticism I see online boils into "rebecca sugar likes fascists because steven, a 14 year old, didn't want to kill the three dictators he's related to." I don't think Steven shattering the Diamonds would have been necessary to create a more satisfying season finale, but if the showrunners are going to stick with the "every mind can be changed," motto, then you need to execute it well.
But I'm still gonna enjoy Steven Universe. Like, I'm gonna acknowledge that it's flawed and an overall mediocre cartoon, but I still like listening to the soundtrack and looking at the artwork. I've made my mediocre bed and I'll lie in it.

I just realized why the earth wasn’t completely destroyed when spinelle injected all of the bio-poison into the earth.
When spinelle relapses, her target shifts from the earth and pink diamond to just Steven as a person. Spinelle knows for a fact it’ll take about a little over 24 hours for the poison to take full effect and destroy everything (after all, she made it). She’s currently attempting to make Steven suffer as quickly as possible. And how else would you do it by flooding the immediate area with flesh rotting poison? She doesn’t care about killing off the earth anymore, all she wants to kill now is Steven.
It’s like pouring water onto a sponge. If you pour it slowly it’ll all soak in perfectly and there won’t be any spills. But if you dump it all in at once, a good amount of it is gonna spill onto the ground. When it comes to the earth, it’ll still take as long as it would’ve before. No matter what. I think most of the bio-poison was washed away into the ocean and never really took effect on the earth on its own. But it’ll be fairly easy for Steven to fix that. Just wanted to say it since it was just kinda sitting in my brain

One thing that bothered me about it was the time gap in which it takes place. Spefically, Spinel finding out about Steven.
So Spinel sees the message, transforms into her mentally broken self, comes up with a plan to destroy Steven and his planet, finds a rejuvenator, a scythe that resets gems and travels to earth in LESS THAN A DAY. A few hours AT MOST. That's ridiculously fast

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I feel like Spinel would have been a very interesting character to show a relationship between a human and a Gem with. This is mostly because the only one we have seen is with Greg and Pink/Rose yet that relationship itself is only as whispers and echos rather than a full blown understanding. The thing is, since the diamonds are now intermingling with humans, this type of relationship is now becoming more inevitable so this could be a neat way to jump start the idea.
The main idea for this is because this would give her what she wants, having 'someone' but this way she's not being treated as a toy. The reason I liked this idea was because it would be the start of her arc, not the end that it would seem at face value. She would still show this level of dependency, that she feels like she *needs* the relationship and that's why she's there. At first she'd act like the only reason to exist is because of this new bond, showing almost a sign of regression, and the person she's with could show that's not how this works. Wanting someone because you "want" to be with them, not because you "need" to be with them. Imagine seeing her where she's, at first, unable to understand the difference between the two. This could cause her to self reflect on what she wants personally, and who she really is. It could even end with a breakup of the two in a mutual and respectful way if they had a later season, where she realizes she doesn't want this relationship because she was only in one because she felt like she needed to be there for someone. Now, she wants to just be there for herself. Sending a message to those who only seek relationships because they feel like they need one to seek validation, but in the end the only person they need to really make happy is themselves.
Shit, you can make it even more touching if she went back to that person at a later time, now really realizing that she is coming back to the relationship because it's something that she wants, rather than something she needs; causing the relationship to be much stronger because of it. Though, if you did this, you'd have to show a very different type of relationship in order to show some actual character growth. The first one showing her almost attached and unable to get away because she feels like she needs it, and now the two feel more free and are able to accept that she doesn't need to be around the other all the time in order to be considered with them. Imagine where every scene she's in during the first part being this whole arc around where's never not near the other person, and if she did come back then they'd be found together as much as they are apart. Truly closing her arc at this point showing she's now doing what she wants to do, for her, not doing what she thinks she needs to do like so many gems have been stuck in.
I mean, imagine the line of her getting hurt for this person, her gem cracked to raise the stakes, and he shouts something like 'You didn't need to do that,' and she just responds with.
"I know... I did it because... wanted to.
To... protect you."
and she just poofs.
I think a scene like that could have some actual value rather than just... being over and done with like a used napkin.

