Hi everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Saris SuperClamp EX. This is gonna be a platform style bike rack that can hold up to two bikes and it's gonna hold them by the tires using our wheel hooks. We've got one on either side making for zero frame contact with our bikes. This one's gonna work with a really wide range of bikes too because of its unique design.
Let's check it out. So right away no frame contact is gonna mean a couple of things. Any sort of alternative frames that we have are gonna work just fine because we're not relying on that top tube for any sort of hook. The other thing is carbon frame bikes. That fragile frame shouldn't have anything touching it when we're going down the road.
So on here it's gonna be just fine with it being held by the tires. Now the reason this works with so many bikes is because of how the hooks attach. Typically with a wheel mounted bike rack you need to have that hook right up as close to the forks as it can get to hold it in place. With the dual hooks here, they can be pretty much anywhere on the tire so long as they're making good contact because we also have straps down at the bottom. Will hold the bike down into the cradles and the cradles and the straps are ready to go for tires up to four and a half inches wide.
There is a fat bike tire kits sold separately that you can use to use tires that are wider than that. The other thing of note is the 60 pound weight capacity per bike. So any of your e-bikes, as long as they're under that 60 pound limit are gonna be just fine on here. Like many other platform racks this does have the ability to tilt away with the bikes loaded, just come down to the very bottom where we've got our handle. It's labeled pull so it's easy to find.
So just give that a pull and lower the rack down. Now when you're tilting it down, just watch out for the handle bars because it does tilt down quite a bit and probably hold on by the arm or the hook here rather than putting all that weight and pressure on your bike. But with this we can gain access to the back of our vehicle. Now obviously every vehicle's gonna be a little bit different in terms of the fit, but the super clamps one of those ones where I've always found that it has good clearance on vehicles and we haven't really run into many issues where the tailgate doesn't clear. This allows us to get stuff out of the back if we need to maybe change our shoes before or after our ride and we don't have to unload our bikes to do that. You can lift the bike rack back up. That hand will automatically latch back in so it's ready to go and hit the road. As far as the overall stability of it goes while it's driving, it's definitely not my favorite. This one has a bit of shake and play at the pivot point where that bike rack tilts and folds. So with bikes loaded up there's a bit more side to side movement than I'd maybe want and especially compared to some other racks out there. The front to back also has a bit of wiggle room. Something I did notice though is that comparing this to the SuperClamp HD the version that's meant to use on motor homes that one always felt a bit more secure to me. So if you want to go to go with that option and have that extra motor home approval rating you can and it'll be a little bit more stable. If you've already got this one, you can swap out the shank for that two inch one that uses the motor home rating. So you can make this one motor home approved and make it a bit more stable. Here on our test score we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action which simulates turning corners or invasive maneuvers. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or a pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Now lastly, we're going over some full speed bumps and we can see here the up and down action and this will just be like driving in and out of a parking lot, garage or driveway. So we can see here how the bike rack moves with our truck. There are integrated cable locks that lock right down here at the bottom. There's one for each bike and they are a bit short. It's nice that the lock is really easy to get to and that it's all integrated into the rack. But these ones they we're pretty much only long enough to fit to the frames of our bikes and barely reach the locking point. So if you wanted to run them through say your front tire and your frame, I don't think you'll have enough

That wobble is well within Saris tolerance. According to Saris support, who I've contacted with videos of my own rack. Bike rack. 😊

Although it might be within tolerance, we aim to be honest about the products we sell.

What are some the other bike racks mentioned with less wobble (other than HD version)? Referencing comment made at 2:40

@@JoeyP_07he never stated the inno had less wobble. He simply offered it as an alternative-likely based on features and price point.
