"I hope Ripley and Hicks expose the Company, take it down, get married, adopt Newt and live happily ever after." Never watch the other sequels and keep believing that.
This is the ending I choose. I decided that because they haven't made a great Alien movie since 1986 so I went with my own fan-fiction ending to the franchise.
Hudson: 17 days?! We’re not going to last 17 hrs! Ripley: This little girl survived longer than that with no weapons and no training. Hudson: Hell, why don’t you put her in charge?! That line got the biggest laugh when I saw it in theatres. We were all Hudson internally, and that line broke the tension. RIP Bill Paxton.
Carrie Henn (Newt), had so much fun sliding down that vent that she kept blowing the scene so she could redo the take. James Cameron promised that if she nailed the scene, she could use the vent slide all she wanted. She nailed it in the next take and Cameron let her use it for the rest of the day.
I know Carrie says that's what happened - but I don't believe she "blew" takes just to use the slide. It's very probably true that she got to mess around on the slide after filming finished.
Just in case anyone is interested, Sigourney Weaver, in addition to kicking ass in many a film, is actually a very gracious lady in real life. I once met her with a friend while she was walking back from the "set" of the movie she was currently working on (The movie was "Copy Cat"). She was surrounded by two very large body guards. Despite the fact that it was late at night, and she was obviously exhausted, she smiled at us and and talked with us for about 10 minutes, just shooting the breeze, and even a joke or two. She then happily autographed our "still in box" Aliens action figures. As she was signing, she joking said "I hate these things. I don't earn a penny from them because the likeness is always different enough so it doesn't resemble me, and I have no rights to Ripley the character." But she wasn't complaining of bitter. On the contrary, she was just letting us know how things work in Hollywood. In any case, after talking with us a bit more, she had to get going, so we thanked her for talking to us/autographing our items and that was it. The fact she took the time to not only just autograph something but to also shoot the breeze with us with no pretensions speaks very highly of her.
See so many of us idolize these people that when we meet them we forget they are normal people, just like everyone else. All thats different is their job puts their faces EVERYWHERE. Its kinda like how I work as an electricians apprentice but if I had my ugly mug posted everywhere in some from of media I could be famous. A lot of celebrities are really cool people but there are always the few bad apples that let all the attention they get go to their heads
Also, there was Alien: The Play when a US Highschool, put on a school play version of Alien and Sigourney Weaver actually came to see it, at a special command performance and even took the stage for an introduction. The whole thing is on UA-cam BTW
@@weldonwin The is awesome!! I had actually heard something about that awhile back, but didn't know it was on UA-cam. Will have to track it down. Thanks!
Bill Paxton was the only actor that was on-screen killed by an Alien, a Predator and a Terminator (he played one of the three punks at the beginning of Terminator 1). Thank you, director James Cameron, for giving him the acting jobs.
The lines that the characters exchange: “Hey, Vasquez- you ever been mistaken for a man?” “No, have you?” It’s incredibly BOTH hilarious AND utterly exquisite! 🤣👍
Too true. That's one of those quick zingers that is elevated to legendary status by the perfect delivery timing, context, sparsity of words and actor's skill.

