Saris Freedom SuperClamp 2-bike hitch rack - Is it that good?

  • There are lots of people that claim the Saris Superclamp is the best bike rack on the market. Is it that good?
    I've had a month long ordeal trying to get a refund for a bike rack I purchased through the Sears Marketplace. I have been using a Harbor Freight bike rack until the refund was complete. Though I had ordered a Curt bike rack, but always wanted the Saris Superclamp. The problem is the pricing of the Saris rack made me hesitant. But that non-frame contact design really had my attention.
    They say good things come to those who wait....I guess that's true, because I decided I was going to make the plunge and order a Saris instead of worrying with a different rack design. I'm glad I did!
    It really is as good as others claim! It is fair to point out that I purchased the standard Superclamp. There is an 'EX' version that has a tilt feature, so there is an even better version available. It costs an additional $100+ dollars, so that's a factor. There is also a 4-bike version of this and the EX.
    The only downsides to the rack are the questionable packaging and the fact that it only includes one key. Trivial concerns considering all the great features the bike rack offers.

    I really like your videos showing low cost bike videos. Too often, the bikes many places review are 15k carbon road bikes or 10k downhill bikes.

    Great video. Today I purchased the one to handle 2 electric bikes. The rack tilts but that’s for you to open a SUV hatch or a truck tailgate. Lastly, when the bikes are removed it tilts a little bit forward to fold it up in a sense. I love it and it only ways about 35 lbs.

    Nice video. I recently purchased the Superclamp EX for my two Trek DS3's Works great. Very secure. I was starting to get some frame damage from my previous rack and the bikes hung at an odd angle. I use this with my Ford Ranger trailer receiver.

    I want to like this rack! Purchased using amazon points in February... Installed, went on 800 mile trip. upon returning I noticed overly excessive movement of bike rack. Upon further inspection, the hitch base plate was suffering from metal fatigue. I documented the issue and requested relief from Saris warranty department. I was told the bike rack issue was from user error and they would not warranty the product. Saris Warranty sucks.

    I missed this video a few years ago. I've been shopping for new rack and I love the design of the Superclamp EX2 but I hate the wiggle of the tilt knuckle. I discovered that there was a not tilting version on this video. I would much rather have the non tilting version because it's much more stable. Thanx for the review.

    Finally. a great bike rack. racks arent something you want to cheap out on. you can damage your bike and car if the rack breaks. you should have gone with the sikkta 2 rack from swagman though, its what I have and it supports road bikes, fatbikes and massive dh bikes with dual crowns

    Remember your the only one on the entire web doing a review of the xr pro, and good or bad be thorough. This bike has evaded reviews for years and was the scourge of LBS bike owners for years because of its price and value. There are many people anticipating this review because it really brings up the question why would you pay more for less if this bike is that good. Your speaking voice is professional caliber for these reviews as well as being concise and reminds me of journalism majors with its tonality.

    A week later? What did they deliver it by horse? That’s pretty slow considering it was missing parts. It would have been quicker to just exchange it through amazon. If it’s sold by amazon they will send one of the way before even receiving your old one so about two-three day turnaround.

    Hey Kev, would you recommend this super clamp rack (or the ex version) for a cruiser style bike with fenders? My wife's bike has front and rear fenders and I don't know if the clamps will damage these fenders if we go with this design of rack.

    I bought the same rack a few months back myself when I got back into biking after about a 8 year break after seeing Seth's review. It's been great. Was a little upset I had to buy the fat bike trays for my plus bike though.
    Mine came with 4 wheel straps though, so you were missing more than just the bolt from yours just FYI.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  6 років тому

      Ah, thanks for letting me know. Did you also get two keys?

