- I'll share with you 3 demonstrations of how to create image transfers using gelli printing.
From my Skillshare class - 'Create Successful Image Transfers Using Gelli Printing'
View Skillshare Class - skl.sh/3fw3ecv
In this art class, we are going to focus entirely on creating successful image transfers using the gelli printing techniques. We will start with my favourite and easiest technique, using downloaded laser-printed images on pre-painted backgrounds. Then we will move on to using those same printed images, using a two colour mono-print. Finally, you will learn how to create successful image transfers using magazine pages.

I wanted to make you aware of the following: I did a lot of testing with inkjet printers instead of laser print copies. I have a Canon Pixma inkjet printer which uses a combination of pigment and dye ink. There are two methods for reliable image transfers: 1. Use brochure paper. 2. A fantastic cheap method I came across lately: just use plain paper. Use a black and white image (color converted to gray scale) and print it with your printer with normal, color (yes color ! settings). Press it onto your plate without any medium. Spray the back with water. Let it sit for a while. The water on the back of the paper will dislodge the ink. Peel the paper off and you will have a perfect transferred image. It might not work with every printer, but with printers such as Canon that use a combination of inks it works flawlessly
Wow! I will have to try this!! I would love to see what you transferred! 😍 cheers
I posted the full procedure plus image on “Learn Gelli Plate Printing” on FB. I got hundreds of thumbs up for this post, that shows that there is a real desire to learn more about this method. Not sure how to share images with you?
When you're ready to transfer the image to another paper, do you need to add paint over the image to get it to release from the gelli plate, or how does that work?
@@jessiebrown3207 yes. Let it first dry on the gelli plate and then lift it with paint or medium..
Beautiful, inspiring, easy to understand and best of all, encouraging for newbies!:) thank you
Thank you! 😘❤️ cheers
Excellent tutorial. One of the best and comprehensible tutorials I've viewed. A great teacher.
Thank you much appreciation, cheers Froyle
Came here to say the same thing. Bravo!
I’m so glad you wiped out something in your black paint. I have an Australian shepherd and he’s with me all the time… fur is unavoidable
FYI Using a Gelli Plate to make "transformative art" is legal and not subject to copyright. Andy Warhol's estate was sued and the case was thrown out due to "Transformative Art" falls under the First Amendment right to free speech as is an expression in the US at least..Andy Warhols famous prints of Cambell's Soup was not an imposter that the average person would not think the print was an actual advertisement from the Cambell's Soup company because of the crazy bright colors transforming the original image into art.
So cool! Thanks, cheers!
I often want to use decoupage from napkins in my art and bought quite a few and then found out i cant use them if i want to sell my art work which was really irritating. Do you think that applies here too?
That is simply not true as using napkins to decoupage something is considered "Transformative" and not subject to copyright as someone who does upcycling I am very sure of te law with regards to copyright and selling my art.@@lyndseyanne4022

I love this technique! 😍 cheers Froyle
@@FroyleArt I just tried it again and it didn't work, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I used a photocopy of an image and placed it on the ink but all the ink came up and didn't leave the image behind. I'm sure I'm missing something but I can't figure what. Sorry for being a pain! 😭
You are the best teacher ever! I’m finally getting a good understanding of the steps for gelli printing. As always, your enthusiasm inspires me. Even my husband is itching to try this! Lol.
Haha! Thank you so much! Cheers Froyle
Your videos are so good, very relaxed and really fun! I have tried a few times to transfer but not much luck! At least you have piqued my interest to try again with your encouragement. I wish I could just take a 24 hr flight to New Zealand and make art together!🤣🤣🤣🤣. Long way from Ontario, Canada!💕🇨🇦
Oh Canada! How beautiful 😍 yes it will be grand when we can travel again! 👍🏼 I have found colour laser copies to work the best!!! Cheers Froyle

Just stumbled upon your channel when looking at how to do transfers onto tissue paper. Wow! Your technique works BEAUTIFULLY! Thank you! I also like how ENCOURAGING you are for someone just learning. You are a GREAT Teacher!!!! (:
Thank you 😘 I absolutely love this technique ❤️ let me know if you have any problems, don’t forget it has to be a colour laser print 👍🏼 cheers
Fabulous I’ve only ever seen monatone printing grest seeing a colour printing
Thanks so much 😊 Cheers Froyle

Nice job ! I will try !
