I’m so glad you noted that the obsession with the objective on the board isn’t useful. My admin, like many, require objectives for every class each day on the board. It’s pointless.
@@CJReynolds Luckily we are not, but I teach multiple classes and I need a daily objective for each class. I would cry if I needed to add the state standard as I teach a subject that doesn’t have dedicated standards and so I’m usually borrowing standards from social sfudies, ELA, etc. I have a single white board, which the projector goes to, so I can never write anything else on the board. I just went to a training where we were told the learning objective needs to be on the board so the kids know what they are learning. My kids never read the learning objective. Ever.
We have to write the objective as well, so I just write it in student-friendly terms. I teach a career education elective, so no one is running around checking my standards and objectives anyway.
Thanks for posting this video because it reminds me of the old school vibe of you talking from your old classroom. You're still the best online resource for teachers from all experience levels. I cant wait to see the video on transitions. I teach HS social studies and my hardest 2 minutes of class is getting students to shift their focus from our bell ringer to the vocabulary for the unit. This is especially difficult since this is my first year at a school with 55 min classes. I was spoiled for 2 years with 100 min classes and now I never feel like I have enough time to cover our lessons.
My daily agenda is always written on the board, but I also put a slide on my Promethean that repeats the agenda along with a timer and any special announcements for the day. I also have a meme because we all need to laugh. I’ve set up a First Five routine for the beginning of class so that we can begin on time and set the tone for that day.
@CJReynolds I am a Consulting Teacher (CT), one of 6 in my county. CTs are regular teachers that receive a district invitation to step out of their classroom for 3-4 years to work exclusively with new teachers. New teachers who do not have a degree in education. We help them lesson plan, teach in their rooms, explain classroom management- modeling just about everything. We share your content with them and encourage them to explore your videos. Thank you so much for having real life content. You are great! 😄
I have been obsessively watching your videos for about a week now and ordered your book yesterday. I'm in my 2nd year back in the classroom after being home with my kids for about 15 years and it's been a little crazy! I'm in Philly too, so i was even more excited to learn you have been teaching here. I'm getting so much out of your videos. Sometimes i worry I'll never get to this level of consistency as i have adhd myself and i have to really be on myself to stay on track. Gotta keep trying though! Day 2 tomorrow, woo!
Hi Stef! Thanks for the kind words. You’ll get there. No one starts there. If you ever need any help please hop onto our live feed on Sundays at 4pm on UA-cam. I’d be happy to answer any questions for you. ✌🏽
"Leaders are repeaters," oh is this oh so true! But yes, building this rhythm is so vital. Cycle 1 ended today and I have had students admit it took the whole cycle to get with my rhythm. PS - Cool watch!
I went to school in the 60's & 70's, so I really grew up old school. Until I retired from teaching recently, your vids were always good technique reminders. Many thanks! PS: Looks like you misspelled #3, imagery.😉
Oh my god this was so helpful, you’re a lifesaver. Last time I commented on your vids I was out teaching overseas in Korea - now I’m back in the US and running an afterschool art program! Turns out I love teaching and decided to stick with it, but I struggle a lot with classroom management and fatigue. The part where you said you try to avoid answering tons of questions by having the basics written out on the board is SO insanely helpful, idk why I didn’t think of that! I can’t wait to put this into practice, thank you!
Thank you for creating a video based upon one of my comments. I do, however, apologize to you and the misses for that comment it the way it came out. Awesome content.
I love you, Reynolds. I am an Esl Teacher in Bucharest Romania taking and applying your advice and inspiration in public sec schools. Keep your energy up, and maybe lifestyle advice is useful too for how to keep being energetic all year round...
I'm a new teacher in West Philly and discovered your videos on Monday. Your tips and insights have been sooo helpful for my day 1, i love how thorough and authentic your teaching style and vids are. feeling inspired to start with journal entries in health class. Thanks so much!! here we go Day 2 🥳
I have a handout bin at the door for students to get and turn in each day so they are responsible for picking them up eachday so they are responsible for it. It also takes away from me having to do it.
Great tips! I teach high school art on block schedule and we usually give a 5 minute break in the middle. I started putting at the top of my posted agenda the period start & stop time, the approximate break time, and the time students may start cleaning up. It has reduced a lot of annoying questions. I also sometimes post when lunch is. :P
Thank so much. I actually did write a book on teaching. It depends on the unit and the length of the week. Mostly we start with journals and vocab reviews each day. I find the consistency helps the students.
I like using the timer to create a sense of urgency and purpose in the classroom.

Are you all required to write out the entire state standard?
We used to be required to write out the state standard, objective, and something else that I can't remember.

Good teacher, give respect get respect, that's one of my big ones too
I love how you break down the reasoning, intention the corresponding actions.
It was such a game changer for my students, that I just made it a regular thing ☺️
I have written the objectives on a 12x18 sheet of construction paper, and I use magnets to indicate which objective we’re learning about each day.

I will try! 😂 What do you teach ?

Best of luck Tessa, the fact you're online looking for ways to be the best teacher you can be already tells me you're going to kill it!
Your videos are so helpful for my husband and me as long-term substitute teachers!
What have I gotten in trouble for every year for the last 20 years in Texas & New Mexico? NOT WRITING OUT STANDARDS on my board. LOL
Me too! 😂
It's like you have been in my classroom!

This is aggregate idea too. I’ve had friends do this and they’ve had great success. Do you do this every day?

Reynolds is the man.
Excellent tips.
I talked to my principal about you coming to our school and he told me to get your contact information.
I like the idea of shaking hands but in this day and age should we - germ spread wise?
Do you have a list of the journal prompts you use?
I just did Sub training . We were tols never, under zero circumstances Touch a student....no patting on the back or any contact...
Just ran across this video; great ideas! What is the focus of your journal entry’s? Thanks!!!