And I love how some game designers have worked that sound into their games to build tension as well. It's not quite as "clear" in their games, but the pinging or 'popping" you can hear in the background has been used several times, and ALWAYS been effective in making you go "oh crap".
Absolutely! I work with a bunch of machines and sometimes they make strange sounds depending on how they're cutting (mills and lathe's). One time another guys machine starting making a noise just like that radar ping. Got my attention immediately! Oh shit! Oh, wait... whew" lol
Ripley is such a badass. Not only is she smart and able to adapt under stress, she's able to overcome being terrified as hell and push through her fear against impossible odds.
Well-said! I agree 100%! Ripley didn't want to be there in the first place, but she made the best of the situation for herself, and of course for Newt.
@@Dinosaurs_with_laser_guns Yep. I've always found the "Vin Diesel"-archtype incredible boring, no matter the gender of the character. Characters with flaws and those able to actually lose make much more interesting viewing. There's far too few of those around these days, especially female. Emily Blunt has had few of good characters, I loved her in Edge of Tomorrow and The Quiet Place.
@Parvis Indeed, Parvis. They make bad movies, fill them with woke politics, and then call anyone that doesnt lile it Bigots instead of taking the responsibility of making a bad movie.
I love that Lieutenant Gorman goes back for Vasquez, and Hudson - despite always being the first to freak out and lose it - never fails to step up to the plate. That despite their weaknesses, they show their strengths in the end.
What I actually like about Gorman as a character is that even though he was clearly the wrong choice for the assignment - not experienced enough, couldn't build good rapport with the team before the mission, etc., he's still not a bad person. He screws up, but he does everything he can to fix things.
Probably too late to this, but, Hudson is much more understandable if you look into Alien lore. He mentions in the movie he only has four more weeks of service. What they don't go into is that Hudson, unlike the other squad members, only signed on for ten years. After that he planned to buy a bar, and live the rest of his life on the profits in luxury. So he's literally a month away from a lifelong dream that would set him up forever. Another thing the film doesn't do well is illustrate just how much experience the squad has with dealing with alien species, it's just they haven't had to deal with a species as powerful and dangerous. Hudson has survived in a top squad for almost ten years, he isn't a bad soldier, just overwhelmed.
@@Sandy-dd4le Yeah, when the shtik hits the fan towards the end, Hudson fights with courage and bravery. He saves Newt from one of the face huggers, and releases his pent-up nervous feelings in a great cathartic moment by killing a whole bunch of the aliens before he himself goes down in combat (literally! He gets dragged through a hole in the floor. Spoiler alert for a nearly 40 years old movie... :P) Hudson's a solid dude when you sum it all up.
He also doesn't deserve to be called an asshole by Vasquez, considering the mess they are in is her fault, for disobeying orders and firing a machine gun into a nuclear reactor.
I absolutely love the part where Ripley is saving Newt from the hive. Ripley fires a warning shot of her flamethrower basically telling the Queen let us go and I wont kill your eggs. The Queen acknowledges this and lets Ripley leave, but one of the eggs hatches and the look Ripley gives her "Bitch, really". Its so good.
@@AngraMango Yeah, I hate thinking about how Hudson just gets grabbed and isn't saved :( He's probably passed out with a facehugger attached to him when the colony blows up so there's that at least...
I have friends that think she just outright attacked the queen's eggs without provocation BUT there was clearly an agreement between them, Ripley started backing out and one of the eggs opened off to the side of her. Ripley's head tilt before unleashing is obviously her saying "you dishonour our agreement."
@@L1VE3V1L It's the egg that broke the agreement, not the queen. Why would you think that the queen is in control of an egg that hatches when it detects movement? Ripley made a trade of their escape for sparing the eggs in bad faith, already knowing the reactor was going to blow and kill the babies anyway, but then couldnt stop herself from torching all the eggs too. I think we earned anything when get from the xenos after that. ;)
"He has a kind face" I actually laughed out loud at that. Shame you didnt see the special edition, the scene with the turrets is straight up my favorite scene the movie. Also the deleted scene of her daughter make everything with Newt much stronger.
Ya. This movie and Terminator 2 have so much that gets added with the Special Edition it is almost a crime in my eyes that its possible to see the other versions. Because the Specials add so much, without messing up pacing or making the movies last too long.
@@richardgaldos6901 , I have to disagree. Especially the way the Special Edition of Aliens spends time showing Hadley's Hope and Newt's family before Ripley and the marines go there... makes the movie drag and takes the suspense away. The theatrical edition follows Ripley's point of view during most of the story and that, to me, is its greatest strength. It makes the 1st act much more atmospheric and way more mysterious, especially because you as a viewer see Hadley's Hope only when it has already been destroyed. The Special Edition has the daughter plotline in it, that's true. That's the only thing I would have added to the theatrical cut myself, but I have reservations towards that as well. As a sci-fi action movie the theatrical cut of Aliens works - we as viewers root for Ripley's relationship with Newt in a more universal way - Ripley has a parental instinct as a human being - she doesn't necessarily need the specific background for the main story to work and to make her character feel believable.
@@jcp1984again I get your point on Hadley's Hope and Newts family at the start. I think you make valid points there. But some of the other scenes like the Turret scene and Hicks talking with Ripley I find to be excellent scenes that really belong in the movie. I guess this movie really doesnt need the extended cut, I just think it is better. Terminator 2 on the other hand I feel really should always be the extended cut. Just a lot of great scenes
Don't forget "a kind face". :) Then an hour later Cassie's all " I can't believe I ever liked you!! "Special place!'" Hey...that reminds me. What about Serenity for Cassie?
@Purple Emerald If only Jonesy had been in this movie, it would have fit the pattern perfectly. Rats and darn it. Now I want to see a cartoon where Ripley and Newt fly around the galaxy helping to solve mysteries with the help of their trusty sidekicks: a face-hugger, a baby alien that bursts out of Newt's chest any time he is needed, and an adult alien who has decided to be nice and not eat people... kind of like the vampires in Twilight. It's gonna be great.