You can also use Thinner to transfert laser printing😉
Happy creating! 😘 Cheers Froyle
Gosh you work cleanly, I seem to be the most untidy with paint drips and finger marks etc...will start using way less paint like you said. Hi from Australia neighbour❤
Hello neighbor! Oh I have to stay semi tidy or I can’t stand it!! 😆😂 I still always use way too much paint!! 😘 cheers!
Oh wow, you make it look so easy 😱 Think beside the callenge of not to much paint... i have many more 🤣 first i have to make some pre-painted rice papers ... or copy .. i was surprised that the paint was still wet enough to make the print. Thank you Froyle ♥️ love this first vid. Will watch the others too cause they are very informative / great lesson ♥️
Happy creating!! 😘 cheers Froyle
WOW!
Thank you! 😘 that is such a fantastic response! 😍 cheers Froyle
Thank you for your detailed demonstrations! I enjoy watching them and your creativity. I am wondering what kind of a print are you starting with for your image transfers? Is it an inkjet print? Also does the printout transfer better in black and white or color? Thank you 😊
I only use laser print copies and I have found colour works better than black & white, cheers Froyle
@@FroyleArt you’ve answered my questions 🎉
Вау! Это круто, я тоже хочу попробовать!
So much fun! 😘 Cheers Froyle
Hi! Thanks for these awesome videos! QUICK QUESTION is there anything you/we can do with the negative image that originally use?
Yes, you can paint over it or stencil on it, use it in collage, cheers Froyle
I hear "Joe Plate" every time. lol
😂😂😂
Gracias por compartir tu trabajo y tus tecnicas.quetia peguntarte que tipo de pintura utilzas..lo he intentado con una acrilica y recorte de revista por no se ha transferido nada.muchas gracias!!❤
Magazines are difficult very hit & miss, I use colour laser copies 👍🏼 acrylic paint, but not too much! Cheers
Wonderful tutorial! Wondering when using a gelli plate could tissue paper work? Just curious. Thank you!
Yes! Tissue paper works fabulous! I’ve been using it recently 😍 ua-cam.com/video/04b1WgOKyCI/v-deo.html
Thank you for this very useful tutorial! Can you tell me what type of paper the laser jet printer uses? I am new to this and have read that it’s not a good idea to use glossy or photo paper on the plate. Thank you for any advice x
Yes that’s right, DON’T use photo paper on your gel plate. I get colour laser prints on standard paper from my local office shop 👍🏼 I have a few videos on this technique so check them out, all the best, 😘 cheers Froyle
Really enjoy your tutorials. Wanting a recommendation on which laser printer to buy. Thanking you in advance.
Hi there, I don’t know which one to buy because I don’t have a home laser printer! I go to an office shop for my prints! 😘 cheers!
WOW! Thank you! Do you think this would transfer onto fabric?
I think it could! 👍🏼 Happy creating! Cheers! 😘
This is awesome! I took a class yesterday where we did image transfers on gelli plates but we used fluid acrylic paint, so it was very thin, and we used images from magazines. Are you using regular acrylic paint?
Yes I have used both successfully, as long as the paint layer is thin, all the best, cheers Froyle
Awesome video! I just found out about this process and new to this. Is it just the special paint that is pulling the image off? It’s so cool. I want to start printing on tee shirts.
Your laser print copy is the most important part, cheers
what kind of color laser printer do you recc? thank you, I think this is the best tutorial
I get my print copies from my local Stationary Warehouse, using the commercial laser printers, cheers Froyle
Very good tutorial. Does it work with photos printed with an inkjet printer? Thank you. Bonjour de France.
No, you need a laser print to work best, cheers
Loved your tutorial, very informative.Where do you get the rice paper from please?
From Amazon! I typed in Chinese rice paper & bought a pack. At the moment I'm using Japanese calligraphy paper - amzn.to/3zvRiQI
great tutoturial. can you please tell me if toy can use any images or do they need to on a particular paper/printer?
