Sufjan Stevens has made music about historical events, roadways -- even serial killers. But his latest project, electro-pop album "The Age of Adz" (pronounced "odds"), is an inward-focused project dealing with the primal side of themes like love and death. Plus, there's a whole cosmic thing going on too. Before back-to-back concerts in Prospect Park next month, he joins us to perform live in the studio.

He made himself cry with his own song. I felt that on a personal level.
wheres the original? lol was it a tumblr comment?
That's true,I wonder who he was thinking about
clickbait in 2020 STILL AS POWERFUL AS EVER
I saw him on his 2015 Carrie & Lowell tour, and after every song he wiped the tears from his eyes and started the next song. I've never seen anything like it before.
I made myself cry by imagining a fake scenario before I went to sleep
The cute, slightly embarrassed face he makes at the end after he was clearly about to cry just fills my heart with so many emotions.
Matthew Zehner It is beautiful isn't it. He has a purity of spirit.
Yeah I think he s been through a lot
generic [im not gay but]

2:20
I've never really looked at Sufjan Stevens face (too busy listening to his music), but today....today, whoa! This man is physically beautiful and dreamy.
+Piper Draconi As a staunch heterosexual, I have no problem admitting that's he's a ridiculously handsome man.
+Piper Draconi yeah he really is a beautiful person
He doesn't really smile often but he has a beautiful smile, too.
Is he gay? Cuz he makes all good music
AOB . 😂😂
He made his own gay ass cry with his gay ass song i love him
I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS COMMENT
FOR YEARS
Omg
@@jangentiles1585it’s been 5 years now 😭😭 do you still listen to this song or sufjan in general.
i want to find this gay ass comment with my gay ass
gosh his voice is so soft. When I'm laying in bed in the dark and listen
intensly to Sufjan, I always feel safe. I adore this man so much.
this comment is so lovely.
this...is one of the most relatable an d best things ive ever read.
💓🌸🍃
Im laying in bed in the dark listening to sufjan Stevens
i adore him too. he's beautiful
The camera should get closer angles I can't see the pores of their skin enough.
i agree. They have no wrinkles
😂😂😂😂 that made me laugh out loud
I’m gonna come.
I love Sufjan with all of my heart no hetero though
Cracked me up
I have watched this man rub his eye, sniff, and smile probably about 200 times by now. It just makes me feel ok. Emotions are important, Sufjan reminds me of that.
Yes
Coming back to Suf's music after hearing about how his partner died really breaks my heart... How can life through so much at someone like him.
2:19 that feeling of crying and then feeling silly and then feeling good
BECAUSE THIS SONG IS SO INTENSE AND DEEP
my beautiful boy my special boy
//.,,,Me...
:’)
the close ups are real
+Angelo Antonopoulos Seriously, they're like, "Let's frame it so you just see forehead down to chin, maybe less if that seems too far away"
That made me laugh so hard.
sadjan stevens made a song so sad he made himself tear up :')
@Alex Paul i know what i said lol
Is it just me or is he really beautiful?
he really is 😭
HIS SMILE NEAR THE END IM SLEEP
Why does this feel so intimate? I can feel the closeness through my screen.
The zooms bah
I might be gayer than I thought
hahaha! ❤️
Same
That single tear. It's enough to know he had someone particular in mind when singing and composing this song. That lost love. Someone of deep devotion and admiration. It's painful, yet endearing to witness his vulnerability in not just this song, but in many of his works that resonates within us.
You are now an Oscar nominated songwriter Sufjan Stevens
And I'm really rooting for him tomorrow. Go Sufjan!!! Get that Oscar!! And I hope everybody learns how to pronounce your and Timothée Chalamet's names
Its so refreshing to see a man so connected to his emotions.... swoon
For sure. He is gorgeous.
The looks shared between the singer at the end makes me believe that there is a story they all know about this song. And how much it means to Sufjan. His face clearly acknowledges their knowing looks. It is just so beautiful. I wish he would write a book one day preferably an autobiography.
Why listening to him is like floating on a dream?
I agree
Sufjan makes me feel less alone.
*How come this song is from 7 years ago and suits perfectly to CALL ME BY YOUR NAME???*
Sufjan was the one who actually suggested Luca Guadagnino to include this song in the film before it was even shot! *INSANE!*
I know right? Every goddamn lyric of it sounds like a thing Oliver would say. He goes to Elio's house, he listens to Elio play the guitar, "I would say I love you but saying it out loud is hard." "I won't stay very long." "I think of you as my brother, although that sounds dumb." and lastly "Words are futile devices." which always throws a gut punch to me because he is supposed to be an etymologist, his job is words yet he is at a lost for them and the song abruptly ends right after, as if he's given up.
