  • Reliability is one of the most important things to consider when buying a new car. Of course, some are going to be more reliable than others - but what are the models you may want to steer clear of when making a new purchase? Mat's pulled together a list of the top 15 most unreliable, including anything from a Bentley to a Tesla! But what do you think will take the top spot? Keep watching to find out!
Thanks to Warrantywise for helping us create this video - www.warrantywise.co.uk/
This survey has been calculated using data taken from the extended car warranty data held by Warrantywise and the repairs they have received. A spokesman for Warranty Wise said: “Warrantywise does not release data for cars unless we have a minimum of 100 vehicles as a sample amount. This data relates to claims between 2010 and 2020 and may not represent the reliability of new vehicles as all of the data in the set is for vehicles over 3 years old.”

Also, Nissan makes their own engines, McLaren outsource to an engineering firm that has nothing to do with them and it's not a Nissan engine (and yes I'm aware that an engineer in that firm worked on some '90s Nissan Le Mans engines, something I doubt you know but rather saw someone comment something similar).

Most of the cars are also expensive cars, thus spare parts are more expensive, thus their score will be bad. But relatively to their purchase price it could be quite acceptable, as the Bentley shows.
A more useful list would have been if the average repair cost had been divided by the average purchase price.

@@jannandjohn Oh I am not suggesting Range Rover's are 100% reliable. Not even close. But, as you can see from this 'least reliable cars' video, it wasn't a Range Rover that was the worst 4x4, with no Discovery branded cars showing at all. The most unreliable 4x4s were the Porsche Cayenne and X6. Porsche, as a brand, is largely omitted from reliability stats due it not selling in sufficient numbers, with the MOST unreliable car being a Bentley. The more software you have installed in your car - the more trouble you are going to get. It really isn't a difficult concept to grasp and it amazes me how people seem to think this is particular, or unique, to one company.
How often do you get updates for your Apps with the update info showing 'Various Bug fixes'? Software installed with cars is no different Jan and John - the severity of bugs and instability being directly proportionate with its complexity. Whether that be Porsche, Bentley or Range Rover.

I am pretty interested in their target group since all the cars on the list are very high and and don’t tell me that a Bentley is less reliable than a suzuki swift. It is probably a very specific client group that they have. Also, it isn’t just about the number of issues, but also their costs. It can happen that Italian and French cars has many more issues, they are just cheapernto fix. Remember, there are no Vlokswagens or Skodas or Opelsbon thisnlist either...

i bought a 2005 nissan altima 2.5 S last year and everyone told me not to buy it, but i loved the size of the interior and it had four doors and a huge trunk. also it had all the options nissan offered that year. other then replaced one of the two cat. converters and replacing the shocks front and rear, this car has been a joy to own and has the smoothest and quietest ride of any car i have owned. great trans. everything works great even including the trunk light. the engine is absolutely ez to work on. changed over to mobile one high milage full syn. oil and she purrs like a kitten. no rust anywhere and the paint is in excellent condition. that year did not have the jenco trans. it has a great 3 speed trans. works and shifts like brand new. on a scale of 1 to 10 i would give this car an solid 9 ( not a ten, a little too many plastic parts, i can live with that, it keeps the weight down ). would i buy another, hell yea.

Thanks Mat! - i watched this a year late as i need a new (used) car now. To measure pain better, divide the repair cost by the value of the car just prior to the fault. So the pain is not measured in £ but in latest %... for all cars. You twigged this was needed when you mumbled that Bentley owners could easily pay their repair bills. Ranking by % pain will remove the distortion of widely differing car values, and so be more relevant to folk considering cars on the (corrected) list.

That was sold to upgrade to a 60 reg Mini Countryman (we got a good deal second hand to upgrade from the cooper). The head gasket blew at 50k miles, and the gear box had to be replaced. I had a 1999 Peugeot 406 HDi 2.00 litre Turbo Deisel Estate, I bought it at 47,000 miles, and drove it all over Scotland, Europe through the Mountains ,in Snow etc, I thrashed it around, and it was always very heavily loaded with stuff in the boot etc. It sat still outside for 2 years through 2 very cold winters and snow as I bought a newer 407HDi . Anyway after the car had sat for 2 yrs I recharged the battery and it started first time and ran perfectly, I took it for an MOT which it passed no problem. I then sold the car to a Farmer friend of mine for 500 pounds. I did 577,000 miles in the car personally, my friend is still using it and its now on 635,000 and in all this time it has Never broken down or had any failures. Obviously it had normal wear and tear items replaced from time to time like tyres, brake pads etc but nothing ever broke or failed. Excellent Ultra reliable car in my opinion. Also the 407 HDi I bought was a 2.00Litre Turbo Deisel and I did a staggering 393,000 on the same clutch also as like the 406 I never had any breakdowns at all with it. I am a mechanic and in my view of all the cars I have owned over nearly 50 yrs of driving I would rate them as the most reliable that I have ever owned.

