Help! I followed this series of video of make my own with bamboo and I’m encountering few issues: - my F flute is overblown too easily when all holes are open, as soon as I close one hole it’s OK and I need to blow hard to over blow it - my A flute does not overflow at all unless I blow super strong - my F flute (same as above) seems to have some vibrations on the sound hole (paper like sound) on lower notes - it’s my first time playing a Native American flute and it feels like I need to blow very gently, like just breathing out rather than blowing out. It makes me run out of oxygen as I don’t recycle air fast enough. Is that normal or is my air/sound/track holes too small?
Hi John. The truth is you can never really tell. I have has cane flutes for over 20 years which have and have not cracked. My oldest cane flute is in great shape.
Thanks again Charlie, for a nice video. I was damaging the ends of my bamboo. I get my bamboo length at a hardware store, they sell Tiki torches. I just cut the end off and it works fine.
Great vid. Thanks. I found a great tool for enlarging finger holes. In any hotroders tool box you will find a "tapered reamer" made for enlarging holes in sheet metal. They work better on bamboo. If you bought three of those and shortened two of them you would be able to ream holes from 1/6 to 1/2" nice and clean and fast. Great for sneaking up on a note. tnx agn Jack
Do you sand down the outside of the bamboo flute? I'm trying to make one from a tiki torch bamboo and it seems waxy and has dark spots here and there on the stock. One if them have a slight green look. What should I do?
Give it time and green will go away. If you sand the outside of bamboo you open up all of its pores and will need to seal it again with something. Likewise it's important to seal the inside of it was something as well.

Hi there! I made a flute from saw grass, following all the measurements in the video. I left and one extra inch to the length to set up an A flat, but the sound that finally released in all enclosed holes is A#. Futhermore, although my holes are still 4.5 mm in diameter (not final ~6.3 mm) - they also plays sharper notes! What do you recommend to do?
I used to sell river cane flutes. If you're interested in my flutes please contact me through the website mentioned at the end of this video and in the description.
Hi Charlie! I have seen your 3 videos of this serie. Now that I have the bamboo iam ready to make the flute. I use cm here, I appreciate if you can tell me the measurements of the fingering in cm 😊👍. Thanks for sharing.
Hey my friend, that depends on the diameter of the bamboo as we discussed before. In addition to this video, three or four of my other bamboo flute videos give measurements. If you can't find them, let me know.
@@BlueBearFlutes I have looked for your videos but I can’t unfortunately find them. My 2 bamboo has at the small end 1.023 and 0.748 inch and the other one 1.299 and 0.905 inch. I think they are quite wide bamboo’s than normal.
Thanks so much for this... Went ahead and made myself one. It plays in F (I found out after :) ) The only thing about it is that it tends to jump to higher notes (The top octave) too easily. Any way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Check the block to make sure it is sitting completely flat on the track area. Hold it up and look to see if there is any light coming through. Also, be sure the edge of the block lines up with the back edge of the sound hole. If this doesn't seem to help, please message me on my facebook page or my website so I can look at it.

Naturally cured is the best, but if you can't get any dried then you can dry it yourself. Dry is best because there is not shrivel or shrinkage. Green flutes will shrink and will not play after a short time.

I like your tip about scoring while cutting with the hacksaw. I've cut PVC with a hacksaw and I can never seem to get the end straight.
when cutting bamboo a little bit of painters tape wrapped around the cut area goes a long way to preventing splinters. It keeps the outer layer of the bamboo stuck as one, so even if a small splinter starts it can't go anywhere. you can also wrap the bamboo in string (tightly) right before the cut area
Sounds like a good idea... although it probably works better for bamboo than river cane. Scoring it like pvc definitely does best.