Seetha Golden I also think its very fitting from Elio's point of view. How he wishes to be able to tell Oliver how he feels, but he can't really seem to put into words.
Actually that's not true from what I read several times in interviews, Luca had this idea first and that is why it was remixed to fit with what Luca wanted it to sound like for the film. To quote Sufan "That was his idea. He was entranced from the very beginning with the idea of using that song." Quote from Deadline Hollywood.
Sufjan is a true musician. He plays like 10+ instruments and has been composing everything from simple songs to indie symphonies and various projects for 20 years. Extremely creative person :))
well the movie has been in the works for about that time
It's been a long, long time
Since I've memorized your face
It's been four hours now
Since I've wandered through your place
And when I sleep on your couch
I feel very safe
And when you bring the blankets
I cover up my face
I do
Love you
I do
Love you
And when you play guitar
I listen to the strings buzz
The metal vibrates underneath your fingers
And when you crochet
I feel mesmerized and proud
And I would say I love you
But saying it out loud is hard
So I won't say it at all
And I won't stay very long
But you are life I needed all along
I think of you as my brother
Although that sounds dumb
And words are futile devices
I always thought it was “so I’ll say it at walls” :0
when his eyes tear up slightly at 2:12 , i just want to cry. i love him so much
yup he feels his music for sure it is a very longing for love type song i am crying too it is a song from call me by your name
Same here
When he smiled, I fell in love.
this song reflects the feeling of when you brush hands with your crush or wake up after dreaming of them.
my mother says "marijuana is a gate way drug for harder drugs, and Sufjan Stevens is a gate way to homosexuality."
A wise woman
but he is also very christian
Who cares if he's gay or not, just enjoy his music for fuck's sake
@@kromantik9589 that joke went above your head didn't it bud ?
LMFAO
who else watching this in 2020?
Why do people ask this question?
MEEEE
@@afdm4334 oh god
2021*
The awkward moment at the end is the best :)
I've gotta see this guy live.
Jeremy Seip I saw him in DC and Richmond - amazing performances. Wish I'd thought to follow him across a few more cities, because it'll probably be another five years before he goes on tour again!!
vbhfsh I love Carrie and Lowell - it had to grow on me a bit, but watching it performed live was so raw and heartfelt --
I've seen him twice and anytime he's close I'm going.
Ryuhza it's fucking incredible!
Unbelievably good live, and exactly like everyone says - absolute silence in the audience, incredible.
im so happy he wrote this song about me. miss u!!!!
the way i was in 4th grade when this song came out
Oh, are you for real?
LMFAOOO
This song is like a fragile piece of beauty in a morass of ugliness. To be be here listening, totally absorbed is a pleasure and privilege.
Love your way of using words.
I litreally just started listening to Sufjan Stevens tonight and I'd never heard this song before but he's crying and I'm crying and what the fuck
The prettiest man in the world. The smile in the end of the video... bufff
holy shit these zooms are intense, i know every one of sufjan's pores intimately now
i feel a deep athenian homosexual non-erotic love for this man. him and jude law thats it
just say u wanna fuck lol it's ok this is the internet
Your comment put a big smile on my face, bro. A big non-erotic hug from HOlland. haha.
It's what I feel, me too! A PLATHONIC LOVE! Hugs from Galicia haha
its ok you guys its 2019 nobody cares what you crave
You just used all that wordiness to actually say 'no homo'
his reaction at the end of the song actually made me squeal. i love him
Damn, he really is so buff. His voice doesn't give that vibe at all lol
he's not buff... he's toned.
He got hench from carrying the weight of all our sins
TBH a lot of gay men are that way lmao
sufjan stevens isnt gay...
@@paisenbaando he isnt straigh either
2:20 wow this smile is so cute...
God he's gorgeous... those eyes!!
His eyes are so beautiful, his smile is breathtaking and his voice is dreamy, I am actually falling for him, stop me
fucking perfection is what that is...
This song is so complex. There's, at first, the humility to say "I think of you as my brother, although that sounds dumb", and then he says this philosophical quote: "But words are futile devices". I feel there's no one like Sufjan, so emotive, sensitive, deep
His voice is fucking angelic
I'm in Love with Sufjan Stevens, you set me free 🕊️💓
THE WAY HE WAS SO CLOSE TO CRYING I LOVE HIM
I hope he gets better soon
I listen to this to fall asleep at night. So soothing.
