- Aaron Copland ~ 1900-1990
This is the complete Orchestral Suite, not the Ballet Suite. (Apologies for my poor labeling of the piece as I somehow managed to note 'Part 2' twice; this was done when I created the video before UA-cam allowed running times longer than ten minutes...)
Copland's "Billy the Kid" was commissioned by Lincoln Kirstein for his ballet company, Ballet Caravan, in 1938. The hope was to create an "American" ballet, to counteract the Russian tradition so popular in ballet for centuries.
The result, and I'll quote as I know the music but don't know ballet, was, "the first full-fledged American ballet in style and form as well as content," according to the choreographer of the ballet, Eugene Loring.
As I said, I don't know ballet, but I know classical music and this is a wonderful piece of music regardless of the reason for its composition.
This is the entire Suite for Orchestra which came directly from the ballet with very little change from the ballet score. The Suite was split in to 7 pieces by Copland and, though I don't know, and I apologize, where each begins or ends, I'm sure my educated guess as to the end of each piece and the beginning of the next is accurate, but I haven't noted my guesses in the video.
The sections of Copland's Suite are:
I Introduction: The Open Prairie
II Street in a Frontier Town
III Prairie Night
IV Gun Battle
V Celebration (after Billy's Capture)
VI Billy's Death
VII The Open Prairie Again
Performing is the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra led by Erich Kunzel.
Enjoy!
My first time seeing a ballet in New York..
The American Ballet Theater production of Aaron Coplañd 's 'BILLY THE KID'.. No less than awesome..!
A big thing for a guy from the West Coast.. 😊😊
This is me, my soul. I love Aaron Copeland's music. This work is hauntingly beautiful and timeless. Keep writing your beautiful music in Heaven, Mr. Copeland. I will listen to it when I get there.
Aaron Copland wrote music that described the American landscape in the same way John Steinbeck wrote about it. Or James Michener. And this is coming from me, a hardcore Dead Kennedys fan.
Copland is pure Americana!
Love his work.
European composers were writing stuff about people like William Tell, Robin Hood, or someone from Shakespeare's plays, so Copland chose an American legend to write about. This is not a ballet - it is a concert suite. I think Copland could have chosen a nice person instead of this outlaw, somebody like Daniel Boone or Davy Crocket, but I'm sure he had his reasons.
Always loved the Suite's plaintive themes the best. The broad landscapes between Taos and the Sierra Nevada readily come to mind -- I think of the great mystique of the classic American West -- with a little sadness, yes, knowing that the timeless transcendence of special places is easily forgotten in today's world.
A musician I have known since the early 80's died recently. John Geddes. Great man but a very understated man. He was a master of many instruments. A lovely man. And wil be missed by so many...
Photos are great accompaniment to Copland’s brilliant musical take on the Kid’s dramatic life. Long live Bill the Kid’s spirit and energy, and Copland’s music.
the progression at 8:50 makes me want to cry, this is by far one of my favorite pieces
A very powerful section of music
I always cry.
The Open Prairie and The Open Prairie Again is a colossus
this piece is so......so.......so COPLAND!!!! You hear lots of his harmonic and rhytmic expressions even going way back to his "Piano Variations"
Thank You for sharing Erich Kunzel's 'sonic vision' of Copland's BILLY THE KID..!
One thing I absolutely despise is when UA-cam inserts a commercial right in the middle of a concert. That is really, really tacky.
I agree.
It kills the whole vibe
This, along with Shostakovitch's 5th symphony in D minor where my favorite's as a pre-teen. I could see myself with two .45 peacemakers on a wild horse, making to the border just in time, the posse' hot on my heels.
Very excited to be hearing this at the Kennedy Center this weekend :D. Along with Dvorak's 9th!
My everyday inspiration, so profoundly American
Carlos Salazar Exactly my feelings too.Copland have known for forty years-He's amazing-'Quiet City' also superb.
Amazing Copland produced LIVING Music❤️🌹🌞👌💫 A ‘Musicman’ for sure❣️👌
We owe so much to Bela Bartok who took his recorders to the peasants of Hungary and Rumania to uncover a hidden music and use it in his magical compositions. Bernard Haitink in this Concerto for Orchestra brings together a larger than usual symphony orchestra and plays it like a small chamaber ensemble. The Shostakovich satire in the second to last movement is performed with grace, charm and love.
Awesome piece of music 🎶🎶
Beautiful in the opening credits of "He Got Game"
Eine Hymne an den wilden Westen ?? Brilliant Music and brilliant photos
We played this in our orchestra in Melbourne, Australia in 2010.
I really love 6:28 - 7:28; especially the part hat begins at 6:43! You can just hear the hooves!
The section of music 10:00 through 13:00 [ish] paints an open desert prairie as a lone rider makes his way across the landscape in my mind
The picture at 12:45 is hauntingly beautiful and really fits the landscape that the music creates.......

