takamura being naturally a heavy weight , having to lose like 20 kg to be in the middle junior weight , having to follow a drastic routine to be able to play in this category , you can't help but have respect for that

Takamura at the end of the video saying to Ippo like if going to gym is to just making friends then stop boxing coz in world of boxing, it's a war between 2 fighters. Setting aside the differences and frienship. Once in the ring, 2 fighters are in battle mode with no remorse or holding back. It's not like literally you can't have friends in gym but you need to learn to set aside everything once in the ring.
its also less about the boxing aspect and more about training. if you only work out to hang with friends then you aren't gonna reach your potential since your just their to hangout.

He said that in order to get to the top of the boxing world you need to stop being friendly to your opponent or being soft so if he wanted to be a world champion he must cross that line and prove himself to Takamura. Like you need to be prepared to kill them in the ring, like a Mike Tyson mentality. But Ippo is still scared to cross that line

While I love the fights in Ippo, I was always annoyed with how boring Ippo ended up being as a character. He really only ever gets stronger throughout the show physically, and never changes as a person. He's incredibly boring throughout the entire show. Like, where is his personal life, where is his family, his potential gf/wife, where is the changes to his personality as he gets older.... All we get is him getting physically strong and that's it.... I mean he's still afraid of everyone around him even though he has knocked the fuck out of people 30 times stronger than most humans around him.
You say that characters like Ippo are boring, I say that Dragon Ball and One Piece have a flat character that never changed and it's in the Top 3 manga. Even Naruto. Now say what you say but the main purpose of Ippo is discovering what it means to be strong, as Gokū purpose is to become stronger and fight stronger opponents, as Luffy wants to become King of Pirates and as Naruto wants to become an Hokage.

Because sure, as a "slice of life manga", Ippo can't have stakes that are going harder than others, but he sure lost friends (Naomichi) and had quite hard decisions to make like retirement. Takamura changed his mind on boxing when he said "You are not a monster and you will never cross this line if you never become a monster". Ippo still never crossed this line today, so his "character development" has to implie him crossing this line as he becomes a monster. Honnestly, what I think is that Sendo will loose his world title match against Ricardo and Ippo will come out of retirement and have one more goal : beeing Ricardo's nemesis. And well Ippo and Kumi relationship is still desastrous as Ippo never makes a move but he tried to kiss her before beeing interrupted by Mashiba so we are close to it about that ! Also, out of topic but if you want to watch an anime about boxing with more of character development and such a sad story, I highly recommend you Ashita no Joe.
