  • This review is for the Dimarzio DP126 PJ bass pickup set, i.e. the Precision and jazz pickup set.
    Obviously the hexagonal black slugs look awesome but the pickups also have a very nice clarity to them. A worthy upgrade for any bass guitar.

    FYI, Those are adjustable poles. The closer the pickup poles are to the strings the greater the pull thus given a harder sound. Great for hard rock.

    I think the 4 wires allow you to wire them either in series or parallel

  • @tonemonkey98371
    @tonemonkey98371 Рік тому +3

    The four wires on the P are so that you could wire them up with a series/parallel switch. I have it that way on my bass with these pickups which gives a different tone. They're hot enough pickups that switching to parallel still has plenty of juice.

    The allen key allows you to raise the height of the pickup pieces so you can balance out the center strings. Set the distance between the top of the pole piece on the E string to 8/64" the A to 7/64" the D to 7/64" and the G to 6/64th of an inch for a start. You'll probably want to bring the A up a half turn and the D down a half turn after that.

    I had DM pups in my 81 Washburn SB-40EQ. Great bass. REAL low action, and it would shake the floor. One of the best basses I've had.

    Great review - thank you! I've used each of the pickups separately in different projects, but never as a pair. With regard to the 4 wires, essentially each pickup is a humbucker (why there's no noise). The P pickup has the obvious 2 coils side by side, and you could do series/parallel, but quite frankly, in parallel, they just sound limp! The J pickup has 2 stacked coils, and again, you could do series/parallel (pointless) but you could do a coil tap too, as each coil covers all 4 strings. Quite frankly, having tinkered with these before in various wiring options, the default of series humbucking is perfect for both. So each pickup, just solder the black and white together, send the red to live feed, and green to earth - sorted! Maybe in a studio setting where levels are closely monitored for recording, you could justify some of the series/parallel/coil-tap options, but anything other than normal series wiring just diminishes the output. On my Westone Thunder-II (which has clones of these pickups) throwing the "dual-sound" series->parallel switch is a dangerous thing to do on stage, as you just kill all the output!

    I also have greatly favored the P pup. But the J also has it's uses. It adds a hard driving treble ring when you need to add something over the nice thick P foundation. Like for example "Ace of Spades". Also the extra gain will OD the pups much easier, esp at loud volumes. They are perfect for that! I still usually used distortion.

    About the 4-wire J pickup.. A normal J pickup is a single coil and does NOT cancel hum by itself. In a J+J configuration both pickups are in a RWRP configuration and cancel hum together. Now a P pickup does cancel hum. That's why it has 2 bobbins. Both bobbins are in a RWRP configuration. The problem occurs when you want to add a J to a P. A normal J would bring in a solid hum when added to a P, so a hum-cancelling J must be used. Which is why it has 4 wires, because it has 2 separate coils internally. Check rear pics...

    The bridge pickup on a PJ setup is just there to color the tone of the split coil. I like both volumes full and will just dial one or the other back a hair which gives you several useful tones.
