- A barely-used, $1.3 million paving machine that a homeless man had been using as shelter was back on the road Friday, just days after a CBS2 News' report.
How many street workers does it take to calibrate a paving machine? A dozen or so to stand around and watch a guy with a shovel wack the million dollar machine.
BadGovinArk They must have a government employee union. Leaning on shovels is a time-honored union work practice.
These jackass city officials kill me 😂
That is a top of the line recycler. The only problem is the City of LA got caught and rounded up guys not trained on that machine and they do not know how to adjust it. It appears it was sitting for a year, it probably also needs a thorough servicing. You cannot take a Ferrari out of the garage after sitting for a year and expect it to run properly.
They've never seen a machine like that in Mexico before, that's why nobody in the City of LA knows how to operate it.
You mean to tell me that government can't use common sense? Knock me over with a feather. You get what you vote for, California.
No. It’s California.
i used to have one of these. they require much more wood from a neighbor to work.
w here LoL!!!
so youre a millionaire?
Lol
The owners manual actually specifies 4 pieces of neighbor sourced firewood.
w here xaxaxaxaxaxa
Thank You for actual reporting, so important right about now.
City workers just standing around?shocking
We have those machines in NYC. They are really good at doing the repaving of the messed up NYC streets after the hard winters here. Those people just don't know how to work the machine. I hope they don't blame the manufacturer and stop using it and go back to the old ways of wasting money with slower machines.
Complicated machines seem like junk to those who don't know how to use them. With something like this I'm guessing maintenance is very important. Knowing what everything does, and keeping all the parts cleaned and lubed is the first battle, after that it's gonna take some time and playing with things before developing technique and skill. It will be a very expensive at first but once in full production it could be the city's new favorite tool.
Jon Doe Yup
Wirtigen machines are some of the most elite in the industry. My company uses their milling machines, and we run equally awesome vogele pavers
These are in fact asphalt recycling machines, not hot mix machines, so someone acquainted with the normal paving process wouldn't automatically know how to use one. These machines do have minor breakdowns from time to time, but in this case id say its either from opporator error or sitting for so long that something small malfunctioned.
This a new machine, it takes time to work out the kinks I'm sure. Don't fucking blame the city guy please. This reporter is a douche bag looking for a story that just isn't there
Lol city official with his nice expensive ferraegamo belt, i bet this dude pockets so much cash from all this fraud and abuse occurring this is ridiculous
Noahsgood Just wait until the pension kicks in.
I SAW THAT TOOOOO LMFAOOOOO
K Vogel he’s gonna be wearing Gucci and Prada when that pension kicks in
That's who we need here in Chicago. A reporter like him that gets to the bottom of things and puts pressure on the city politicians.
Awesome job David!!!
You might be thinking, "hey, that's a pretty nice machine, but did that really cost nearly $1.5 million?" Well, the machine cost $400k and the bureaucracy around it cost $1.1 million.
idk, your bog standard tractor runs up a good half mil, I can fully believe something like that costs a clean kk
@melhupby ummm, no. Your average tractor costs around 30-60k brand new from a third party dealer
Nah that machine is over a mil new
@@xedrickOG come on kid, only backyard tractors cost that much… maybe a used hobby farm one from the 70s. Farming row tractors START at $250,000, for good-value brands. High end ones are much higher.
Most are thinking Wirtigen recyclers cost quite a bit over a million dollars. Mainly because Wirtigen recyclers cost quite a bit over a million dollars.
The bureaucratic BS is that it isn’t being utilized. Don’t speak on which you don’t know
They're so incompetent about a paver, now realize that they are also in charge of everything else.
I'M NOT SLEEPING ON THE JOB I'M CALIBRATING!
Funny
I hope the Homeless Guy is ok.
also, i don't understand, why the city doesn't admit defeat and perhaps try to get a expert out and show at least some workers on how to operate it Correctly
This is Outrageous !
Good! Glad to sre the news holding local administration accountable, exactly what we need!
Accountability.
I think those dudes has no clues how operates that machine at all 🤦🏻♂️
Of course not. They probably received no training because the city's scrambling to cover its ass.
Keep up the great work David...
Good reporting!!!!
Thanks David.
This is called Waste, Fraud and Abuse.