I love that Cassie's the first reviewer I've seen who was worried about the use of language around Newt/Rebecca. Also, how Cassie has trained herself not to swear is truly impressive. (I am not so strong.)
The motion tracker is one of the most underrated aspects of this film. James Cameron realized that the motion tracker is not a device to detect aliens. It's a device to build suspense. And it worked so perfectly. "There's somethin' movin' in here, and it ain't us..."
"He's got a kind face" *Everyone who's seen the movie shifts uneasily* This is not only my favourite Alien movie, but one of my all time favourite movies ever. I saw this at the cinema when it was originally released and I've lost count of how many times I've seen it since. Even now in the age of CGI it still holds its own and seeing it on the big screen back in 1986 was nothing short of mind-blowing. One of the greatest films of the modern era.

There is a story Structure book named after what Ripley did. It's called "Save The Cat" and is written by Blake Snyder. It's what good storytellers do to redeem a much maligned or otherwise hated character. They have them do something noble or sweet or more "human" like "saving a cat." Ripley wasn't well liked for not allowing their shipmate back onboard with a face hugger attached to him, but near the end when boarding the escape pod, she stopped and went back for "Jones" the cat.

I've said it before... the intensity of your reactions is amazing, and you make these movies feel new again. Don't let anyone make you feel bad... this is absolutely a terrifying action/horror film. It's also a landmark piece of cinema. At the time it released, it was uncommon for an action blockbuster to have such depth of human relationships, particularly around a female lead. The movie's juggling of different forms of motherhood and maternal instinct really lifts it above the genre. The relationship and between Ripley and Newt, along with scenes like Vazquez and Gorman wrapping themselves around the grenade, are filled with so much raw emotion.
“She’s the bravest woman I’ve ever seen.” I’ve been a fan of this movie since it came out and I still stand by your statement. I was a kid who hated horror movies but characters like Ripley gave me courage. It was a joy to watch your reaction. Fun fact: Sigourney Weaver was nominated for Best Actress for this performance.
Some people whine about how her character is too motivated by motherly instincts and that's not feminist enough. You heard that right! Yeah sure, women are more than just baby factories, got it, but it's still a pretty integral part to being a woman, but this aspect is seen as reductive by modern feminists and needs to be denied... Ripley is such a great character. She isn't a soldier, she has no training, she isn't without fear, and literally everyone in the movie (except Newt) is physically more powerful/capable than her. Yet she so naturally slips into a leadership role because of her smarts and resourcefulness. She also knows how to deal with people and legitimately cares for others. I love that her first instinct during the Hive attack is to rush into danger to try to save as many of the Marines as she could. Ripley isn't just one of the best female heroes in cinema, she's one of the best heroes, period. *Edit* I forgot about Burke. He looks kind of soft, and Ripley sure did pin him to that window pretty quick. I think she could take him in a fight.
When anyone tells you that there haven't been female action stars, point to Ripley. She doesn't act like a man, either. She's a tough-minded woman. Awesome, awesome character.
Cassie has become one of my favorite UA-camr. She is so genuine with her reactions and has such a beautiful, caring heart. Too many UA-cam reactors are so fake. Your not alone in your crush on Harrison Ford. My mom had a HUGE crush on him along with most women. Am I the only one that can see Cassie becoming like Ripley in that situation to protect a child? She has very strong maternal instincts.
My older sister had a crush on Harrison Ford. My younger sister wanted to out-badass him - she became a paramedic and worked search and rescue, so I think she succeeded.
A lot of people don't know that Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. Best actress - for a sequel, to a horror movie, in an action film. It was pretty much unheard of. She didn't win, but it just shows how strong an actress she is and how good James Cameron is at writing strong female characters. One thing I do want to say though - you probably won't see this but if you haven't watched Alien 3 yet, just know that it's a much darker film than these first two.
Alien 3 is crap and makes no sense whatsoever, so many unanswered questions, like how did a face hugger get into the cryo chambers when the queen never left the loading dock to place an egg so deep in the ship? the biggest question of the whole movie?