@@blitz4506 When people are saying that, they mean that it's weird that the WRITERS wrote Spinel into accepting that compromise; and why Steven as a character would ever allow it. Whether the characters are okay with it in the actual show or not is not really the issue; it's a narrative issue. The writers are literally telling us one thing, and then doing something completely opposite to that moral and passing it off as something that is completely fine.
Spinel wanted a friend, and Steven is very much the type of person to accept that friendship. That is the framework that the show has long established and built up. But for the first time; Steven did not do that. And Spinel rejected her own framework, the narrative she built up, by saying the people of earth couldn't be her friends. It's just weird.
The problem with the steven universe crew, is that they constantly write things like this. Where we know what they are GOING for- but thats not how the characters actions translates. The writers are always going for acceptance and reconciliation; but the way they write often translates into abuse instead(I.E Lapis Lazuli). I agree with a lot of people who say what happened with Spinel was contradictory to the narrative.
Whether the characters in the show explained it away or not, it narratively doesn't make any sense. Functionally, Spinel is a replacement pink diamond now. A replacement child for the diamond authority. Which is a position both Pink Diamond AND Steven resented and felt was toxic. And the movie literally STARTED with Steven being resentful towards being trapped as the diamonds plaything. So although the characters are written to say it's fine- that doesn't really explain away the actuality of the situation Spinel was put in, and that Steven DID(by the narrative) essentially cast her away because he wanted the diamonds off his back. Which is an action that registers as toxic.
Spinel didn't get a friend like the movie had built up to, she instead got parents. No matter how you deconstruct it; that makes no sense. The ENTIRE movie, she wasn't asking for parents. She wanted another best friend. And that is not what she got. Think of it this way; say YOU got dumped by your best friend. You are all sad about it, meet your ex-best friends relative who talks you through it and you express the desire to find better friends..... But in the end you meet this persons parents and then they say 'Hey, now you can be a replacement child for MY parents and your ex-best friends parents!' and for whatever reason you accepted that as the perfect compromise to your situation.
Steven didn't object to Spinel going with them, and didn't try hard at ALL to be an actual friend to her- which was her only desire. For reference; he has put far more effort into his relationship with Lapis; who has been WAY more unwilling and vindictive in their relationship from the beginning, than Spinel. Which, upon reflection, is pretty annoying. You can still like this movie and be critical of it- which is what people like Uncivilized Elk and Huckleberry87 have been doing.

I had a lot of fun with the movie on my first viewing, but damn if I can't agree with all of this. Heck, even on my first watch I had to double-take at the ending for the exact same reason: the film put the abuse victim in a situation where they're incredibly likely to relive their abuse. I understand the idea they were *going* for: find people who actually love and respect you so you can recover your sense of love and trust. I like that. But them expecting us to believe the Diamonds of all characters will adequately serve that role for Spinel and not treat her as just a replacement for Pink that they'd soon get bored with? They're just asking for the poor gal to relapse with the quickness and try for Round 2 at destroying a planet.

