In today's video I want to talk you about something that I like to call: "Creative Research"
The main concept is to think in zones of the fretboard associating chords and scales and the only theory that you need to know is that chords are extracted from scales.
You can choose any scale, extract a group of notes and find a chord that works over that scale. The idea is to play a line and then tie it to a chord shape.
An absolute master of this type of playing was Jimi Hendrix!

    Just finally
Ive been playing guitar for 10 years and everytime i tried to learn notes or how people do that fancy stuff. I always get frustrated or bored. But you sir. You sir have set me up with the ultimate teaching lesson which was neither boring nor frustrating. I really appreciate it.

hey that's a really cool lesson. Shows you don't need to know what the chord name is... just where notes that sound good together are hiding (in plain sight) in a certain scale pattern. Very useful technique. Thanks for demonstrating it. Great lesson.

This is awesome! I really appreciate your approach, especially highlighting the importance of finding one's own voice. This is truly what it's all about. So many teachers on UA-cam want to teach you a "rock lick" or a note per note solo and I just hate all of that! I don't want to mimic anyone else except maybe a few of my favorite songs to cover. I want to find my own voice and develop it.

I’m still confused on just what chord goes with whatever fragments you were exampling. Like most songs I know to play are using mostly major chords with a minor in there somewhere and it’s making me wonder if there is a dumb down pattern I can play as lead accompaniment or overlaying melody. Nothing too complex but plenty of room for soothing uniqueness...? Thankyou im groovin on all this food for thought I can absorb at my own-pace but open my fretboard up alittle more to noodling.
I know my creativity will improve once I understand what note will be smooth with what set of chords which may be in any multitude of orders. I hope I said all that right🤔

David ____ All minds do not work at the same capacity for understanding. I am unable to find the sound I am looking for with, 'Pentatonic, or 'Caged... I can hear, and find the, 'Tonic of everything I hear at 6 different places. So I concentrate on, Modes', keeping in mind the 'semi-tone intervals' between B&C / E&F, and the degrees therein of 'Series, and Parallel ... the rest is just instinctive 'Noodling. What do you recommend?

  • @sphinx9517
    @sphinx9517 2 роки тому

Is this A Dorian scale? The reason I ask is do you always think I’m modes or say would you just keep it in your head that it’s G Ionian. My problem is I relate everything back to G Ionian or E Aeolian and I play mindless notes instead of melodic notes.

Since keys are just pitch..if you know the fret board in C MAJOR/ A minor.
You know you can barr straight across the 5th . 10th and 12 fret.
The notes will be in A min. D minor or E minor pentatonic...
In other words....if you play in B minor...you can also let all the notes RING OPEN
    at the NUT...
Expand on the idea....of playing in other keys.
Example..let say you play in E MAJOR.....The E and B are perfect 5th. The A is the perfect forth. You can let the 4 outside strings ring open..
You just have to pretend the NUT is at the 8th fret..
Play the notes on the D and G strings accordingly...you can make simple chords or
diads...chord less the ROOT and DRONE off the Open strings...ect
ON PAPER it'll look WICKAGE..because the notes are SPREAD OUT and note NOT
going EVERY OTHER NOTE.....YOU"RE NOT on the PIANO...
PIANO PLAYER has a hard time with OPEN CHORDS VOICING.
or when the arpeggios arnt always stacked EVERY OTHER NOTE
MAKE the PIANO PLAYER....ADJUST to you...or rather...dont write your music
on a guitar for a piano or around the piano.
You can make a lot of beautiful sounding chords
and different melodies will spring from it...
You can also expand on this concept....
DONT CHANGE the Melodic to fit the chords....Rather. change the chords to
to fit the melody. The parallel keys/scales....will make more sense to you.
When you VAMP/sub chords/axis pitch...you're basically changing the chords....
if you play in F Major or D minor..You can play all the note open except the B string.
Just pretend the NUT is the 8th fret...or just place a finger on the F note B string.
Pretend the 5th fret is the NUT.
as a reference. You can let the rest of strings ring open...it's a beautiful chord.
Use the guitar fretboard to your advantage. Know the instrument's pros and cons.