I will never for the life of me understand why the whole backstory about Ripley’s dead daughter was cut from the theatrical release. It adds so much more depth to her relationship with Newt. Ripley finds a second chance at motherhood through Newt. Motherhood literally is the core theme of the film, right down to the Queen and the Alien life cycle.
@@TequilaToothpick borderline moronic behavior was commonplace at 20th Century Fox. They fought with directors on including Ripley in every film. Yes-the main protagonist of all four Alien films almost wasn’t in them. No, the theatrical release was superior and it was more powerful when Newt called Ripley mommy at the end without the need for the Ripley daughter reference. Nothing will change the power of the theatrical release what audiences experienced that fateful debut day in 1986.
In the extended cut we learn more about Ripley and her daughter which gives her and Newt a more mother and daughter relationship and it’s really good and Newt has some extra scenes including her family finding the ship with the eggs and seeing her father get face hugged so I’d highly recommend checking it out

"How are these things so horrifying? They're like metal with teeth." The original design for the Alien was by Swiss surrealist (and a master with the airbrush) HR Giger, whose style was often described as "biomechanical"; a seamless fusion of aspects from flesh, bone, and machine. He was once stopped at airport customs because the authorities thought his paintings were actual photos of hardcore BDSM and corpses. Giger also designed the (unrelated) alien Sil, from the movie Species, which I hope you'll also watch!

"Newt" never went on to act after this movie but on one of her own videos, she said that she had a lot of fun and got close to the cast. Personally I prefer the Director’s Cut of this movie, as it puts more emphasis on Ripley as a mother with losing her daughter due to the 57 year sleep and Newt kinda filling that role afterwards. There are also some additional action type scenes that are awesome too. But the original is always good too ^^
She did the right thing by watching the theatrical version first, because the special edition spoils too much early on (the facehuggers attacking the colonists). In the theatrical version, we get more of a sense of mystery and discovery of what happened to the colonists. Now that she's seen the theatrical, it would be fine to also watch the special edition
Yeah, the Director's Cut does a better job of establishing Ripley and Newt's relationship. I think that's the only thing really missing from the Theatrical Cut, the rest is just action scenes that don't really matter much, or stuff that's redundant. Cool scenes still, but not really needed.
Ripley is one of my favorite characters of all time. She's iconic. But the Marines in this are so freaking well fleshed out. Iconic lines. Best sequel ever made!
By the looks of it this isn't the directors cut. The studio cut some rather good character and background scenes out - which was a shame, if you ever consider re-watching this, you'd do well to seek it out and give the Director's cut a chance.
I don’t know that Cassie wants to sit through this movie a second time. Since she has seen the movie, she might do better just watching the Ripley’s daughter scene and the Hadley’s Hope sequence on UA-cam separately.💕
The director's cut is garbage. The additional scenes add nothing. Only nerds (not meant as an insult, but a description) find those additional scenes of any interest. There are movies that have suffered from missing scenes. This isn't one of them.