Billy the Kid was a killer.
He incorporated the evil of his time into his being.
That being said, this piece of music CAPTURES the wild west. The physical setting, the atmosphere, the attitudes and the people [more specifically the personage i.e. Billy] of the time.
Just astonishing.
Mr. Copland a truly talented individual who still blesses us all.
Astonishing is a good word ...Loved the whole feel of your comment ...Such deep appreciation
... Thank you. We are so blessed to have Copland ...

I apologize for the tardiness of this response. I just came back to give this piece a listen and was running through the comments and came across yours.
I always consider myself blessed coming across, however tenuous the meeting may be, a fellow human being who appreciates good music.
Peace to you, your family and all here!
The Open Prairie piece is very well done by Maestro Kunzel. He gives it the initial subtlety, simplicity, and restraint it needs, resisting the temptation to go big early. The most evocative version of The Open Prairie that I have heard. In contrast to the excessive bombast of the Bernstein version.
Cada época da nossa vida, nos apaixonamos por um compositor. Agora ando entusiasmado com Copland. Sua música parece que exala o perfume da América do Norte. Talvez seja correspondente a Villa Lobos no Brasil, na pátria americana.
+José Manoel Soares Nunes I love Copland and Villa Lobos.
Copeland is a true American treasure.
Esta música refleja parte de la cultura de nuestros orígenes. 👏👏👏👍
Sweet crashes. whoever is playing cymbals rules!
Fantastic piece of music, ballet of a cowboy. Should be the music for every western love it and it gets me every time i listen to it. Might have to buy it on vinyl, well worth it.
Thank you for changing the photos so often. I was able to listen with the images full-screen and not worry about damaging my laptop screen. I'm exercising, so it's hard for me to change the screen myself.
Copeland had the music power to turn anything, even the most base into beauty
those drums at the end...very moving and powerful
I love Billy the Kid
outstanding music, great pix! thnx.
The only piece of classical music my father would ever listen to...It reminded him of a western film, and that's the only reason. Fine. Got no problem with that...:)
Copland = style
About the photo of Billy the Kid: It has always been assumed that the outlaw was Left Handed as his pistol seems mounted on his left hip - there was even a movie entitled," The Left-Handed Gun ". However, not long ago, a gun expert viewing the famous photo revealed that the details of the rifle that is being held, seemingly by the right hand proved that the photo had been somehow reversed. Therefore the Left-Handed legend was suddenly disproven.
Maybe I’m ignorant as to how weapons are holstered, but could it not have been a cross-draw anyways?
Hooray for Billy the Kid!
Bought this on Vinyl today
Thanks for the pics. I am a fan of the old west and there are some here I haven't ever seen before. Good research!
Dang this is beautiful and kind of sad
OH YEAH, THIS IS MY JAM! lol

This song gives me strength at 18:30 and 2:55
When that theme of 18:30 is reiterated at 18:55 I always get choked up.

I could have done without the image of the guy being hanged.....but still a nice image compilation
+locomike1219 Don't like reality eh?
poopy headers
amazing music on the theme of a psychopathic killer.
Billy the Kid was a juvenile delinquent. He was only 19 or 20 when he was killed. Just a kid.
