Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound PJ Bass Pickups Set Review

- In this video, I review Seymour Duncan's Quarter Pound PJ Bass Pickups set. Once a very popular pickup for traditional Precision Basses, Duncan had to meet the demand to release a PJ set of Quarter Pounds as well. But are these pickups for more styles than just heavy rock?? I dislike these pickups immensely and they attempt to solve a problem that can be solved with your amp.
I’m with you now. After a couple years of listening to these pickups, I’ve decided they’re terrible. The P one is okay. But I very much dislike the J one.
@@RumblinManI have the SD 1/4 pickups on an old cheap bass I got in 2005 (I was a mark hoppus fan), what would you recommend these days?
@@liceafilms my favorite PJ pickups are the Lakland Neopunch set. That said, there are many wonderful sets out there. Sonic Pickups makes a great set… Lollar makes great stuff… Duncan Antiquity are awesome… just a matter of what sound you like!
@@RumblinManWhen you say the J one, do you mean by itself, or when used in combination with the P?
Also, do you think the combination would work for slap bass even today? I'm still working through the video at the time of posting this (sorry). But I was hoping to God that the PJ would be a good middle ground between the two. (I like the P bass warmth and depth for finger style, which is my bread and butter. But I'd like the option to have the brighter tones and slap capabilities that the J has. And I've heard many opinions on the PJ, but I'm hoping it's at least viable.)
@@RumblinMan Oh, another thing to add is that I finally finished the video.
You did an incredible job showcasing the power of these pickups, and you sounded very good. Your playing was kinda bussin', ngl. (This is a compliment if you never came across this saying before. Forgive the potential brain rot.)
You did a horrible job showing how terrible these pickups were, because your playing made it nigh irrelevant. Your sound was too damn good!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
(That was a joke intended to be a compliment)
Thank you for this review of the 1/4 pounder PJ pickups. I kept reading reviews that these were for heavy rocker bass players. But listening to you play and the sound you created has confirmed for me that these are the right pickups I want. I am going to install them in my Ibanez GSR200. Thanks!
Awesome!! Enjoy.
I replaced the pups on my Fender PJ bass with Seymore Duncan 1/4 pound pups. Man...like night and day. So much more "umph" and crispier when needed. It's like a whole new bass. VERY satisfied.
Always enjoy your reviews. I recently purchased was a used squire affinity Jazz bass.
I can't believe how good this bass sounds. I was at first thinking of putting in new pickups and bridge etc.
I'm not going to do anything to it. I have a fender player Jazz bass and The Low pricee affinity sound wise only
gives it a real run for the money. A lot of young players fell they need a thousand dollar bass to sound better. I think what
we really need to do to sound better on the base is. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Thanks for listening.
mynewsong awesome!! Glad you’re having a great experience with the Affinity.
I have the Precision (in what was my main bass for years) and Jazz QPs in separate basses and they have never done me wrong. They sound fantastic here.
Christian Joseph Allbee awesome, bro! Would love a set of jazz QP’s.
@@RumblinMan
Follow-up comment on the pickups:
I have mostly moved on to lower output pickups, but I still have a Jazz QP for the bridge and I intend to put it in a PJ setup (with a Duncan Vintage Precision pickup) for an active Jaguar Bass parts project. I have no doubt it will balance perfectly with the Precision pickup (even if that one isn't a QP).
@@AllbeeHivezChristianAllbee nice!!
As much as i love my Squire Vintage Modified Jazz, ive never been a huge fan of the stock pick ups. I upgraded the stock bridge to a Hipshot Kickass bridge. Next on the list is throwing in a set of these pickups. They sound perfect for a more modern sound which is what im shooting for. Great playing, and awesome review. Really appreciate the input. Thanks brotha!
T.J. Meechan thanks TJ!! Always a blessing to hear from you bro. Yeah man, I imagine a set of these for your Jazz would be AWESOME!
Tossed these into my Yamaha bb434, and it sounds so much better. Less muddy and has a bigger punch, these are awesome
I'm swapping out the pups on my bb434 too. But really, the upgrade is sort of incidental, I don't really have a problem with the current pups. I'm refinishing the body to personalize it and give it a unique color, and I figure as long as I'm gutting it, I might as well upgrade the electronics. However I think I'm leaning towards the Aguilar AG 4P/J-HC atm. Still pretty early in my research though.
@@mattt180what did you end up buying?
@@ZezeMotta-mw6kb I got the Aguilar and it sounds great! But the stock pups didn't sound bad, so lesson learned: Do not upgrade parts unless there is something specific you don't like, or something specific that you can only achieve with certain pick ups. I don't like the stock pick ups on my Sterling Mariposa so that is something I'm actually going to change eventually, lol.