In the extended version Hicks and Ripley have a cute moment before she goes off to rescue Newt. Hicks tells her his first name is Dwain and Ripley tells him her first name is Ellen. And Hicks says, “Don’t be gone too long Ellen.”
To put in perspective how vile of a character he is, Paul Reiser's own *mother* cheered Burke's death at the premiere. And his sister playfully punched him for playing such a slimeball character.
Interesting Fact 1: Filming wasn't easy on the cast and crew. However, the cast allowed the girl playing Newt to do the "slide scene" six times because she was having so much fun. Even though it wasted almost an entire day's worth of filming, the crew knew that she (especially) needed to have a "little fun" on the set to ease the tension behind the camera.
Well the "tensions" where due to the difference in work ethics between Cameron, who was a Workaholic, and the British crew that would only work from 8 to 4 and have Tea and crumpets every 2 hours, no matter if they where in the middle of a scene or not. Cameron has this Great Movie Director aura now, but at the time of the shooting of Aliens, his 1st movie Terminator, wasn't evne out, since he was shooting Aliens AND editing terminator at the same time. The Crew, not happy that an American got to be director on Aliens, instead of their compatriote Ridley Scott, where like "we're gonna piss him off", wich honestly was not proffesional at all. One day Cameron was so pissed off, that he tossed the Tea and Coffee table out, then the whole crew went on a strike. The Studio Execs had to step in, thats where Cameron then showed them a private projection of Terminator when the Editing was about done. After that the Crew reluctantly agreed that he was not someone without talent, and agreed to work more seriously. When the final scenes where in, and before Cameron flew back to the states to start the editing of the movie he told the crew that he had great Displeasure to work with them, and Hope that they won't ever again work togheter.
@@Mugthraka I keep hearing about that kinda mess all the time. Most recent one was Tom Cruise going off on them because they were fucking around doing dumb shit again for who knows what reason. Well... at least they are consistent. lol

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 the future with advancements in technology and its services always will be better but Alfonso's asertments were in the context of cinematography. Hollywood is in a nasty down hill's decline of quality since a decade back with no signs of getting up. Today's films are hell way subpar even against 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's cinematography. The 80's and the 90's films were the top of the creme of the whole industry's history.

Sarah Connors arc that spans from T1 to T2 ... her and Ripley to me are two of the best characters in any action movie, man or woman it doesn't matter they are badarse, and THAT is the kind of strong female character you want, men don't have to be put down in passive aggressive ways to further an agenda to create a "strong" female lead, you just have to FULLY develop their character and the key female roles that make the hugest impact have that in spades, well written and hard hitting. It wasn't just Weaver's "sheer skill" that made Ripley iconic either, she played a woman not a woman trying to be a man.. and that I think is crucial in creating strong women. What's wrong with being a woman whose strong instead of emulating what "strong men" do ? far more refreshing the way Weaver and Hamilton played their respective roles.
That's because back then Hollywood actually took the time and effort to write good characters, male and female. For years now they've been more interested in special effects and and making sure the diversity boxes are all checked. The writing seems to be more of an afterthought with most movies. Personally I'd rather just have good writing and less concern with effects and politics.

