I really like that they gave LT. Gorman a redemption arc. He starts off as an arrogant a-hole but once he realizes how far out of his league he is, he lets the people with real capability take control of the situation. When he and Vasquez get cornered in the vent, I was really moved by his willingness to die next to someone, bravely, by taking out as many aliens as they could.

The biggest difference between Ripley and modern Heroines, and why Ripley is such a damn good character is that she is entirely believable. She is still Feminine, they didn't write her to replicate how they think a male Action hero would act, she shows motherly instincts to Newt, and she kicks arse when she has to and not a second more, no unnecessary risks, she does absolutely what is necessary for her and Newt to survive. All of this gives her depth as a character and makes her a completely believable badass!

    • @1grantharper
      @1grantharper 3 роки тому +8

Sounds great, but falls apart once you realise that modern heroines are actually all that too. If anything Sigourney lacks a lot of the femininity of more typical heroines with her bone structure and height. Also has much more of a flat affect (compared to the hysterical Paxton for instance). I wouldn't be surprised if they created the Newt character to make Sigourney appear less masculine overall.
Another thing that no one talks about is Ripley's lack of training, strength or skills and still managing to leave all the space marines/real men for dead. Sound familiar?

@@1grantharper Some of those issues from Ripley are addressed in the film. She had training with the loader, which you seen her use early in the film that makes a comeback in the big final fight with the big queen in the end. Hicks had a short scene introducing her to the weapons and Ripley first looked awkward the first time using one (when the aliens broke in the lab from above), which can be expected from first time firing a weapon. As for leaving the men behind, she mentioned they were being cocooned like the colonists were (and Kane in the first movie). Her response of nuking the site from orbit may be a more humane solution then living as an alien host.

As far as know, the writers didn't know who was a man and who was woman when they first wrote Alien... so they made all characters believable. The director chose their gender after the script was done... so yeah, it'n not that writers could do a better job, it's just that they wrote a man. But once the character was established, the next writers just had to be consistent. Still, I agree with the commenter bellow... the writers introduced a daughter and a mother/daughter dynamic to make her feel more female/feminine.

Yes, there is some terrible CGI, but there can be pretty terrible practical effects too. CGI is simply a tool for effects teams to make use of and there are a lot of things that you simply cannot do with practical effects.
I do agree that CGI has become over used, frequently as a shortcut, where the same effects can be achieved with practical, in camera effects and in many cases, would have looked better as in camera effects.
It just happens that on Aliens, James Cameron had considerable experience with practical special effects himself (He'd previously worked with Exploitation Schlock-Meister Roger Corman where he learned to make impressive effects shots on the cheap) and was working with his long time collaborator, Effects God Stan Winston who previously worked with Cameron on The Terminator.

It makes her relationship with Newt that much more powerful. Also, the scenes with the automated guns shooting Aliens were a Special Edition add. They might seem superfluous, but without them the Aliens kind of disappear for a huge chunk of the middle of the movie. Good to have them test the defenses to keep the threat up.
On the other hand, I don't think they needed to include the scenes on the colony, before the outbreak. They kind of slow the pace down, don't really add anything relevant to the story, and I think it's a lot more tense not seeing the colony until the Marines open the doors and move in.

Let’s make it clear that theatrical version was the one Ebert was talking about. In the extended version, the restored colony scenes revealed too much too soon and drained away the fear of the movie’s first half. Remember, people watch this movie when it premiered with no idea which direction it was going to take and they expected at least a horror film and the movie’s first hour delivered.

I actually saw this opening night. No one knew what to expect. Cameron still wasn't well known. But it turned out to be the best theater experience I've ever had.
Cameron was smart in not trying to just copy the first film,a mistake that all the other films made in one way or another. Sadly this film would be the high point for the franchise. After this it's all downhill in various ways. Even the ones by Scott, who you think would know better, are just laughable in their stupidity.
Your comment about them being a family was spot on. In fact in the great commentary for the film by James Cameron he says that he set it up that way for the next film. He wanted to do a third one but for some reason they never got back to him so he made the Abyss instead, which was a far better film than Alien 3 turned out to be. Alien 3 was,in Cameron's own words,a kick in the balls to the fans of the second film. It's a franchise that should never have been a franchise. Especially once the AVP films came out the entire thing became a joke. Best to react to The Abyss instead of any more of these.

Cameron spends a couple hours creating a world rooted in realism with mysterious ‘underwater flying objects’ and then goes full on fairytale “and they lived happily ever after”... it doesn’t work. He should’ve kept everyone in the dark about the UFOs, have Ed Harris still diffuse the nuke and then send an obscure message right before he dies... and then end the movie with the crew doomed to suffocate... that would’ve made it a great film... leave the viewer wondering...

I work with a lot of machines and depending on what they're programmed to make, they can make a lot of different sounds. One day, a machine was doing a cutting cycle that sounded exactly like the motion detectors in this movie. It immediately snapped me out of whatever I was doing and that sound had my FULL attention for the few seconds it took me to recognize what was going on. If you watch this movie enough, that sound will get to you.

@GUNNER67akaKelt LOL! One of the machines in the factory where I work made a similar noise. It was only for a day, and I never figured out which machine was doing it. Also, one of the air handler units sounds like the giant ants from the movie THEM, when the bearings start to run out of oil :D It really makes you think about how they create some of these sound effects for movies.

Fun fact: the pulse rifle is actually just a Thompson sub machine gun with cosmetic additions and the Rig mounted “smart guns” are MG-42 machine guns. The best sci fi weapons are always the ones that use existing weapons as a base. It gives it a more believable ascetic.

It required a person being in the back in order to control extra features. Only thing seperarting Ripley and this technician was the black seat padding.
Well unbeknownst to both as a stunt the crew rigged a lever to rise at the push of a button to simulate a rising bulge this pressed into Ripley's back. Much hilarity ensues with Ripley arguing with this guy and his 'behavior'

One of my favorite movies and I am only 35 years old. Aliens is a classic and definitely felt it better than the first film although first movie is classic in its own right. Aliens has a good story line and fun characters with the Marines. Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton steal the show as Hicks and Hudson. Paul Reiser does a good job playing the sneaky Company official more interested in getting the species back for testing and not caring about Ripley and others. Lance Henriksen is memorable as the robot Bishop. Sigourney Weaver is even better as Ripley and like how she takes in Newt as her own played by Carrie Henn who was in her first film and only movie before becoming a teacher in her adult life.

Great reaction video as usual. You’re lucky to be able to see this just one month after Alien! It was a big deal when this came out, seven whole years after the first one!