Colour laser copy prints work best 👍🏼 cheers
What paper did you use for this transfer?
Thanks for this tutorial!! How do ink jet papers work rather than laser?
No it has to be a laser print copy! 😘 cheers Froyle
Great demo! What kind of paper do you use please?
I love using Chinese rice paper or calligraphy paper, I bought it off Amazon, also white tissue, Cheers Froyle
This is SO FREAKING COOL! THANK YOU! Does it matter if the printed photo is inkjet or laser? Does the type of paper matter for the photo or the sheet you’re transferring to either one?
The print copy is the most important part of the process. This must be a laser copy & I have found colour laser copies to work the best 👍🏼 the paper you pull the print on is not as important 😍 and not too much paint! Cheers
Hi, Froyle! I love your work! And love your laugh, it's very refreshing! I just bought a gelli plate a couple of days ago, wanted to try it but got the flu and wasn't able to do anything other than watch UA-cam videos about how to use it.
I wanted to ask you if textile paints work on gelli plates and if you tried to do laser image transfers onto textile? I'm a little scared to put textile paint on my brand new unused gelli plate :). Have you tried that?
Thanks!
I haven’t tried it yet, but yes I am busting to give it a go!!! The paint should be fine! Happy creating! 😘 cheers Froyle
Thanks! I will try it too! If it works, fine, if not, I'll try it again! :) Cheers from Romania! Love, Diana
Great tutorial, thank you very much for it!
Just a shirt question, i am new to this technique: Does is makes a difference which printer and which printer paper is used? I mean for pictures I want to transfer to the plate? Can you recommend a printer or paper?
I use colour laser copy prints from my local warehouse stationary, I don’t use a home laser printer 👍🏼 cheers
What paper are you using for the print. Great demo!
Chinese rice paper! 👍🏼 cheers
Hello, Wonderful tutorial. What is the royalty free images website you are mentioning? thanks a lot
I like to use unsplash.com although there are a few 👍🏼 happy creating, cheers Froyle
Thank you for this useful vedio.. please I want to ask if those colors are acrylic or wich type?
All acrylic paint, my fav is Liquitex Basics & Golden paints 👍🏼 cheers
Hi - Thank you so much for these classes! I have been trying to do this 2 weeks now and have had no success . Do you know what is the printer brand you are using? I have tried 2 different laser printers and not one transfer has worked.
I get my print copy from The Warehouse Stationary here in NZ, you have to shop around print shops to find the one that works. I tried an online print shop & they failed terribly! Good quality laser print is what you need 👍🏼 cheers Froyle
This is really interesting. Does the print have to be from a LaserJet or will inkjet also work?
Only colour laser copy I have found to work this successfully 👍🏼 cheers
Love the video!
What kind of paper are you using for your prints? Looks almost like wax paper of some sort.
It's Japanese rice paper, but you can use just ordinary copy paper, cheers
@@FroyleArt thanks for the quick response. Just got my Gelli plate today. There’s lots to learn.
Will this work with prints from an ink jet printer or must it be a laser printer? Can I use prints from our local drug store print shop on glossy photo paper or matt photo paper (I don’t have a laser printer). Very informative demo and interesting technique.
It won’t work with an inkjet printer, yes to the prints from your drug store, but NOT on photo paper, this will stick to your gel plate & not come off! Standard copy paper, colour laser print, I have found to work the best! 👍🏼 it’s a fabulous technique, although sometimes it takes a little practice to get it right 😃
What kind of paper are you using? Love your work - beautiful
I should have looked at the other comments 😆 I see you’ve used tissue paper
@@annemohan9958 I also use a lot of Chinese rice paper or calligraphy paper, I buy it from Amazon 👍🏼
Hi do you have a video where you show how you create those colored backgrounds at 02:46? Is it just acrylic paint brushed on paper or did you use the gel plate to make that sort of rounded rectangle frame style? thank you!
