8:14 they weren't canisters of oxygen, they were *oxygen generators* which are cylinders containing chemicals that can be triggered a bit like a grenade (but without exploding) to produce oxygen in a reaction, as well as a lot of heat. They usually sit above passengers in/behind a heat resistant cradle, but when packed in that cargo hold they were surrounded by flammable materials. They got hot after being triggered by a bump, and proceeded to ignite the aircraft tires in the cargo bay after lighting the packaging around them (the oxygen itself didn't ignite since that's not really how it works), and then the fire couldn't be stopped or contained in the airtight cargo hold where usually it would burn itself out, because the oxygen generators were all burning and releasing more and more oxygen. The "bump" or overpressure event they talked about was triggered by this fire and continual release of gasses. Part of the reason they were mistakenly loaded was that they were labeled as empty and as oxygen canisters, when the problem was that they were actually oxygen generators and NOT empty, but past their expiration date (which has a generous margin for safety reasons, they very much still worked) so it's incredibly frustrating to see this continually misreported even decades later (I get that the audio here is probably from a decade ago though).
It needs to be said that while accurate, this is older info, and newer boxes record typically over 300 channels. It has never been a safer time to fly than now.
My husbands father was on flight 427 . September 8th 1994. It was just outside Pittsburg and about to land. While the video may be outdated the accident should have never happened. It's so sad.
I’m sorry for both your loss. It’s worth noting though that despite the archaic FDR, the NTSB still determined the cause, so it obviously did record enough for them to determine what happened. Also, they determined the rudder hard-over issue in the 737 was caused by debris in the hydraulic system for the rudder, which would not have been reported via telemetry data or a more advanced FDR it’s a maintenance issue on the part of the operating airline.
You know I always hear, when the public wants to get out of a war, people talking about how it will cost local jobs and this is a strategic move by the military industrial complex to spread the necessary jobs throughout the country. Why is it, then, that the same argument can't be better made for absolutely requiring all aircraft to have the lasted in flight data recorders? Yes, it is going to cost money as it does to manufacture all the weapons of war, but instead of creating jobs to make something to kill people somewhere else, this would be creating jobs to save people's lives. Some people would say that this would make it cost more to fly and this is likely the case. However, throughout my lifetime, the price of air travel just in monetary terms has always gone up. At this point, in the US, you either have to have a passport to get on a plane or this real ID. Now my name hasn't changed throughout my entire lifetime, but I was somehow unable to prove my identity to the DMV, despite bringing my birth certificate, my social security card, my medicaid card, my passport (although it had expired at the point), my previous driver's license, and some stuff I got in the mail from my health insurance company. That wasn't enough for them though. However, if I had had a bill, I would have been fine showing nothing more than my old license and my birth certificate. I even happened to have gone there with my mom because she needed to renew her license too and they gave her the real ID because she did have bills mailed to her. Why didn't have any such bills? Well, it's because I would have otherwise been homeless if my mom hadn't allowed me to move back in after college, despite having the top grades in my class in science. We need to face the fact that the powers that be want to reserve air travel for themselves and society is constantly looking for ways in which the poor can be distinguished from the rich even when this is completely not based on merit even if it ever was. In any case, the way to open air travel to more people certainly isn't to skimp on safety or on the wages of those who do the actual work and, if they did that, I'd be content to simply not be able to afford air travel.
Whomever wrote and directed this slanted video should take a step back to reality rather than vilifying everyone. These accidents were decades ago, the planes were decades old then, so the argument about the boxes only recording a few parameters is ridiculous, you’re talking about boxes that were conceived, constructed and installed 40-60 years ago! Also, this whole idea of being proactive in preventing these accidents makes no sense. The industry is overall incredibly safe with multiple redundancy’s in most cases. Nearly all accidents that occur these days come down to some degree of pilot error or weather. When there is a fault, it’s dealt with, but without a crystal ball, you can’t be any more proactive than the industry already is and if you did have one, 9 times out of 10, the solution would be to give the pilot the day off or cancel the flight, not to make a change to the plane. For example, Nobody at Airbus or Boeing could foresee contractors and ground crew mislabeling and mis-packaging oxygen generators, nor is there really much they could have done about it if they did.
I wonder if the predictions for 2015(?) of "one crash per week" will come true.... Oh, wait, while very entertaining, the videos here are as outdated as whicker chairs on planes.

Nowadays a flight data recorder has to record at least 88 parameters by rule. Often it's close to 10 times of that.
Amazing!!!
Just about to watch 😀

why they don't put video of the cockpit in the black box?
Video needs a LOT of memory, and the combination of the other two boxes already gives enough of a picture to make the video system unnecessary
@@thegreyghost5846 OK thanks. But now, memory is too cheap...probably someday in next future they will do it.
The black box flight recorder was invented in Australia in the 1950s.
WHAT"S IN THE F***ING BOX ?!?!
awe I thought you would pause the video in white for 28 seconds

You’re very disturbed.

I got 17 minutes in and quit - seems to be quite dated material.
Hello,
Mr. On The Move!
Your video and music for the opening seem like you enjoy and become delighted providing these horrible videos!
What a shame,
and your need to be rude was caused by.......???

What does "and your need to be rude was caused by.......??? mean?
It's the equinox intro, so what LOL.
It's good to know the personality of the channel owner, the UA-camr.
I am delighted and joyed when i have something horrible to listen to! 🤷♀️
