Watching Zack (Jery rig everything) pull apart the XT was a hard watch 😂 But it did answer a few questions such as all three panels having a battery, this is because like the latest Honor (Huawei) phones it uses a silicon carbon 1.9mm thick battery.
1. Design. 4 Out of this world but they should have prioritized battery design 7000mah should be the least on this phone 2. Build quality...3 No sand/dust resistance ( i can excuse water resistance They need to look into reinforced polymers like Kevlar, fibre glass or even carbon fiber for extra rigidity. Based on Jerryrigs test ....it's too thin it might just break by looking at it 3. Software. 4.8 I believe the best ui implementation for fold devices is open canvas/ boundless view by oneplus/ oppo They solved multitasking (and from experience , 3 apps is optimal) I seriously do not mind degoogling myself. Or using web apps 4. Camera. 4.5 It's adequate 5. Price. 3 It's the first attempt, but price can come down I know it has all accessories which can amount to more than 500 dollars. Total score. 19.3
I completely agree with your scoring even if it cant be placed in any category rn. Ppl that buy that phone are looking for an all in one technology platform not perfect in everything but able to perform decent scoring in all activities without being the best in anything out of that it is made for (multitasking). So for me it has the merit of being the first of it's kind and for that it is currently an amazing start and any other company ll have really hard work to compete with that mobile.
Huawei stands as a true pioneer in mobile phone innovation. Despite facing significant restrictions, including a ban imposed by the United States aimed at supporting Apple by attempting to hinder Huawei's growth, they have consistently pushed the boundaries of creativity and technology in mobile development. Remarkably resilient, Huawei continues to rise, reaching levels of innovation that few can rival. Their relentless commitment to advancing technology is evident as they introduce groundbreaking inventions, establishing themselves as leaders in fields where others have yet to tread.
Spot on review- really just echoes your day 1 review- wait 1 more year for a more robust phone of this class. This year was to drum up interest in the form factor but there is still much work to be done.
I think this review is very good and helpful. As you said, it's a first Gen so Huawei are already ahead of the curve and their tri-fold products will develop and improve. But if there would ever be any chance of me considering this kind of device the price would have to significantly drop and I mean by over half. Not so sure that day is anywhere near. And just to add, I'm still using my P30 Pro and I still love it, but I do think you'll be seeing my business soon Mike 👍
I'm curious, would you prefer a glass external screen and the plastic folding screen to be folded like a mailing letter similar to other phones? Concerned about durability?
It is always nice to get an honest and straight to the point review from AD. Maybe one day we will see Samsung release a trifold, but I am sure they will cheap out on hardware when they do. I know they are working on a roll out device.
I was hoping that you would show the stylus in the review. I understand being worried about the durability, but if it was an issue they wouldn't bother putting a digitizer in. Of course it only works with the M Pen 2s designed for the Mate X lineup (which I assume has a softer, less pointier tip than the M Pencil they use on tablets?)
This is by far thr best review on this phone. I swear no one knows this phone better. Would you consider reviewing a a leica leitz phone 3. It seems like an interesting phone.
Could you do a software review video for the foldables? And rate the Chinese ROMs against each other (Honor, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Oppo) out of 5? And then do the same for all the Global ROMs against each other? Doesn’t have to be super in-depth just a quick and dirty comparison.
Dead nuts honest as usual Mike, i love.the thing but rarely jump on wst gen anything lol. As you said no.doubt others will follow and will have native google, 5g (does this have 5g?) Amd be more cost conscious. Im.betting xiaomi releases the next one
I would maybe consider a version of this that folded in to protect the inside screen even though a second screen would be needed but it would definitely be more durable
What happens when your foldable screen cracks? Do I send such device to you? Samsung just changes the screen. What would happen with something like Honor Magic V3 bought from your store?
Your reviews was about right. I can not get over the screen being on the outer edge of the fold. If you are putting this in and out of your pocket this will not last long and the screen will scratch and wear out. Love the tech but I think the rollable screen will be good also if not better and I would like to see a production version of this out .
I be honest, I will very scare to cross zebra crossing. I scare the car won't stop. I just be very honest. 😂😂😂😂😂You buy it and you have to take the risk. No point of buying it when you scare of demand it. 😂😂😂😂
You know, knowing all the warning signs about this phone, I thought about it and I said to myself. If I could get this sucker to work for 24 months, that’s just fine. And then all the sudden it just totally broke one day. I would be fine with it. But as long as I could get 24 good months out of it. And then two years from buying it, I know the second addition will be out and will be way stronger.
In my humble opinion I believe with all my heart Samsung paid a few reviewers in China, to put bad reviews on this fold. Knowing they've not been innovating like this in year's! Trust me .those types of things happen all the time.
In my humble opinion I belive with all my heart Huawei paid a ton of bots to post glowing comments under any video mentioning the XT. And while it's absolutely is an innovation, it's still behind in a whole bunch of fields because of the sanctions. I applaud Huawei for their struggle but I'm not purchasing their products.
I absolutely agree with the software issues... I have a magic V2 and it is a complete nightmare to use... wouldn't trust this phone with any personal information or account passwords, I basically use this phone for entertainment purposes only and we'll wait for the V4 to come out.... unless honor also comes out with the tri-fold phone that I "maybe" will look at that
Yup, no idea why he's undersold the camera. I have the s24 ultra, one plus open, oppo x7 ultra and Vivo x100 pro... Also I have the Huawei XT. The XT is a brill camera...4 out of 5 and it really holds its own in most of pics n vids. Something isn't quite right with this review. Ben's gadget, and MKBHD both called the XT a "flagship camera"....AD got this all wrong...
He was fair actually... Go watch Jerryrigeverything destroy this phone. No sand and dust resistance is a NO NO for a foldable phone. It's chipset is 5 years behind ( but it's manageable ) Battery needs to be atleast 7000mah must be very much optimized.

@freetheworld247 I watched JRE video before Average Dad's review. All the points you've highlighted are valid, I am fully aware that this is a very fragile device, and I expected no other outcome other than what happened in JRE's video. The reason I said AD was harsh is because this phone is like no other - you've gotta appreciate the tech and AD knows the device better than any other UA-camr out there.

Hmm I don't think its fair to compare the durability and cameras of a trifold to normal foldables. It like comparing the cameras of the first foldable to a candibar phone. The restrictions around the design is different. I also think that "build quality " is not the same as durability. Maybe you should consider adding a durability category (and a battery life and performance category as well). I understand that you want to keep the comparison standards the same, but it does not make much sence because the device is being penalized for being a pioneer.
I disagree - durability is durability. As he says, he is comparing across the market as a whole. Durability of a 1 item market would automatically give it a 5 as it is the best of the only bifold phone - and that would be misleading
I think your review was very fair, it is a first gen product of it's type, and it comes with all of the negatives of being that. This doesn't mean as a concept it doesn't have a bright future and I expect future bi-fold devices will get better and better (and hopefully cheaper and cheaper).
Hats off to Huawei for pushing the boundaries, we seem to see jealous UA-camrs when it comes to this device just because Samsung haven't bought something like this to the market