One of the reasons I love Hudson is that despite being boisterous, and seemingly snapping, when it comes down to actual danger, he's never not on the top of his game. His part in saving Ripley and Newt, the final fight, etc.
Ripley is a great example of a strong female lead done right, IMO. No in your face “girl power” crap calling attention to her gender. Just a badass character who happens to be a woman
A great character, male or female, really relies on having a great script. While you could have cast any actor as the main protagonist, the theme of two mothers facing off in the end calls for a strong female lead. And Sigourney Weaver really cemented her position as that. There are too many crappy scripts these days where they glue in female characters to try and cash in on the 'mah representation' bit. When they inevitably fail to garner a positive response (and more importantly, big cash returns), everyone who doesn't like the movie get's called a bigot rather than the studio taking some introspection in the crap they were trying to peddle... It does a disservice to great female actors (Emma Stone in Cruella for example) and puts people off trying new movies because most of them today are awful.
The reason why is in the first movie, Ripley was originally written to be a male character, then changed it at the last minute after the script was already written. That's why she's a strong character, because you're allowed to hold male characters responsible for their own actions. And that's also why the character got worse and worse with every sequel. In the 3nd one she was just awful, and in the 4th one... she was just a joke.
@@jimlight5137 You can create strong female characters without making them masculine, there's plenty of them. Most of them aren't however, because most writers are afraid of holding their female characters responsible for their actions, or making them suffer. Last one I can think of that was written to take responsibility for her own actions and made to suffer was Sansa Stark, and it took her about 7 seasons before she toughened up and took charge, without having to be the slightest bit masculine.
Back in the 80's and 90's, this is how people portrayed feminine power. Ripley is an icon that created a standard on how to be both smart, feminine, strong, and show respect to men at the same time.
Yup so when people complain about female protagonists it's not because they are women it's because Ripley was constructed perfectly now they are show hoarded without thought.
Nonsense, the issue is modern movie are mostly garbage. The real point here is that back my day we didn't cry about "policial correctness" when strong female characters like Ripley or Sarah Conner were cast.
@@Miguelc271086 Thats what we are getting at most plots now are wrote around an agenda its not a faithful portrayal of the character for instance Captain Britain they are making him female because inclusion, super woman, bat woman I've watched them they are crap and only serve to push an agenda instead of writing a proper plot plus look at Johnny Depps situation it tells you everything you need to know about how the film media is currently swayed.
I've seen this movie over 100 times, it's one of my absolute favorites, but this reaction had me feeling anxious as if I was seeing for the 1st time all over again haha
I like Michael Biehn a lot as Kyle Reese in The Terminator, as Corporal Hicks in this but I think he's best performance was alongside Val Kilmer ( Which was his best As Doc Holiday) when he played the Crazy Murderous Johnny Ringo in Tombstone! One of my Favorite movies of all Time!
Definitely see what you did there. None of the rest are canon to me either, especially those awful AVP films which are a separate parallel universe anyways. Alien, Aliens and Alien: Isolation are the only ones I consider canon.
Ripley and Hicks fell in love, got married, adopted Newt and they all lived happily ever after. That's what happened after this movie. That and nothing else.
The '80's is where the modern look comes from-- mainly through very stylish British directors and cinematographers working in Hollywood at the time. Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Alan Parker, Adrian Lyne. And Americans like Peter Hyams and James Cameron. It's basically practical source lighting carefully manipulated and heightened for dramatic effect.
@@lanolinlight Partially true. Just as big contributor were film stocks that became readily available that made that type of filming much more feasible.
That move at 13:07 where Ripley stomps on the brake to make the alien fly in front of the car so she could punch the gas and flatten its behind is a seriously impressive move that I do not see talked about enough & I didn't remember from years back when I saw it
One of the other things not many folks appreciate fully is how strong the Xeno's are..that single punch, right through the APC's bulletproof drivers windshield..and with still enough inertia left in its arm & claws to swing a strike at Ripley in the same movement after going right through the armoured glass.. And later, their climbing upside down, silently, across the roof of the ops center..and again later, down vertical ventshafts easily & quietly, like that one trying to get the drop from above on Vazquez..with no problem supporting their entire body weight in a vertical climb, silently & quickly.. And gliding so silently through water that Newt didn't even sense or know it was right on top of her until it was already in arms reach of her, literally.. Which is copacetically every bit as graceful as any human gymnast or ballet dancer, or swimmer could ever get respectively..not something you notice or appreciate at the time, watching the movie..but in