Even the movie's core message is conflicting: Steven's lesson was about moving on and stop conforming, all while the intention of the story was to invite the audience to keep themselves glued to the series and to expect more "Pink's lost treasures" to be uncovered. Sigh.
I guess I'm just done with _Steven Universe._ It delivered some of the most unique, bizarre and heartfelt moments in recent animation; and, while _Change Your Mind_ was an underwhelming result (probably so the few pending stakes and loose ends could be solved by the movie), it did however bring closure to the story. It was supposed to be Pink Diamond all along, and that was supposed to push the Diamonds towards redemption. It does makes sense, only that doing so for an animated, pro-diversity, anti-authoritarian, kid-oriented franchise was one hell of a job -- and it was unfortunately underdelivered.
Ought to say we were all expecting for a detailed guide to dethrone abusive authorities, and all we got instead was a golden star for watching the series. Ha!
At this point I don't really see the diamonds as truly redeemed. Reformed, yes, but only because they want to keep Steven around. Hell, they don't even love Steven nor Spinel for themselves, but because they're associated with Pink Diamond. That much is clear from the "but you were hers" line. It's a step up from thinking he actually is Pink, but it's still focusing on the Pink aspect of his life, and Spinel's when they later invite her to stay in the palace. Maybe the pebbles at least will like her for her.
Spinel really is the highlight of the movie. Aside from her redemption working so much better (since she actually felt remorse for what she tried to do) she was just a joy to watch bouncing across the screen. The redemption was inevitable, but I really looked forward to seeing how it would pan out.

Exactly! I feel like everyone just kinda points at antagonists of Steven Universe and says "Redeemed!" When really they're not. And it is partly the fandom's fault for calling them that, but either way it's annoying. There are so many villains that weren't redeemed immediately; Peridot took many episodes, Lapis took a lot as well, Bismuth took having to be bubbled again, and Jasper and the Diamonds aren't by definition redeemed yet, they're only on the road to being redeemed. Even LARS took a long time to actually become a nice person and he's not exactly a villain.
The way the Diamonds acted makes me wonder about season 6. They don't care about Steven. They don't care about actually improving Homeworld for gems. They don't care about organic life and "lower lifeforms". They only care about pleasing Steven so that he stays with them and can fill the hole Pink Diamond left. But now they have Spinel for that. So that begs the question: Will they turn "evil" again? They have no reason to still go along with Stevens vision afterall.

When you actually look at the reasoning behind her actions, they’re largely due to her childish impulses, which she rarely faced the repercussions for, so rarely had the opportunity to learn from them. The damage Pink caused was never intentional, she just didn’t think things through most of the time and yet she’s seen as the most evil character in the series for being irresponsible in a position of power she couldn’t truly comprehend.

The Steg fusion really made me feel uncomfortable. I mean.... It's a teenager fusing with his father.... and then I see Garnet... and then I'm all like "I have questions.... but I'm not sure I want the answers".
Also, he just being flirty with Pearl, it also made me uncomfortable. Pearl is supposed to be one of the mother figures for Steven, not a romantic interest. And Greg sees her as some sort of sadness-companion because they both lost Rose. Heck, in their redemption song "I love both of you", Pearl is dressing like a man instead of a woman, putting her on the same step as Greg.