AKA Los Angeles
Explain?
phill...what happens is the sales rep who makes a 150k commission on the machine hands the guy from the city 30k for having the city buy all the expensive new stuff and then nobody knows how to use it and it sits around until someone calls them out like this
Do we know this is what happened?
dollar...you dont take a helocopter out solo your first time either...youll die...you o with trainers...same with new equip...you take reps from manufacturer or supplier out to have them train staff....not rocket science...in a rush to try and cover their asses they made fools out of themselves
Did anyone bother to get trained on this high tech machine?
Why waist tax payer dollars on training people on a machine they are never going to use ??
They identified which end is front.
The standing around and wood from a neighbor say it all.
Great investigating, real reporting here.
The legend said the Homeless man came to show how the machine work.
"That's your view."
No, that's common sense!
✌❤🌎
I don’t know why these new clips from 4yrs ago is popping up in my feeds now but.. 😍 I love them!! Way to go Goldstein!! 🔍💕!! They should do more in 2022!
Technology and automation is supposed to replace labor right? so why was there 20 workers there?
Testing stage? The engineer should've tested it before they bought it
If you've been around any heavy equipment it only does the job as good as the humans who program/operate/maintain it.
Unions...
bpj6422 the concept of unions is great but in practice its nepotism and dumb policies that maintain the status quo. Running a small sawmill your profits are directly tied to how much work and thinking you put in to avoid having your people and equipment breaking down
Youd be suprised how this actually works. I'm a union road worker. Between inspectors, superintendents, safety guys, compaction testers, project managers, and other random people who look in their book to tell you how to do your job- there end up being more people on the job that dont touch a tool or machine, and dont work for the union or contractor, than people who are actually doing the paving. When you see a bunch of guys standing around on a paving job, you can rest assured that if there is asphalt there and the machines are running then those dudes standing around are not laborers or opporators.
It's California that's all you need to know
Good work CBS! Bad for equipment to sit dormant like that. They will not be able to calibrate unless it is used and the operators become familiar with it. Should of found an abandoned mall or factory parking lot to practice on vs a real street though. But getting it out and powered up is the first step.
What an idiotic purchase. No one purchases a piece of equipment that isn't proven. That's for the research and development of the company that makes the piece of equipment. What a sham.
Have you seen the rent for street pavers? Surprised he could afford it. Instead of sleeping under a cheaper machine.
Best journalist i have seen in a while.
Shame on you David for making those guys to actually work.
has there been a follow up on this?
Do a FOIA request for the testing plan.....
California : where the jokes on you
WHAT A JOKE !! 20 FOOLS MAKING 50+ AN HOUR .
KEEP VOTING DEMOCRAT!!!
How about no. They fucked us over to begin with and are the party of the real racists that treat minorities like pets and accessories.
Pretty sure that is exactly what he meant by writing that. As in keep being idiots and vote dem.
Keep voting for the party of MOONBEAM and MAD "IMPEACH" MAXINE!
Commifornia will sink into the Pacific!!!
And people want to give more money to the government.
DosWheelsBetter Actually, they just want their cut.
16 people to stand around while one guy drives it. That's probably around $800 dollars an hour labor cost, figuring in workman's comp. Insurance and associated costs. Or more ?
Another joke. Your money. And he needs to be fired. In a very public way.
They should've been trained to operate this piece of equipment, otherwise they are wasting tax payer money and sitting around like fools.
That director should be fired!
Real news!!!
If you guys would just tax people more then they could hire someone that knows what they're doing right? :p
Joel Don't give them any ideas, LOL.
It is not a paver. It is a Wirtgen Asphalt milling machine. F-in press is soooo thick some times.
$300k for the machine...
$1 Million for training 🙄
They need some retraining on the system to make it really cost effective.
Which LA City bureaucrat got the kickbacks for buying that machine?
Worker 1 “Guys i don’t know what’s wrong it’s not working.”
Worker 2 “hit it with a shovel”
1 hour later
Worker 1 “it stopped again guys
Worker 2 “I’ll get the shovel”
"Back on the road af" ? 😁😂
why the man ublic sector mans wearin a ferragamo belt lmao
LMFAOOOOOO
That 1.3 million could have been used for 30 full scholarships for engineering students to design a better paving machine. .
Trey Thornton-Griggs They just give all the money to students who would be better off learning a useful trade.
Those poor guys probably didn't any training on the machine
hmm $1.3M for a piece of equipment no one uses? sounds like somebody got a nice kickback for that contract....
scamming out the Mansion.
I hate seeing these poor workers be made to look like shit, They're just trying to feed their families.