They kinda sound light
These are my go to pickups for PJ builds if the customer doesn't request something else.
Love the review. I'm getting a custom built bass and was in the market for which pickups to put in it. thank you for helping me make my decision.
Thanks so much!!
Update from my last comment:
I am currently building a Jaguar Bass (separate from the active one I previously mentioned) from various Fender Player parts and I have my eye on a set of these pickups for an “inspired by Mark Hoppus” setup. I can’t wait to earn the money to get them and put them in😊
i have my guitar tech installing these in my Fender Mustang PJ, can’t wait to get it back
hey dude, I'm wanting to do the same thing with my PJ Mustang, any chance of a little review? Mostly wondering if they're the same size as the stock fender ones or did you have to cut into the body a little to accommodate them on the bass?
@@niccals917 still haven’t got it back. when i dropped it off he brought up that it was a possibility that he may have to route the body slightly, but as an update he said that he won’t have to.
@@DraftZJ Well that alone is good enough for me thanks man :) feel free to reply back here when you get it back, I'd still love to hear what you have to say about it.
I've got a set of these things coming in the mail now,to put in a "Rouge"bass,a P/J,that thing is gonna growl!
I am waiting for a Squier Mini P-bass now and am thinking about putting the QP P-pickup in it
RM, I'm not used to hearing lows like that, off the bridge . I've got an EMG set on my PJ and it is quite versatile.
Wow! Awesome sounds from those Seymour Duncan pickups! Another great review Rumblin Man!
shardnz thank you Shardnz! Always an encouragement
Awesome video dude !!! Will be ordering the same kit for my bass soon !!!
Where in FLORIDA is your tech located?
I just threw a set of Quarter Pounders in my Classic Vibe Jazz and it totally brought that bass to life, I just put of of these Vintage Modified on layaway at a pawn shop for $160. My son and I love buying affordable guitars and upgrading them. God bless brother 👍, oh i almost forgot to mention the sound of the pick ups 👌. My son is also a worship guitarist ☝️
God bless you too!!
I threw these into my first bass, a crappy Peavey Milestone IV. Not knowing much about basses, I felt like the stock pickups were missing something. I could feel the marrow in my leg bones.
Hey ATL Thrasher, I have an old Peavey Millennium I put the Jazz Quarter Pounders into and that bass sounds better than my $2,000 Fender American Deluxe. Crazy how a simple pickup can make such a difference.
@@GlenBarnhardt Absolutely. These passive pickups have more power than the active EMGs that came with my Schector Riot-4! Unfortunately, I donated my Peavey to a therapist to help someone else cope with anxiety issues. (Unfortunate that I miss that rumble, not that it's in better hands.) If I got my hands on another passive P that didn't have as many manufacturing flaws at that one did, I would slap more Quarter Pounds into them and tell my Schector that I'm going out for milk and cigarettes.
This makes me want to modify my Squier VM PJ. You sir have a new sub!
It’s a worthwhile upgrade! Thanks for joining up and God bless.
tapewounds, eh? I just moved over, love them.
1okanaganguy nice! DR??
I'm in the process of building out a Chibanez train wreck of an instrument that I got on amazon for $22. Will be giving the completed bass to a local Cocoa, FL elementary school for their music program. Looking for passive pickups and a bridge that won't cost too much. You can follow the build on twitter @Xobeloot. Thanks for the review!
Kevin Toole awesome bro!
I use Dunlop Super Bright 45/105. You might want to try them. I have not changed them in over a year and they have come into there own.
Great review. Are they hum cancelling?
Sounds great! Are these noisier than the stock pups? I’d be afraid the bigger magnets would increase hum/hiss.
Chris Skinner the P pickup doesn’t hum, but the J pickup does. I’m not sure if it’s worse than the stock pickups. But once I started playing, it didn’t bug me.
And apparently the SD hot stack cancels hum. Couldn’t get one in my country so just bought the p fuel coil and J bridge QPs.
I went a step further and got the wire in the squire affinity replaced with Gavitt 18 gauge cloth covered wire
Also did the pots - new ones are 250k Emerson CTS.
They sound solid! I like that low end on then J pick up which is normally weak in this level of PJ’s. Wondering how’d they sound with Chrome Flats. 🤔
Also, dope grooves in the intro! 👊🏼
Thank you as always bro!! Another guy on here commented that these sounded cool with flats. And thanks about the grooves!! It’s taken me years to come up with cool stuff. 😂
Love THOSE SPB 3 i have them on 2 of my fender p bass's .
Have them in my 84 charvel bass. Seymour Duncan is flat out amazing pickups. I have a fender MIM jazz bass w the SD jazz pickups as well.