SuxMenner but wasn’t Steven Universe always a musical series? What was the problem with the movie being one?
Spinel says “I just want to be a friend” when she questions why she’s attacking Steven. She wants someone else, and so it wouldn’t make sense for her character to say “I should learn to exist for me” like Pearl’s arch. And I think her going with arguably the worst option is to potentially set her up to be a villain again in the future, but in a different way as to not just have Movie 2.0. I think if they decide she’s a villain again, I think this time her goal should be attack HomeWorld or the diamonds, and be a way to show the other diamonds that they really haven’t changed, and are just pretending to for Steven. But idk if that’s what they are planning, it’s just speculation.
I also think the reason for this movie being one big rehash is because after 5 seasons, they want a single recap so people can get on board with the next seasons. We know S6 is happening, and a member of the crewniverse said that they’re all hopeful to get to season 9, where they feel like they can end it. I know plenty of people who already don’t want to get into a 5 season show because it’s too much, but this movie makes a great jumping on point for these people. It explains pretty much everything you need to know, shows off what is possible with this show, and is over all entertaining.
I’ve heard some people theorizing that the poison didn’t work because it was done too quickly. It’s like marinating. If you want that tofu to have flavour throughout, you gotta marinate over night. This injection job is like when you just pat some oil and spread garlic on that tofu and say it’s done. Sure the outside is effected, but that’s it. The injector only effected the surface, and the cracks were caused by the fighting and the reinjection of the injector to the surface (otherwise there would have been cracks on the hill while they were at little home world). If Spinel wasn’t so desperate for revenge, then she would have caused some pretty serious damage. Instead, she was hasty. So she didn’t cause much of an effect and now she has shitty tofu.
Shitty tofu is probably the best analogy for a near-apocalypse that I've ever heard.
But yeah, I feel like the series is going to play with the fact that that it takes time and a lot of effort for people to really change in season 6, especially given how the diamonds acted in the movie. I'm pretty sure that the episode "Change Your Mind" wasn't the diamonds changing their minds about being brutal dictators, but changing their minds about Steven being Pink and reacting more-or-less accordingly (by wanting to cling to him and basically doing whatever he asks since not listening to Pink ended horribly).
Also I feel like people kind of ignore the fact that the diamonds clearly already had problems that Steven was just smart enough to notice and bring to light. Blue prioritized her own feelings over everybody else, Yellow suppressed/ignored her own feelings, and White was obsessed with being perfect despite the fact that she's not. They essentially latched onto Steven at least partially because he was able to get them to actually confront their problems.
So yeah, Spinel going with the diamonds is going to be interesting.
I thought that the poison problem maybe had something to do with the Cluster, maybe they stopped the poison from spreading and even healped Steven heal Earth afterwards. It can be hearthwarming to think like this.

Rs2187 Id say it’s a bit too early to tell, perhaps she will be explained further as the Series progresses. Then again you could be right and she might just be a one-off character for just this movie alone and her existence will never be referenced ever again. Which is more likely but I like to look on the bright side.
I think we should all be patient and wait to see what happens with spinel (if anything happens with her)
I really hope she is. Honestly, her design surprised me, but in the end I wasn't let down. I loved how they represented abandonment in her, and her bouncy design made her a very terrifying villain since she could put up a great fight without a weapon. She could definitely be one of my favorite characters.

I completely love the point about PD being a scapegoat. With her being completely gone, where do we go...? It was a plot point about Steven having to fix his mothers actions, but now there's nothing left.
Also, the drill thing still makes sense.
The original point was that the poison slowly entered the earth to destroy all life, but Spinel's motive changed to wanting to just kill Steven, and so it's more efficient to have the poison surrounding him and those he loves.
We could've redeemed the diamonds and solved a good half of the shows problems in 3 swings of a scythe but na comebacks work fine
I don't think anybody being could get close enough to the diamonds to actually hit them. And based on how unprepared home world was for a rebellion oh, it's unlikely that gems would Rebelle. So rejuvenators would not be very common place.

I think so too, mostly because if a gem was defective it would always be defective, factory reseting wouldn't fix a bug that's build into it.

I imagine that in the past all rejuvenated Gems were forced back into their intended role in Homeworld's caste system and never got exposed to anything with an emotional tie to their old selves like what Steven did with Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl.

The reason people find it extremely sad that she was left alone for thousands of years on that planet when the other gems also experienced abandonment is because when the gems were abandoned, they had each other, but spinel had no one. She couldn't grow. She had no one to talk to or play with or even to fight. She was stuck in time, standing in the garden. Meanwhile Steven and the other gems were continuing to figure stuff out and support each other.
i think the reason spinel went with the diamonds is so later she could become friends with another "(extremely) wronged by diamonds" gem, known as Pink Pearl. its just a stegway
She went with the diamonds because she wants a fresh start. It’s like doing something horrible to a friend and you still hang out with them. It can be awkward and can remind Spinel of what she has done.

It could have be great if Rebecca wasn't so focused on redemptions, not everybody deserves one. She could have at least had the diamonds suffer some kind of punishment but nope

Like them initially trying to kill all the gems was swept under the rug. They never even apologized to the crystal gems, especially for acting the way they did with Garnet and poofing them at the ball
