Peter Banks luminous, dazzling fretwork, one incredible hook after another, impassioned vocals. stellar all the way around. They should have been bigger than they were.
@zappatx - Tony Kaye was still in Yes when Flash was being formed. Flash had another keyboard player lined up who pulled out just as they were about to record their first album. Tony agreed to do the sessions as a favor. In the meantime, Jon A. had suggested another great keyboard player for Flash, Rick Wakeman. He decided to take his own suggestion - he parted ways with Tony and acquired Rick.
I remember hearing this song on WXRT in Chicago when I was a little kid. A couple of years ago I heard the American Top 40 with Casey Kasem, from August 26, 1972, and this song was on it. I hadn't heard the song since I was little, and when I heard it on that one show, it brought back so many memories!

I actually saw these guys in an outdoor concert in NYC in about 1972 or 73. They opened for Argent, (and another band whose name escapes me at the moment) and Jeff Beck, the headliner, who was extremely late showing up. I had seen Yes in their first American tour (they opened for King Crimson and Procol Harum [headliner]---what a show!) so I was curious to see how Flash performed. I think I liked them (ha, I was probably tripping). The highlight of the night was when Rod Argent came on stage. He said: "Some of you may have seen us here last year. Well, we're better now". Guys Sherrynoland took the time to get back with me so check out the live band rehearsal its well worth a look. Lets hope they tour again. I know I would go see them.
exactly. talked about but seldom heard. even I forgot how much the guitar rocks. AM radio is mostly where I heard it, so I was hearing a chopped up track .for ads. big Summer hit in '72. I didn't hear it for decades, 'til YT.
Hello to ALL that said "sounds a lot like YES." DUH. Especially a lot like the ....1st two albums? DUH-ble DUH! Peter Banks was the guitarist on those albums. In fact, he came up with the name YES! HAd all 3 Flash albums, all water damaged in 1998...BOO-F'in-HOO!
Saw these guys in summer of 72' with Heep in Charlotte NC. Such beginnings full of promise but sadly were only a flash on the music scene.
If not for KCDX I never would have stumbled on this cool tune!
I love all the trilogy of thia Amazing Band...I have all the records and in cd too.
Peter Banks one of my favorite guitar players.
Yes but Steve Howe playing is more fluid than Banks playing. And I have respect for Banks, but he was definitely not good as Howe.
@@corkydemoen910 Of course, but Banks has his own special style, as much as Howe
RIP Peter Banks. Discovered you late, but your music will live on!
I don't hear any organ, and the interview I just saw Pete said he couldn't get Tony to join.
Tony should have. He got the sack a year later lol.
This was one of the true classics of that era. Everything in this song works, all instruments, vocals. Performed to perfection. This rivals most by Yes. One of my favorites.
u know how i found this song on YT? I found an olddddddd K-tel record (all scratched up, of course) and searched the tracks here to listen.....pays not to throw away the ol' vinyl!
There is a single version of the longer album cut. It is three minutes (and something), and got a lot of airplay when it was released in '72.
Check out the new Flash CD, "Flash Featuring Ray Bennett & Colin Carter" (Cleopatra Records, 2013) As for "one hit wonders", having even ONE hit in prog rock means you're one of the very best!
Flash Facebook page - FlashFeaturingRayBennettColinCarter
I dig that. I believe they were pretty sincere in what they did.
Which one? Ray Bennett and Colin Carter ARE in action. Flash is now on Cleopatra records with a new CD due to be release March 2013.
The guitar riff kind of reminds me of Pinball Wizard by The Who.
Was just thinking the same thing
R.I.P. Peter Banks
WRKO playlist... love it!
thank you sooo very much for this uploadification!
great song, but along with Starcastle, Flash, sounds strikingly a lot like YES.
great music
is this available on CD?
Tony was a friend and session player on the first FLASH album, but never joined the band.
You can hear "Children of the Universe" on myspace under flashbennettcarter
all I've ever heard was the short version, thanx for posting...maybe I'll find the full length version of LOVE IS LIKE OXYGEN...that would just about make my day...
Alot sharper than Yes, sorry to all Yes fans but Flash had the upper hand in the progress of the way forword
They just didn't have the same "girl" appeal that Yes had and Squire's bass is very hypnotizing ...but Pete Banks had a vibe for sure
hi keon, but they did have sharper tunes. yes got abit stale for me, wereas flash were more exiting aspesially live.
wow cool
Keon Crosswell Ha! I married one of them (Ray) long after they split up, Keon, and from the stories I've heard, girls weren't a problem, except maybe too many. Nice looking guys with tight pants who could play the shit out of their instruments. I mean, really. If they had booted Banks like Yes did and carried on instead of breaking up, we might have been listening to them all these years. Fact is, Ray and Colin have reunited Flash, finally! and have a new CD (2013 Cleopatra Records). Check it out. "Flash Featuring Ray Bennett & Colin Carter"
sherrynoland P.S. No denying, Pete was a terrific guitar player. But, unfortunately, impossible.