Solid colour on the gel plate! Easy peasy! I make a pile of background colours before I start printing the image transfer! Cheers Froyle
@@FroyleArt aah awesome thanks for the reply! :D
I noticed at the very end of this that you mentioned the images were laser printed. I've never seen color images from a laser printer (because I live in the boondocks, lol!). Would this work with an ink jet image? Of course I can always experiment and find out but before making a mess I thought I would ask. :-)
It’s probably not going to work on an inkjet sorry! I get my copies from Warehouse Stationary, so they are a good laser copy & yes, I have found colour to work the best! 👍🏼😘 but you should at least try it! Cheers Froyle
Thank you for this incredible tutorial! I'm wondering what kind of paper you are using to print the pictures on? I tried with standard paper and laser-printer, but it is not working. Could you give an advice?
I get colour laser copies from my local office shop on standard paper. The print copy is very important 👍🏼 cheers
Thank you! I ordered some other paper. The one I have seems to soak too much. It takes the colour on the white and coloured areas. The Gelli Plate is always empty. I try out until I have it!
Thank you! What type of paper are these printed on?
I love using Chinese rice paper, I also use standard copy paper, scrapbooking paper & sometimes Coloured card stock 👍🏼
Just new to Gellie printing but received my gellie plate today and was excited to start. Your tutorials are excellent and very inspiring. Question...I am having no success at all in transferring the laser-printed image onto my pad. I have experimented with the amount of paint, different papers, etc. The images are not transferring. Any ideas as to why?
It will probably be your print copy. It must be a good quality laser print with strong contrast. I get mine printed at a office shop & I have found colour laser prints to work best 👍🏼 happy creating! Cheers Froyle
Like yourself, i’m having zero luck with hi contrast photo copies from staples 🤦🏻♂️
Where can I buy the jelly plates? Also I enjoyed your video extremely well it was excellent
Hi there Christine, what country are you in? Here in NZ you can buy them from Gordan Harris Art Supply, probably Amazon in the USA, you could google it, they are very easy to find, I use the Gelli Arts gel plate, I just love it! 😍
I love your technique and the best part seems to be that there is no wait time for drying. Is this because these are laser prints. I’ve been doing image transfers direct from fashion magazines and have to wait hours for it to dry and then have to use white paint to lift. What do you print these images on before you take it to the copy shop . Are these laser copies expensive?
Bonnie in Wisconsin
I take my photos on a usb stick & they print them onto standard copy paper, colour works best & they cost $1.30 in New Zealand! 👍🏼
@@FroyleArt thank you for the ideas. Love your work.
Great Idea saving images on a USB stick, then taking that to a copy centre/shop. If you don't have a USB stick you can attach your images to an email & ph the copy centre/shop for their address to email it to them. Keep a note of the exact time you sent it, so when you're there they can trace it back & print it off.
If possible support local independent copy/printing shops as they often have specialised machinery not often found in chain stores.
Also they tend to have a bit more time to give detailed advice if you have more complicated copying needs.
@@mymai5859 thank you
Hi Froyle, I love your videos and your work. I made some laser copies at work (school) but they didn't transfer. Any idea why that could be the case?
It will either be the print copy, or the paint. Colour laser prints work the best, not too much paint or it won't transfer! Try looking at these two! Cheers Froyle
@@FroyleArt why would using color laser work better than b/w laser? they are much more expensive, and then you aren't getting the color on the place, correct? thanks
@@jaimiegordon2065 that is just my experience from the office shop copies that I use. My best guess would be because the colour images might have more toner & it is this that resists the paint so it sticks to the gel plate. The white areas absorb the paint & the dark areas leave the paint on the plate 👍🏼 but you should try b/w it might work for you 😘
@@FroyleArt i have been worked on it all day today trying to figure things out a bit better--definitely that layer of paint to transfer the image to plate needs to be smooth and not too thick--more thin, and then the one that pulls it off plate needs to be thicker and more transparent. I also found that if I clean my plate in between to start new image that if it stay the least bit moist, no transfers happen..-also, tried the golden open to just do 1 pull instead of 2 color, and that worked out actually ok...
@@jaimiegordon2065 oh that is just fabulous! And practice!! It just takes a bit of practice to get the amount of paint right! Well done! 👍🏼 all the best with your creative adventures 😘😍
Could you use a hair dryer on low to dry or just wait preferred?
Yes you could use it on cool, not hot, cheers
Just fabulous!! What paper do you use?