Sufjan Stevens has always been special to me because his music has taken me through so many trials and tribulations over the years. Life wouldn't have been the same without his soothing words which taught me a lot about how to love women and how to make it through my own personal demons and self-arresting attitudes. Not that this matters much =p
Oh, but it matters a great deal! It makes all the difference, really. Because he is doing what he loves, m u s i c , and part of that means having an impact on the listeners, and from what you just described... I'd say you and your expressed appreciation are proof that he is in the right business/industry, and that you were meant to find his music once upon a time, for the purpose of having a guiding light to help you through the countless stages in life. (:
It's quite easy, unlike so many SS songs, to determine the meaning. "words are futile devices" simply means that nothing he says will have any positive or meaningful effect so it isn't worth saying them. A feeling a lot of people know well. It might not necessarily be bad though, it could also mean that something is so perfect that nothing you say will do it justice. Another feeling I'm sure we all know too well. An incredible song by an incredible artist.
💯💯
This feels so intimate
I see something in his eyes
So many indie icons all at once. Sufjan, Shara Nova (I think???) and St. Vincent all in the same room. Wow!!!
I was asking, who's the singer to his right? Some of them look like they'd be on Typhoon.
WHEN HE SMILED, MY CHEST HURT SO MUCH AND I CRIED, I'M NOT KIDDING
this just might be my favourite live performance from any musicians, ever
OH DID WE ALL CRIED AT THE END AND THEN SOFTLY SMILED BECASUE OF HIS TENDER SMILE?
I was my birthday today. It's 11:55pm now . Singing off the with this song .
I’m not afraid to say I’m in love with Sufjan Stevens. Sorry future college. #proud
One of the many artists that sound like he does on the album live. He creates such beautiful music. And he's from my state 😄
Jesse Pinkman new mexico?
Lol
God he's so beautiful, and the song, and how tender, his style, total mancrush
1:47 .... the microphone is bigger than homegirl's head.
A delicate masterpiece that weaves through the intricate tapestry of emotions,
Lyrics and gentle melodies create a space where love, vulnerability, and the beauty of human connection unfold,
Touches the heart and lingers in the mind.
I love how confident his voice gets in the end
He’s so beautiful
Made himself cry with his own song.
“I do.... love you.... I do” damnit every time ):
His wandering eyes though❤️
i keep watching this again to see his little smile during “saying it out loud is hard” and then again at the end... i think i’m in love with him
i love this man
The tear he wipes away at the end...
Listening to this almost every night because of call me by your name
There has never been a more perfect video on youtube
have this version of the song bookmarked since 2011. It's always just one click away as soon as I open up my internet browser. His music is like a warm blanket on the coldest winter day you've ever experienced.
That smile doe.....
he's so pretty omg
i love this man so much
Oh my goodness. I'm being brought to tears. This is coming from a new listener to Stevens. I've had Chicago on my iPod for a while now, but I'm just now discovering The Age of Adz. It's so bizarrely beautiful. Anyways, wow, Stevens live is just amazing. I wasn't expecting such heartfelt, emotional performances; he puts everything he has into them. I'll definitely have to listen to more now.
that face at the end!!!
Revisiting and it's even more heartbreaking and gut wrenching that he doesn't have his lover in the physical realm for thie lifetime... This movie. The music. EVERYTHING WAS.... IS... AND SHALL FOREVER REMAIN SUBLIME!!!! Oh my heart...
Sufjan and Diana Gordon would make some seriously beautiful music together 💫
I'm convinced this man really is an angel here on Earth. What a talented and beautiful musician. ❤
Sufjan Stevens' voice lives in the perfect place where tenderness and strength meet.
I can’t believe 11 years have gone by where I didn’t know about this video. I’ve been watching it at least once a day since I found it (and sometimes several times a day) and I can’t get over it. His voice, the way he smiles in the middle, the little face and tears at the end. I’m obsessed 😭
I listen to this song and I recall my adolescence in a northern italian countryside in eighties and this Is so sweet an sad.
just wanna shout out to all the homies that were here 12+ years ago. it was a time lol. happy sufjan continues to release music.
I could not help cry along with him. Such an impactful song and these weren't just lyrics but the life he has experienced in it's rawest form. I was looking for a live performance and didn't expect to see this deeply personal performance. #Grateful
He is such a gorgeous man. That’s all I have to say.
La musica di Stevens è incredibilmente raffinata, ricercata. Mi piace molto.
I can't stop listening this
Hey, Bryce Dessner!
this music is so pure
That look at the end. So intimate....It's the look of satisfaction from a humble artist, sealed with (I suspect) the reason he writes music.
I can’t stop discovering this artist and his music.... suddenly I need to hear and know it all. !!!!
If you haven't already, I recommend listening to his albums called "Michigan" and "Illinois"
@@gabrielledennis549 Thank you Gabrielle... yes... Romulus ...for example