It was great when on the road but for an ownership period of exactly 24 months, it spent about 14months in various garages being fixed and one month in my drive way when i gave up and would just look at it in amazement of it unreliability.

Yes, like Samuel says below, the study is flawed. The cost of repairs is directly proportional to the price of the car, that’s why you find a Bentley at the top. Being a DIY guy I find Toyota vehicles are well designed, good quality hardware/parts used when made. Working on a Toyota is fairly easy. Their vehicles are well designed by engineers. No problem getting parts as there is a huge aftermarket parts source availability. Just look at the vehicles in a parking lot. How many domestic vehicles that are fairly new do you see with paint/rust issues? What I notice is you still see a lot of older Toyota's, Honda's and some Subaru's on the road.

I'm surprised that 2008 model VW Passats aren't on your list. I bought a brand new Passat Sport diesel estate, we bought on the strength of our old utterly dependable reliable B5.5 Passat Estate
The B6 reliability was diabolical, it nearly killed us on a busy south bound M1 on a Sunday evening in November...EVERYTHING failed with the engine. Thank God, that the section of the M1 just before the M69 jn..didn't have a missing hard shoulder. I've never been so scared in all my life...I coasted it to the hard shoulder across all three lanes and 35' of truck, took forever to give me room to cut in behind it, all vehicles blasting their horns etc. I was numb at the thought of what could have happened. It was recovered by the RAC. The VW dealership said it would cost me over £600 to replace a short circuit injector and loom, the car was 2 weeks out of warranty...After I threatened to report VW to to DVSA...they did the repair for free as a good will gesture! They recalled them all for dodgy injectors.....I would imagine some serious accident and no doubt some fatalities, forced VW to act. BOTH handbrake motors seized. I gave up in the end and PX for my current 2010 XTrail...not too bad, apart from the cross member prone to rusting, and premature front suspension wear.
My sister had similar unreliability issues with her VW Tiguan....needless to say VWs will never be on our list for a new/2nd hand car!!!

Engineering and reliability are quite independent traits. The cars are actually engineered very well, but since they come from the part of the world with different consumer behaviours, there is not enough emphasis on longevity of the product. The average age of a car in Germany is about 9 years. Almost every car will make it that far. What happens then is not that big of a concern for them.

I´m going to start just saying that I love your channel!
I have been working a lot of years in the automotive industry for customers like Volvo, BMW and JLR.
Here in Sweden we have a study that gathers reports from our emergency departments, I mean Fire, Paramedics and Roadside Assistance. This study reveals a problem of which almost nothing is spoken and whenever it goes out to the public it is in one way or another covered so that it is forgotten. Well, the problem is quite serious and it is the fact that the emergency services that attend traffic accidents report that electric vehicles are highly dangerous for their personnel, since many people have received shocks when trying to open the doors. Even the occupants have received shocks trying to get out. This is related to damage to the battery container and is a tremendous problem when they have fire situations and the priority is to get people out of the vehicles. Well, here I leave it in case you want to do your own research on it. I think it is a good theme for your channel.
PS: the study also has reports from other countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany

    The reliability of my cars:
#1 1992 VW Golf III GL Automatic (2011-2012): Somehow good
It had only problems with its power windows and the car's engine suddenly went off. But I started it again, and this issue never happened again.
    Garage visitations: never
    #2 1997 Rover 214i (2012-2014): Somehow good/mediocre
15 HP less than the Golf, but it felt faster.
It had also problems with its front windows, but that was fixed up again. The (infamous) head gasket blown off BUT that also has been fixed - for not so high costs :)
One of its tyre screws broke off when the tyres has been changed
Its exhaust pipe had huge rust problems
    Its airbag light constantly flushed
Garage visitations: only once, or twice
#3 1998 Yugo Tempo 1.1 (Since 2013): More reliable than you think about a Yugo :)
I only use it when I'm in Serbia -> which means, I doesn't use it often.
Normally - with the exception of pulling over by itself (which has been fixed) and a (later discovered) engine fault - it doesn't have any main problems
Garage visitations: Not really - it was fixed by a friend
    #4 2001 Renault Scenic RX4 (2015-2016): Quite reliable for a French Car :)
My only car with AWD and diesel.
Its only main issue was the Alternator, and the weird flushing taillights
    Garage visitations: only once
    #5 2001 Mercedes A140 (2016-2018): Good
Like the Golf I shared the Merc with my dad. First it was very reliable. Then it had a very big issue: The lambda sond and the suspension - but it was fixed up again. One reason for the lambda sond fault: I often filled up with "Super E10", instead of "Super" (two versions of petrol in Germany, "Super" is normal petrol, "Super E10" contains Ethanol)
    Garage visitations: once or twice
    #6 1996 Rover 416Si (Since 2016): Bad
Unfortunately the most unreliable car I've ever have :( - and I love it :)
Its first issue was the gearbox. Then there were more issues (which has been repaired):
    - breaks (I had to be fixed up AGAIN shortly after released from the garage)
    - clutch
    - ignition
    - rear axis
    - front lights
It might be possible some of these garages screwing my Rover up on purpose! Sometimes I repair my Rover by myself and - strangely - there are less issues then (Even though, I'm not an mechanic).
The infamous head gasket has already been repaired - by its pre-owner
    Garage visitations: Many :(
#7 2002 Fiat Punto (2018-2019): good AND bad
This Fiat is like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde xD
When I had this Fiat, it was the most reliable car I've ever had!
When my little brother got his driving lincence, this Fiat was his 1st car. Unfortunately the same Fiat showed its bad side: constantly electrical faults!
Garage visitations: None under my ownership
#8 1989 Yugo Koral 45 (Since 2019) Same as the other Yugo
My vintage car, with some rust problems. Surprisingly, it starts almost immidiately, if you try to start after not touching for months! :O
    Garage visitations: once
    #9 2004 Ford Focus Mk2 (Since 2021): Good
My recent daily driver. A reliable car with a clever designed interior (and NO ASHTRAYS - I'm not a smoker, anyway xD) its issues:
    - broken door lock (luckily my Ford has also a lock on the passenger side)
    - starter (avoid bigger puddles on the street!)
    - screeching brakes (but only if you breaks, while driving backwards - same problem at Jaguar Land Rover cars)
    Garage visitations: once