hindsight..these are highly telling levels of fluid power & Grace, clearly lots of evolution and their ability to silently communicate & work together as both a hive/pack mind..hunting all as one.. And yet, single Xeno's take on specific roles & targets seperate from the rest of the hive..like the one that targeted the drop-ship crew, and took out Spunkmeyer without alerting Corporal Collette Ferro that anything was wrong, until it's already seriously invading your personal space, in your own cockpit.. And the other ones, that went after Newt, and one for Vasquez..another for Hudson, from below..all single, specifically targeted, 1-v-1 engagements & taskings, even as all the others grouped & attacked en-mass with brute force & overwhelmingly numbers. But, (as we saw against the sentry guns in the special edition).. they can reason & count losses, see cause & effect..alter strategies on the fly & change their plans..even know enough to cut power & use elevators.. And the Queen, later on as she chases Ripley to the Sulaco's cargo bay bulkhead door, and rams into it like a bulldozer, you can actually see & hear the entire, giant hydraulic door paused & slowed in its travel for a moment, by the Queen's charge against it.. Given how skeletal they seem at first glance, they're clearly immensely powerful & 'graceful' bastards, in their own right.. A far cry from just being mere 'bugs' Hudson, Drake & Ms "Where they are" Vasquez..you all seriously underestimated your enemy, mate.. That's why it's "game over" for you All. Newt was by far the wiser of them all, even Ripley saw & recognised that early on..understanding Newt's assertion that "It won't make any difference" was this hardened survivor's genuine assesment of their situation & chances..against the Xeno's. That's a far more competent & evolved, pro-level, apex-predator species than most folks ever give them credit for, as you first watch the movie. Ripley's idea of just getting the hell off-world, and nuking them from orbit, was not just good tactical thinking for minimizing risks saving their own human lives.. It was her own recognition & consideration of just how powerful and resilient & apex-predator level these Xeno's really were. Like Newt, she had experienced them first hand, up close & personal, slaughtering everyone around them.. The supposed 'bug-hunting' specialist Marines (their squad motto, on the side of their dropship, in a diving eagle shooting a weapon logo, is "Bugstompers! We endanger species.") were actually the real 'amatures' here, in this story..something you also only appreciate long after they're all gone, and the movie's over. That subtle but serious twist of 'mere civilians' to be mocked & told to shut up..vs the might of much military power..sure did an about-face towards becoming a farce, fast.. Admittedly, the plot twist that had them all disarmed of most of their capability to fight hard & use all of that military might, like the APC and all its heavy weaponry as well, inside the atmoshere processor's reactor..was a big factor in dumbing down the marines & the massive amount of ass-kicking they could've given the Xeno's in a real, unfair fight.. But there wouldn't really be a movie, much less a true redemption & a rescue, for Ripley & Rebecca, otherwise.. But take a few moments to think about the fight & the tactics, the capability, vitality & smarts of the way the Xeno's actually held up their side too. Devilishly smart, smooth & detirmined bunch of giant, hive-minded, preying mantis level bastards.
I’m from Scotland and back in the late 90s there was an movie exhibition at one of the city museums which had loads of authentic props from James Bond to Indiana Jones. The centrepiece of the exhibition was the actual alien Queen animatronic prop from Aliens. It was absolutely gigantic and frankly the movie does not give credit to the sheer size and scale of this beast.
Ack! I hate the extended edition! Ruins the film's tension by showing way way too much -- there's a reason that stuff landed on the cutting room floor. It's the unknown that scares you. That said, once you've seen the real thing, extended editions can be amusing. Have my doubts Cassie is going to turn into a hardcore horror maven however.
@@ccdecc6650 All they had to do was keep that 1-2mins scene near the start (you know the one I mean) in the theatrical version. I'll never understand to this day why they cut that, it adds huge depth to Ripley's motivations later on. But yes, the rest of the stuff in the extended edition is expendable though.
James Cameron deserves a great deal of credit for portraying military men pretty accurately (not only in this movie, but generally). He shows how quickly morale evaporates when things go sideways, and how quickly poor or inexperienced leadership can accelerate such a sideways move. The military dynamic of this group is just spot on.
"He's got a kind face". Just give it about an hour, and... "I was very wrong about Burke". Because of this one role, I've never been able to think of this actor as anything other than a giant asshole, even when he's played a nice character I'm still waiting for him to try and screw everybody over, even when the credits are rolling 'the asshole is going to do something', even when the movie is over 'the asshole is going to do something in the sequel', 30 years later 'Just wait for it, as soon as my guard is down...asshole', either him or myself is dead 'asshole'. Paul Reiser, you played this role perfectly.
Funny thing about the appearances: Hudson vs Burke ... while the jerk is not easy to live around, it's the smooth talker that will sell you to the wolfs.
Paul Reiser (who played Burke) took his mom to the premiere. His character was so hated that she clapped when he died.