    • @Truth_Spoken
      @Truth_Spoken 6 років тому

      Nope just 1, which surprised me as well. I put it on the key ring of the vehicle I use the rack on so that I hopefully do not loose it. I just looked at the manual and it was only supposed to come with 2 straps so I guess I got a bonus. I just noticed on their website that the rack is no longer available so I am thinking an updated version is coming out. Hopefully one that doesn't require the extra wheel trays for some bikes. Come to think of it, maybe that's where my extra wheel straps came from haha.

    Kevcentral, I’ll be honest and I wasn’t expecting to stumble upon this video while looking for reviews in various bike racks. Nothing wrong with it but since I have been following your channel you do a lot of budget bikes and builds on a budget, which are all together great. I’m somewhat surprised that after all the Walmart bikes you’ve reviewed/done builds on you looked right past them when you needed a bike rack after you got what seemed to have been the ‘ol bait and switch with the rack you ordered. I was looking for a decent platform type bike rack that was reasonably priced and happen to find the Hyper Tough Platform Bike Rack at my local Walmart with a normal price of $67. There wasn’t much information about it but after looking at it and several on Amazon the Hyper Tough seemed to be practically identical to others on Amazon with slight variations. I decided to take a gamble and pick up the Hyper Tough to give it a try and much to my surprise it’s actually decently put together and is sturdy with no noticeable rattles or excessive wobbling with my Polygon Siskiu D7 29er on it. You may consider doing a review yourself on this inexpensive rack as I think it would align with what your channel goes for and I’m sure a large portion of your audience.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks. Simple reason: I wanted a rack that gripped by the tires with no frame contact. 2+years ago there were less options available that accomplish this. Even today I haven’t seen this from a rack sold by Walmart.

    I've got fenders on my bikes, the clamps would have to go on my fenders, will it still work without damage?. Also, my ebikes are quite heavy at 60lbs each (with batteries removed), will that work?

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  6 років тому

      The rack will hold bikes up to 60lbs each per the Saris website. As far as fenders - I never thought about that. Depending on the fender length (i've seen some that were dirt bike looking long) it may still work, but only if you could press the superclamp against the tire. Properly applied the clamps sit at an angle, so a short fender wouldn't be in the way. It would destroy a fender if you tried to press the clamp directly down onto the fender itself.

    • @tongmovies
      @tongmovies 6 років тому

      I've got "road bike/cruiser" bikes. For the rear tires, the fenders go to 90 degree angle (9 oclock if you will), and the front maybe 45 to 60 degree (10 oclock). So there's no way to avoid clamping on the fender. Oh well. Maybe I'll just have to remove the fenders...

    Hey, nice review. Is there any version of this for Europeans, which doesn't require a hitch receiver? Never even seen those receivers here, just towbars with ball hitches where bike racks clamp on top. Unfortunately I only seem to find racks here that anchor the bike frame, never just the wheels. Don't want to damage my carbon mtb. Thanks for any and all help.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  6 років тому +1

      +phaelox i didn’t know the hitch receiver wasn’t a universal standard. Check out the Saris Thelma towball mounted bike rack. It’s a slightly different design, but also mounts the bike by the wheels.

    • @phaelox
      @phaelox 6 років тому

      KevCentral from what I gather it's a USA or N.-America specific standard. First time I saw one anyway, was on UA-cam.
      Thanks for the tip about the Thelma! Saris actually makes a euro version I saw, with the required number plate holder and rear lights. On the expensive side though! Don't understand why wheel-clamping bike carriers are so much more common in USA than here, but I've been reading more and seems a lot of people use frame clamps on carbon bikes, too. Apparently if you clamp verrrry moderately it's okay, especially with extra padding. And even better to clamp on the seat post which can withstand more pressure, as it is after all designed to be clamped by the seat tube.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  6 років тому

      +Jim Allocco not as close as they appear. Plus they don’t move once clamped, so there’s worry of any contact from bike-bike. That’s not to say there isn’t some combination of bike designs that would touch in some way, but that would by far be an exception and not the norm. I’ve had countless different style bikes on the rack and have never had any that were close enough to contact.
