- Continuing my project to transcribe the bass lines on the recent Special Consensus albums - 2nd track on Chigaco Barn Dance. It’s the rabbit hole I fell into after seeing them at the Bluegrass Heritage Festival in march ‘23.
This is one wacky tune, the chords hang out a ton on the iii chord and the IV chord. The phrasing overlaps so there aren’t real clear A, B, C, etc. sections - and the parts you’d think are the same at first glance actually have a measure or two difference, or a twist to the chords. It’s actually a pretty complicated arrangement, though it seems simple(ish) at first glance.
Lots of percussive dead notes/grace notes, which it seems like a hallmark of Dan Eubanks playing. We’ll see if that proves out as I work on transcribing the rest of the album.
Audio and song are not my copyright, the notation would be mine.

Let me know if I can answer any questions, thanks for taking the time, I’m honored that you would.
I just found this comment... one of these days I'll figure out how to work UA-cam on the channel side (where's my facepalm emoji when I need it?).
It's on my to-do list to transcribe the little filler solos you do on the live versions to fill while the guitar and banjo move their capos... I don't know if it's easy to catch in this video but I put "(sneaky key changes are sneaky)" over the first one. I was about 8-12mm in after the first change and that section was driving me nuts until I went and got my bass. I had been judging the intervals off the old tone center. Normally key changes are pretty obvious but y'all do a good job of camouflaging them here.
And happy B-day!
