- ~Rhapsodie pour Cor Anglais et Piano~
Here is a very rare piece; so rare that it has taken me, a Debussy fanatic, 15 years to finally track down and which is not anywhere to be found on UA-cam, so far as I can tell. It is a transcription of the "Rhapsodie pour Saxophone Alto et Piano," for a lesser known instrument, a Cor Anglais (oddly enough, neither English nor Horn, as its translation from the French indicate), which is closely related to the Oboe, the difference being that the Cor Anglais plays at a lower pitch, in the key of F, where the Oboe plays in the key of C; a perfect fifth lower than the Oboe, the Cor Anglais is, thus, about 1 & 1/2 times longer than an Oboe.
The piece is, as titled, a rhapsody for the woodwind instrument and piano, the Miriam Webster dictionary defining a rhapsody as, "a piece of music that is meant to express a lot of emotion and does not have a regular form."
The scarcity of the Saxophone, and then the Cor Anglais, as featured instruments at the center of compositions in no way tempered Debussy nor his ability to compose a mesmerizing piece of music that is hypnotic, at times loud and rambunctious, at times soft and sensual, always rich in texture and color.
The piece is here performed by Oboist (performing on the Cor Anglais) Nicholas Daniel and Pianist Julius Drake.
Enjoy!
An elderly neighbor of mine, when I was a little girl, she would play this at night, It would float through my window and I would drift off to peaceful sleep. Thank you so much- it's truly a gift to me!!! 😍😍😍
THis is a transcription of the rhapsody for saxophone and orchestra. Debussy did not write the orchestral score. It was orchestrated by a friend (I don't rememeber which one). So, we hear most probably the original pinao part as written by Debussy, and the alto saxophone has benn adapted to english horn, since the two instrumants share approximately the same range.
it was transcribed for orchestra by Roger-Ducasse:D
A hauntingly beautiful transcription of this piece. It occurs to me that my favorite passages in classical music feature the cor anglais: the beginning of the third movement in Vaughan Williams' fifth symphony, Ravel's piano concerto in G, the New World Symphony and others.
Very nice. I love Debussy. Listen for the Cor Anglais in Maurice Ravel's - Piano Concerto in G major part II. Adagio assai. It comes in toward the later half just before coda. One of the most beautiful uses of Cor Anglais ever written in my view.
Apologies fo my late response!
I know exactly where you mean in Ravel's Concerto. It is unmistakeable and beautiful!
Best to you,
Billy
I totally agree with you!!
Agree! that is a beautiful, beautiful piece
I love Debussy's music and the sound of the english horn! This transcription is perfect for me! Thank you!
my favourite piece of all time!
How excellent of Billy Stewart (my friend) to upload this music. Today I've been surveying ensemble music featuring the English horn and this is my fourth examined piece (previously Gordon Jacob's Rhapsody, Walter Piston's Fantasy and Emmanuel Chabrier's Lamento). I've always considered the oboe my favorite instrument and I can hear how similarly the English horn expresses a plaintive mood. Thank you for tracking this down, Billy!
Just within the last 15-30 years we now have at least two Concerti for English horn and orchestra: American Aaron Jay Kernis has composed "Colored Field" for English horn and Orchestra, and Latvian Peteris Vasks has also written a "Cor Anglais Concerto (1989). And I vaguely recall another American composer (?) was commissioned to write another similar work.
Love the part at 7:48 when the Cor Anglais melds into the piano!
Wonderful to hear, thank you. Beautiful pictures, too!
I forgot that I did hear this live many years ago in Buffalo, New York.
Very beautiful rendition! Superb. I imagine this is a Loree English horn.
Effectivement : une œuvre fort méconnue, rare, ... avec un très furtif clin d'œil à < Prélude à l'Après-midi d'un Faune > ! ... Merci beaucoup pour cette précieuse mise en ligne !
Nice. I think this is actually more effective on the english horn than the saxophone.
that's because the english horn is literally the best
great piece and great performance, thank you for sharing !
Thank you for posting this piece, Wonderful!
I have always loved the original saxophone version of this and am delighted to hear this transcription/arrangement for Ehorn.
Billy Stewart thanks, this is the tempo that I concieve like the most musical for this piece. Regards from Argentina
Wonderful*Thanks for sharing!
thank you so much for sharing this. i can never get enough of Debussy, and i love the oboe, oboe d'amore and cor anglais. in an entirely different vein, Wolf Ferrari's lyrical concertino also shows off the cor anglais beautifully. i just wish the repertoire were larger!