That’s why they should just bid the work out.
He’s living under other city machinery
Why was this recommend to me?
it looks like the road crew needs to be trained to use the paving machine, because it looks like they have no clue how to run it. lol
So much cheaper to allow competitive bidding between contractors who are professional and experienced in the paving business. This is proof of how taxpayers money is wasted by " In House " government services.
my city has two or 3 of those
News reporters aren't engineers
that gobierno guy probably got 50k cash and a weekend with the teenage daughter of whoever sold the city that thing.
for a million plus it should calibrate itself
How can a government official barely speak english lmao
we elected a president who has the vocabulary of a 4th grader, so a bi lingual government employee is not far fetched.
it is California
Too many Americans at Wal-Mart and not in college...we HAVE to outsource! SMH
California..
Khazar Milkers people vote for them. Where have you been?
So sad they are tearing people from their homes. We can't just kick homeowners to the streets!
So that's where my paver 2000 went. That homeless guy stole it....
So the dude lost his million dollar home
Waste of money smh
Good job David make the city work for your tax payers money!
I need to find me a city job to make money doing nothing!
They should hire the guy who's been sleeping under it -he may be able to get it running!
:-)
In CT we have huge companies with those machine's who's screwing who
Caladration wtf?
Thats a Milling machine which grinds to the depth wanted.
A Paving machine is something entirely different..
Now call up the Operating Engineers local in the area and Hire PROFESSIONAL machine operators and mechanics 👍👍
LMAO they have no idea how it works
So to show that they aren't wasting money, they waste even more. Keep voting for big government, California.
Just a thought: you should have dates on your videos, not only the time & temperature. Why? Dates can matter. The guy getting interviewed is about to retire.
Those streets didn’t need it.. go to the main blvds
The best part is the machine didn't even cost that much. A million dollars got lost in city government paychecks lol
Sounds like buddy bought a fucking lemon and doesn't want to admit it. I love it when the bosses buy equipment you don't need.
Yes yes, very good but what about Martha?
She lives on Plymouth Boulevard and mid-Wiltshire and didn't want to give her last name; has she managed to keep her identity secret?
LMAO RIP THE BOSS. HE GOT ROASTED!
Now the homeless man is homeless again
why not outsource to someone competent?
Silly Villy No opportunity for graft.
Homeless guy was driving it!! Employment and use of machine.
Typical city bone head move.... Instead of actually having a representative come out from the company they bought the paver from. They have 10-15 city workers come out and stand around cause no one can properly work the machine..
OH COME ON NOW MR GOLDSTEIN !!!
the silly thing has been sitting around little used since 2018 ,and YOU expect it to run right out of box after a bout of idleness??
As for the men standing around , they probably forgot how to efficiently operate it ,Plus they could have genuinely lost the owners operating manual!!!
PLEASE , give it a little time for everyone to get their act together!!
Till then , keep it the good work keeping our public work honest !!😊
Idiots wow that machine needs an engineer
I am looking for a Job!! I can read the manuals :)
I guess they should order the instruction manual in Spanish...
ya it might need some cabrating but with 56 hours on the metert you mean to tell me no one sprint time calibrating it at all some of thow setting are set onec and not chang fro at lest 1000 hours or more and even at and houer a mile you mean to tell me it only pave 51 mile of road look more like no one bin tand to use the thing and ther for the 5 oers of that tag are probe the moving time from lot to lot and spot to spot plus the start up from time to time to keep fluid moving
They need to hired young ppl who are good with technology?
Darkmatter solo That's not how unions work.
No wonder they lack the brain cells to work this high tech machine
but.....but......but it will save money.....LOL
Ya.... Im going to want to see the follow up story of this machine doing what its suppose to be doing. I think they bought a 1.3 million dollar sucker!!
In the mean time some homeless man lost his 1.3 million dollar home.
I agree this was a complete waste of money and the money could have gone to other things like schools, but it costed the taxpayer less than $1 so it wasn't that much of a kiss for the taxpauer
ask other city that have and use that type of paving it does not work or last and the type of streets in LA are wrong for it use to start with we idea is great but it does not work
Could have helped a lot of people with one million dollars.
Well, I don't know about "A LOT" of people. but 1.3m would certainly would help a lot more people than that thing has been.
You're right, like actually paving the roads for taxpayers.
Yeah, like repainted Maxine Waters' Beverly Hills mansion