This one is Chinese rice paper but I also use a few others, there are links in the description under the video 👍🏼 cheers!
Yes you can use regular copy paper, although I prefer Chinese rice paper or Japanese calligraphy paper because it is softer & more absorbent.
Yes you can use thicker scrapbooking paper, good quality paint is always better for everything! But the amount of paint on the plate is very important, not too much!! That’s the key! 👍🏼 cheers Froyle
Any advice to clean the gelli plate after use ? And also types of paper or materials that work best for printing ? Thanks!!
I just like to use a damp cloth or baby wipes to clean the plate. I use Japanese rice paper or wet strength tissue. You can find info & links under my videos in the description, happy creating! Cheers!
@@FroyleArt Thanks Froyle!! :)
Hi Froyle. Great tutorial. I’m new to gelli plates and was using mine today and it got circular indentations on it and started to smell really bad. I had used some golden high flow fluorescent paint on it and am wondering if that may have damaged it. Any advice? Thanks.
I don’t think that paint would damage it, but it sounds very strange? I don’t know what would have caused that?
@@FroyleArt Turns out the indentations were just from bubble between the plate and the sheet of Mylar. I covered both sides with copy paper and left plate on a hard surface overnight and they’re gone. Smell’s gone too. No idea what that was lol!
@@KirkwoodStudio oh I’m so glad you sorted it! Well done! 👍🏼 cheers Froyle
Hi Janice, fluorescent paint is stinky! The smell will dissipate, though :)
@@feedsfour thanks! I didn’t know that.
Thanks for your great video! When you say ‘paint’, it is printing ink or acrylic paint? Thanks :) (p.s awesome to see this from a fellow Kiwi!)
Acrylic paint! 👍🏼 happy creating! 😘 cheers!
Hey there Froyle, are you using unwaxed lunch wrap to pull the prints - if so do you buy it as A4 precut or do you cut if yourself. I buy rolls and tear it off but would love to buy bulk A4 sheets? thanks Trish
I’m using white tissue! 👍🏼 no lunch roll! 😃
I also love using rice paper! 👍🏼
@@FroyleArt thanks lunch wrap is good but pain cutout up especially when I’m in the mood to play lol.
I saw your work on Instagram and I enjoyed this video your prints are awesome. My problem is I can pull a print but sometimes my images look like they have the measles LOL because there are so many dots I can remove it with a baby wipe but I’m wondering if they are air bubbles. Sometimes after a couple of pulls they’ll go away. But your prints are pristine.
Hi there Diane, thank you for your compliments! Acrylic paint is polymer mixed with pigment, soap is used to bind the pigment, sometimes cheap paint won't have screened out the soap and the paint can become bubbly. So, first look at the paint you are using, then my next suggestion is to check your gel plate. I used make-up wipes once because I ran out of baby wipes, a bad move! The gel plate didn't like this! So maybe there is something on the surface of the plate that is causing the bubbles? I have experienced the bubbles with using magazine pages, so check your prints as well, what are you using? and also, the amount of paint! Too much paint will cause bubbles on the print. I hope one of these ideas helps you, let me know how you go! Cheers Froyle
@@FroyleArt thank you for responding when I start to get bubbles I actually clean my plate with a little soap and water and olive oil and then I cleaned it again. But I think it’s the magazine photos that bubble. Because I’m really good with the amount of paint I put on I learned from lots of trial and error lol I did some copies at a staples copy store, assuming they were laser prints and they did not come out at all. I will have to double check to make sure they are laser. Again thanks for responding your work is gorgeous. And now that you mention it I’m almost positive it’s because of the magazine Prints.
By the way my Instagram is Stamp_8183. May I be so bold to ask lol if you ever have the time to see what you think of my prints. No pressure lol
@@dianecarroll6663 I will definitely have a look 👍🏼
@@dianecarroll6663 I have found coloured laser prints to work every time, but black & white failed, so definitely get colour laser prints, even if your image is B/W
Do you have to first print the image on a laser printer? Can you use a regular jet print color printer like a Canon?
Definitely a good quality laser print, cheers Froyle
Great! But which kind of paper use ?
Colour laser copy on regular paper printed onto Japanese rice paper 👍🏼 cheers!