Aaron B you might be into my new oboe channel :) I cover etudes solos and oboe family issues
Brilliant piece, absolutely stunning!
Beautiful. Thank you.
Love this piece, thank you.
Wonderful piece. Thanks for sharing 💜🖤
This is really amazing and absolutely beautiful playing!! I can't believe i haven't heard this piece in the 50 years I've been a classical musician…!! And what a beautiful tone!! Can anyone here tell me what kind of Cor Anglais he is playing in this recording and how old it is? Thanks! And thank you Billy for posting this!!
As it is Nicholas Daniel who is playing, and he is on facebook, worth asking him
Thankyou from a fellow fanatic.
thanks for the upload!
Steward. your efforts were well worth it. I was not aware of the English Horn Rhapsodie. Now, could you point me in the right direction to find a recording of this. It is truly magic and mystifying. Thank you very much for sharing it with us.
Sorry, Stewart, slip of the old finger. This rhapsody begins somewhat similar to the premier rhapsody for clarinet, n'est pas?
I love Debussy 🎶🎶💓
Very good
Would anyone know where to get this version of this piece? I have the original which is not as in depth, and I have access to the saxophone version of this edition, so I might have to just do some transposing but I was hoping to buy it
Fantastique!
Thank you!
I prefer this version over the saxophone version but i am biased:) thanks for posting
Absolutely amazing! Congratulation! Where can I find the sheet music for this arrangement? :)
www.boosey.com/shop/prod/Debussy-Claude-Rhapsodie-cor-anglais-piano/2098339 I think this is the right one :)
Nice video description
Where can I find the sheet music, I REALLY want to play this for a student"s fundraiser concert!!!!
I now prefer this piece on English horn.
I Love you
Good!
Woah I would like to cover this on my oboe channel does anyone know what publisher sells the parts?
Oboe Files I am no classical musician, just a lover of the beauty, but my understanding for this piece is that any instrument can be played as the saxophone part is written in the original composition.
If that is true, it serves to remind me why my beloved Debussy always touches my heart, his music so different but alike in a way only my soul can interpret...
It seems that Trevco sells it!
www.boosey.com/shop/prod/Debussy-Claude-Rhapsodie-cor-anglais-piano/2098339 I’ve seen your channel before, I like your stuff! Here’s a link to what I believe is this piece, I’m fairly sure.
@@emilyhodgesoboe This version is not the same as what is played here -- the piano takes a lot of the cool EH runs. I have found the English horn part, bu can't find a piano part that goes with it...
Any idea who arranged this piece for cor anglais? I thought Debussy or his music publisher did, but I haven't been able to determine this.
Apologies for the late response... From what I have seen, Durand published the piece for Piano and English Horn. I'm not certain if they were Debussy's common publisher as classical is a love of mine but I don't play, can't read music and have taken no classical classes beyond my freshman college year required "Music Appreciation".
I wish I could play such marvelous works or read the pieces but, alas, my parents couldn't afford lessons for me and when I taught myself to play, it was by ear and on the Bass and Acoustic Guitar...
In the sheet music there is no arranger credited.
It looks to me like there was not much arrangement to speak of needed to adapt this for cor anglais. The piano score has the saxophone part written in concert pitch and looks identical to the piano score of Durand's edition of the original version for piano and saxophone. The cor anglais part simply looks like the original saxophone solo part transposed for an F instrument. It is in the original key, and I haven't checked every single note but it doesn't even look like any notes needed to be taken up an octave.
Are those piano cues at 2:13?
Se Monsieur mérite tout à fais d'être sur les billet de 20 franc même si sa musique ai un peu bizarre
??? This sounds exactly like the Rhapsody for Saxophone
It is a transcription of that piece:)
Is there no sheet music for this?
I apologize for not seeing your question! Apologies. I do not play classical instruments, unfortunately; I play guitar and bass...
I would assume that the music for the original composition, for alto sax, would be readily available but I don't know if that would be helpful in performing on the cor anglais.
I most certainly don't know anything about sheet music as I play completely by ear...
Best wishes on your search!
Billy

+Billy Stewart That's the orchestral CA part, not the solo part.

This is early Debussy which later he dismissed.
Billy, thank you for sharing it here. I am so glad to know this piece.
What a fantastic piece ! I used to play the oboe when I was a junior & high school student with wind orchestra.
I love the sound of Cor Anglais. Thank you!!!
You are most welcome, Chihiro! I, too, love the Woodwinds and the Cor Anglais is beautifully, though not enough, used in some of my favorite pieces. Dvorak's New World Symphony comes to mind with that marvelous solo!
