I knew someone who was both blind and deaf. They wrote letters on their companions skin to talk, and they did the same. Its was a slower communication, until they learned brail, but it worked. Its different to be both stuck in silence and darkness, for many, it's terrifying, especially if they were able to see and hear before. Love that Chicago Med showed that side of disabilities
That's how Helen Keller learned to communicate with her teacher. They call it fingerspelling. But here, the man will need a lot more time to make sense of what he's hearing than they make out in the episode. I read a book about a deaf girl of 16 who got a cochlear implant. She had lots of therapy for one ear and then the same for the next ear. She had to learn to differentiate between all the noises and sounds like birds and elephants and what not.
@@lisamae5870 I know right? He will be more helpless than ever. He should be leaning on someone for physical and emotional support. But despite that, he only thought how he will drag the love of his life down and was prepared to cut himself loose, for her sake.
@@ilovefoodespeciallybrownies The girl stuck with him. That stuff feels rare in this day and age. One little surprise issue... One never seen before emotional crash... and the first solution was an immediate divorce instead of working things out together as each other's half.
But when you think about it, thats really a societal perception- that people with disabilities are burdens and should remove themselves, he's not a "good guy" he's just acting out that belief. The fact that we praise him for it is disturbing because it suggests that we agree with the belief that he is a burden.
I have a blind cousin who married a deaf man. And they go by the same thing. “I’ll be your eyes, and you’ll be my ears” they have a daughter completely fine, and they’re such a happy and close family. I’m trying to teach myself ASL to be able to communicate with them.
As much as I love how they introduced the cochlear implant. If this was his first time, normally he wouldn’t be able to hear voices right away. It takes a lot of time and serious Auditory Verbal Therapy. But that is every deaf person’s worse nightmare.
My darkest fear is losing eyesight, my deepest darkest fear is losing both eyesight and hearing. Society needs to get their act together and collectively take on these large, humanity-centric disabilities and illnesses. If this pandemic or climate change shows anything, we are a long way off from such mentality.... and as a result, people will continue to be lost in the void of human failure.
I’m blind in my right eye and so rely on my right ear to hear things I can’t see/unaware of visually so much. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to a) be fully blind/hard of hearing and then b) lose the other sense that is heightened to help me, let alone a fully blind or deaf person
The cochlear implants helped my mum hear again ... without them she is completely deaf ... this might be because of my incoming period but it hit home for me
There's a film called the Sound of Metal about a drummer who loses his hearing, and gets cochlear implants. The sound techs on the film managed to recreate what it actually sounds like, hearing through cochlear implants - it's not even close to normal sounds. The guy was absolutely devastated, if you think this actor is good, should see that movie right at the point the implants got turned on. Unless someone made it abundantly clear what to expect beforehand, you would not be that excited at the sounds of the implant working, if you knew that you were going to go blind and those sounds were all you would have left.
Really curious how they will be in the future. Because he won't be able to see her sign and she doesn't know how to vocalize like he does. So unless she uses a type to speech converter, or they get a third, how will they communicate?
Helen Keller used finger signing, making signs into the palm, as she couldn’t see or hear. I don’t know how common it is now but they might be able to use it.
I kinda feel where this dude is coming from, my vision is getting worse and worse and I'm scared to go blind, I have some difficulty understanding what some people are saying, especially in shows or movies, I have to turn on subtitles or can't hear what they're saying the majority of the time because of the overlapping sounds of the background or music with the voices, it's honestly terrifying to think I could go completely blind or deaf one day
The show dealt with this. Maggie is a certified interpreter. They don't ever have it be someone that knows a language, they are certified, or just fluent. Dr Rhoades is fluent in Spanish, so he doesn't get translators when he has a Spanish speaking patient.
I’m a nurse and I know sign language(have since I was 8,it was a second language option where I went to school)it’s a lot easier not having to go through a third person to speak to hearing impaired patients and I know their parents(I work in pediatric ER and Oncology) appreciate that I can communicate with their children, makes it easier on them knowing the nurse knows exactly how they feel …just my situation 🤷🏻♀️
I wanted to cry sooo bad 😢😢😢🥺🥺🥺 that’s sooo sad blind and deaf this happend on a plane some guy was blind and deaf and some girl helped people are soooo kind
I work with teens who have Ushers- its heart-breaking and very hard for them to lose their sight, in addition to having some level of hearing loss. Means learning touch typing and other techniques for keeping them independent, cane training (prerequisite for a guide dog in the UK) and doing Sighted guide training or getting tech which can assist. Also needs a specialist TA who makes all the resources they need for class- custom font size and spacing, diagrams or graphics need lines which are visible and colours they can see, it takes hours to adapt things but its doable. Very cruel condition but people with it can live productive and independent lives, with support.
I have bad hearing and likely should have hearing aids courtesy of my dad’s genetics but recently my eyesight also started deteriorating rapidly courtesy from being inside using a computer all day everyday. I had good normal eyesight a year ago and now I have glasses I have to wear everyday. I”m only 16 so it’s kinda scary that my hearing and eyesight will only get worse.

this guy played his character so well. he's a great actor
He played also a deaf character in "Only murderers in the building" on Disney+
Oh wait, he's deaf in real life.. didn't know that
He's played a lot of different deaf characters. I'm really happy for him and that they actually hired a deaf actor
Think this is one of the few times Dr.Manning has followed the rules, waiting for patient's permission before disclosing anything

Ironically, I feel they'd have more communication than many couples lol no I talk over you or I yell at you

Honestly I don’t know what life would be like without eyes and ears. People who have all the senses, like myself, really forget how easy we have it.
It’s terrifying, being a completely silent, completely dark void, possibly for the rest of your life
@@obamaprism4168I’d just take the easy way out at that point.
Everyone is talking bout the couple but MAGGIE KNOWS ASL? I understood almost everything she and the couple signed
Maggie is the real MVP in legit 70%+ of episodes.
I was looking for a comment that confirmed it was proper ASL and not just gibberish
It's beginner level though, they REALLY should've hired an interpreter
"She should be with a person who won't be a burden to her!"