Brian Rocks 9 out of 10 times it is usually the battery that needs to be replaced but all dealerships will make you pay them to go thru and replace every electrical component relevant to the fault before either forcing you to get a new car or telling you it’s the battery after the billed you $1000 to $2000 for unnecessary stuff. Sad thing is on BMWs when the battery is failing the amber/red check battery lamp is not used to tell you that . Instead the battery failure sets off check lamps and fault codes for any random electrical thing whether it be transmission, navigation, central locking, radio, wiper blades, abs, dsc, etc... I’ve had several BMWs going back from my first a 1995 318i to my father in law’s 2018 750i (which surprisingly already had a dead battery) and they all do the same thing when the battery is dead or dying. Not a lot of folks know this. Always do your UA-cam homework before buying a BMW.

@@angrysocialjusticewarrior X6 is very ugly. But not every SUV is ugly and expensive. Look at Peugeot 3008 or DS7 Crossback. Also you guys forget why SUVs got so popular. It's not because of off-road. People just want tall cars, because in tall car you can sit very comfortable (by comfortable I mean tall seating position, in wagons you have awkward and uncomfortable low siting position, especially in second row - your kness are almost on the level of your head ). So people want tall cars. However tall cars usually are not attractive (most minivans). To make tall cars less 'square', you need large ground clearance. Not for off-road. For LOOKS. Compare tall but low car (minivan) with something like Peugeot 5008. It has a tall body, but because of large ground clearance proportions are better than in case of minivan. So, crossovers and SUVs are good way to make tall car, but more attractive than minivan. Maybe wagons have better aerodynamics, but they aren't that much better looking than SUVs (most German wagons look like a sedan with glued bigger trunk in the rear). My biggest problem with the large European sedans/wagons is that they are a waste of space. Yes, waste. Despite common belief, wagons are not 'more practical' than SUVs. Larger European wagon has the same length as large SUV (around 5 meters) and similar width. So it's not easier to park wagon. Audi A6 avant is as hard to park as grand Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it's lower, so it has worse comfort. Jeep is big but it's not ugly as minivan, because large ground clearance at the bottom introduces some 'air' to sides. So SUVs are not stupid. Wagon is better only if you live in Germany and drive 250 km/h on autobahn. Most SUVs are silent and can drive well up to 200 km/h. In my opinion the best kind of car is sedan (because it looks really good), but it has to be very, very long to be comfortable (because of sloping roofline). That's not practical. Then next best car is a hatchback, because of good space/length/aerodynamics balance. Then there is an SUV, with almost minivan space but with better looks. Minivan itself is also acceptable if you care only about functionality.
Despite what you day, the dumbest cars are not SUVs. Small/midsize sedans or wagons (especially long wagons) are most stupid in my opinion. Because space/length balance is really bad for sedans, therefore in small and midsized sedans you don't feel comfortable. In wagons there is more space, but wagons are on the other hand uglier than sedans. Aerodynamics is the only gain compared to SUVs. Some people say wagons are more fun to drive, but it's no longer true. The difference in handling between good SUV and wagon is small, as wagon is not a true sporty car anyway (long wheelbase - not so much fun in the corners). Wagons are for people who think they can have everything at once - low, attractive sports car and comfortable car. But wagons are not truly sporty (long wheelbase), nor truly attractive (rear end), nor truly comfortable (low). Meant to do everything and good at nothing.
