    I am a native indonesian but I was born in palmerston north, so I have a plan to move and immigrate there using my permanent resident status. I also plan to do my master's degree in either massey or victoria.
    My only concern is regarding the living cost and high accomodation fees. I can afford those but It'll be tough. Any tips for handling this concern? or maybe cheaper housing alternatives?

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 місяці тому +2

      Nice! I lived in Palmerston North from 1996-2003 and went to Whakarongo School! I’ve made a few videos in the past comparing living prices between New Zealand and other countries which could be helpful (look for “Cost of Living” videos on my channel!). Living in smaller centres or away from the city is always cheaper. To save on living costs, choosing cheaper options like Pak N Save for groceries, or Gull for fuel, should help money go further. NZ’s not a cheap place to live, but I’ve travelled a fair bit and prefer it over many other spots like the US! Hope this helps!

      Hey! My knowledge of most universities is limited as I studied mainly in Singapore. During High School I did a course at Waikato, it has a really nice campus. I also spent a semester at Auckland University, campus is less good but the brand name is better known abroad. Hope this helps

    Amazing video. When it comes to cost of living (rent, groceries, entertainment), how would you say NZ fares?

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  Місяць тому

      It's certainly on the higher end - when I went to the US and Dubai however, NZ definitely comes in cheaper. Numbeo can be a great resource (most of the time!) for comparing! www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/

    Why houses are built out of wood rather than concrete ?

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  Місяць тому +2

      Up until 200 years ago, New Zealand was covered in vast construction hardwoods like Kauri, and even today has a massive logging sector. Wood also holds up better during earthquakes, it insulates better, and probably a few other reasons I'm not sure of!

    • @vKozus
      @vKozus 3 дні тому +1

      @@BrentColemanwood breathes, is lighter, cheaper and faster to build. Whole scandinavia is built with wood and with proper insulation houses like these can be pretty warm in the harsh winters and quite cool in summers. And if you wish to you can build one yourself in solo 😊

    what about the car enthusiast culture? are they strict on those? do you see a ton of modified cars?

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 місяці тому +2

      There’s restrictions on the exhaust noise and spoiler size, but aside from that it’s pretty open I’d think. Strong Japanese presence here, the cars I grew up with as our first cars included Silvia, MR2, GTO, Celica, Corollas, MX-5, etc. now they’re worth a mint. Lots of old Skylines, RX-7s, Imprezas, Supra, Evos, Legacys around that are heavily modified, and strong community around them. Hope that helps!

      It's offset by not having a capital gains tax, so investors do better here. Probably why Peter Thiel, James Cameron, and Julian Robertson are living here!

    To be honest New Zealand needs more people from the Uk or the continent. There has been a tremendous amount of immigration from lower wage nations like India, China and the Philippines not to mention Malaysia and latin America. This had an overwhelmingly negative effect on wage growth , housing affordability, low productivity strain on infrastructure, hospitals and schooling. NZ has also slipped down corruption index as migrants from the developing world fare poorly in attitudes to everyday corruption and exploitation of employees. Another big negative is migrants from poorer parts of the world will send money home in the form of untaxed remittances rather than spend earnings in the host country

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  26 днів тому +2

      I think NZ needs more people with skills, irrespective of where they’re from. Many of those issues would arise irrespective of where someone is migrating from. The almighty Google sends hundreds of millions back to Ireland every year, untaxed, as they’re classified as “license fees” to their IP jurisdiction.

    "...popping up like mushrooms."
    Normally I'd say popping up like weeds but since this is NZ with the notoriously damp and mouldy homes..yes, I guess mushrooms are appropriate.

    the main thing you need to know is after 5 years you can get permanent residency and move to Australia hassle free

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  19 днів тому

      You can't move to Australia on PR. You need the passport, which comes 5 years after gaining NZ residency.

  • @PhilWilliam-hx6xh
    @PhilWilliam-hx6xh 23 дні тому

    Make sure to tell people there are zero jobs and opportunities here for NZ permanent residents who’ve come from overseas. Please don’t bother coming here if you’re over 40 as you are unemployable unless you’re a brain surgeon. Xenophobia, nepotism, ageism is off the charts here. It’s not how skilled you are it’s who you know which would explain why “management” in this country is beyond the worst I’ve see anywhere in the world and YES I am leaving.

    3:50 The minimum wage here in New York is $15 an hour (NYC $16/hr.) but no one wants to make a career out of a minimum wage job because there are so many opportunities available for upward mobility. Since there are so many businesses and so much competition, the consumer is the king hence good customer service skills are crucial in the restaurant business!… The more you impress your customers, the more tips you earn!… Makes perfect sense!

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  Рік тому +4

      Thanks for watching! For many kiwis the concept of tipping isn't popular as they generally like prices to be clear and explicit upfront, without having to calculate tips and sales taxes. For shared tables it makes the split easier too. Completely see where you're coming from, it's just not the standard practice here :)

      @@BrentColemanDon’t you want to know how much of your hard earned money the government is stealing from you and what states or regions have lower taxes so that you can move there?… I sure do and unfortunately for me, the state I live in is absolutely highway robbery as far as taxes are concerned!… New Zealand is a centralized collectivist monarchy where pretty much everything is decided by the central government & people dont seem to question that authority and that will never work in the USA!

      Here good service is given for free, and its genuine. Kiwis are allergic to fake flattery & can spot it in 2 seconds flat. Knowing exactly how much youre taking home at the end of the day, allows you to plan accordingly. Its just common sense.

Also one of the most free countries , a well regarded single police force who are not normally armed but do have ready access to weapons , public access to beaches , no licence needed to fish the Ocean tho catch limits apply .