Carrie Henn (Newt), had so much fun sliding down that vent that she kept blowing the scene so she could redo the take. James Cameron promised that if she nailed the scene, she could use the vent slide all she wanted. She nailed it in the next take and Cameron let her use it for the rest of the day.
Lovely story. Thanks.

The sound design was amazing in these movies.

Well-said! I agree 100%! Ripley didn't want to be there in the first place, but she made the best of the situation for herself, and of course for Newt.
At the same time she’s still feminine, and also very human. Very well balanced character. Not like a lot of today’s female hero characters.

@@cheezemonkeyeater and he found his balls and stepped up at the end.
Ripley's head tilt before unleashing is obviously her saying "you dishonour our agreement."
@@L1VE3V1L It's the egg that broke the agreement, not the queen. Why would you think that the queen is in control of an egg that hatches when it detects movement? Shame you didnt see the special edition, the scene with the turrets is straight up my favorite scene the movie. Also the deleted scene of her daughter make everything with Newt much stronger.
overall I think the special edition was far superior cause it had more development in the characters.

Almost like it was scripted that way 🤔
the sign of a truly great film is that more than 30 years later, having seen it countless times, it still gets my heart thumping from start to finish!
So many modern movies could take serious notes on Ripley for how to be a strong female character.
And then there are people who claim there never was such a character before (add new movie here)
And Ripley was before Thelma & Louise. Awesome!
Yep.
Happily a new subscriber.
Burke was a slime shit, unable to do any harm when he´s not behind a desk or sneaking in your back.
if we do 2 minute rounds my money is on Ripley for the W by knockout.
True, she "Lara Croftesque". She's an well deserved badass.

Your not alone in your crush on Harrison Ford. My mom had a HUGE crush on him along with most women.
Am I the only one that can see Cassie becoming like Ripley in that situation to protect a child? She has very strong maternal instincts.
this is so kind!! Thank you
I think she is rather like Sarah Connor in: The Terminator and we know how that turns out.
My older sister had a crush on Harrison Ford. My younger sister wanted to out-badass him - she became a paramedic and worked search and rescue, so I think she succeeded.
I noticed she identified as if she was Newt more than Ripley
I'd pay to see Cassie doing cosplay of Ripley in the mech suit, saying "GET AWAY FROM HER YOU ... bad monster!"
Dont see Alien 3. Depressing and unpleasant.

Yeah I was shocked that wasn't in the theatrical cut. Stupid choice to exclude it
@@TequilaToothpick borderline moronic behavior was commonplace at 20th Century Fox. They fought with directors on including Ripley in every film. "How are these things so horrifying? They're like metal with teeth." The original design for the Alien was by Swiss surrealist (and a master with the airbrush) HR Giger, whose style was often described as "biomechanical"; a seamless fusion of aspects from flesh, bone, and machine.

The sentry guns scene is also pretty badass.
Yeah, the Director's Cut does a better job of establishing Ripley and Newt's relationship. I think that's the only thing really missing from the Theatrical Cut, the rest is just action scenes that don't really matter much, or stuff that's redundant. Cool scenes still, but not really needed.

I loved the scene where Hicks was talking about knives and sharp sticks. Pity that scene was not shown here.
Wow I never knew that 🙂😄
Aww! That’s cute. 😁

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 the future with advancements in technology and its services always will be better but Alfonso's asertments were in the context of cinematography.
Ripley is a great example of a strong female lead done right, IMO. No in your face “girl power” crap calling attention to her gender. Just a badass character who happens to be a woman
Exactly, i never saw her as "women" strictly, i saw her as badass.
This is why we named our daughter Ripley.
"This just never ends!"
That's what makes the movie a classic.

“I can’t believe I ever liked your face!”
Fantastic line.
Sounds like her reaction to Psycho.
If you ever rewatch this one check out the expanded version. It has more scenes developing the story of Ripley and Newt that I think you’d appreciate.
Yeh, I liked the stuff before she went with the marines, especially.
Just watch the extra 35 mins of deleted scenes from director’s cut which will fill in so many blanks and holes.
Time for The Terminator? Another great Michael Bien movie.
Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and directed by James Cameron. Just like this one. :P
Very true.
He seemed pretty cool in stranger things though? But maybe there's a twist coming 😂
@@georgechapman9688 There will be, there...will...be [says with a suspicious look on my face]
Funny thing about the appearances: Hudson vs Burke ... while the jerk is not easy to live around, it's the smooth talker that will sell you to the wolfs.
You're successful because your reactions are genuine, or at least come across that way. It helps massively.
