Hi Keith. That was superb. Most instructors relegate the choice of grip to simply a matter of personal preference. This was the first time I have heard anyone convincingly recommend the reverse grip over a standard grip because of the stability advantage. Furthermore, the mechanical advantage of a reverse grip for stability and mobility is even more pronounced if you are carrying a longer than standard cane (for example 39 inches instead of 36 inches). Thank you Philip got your kind response and words of support. You make an excellent point about the additional advantage the reverse grip offers to those carrying longer than standard canes.

I love the products I’ve purchased through your company. Absolutely love them. But in trying to get my third purchase, your company really dropped the ball. Customer service was difficult to deal with. Still waiting for a purchase that was made almost 4 months ago.
This is a fantastic explanation of how to properly care of the cane for practical self-defense. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise! I will share this with the followers of my channel here on UA-cam and on Facebook
Other instructors carry horn facing back and that seems to be more conducive to a quick transition into a fighting grip (simply slide the hand down/forward). Keith's horn forward position requires an additional twist to be in the same horn-down fighting grip. Would love to see Keith put a video out on making this transition from normal walking to a ready to fight grip.
Interesting. I always carried my home-made T-handled cane the 'incorrect' way, with the longer part pointing rearwards. Glad I saw this. I'll try this tonight on the evening dog-walk. Thanks!
Thank you for confirming this. It’s unfortunate medical providers and healthcare professionals will watch me use it incorrectly. I remember when my professor tried to correct my cane form and turns out he was wrong. It just felt better to hold the cane with the hook forward, thank you for this confirmation 🙌🏾🙏🏾😊
Well, that was quite encouraging because it confirmed something I had come to suspect through trial and error (and just maybe a bit of speculation rooted in an admittedly low/rudimentary level of FMA training.) I need to hit your website and have a look at what you offer.
Thank you for your comment JT. Reversing the grip makes a solid difference as you had already determined. Please take a look at our web site www.canemasters.com and call me with any questions... Keith Melton, President of Cane Masters, 800-422-2263.
I have found using a cane, its easier and i have more support when its “backwards” ive been doing it for awhile now, and decided to look into if its beneficial or not and here i am 😂 glad my findings are the same
Thank you for sharing your experience! It's great to hear that you've found a technique that works well for you. Exploring different methods and finding what suits your needs best is an important part of any practice. Keep up the good work! If you have any questions or need further guidance, feel free to reach out.
With no training I've been instinctually carrying it horn forward for years. It just seemed the proper way even when I was originally told I was doing it wrong. 😁
Hi there, thanks for reaching out! All of our canes are ADA approved and as long as you have our mobility card, you can carry a cane without question (within US laws). You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything else.
@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes You didn't answer my question. What criteria does a cane have to meet, to be ADA compliant? Are there certain criteria that has to be met,? Like the size or shape of the handle, consturction, etc? Thank you.
Cane Masters produces only canes... we do not create training products. ACSD is a tactical system for the street that is different than other traditional martial art based systems which are focused on performing katas at karate tournaments. Keith
I love Cane master canes - they are THE best. But I disagree with these tips on how to hold and use the cane. The instructor is showing off spinning the Cane in preparation to strike. IN real world self defense I recommend not showing off like you are in a Kung Fu movie. Just use the cane to strike unexpectedly and strike hard - one handed forehand strike, switch to a backhand grip and hit with a one handed backhand strike, then go for finishing two hand top to bottom strike. It similar to kicking - fancy high kicks to the head aren't practical in the real world - hard kicks to the shins and groin or kicking punks and thugs when they are down - yep.
My thought . . . if you NEED a cane to even walk . . how likely are you to have the balance to spin and swing that thing? Great info on the correct way of holding it though. 🙂
Interesting. Someone else in the comments brought it up, but holding horn-back lets you slide your hand down quickly if you want to hold it like a sword. That said, using it one handed I see your point.
@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes Well, I'm 65 and have been mashed between two trucks back in 99 and I'm STILL working on gett over that-- so go out and do that FIRST , ,then come tell me about regular practice!! 16 February 2024 - As usual, your presentation is clear and well worded. You are clearly one of the best! Thank you.

If you left knee is sore which side is best to use your cane? Do you place it next to your sore leg or use it forming a triode in placement?

Hi there, thanks for reaching out! Yes, you can hold the cane with the horn facing backwards. It also depends where you are most comfortable with.
@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes I've seen canes on TV where instead of a hook it is a ball that you hold onto. Any thoughts on that?
Makes sense and I can see the logic in it-- but I just can't DO IT..
The key is regular practice!

If Bruce Lee had made it to an ancient age or broken a leg, then he would have used the cane like that.
Thanks Fulla... I agree... Bruce Lee would have loved the defensive advantages that a cane offers!
NO- I am NOT carrying it backward-- YOU are-- I don't care what a freakin therapist says.. I've tried that - and it's RIDICULOUS...
