Finally a California news agency has reported on this dangerous situation, we have the same issue here in SF Bay Area including in Sacramento. Highway 80 has over 100 lights out including along major bridges. another thing is roads aren’t repainted nor have the correct reflectors. This last winter it was dangerous to drive on the freeways.

As a Californian I've seen my state and its cities become toothless in prosecuting crime. Can't have nice things in a lawless or broken society. You can't keep blaming Caltrans for what the thieves do. It's impossible to catch up. The thieves will break open the covers, usually between two points, cut the wires, then yank it all out to sell it. Recycling and salvage centers are also to blame. When homeless dudes come in every so often with a ton of wire, they buy it. Where do they think they got it from? It's a nationwide problem. Payment for scrap should be delayed a month, where the sellers need to provide ID where everything is recorded in a federal database.

I see lot freeway signs make people drive like a manic trying to exit or change to take that route since there wasn't not much early warning signs for them. That why driving in freeway I have to watch out for those that don't know where they going as they either tend to drive slow or upset.

It has become impossible to drive at night in LA. Its so dangerous no one can see anything and unless you have it memorized where you are going which most tourists do not and get lost and cause so many accidents. There has been an increase in accidents on all the freeways in LA over the last 3 years. They need to make boxes that kill you if you attempt to open them. This is a serious problem and the people who live here are forced to endure risking their lives due to it. FIX THE PROBLEM already we are sick of it.

Isn't great to live in a lawless state. Cost of living through the roof in democrap California, and literally can't even keep the lights on...

Sounds like those areas need to be closed until brought back up to safe working order. Who is going to be responsible for any mishaps.

I think commiting wire vandalism on public streets and highways should be a felony. As we need those lights to see where we are driving so it is to not cause risk of damage to property or someone. The car's front headlights are not enough when some dumbass decides to speed down a dark street and don't see a pedestrian crossing the street ahead of them in time.

We pay triple fuel taxes just for these repairs. And Newsom missuses them.

I've seen towns and cities in the US with BLACKLIGHT PURPLE colored streetlamps- they all slowly fail and go from white to uv-blue. The LED manufacturer F'd up... or really likes raves.

Downtown Los Angeles appears as though it has been struck by a catastrophic explosion! It's incredibly not looking good these days. The absence of illuminated freeway lights is truly disheartening. Why is this the case? Let's cease the constant justifications blaming homelessness it's not! The solution is rather straightforward, new leadership! It's time for a much-needed change! The individuals occupying the same positions continuously yield the same lackluster outcomes-absolutely nothing! We must remove the ineffective MM2 and his associates. The Los Angeles supervisor should be relieved of their duties, particularly since their area is the epicenter of these issues. It's high time they are held accountable and questioned regarding their actions!

Leftist California govt. officials have insisted on encouraging criminality by not prosecuting criminals, or by handing out soft sentences, even for repeated offenses.
I moved out of California in 1974. I was seeing things then I did not like. But could not have predicted this mess and so many others now in Calif.

Unbelievable that those two are still on the air broadcasting. ❤ Just checked to see how everything is coming along in preparation for Hilary. I used to watch them in the 80's till I moved out of state in 2010.

Sure, it's CalTrans fault that scumbags are stealing copper.
I'd get tired of fixing them too.
BTW, there are these cheap devices that use the GPS system to tell you where to turn.

Serial number the wires, Require ID for sellings, setup surveillance cameras with night vision on the access boxes triggered by movement; More secure access panels.
    And prosecute criminals

This story has more core issues than it appears. Currently the entire USA is on the edge of the cliff to have an economic crisis due to national debt. Regardless of this, the government keeps draining the budget with sending tons of tax money to Ukraine (one of the corrupted post soviet union country) for no reason (just to show Russia how strong we are). In here the high and middle classes wouldn't feel more difference, while poor people are in more struggle for keeping their families. And believe me, police is impossible to find this type of thieves, because everyone in low class is potentially is a case.

The biggest of those boxes broken into might yield just a few dollars worth of copper wire at a recycler, maybe 6 or 7 dollars worth max. A small box might only have 2 to 3 dollars worth.