Are these pick ups glued into it´s cover? Or can I get them out to put them into the original covers of my Aria bass? Are the PJ measures standardised??? Can I get original Seymour duncan covers without holes in it? Thank you all, for any help. KEVIN
I don’t have experience with the 1/4 pound PJ’s, but I do with the Jazz V set...perfect for the black Affinity you have on the wall back there (I’m surprised you still have the white PG on it...I remember your video on it where you couldn’t wait to get rid of it...).
Anyway, I got a set of the QP Jazz V’s for a Squier VM Jazz V. I liked them so much, I got another set for a Jazz V fretless I put together. They sound totally different in each bass. After you swap pickups in the Affinity JV, you’ll realize just how bad the originals are...
Liked and sub’ed.
Dwarde Bass what’s up! Man, I so greatly appreciate your feedback and input!! That’s cool that you remember the Affinity Jazz V review. It’s the only bass that I still have left from my Seattle days. I never did change the pickguard, but still want to after all these years. Haha. I’ve thought of selling the bass, but can’t bring myself to do so. Man, I DEFINITELY want to install and review a set of quarter pound Jazz V pickups in that bass. Sadly, I can’t afford to do it right now, but down the line I totally hope to make that happen! God bless bro.
1/4 pounders have a distinct growl to them. i love it. that being said they are not the most versitile pickups.
The squire pickups usually are low output or not super inspiring, they save some money to make it budget friendly. Perfect for upgrading. Nice rem shoutout
Nordstrand NP4/NJ4SV compare to these a little more hi fi though. These are great. I prefer the nordstrands a notch above these. However these are killer.
Freaking nice!!!
Bought a nother Glarry, yeah I know, but I got it to do mods to. I started with the pots and Jack, shop says it has Gibson guts now ,next are those quarter pounders.what do you think bout those Geezer Butler EMG s?
The GZ’s are good pickups! Not at all my favorite, but they do sound good.
Thanks! THe review I was looking for since a while. I have been always wondering about this pick-up set. It would be nice to have a comparison of this specific bass with its standard pick-ups and the quanrter pounder. Would you?
2OfSpades I would if I could! Sadly I no longer have access to this bass. So sorry!
@@RumblinMan no problem, thanks for answering!
I had a set of just p bass quarter pounders in an SX pbass and in the fender Mark Hoppus I owned. They're great for rock but I use flats so it sounded cool. I chose to go with a lower output for my style though. Still awesome pickups for what they're made for
Very nice!! I would love to hear these with flats.
Thanks for the review...Im also a Worship bassist an was hoping they would work good for CCM....
Christopher Michael Music thanks so much! Yeah, I think you can get some good worship tones with these. They’re not my favorite PJ pickups, but they’re not bad.
Great Review!
Thank you!
Hey there Rumblin man, great demo! and great playing as always!!! I respect your opinion, how do you think the Fender Yosemite pjs measure up to these, I know you've played both. Thanks Brother.
Scott Rubey thanks very much Scott!! I found the Yosemite PJ pickups to be a bit disappointing. Too bassy. After a while, I stopped liking these pounders as well. My favorite PJ pickup set is the Lakland Neopunch set. I haven’t hear better! Second for me would be the EMG Geezer Butler set. Be blessed!
Mike Mills always had cool basslines back in the early R. E. M day's.
Thanks for a great demo?
Thank you! I believe they were DR Black Beauty strings.
Sounds good.
sounds good man
kevin cluver thank you bro!
Would you say they can do warm and clear though without brittle harsh highs?
To me, these aren’t the warmest sounding pickups. I’d look elsewhere.
Awesome playing! I'm a fan,, just about to order a set of these for my Yamaha PJ.
Ian Stanley Very nice bro!! Thank you for the kind words. God bless!!!
I love that bass as well
The tune that begins at 4:02 sounds like Sonic is about to fight Dr. Robotnik on the final level.
Are they humbucking? How does this work because it appears the Semour Duncan Quarter Pounders have to be wired a certain way when they are both installed, and there has to be two pickups in order for there to be some sort of humbucking to happen?
I can tell you don’t know much about this this( and that’s ok) they are Pj pickups, not humbuckers.
@@counter3911 and i can tell you that you know nothing about courtesy. Be nice.
@@chasing_dragons I said that was ok, I was trying to be nice
Which strings are you using ?
DR Black Beauties in this video.
Hi there! Hey, the tone sounds quite strange to me, it has a boxy mid and sounds like it lacks lows... are you sure you wired the pickups with the correct phase, and not inverted? I've had that kind of sound in other basses when the luthiers wire the pickups incorrectly, out-of-phase with each other, and they sounded like that when it happened. Cheers!
Hey man, thanks for giving me honest feedback without dissing me in any way. Haha. So, funny thing is, you’re dead on that the pickups sound strange and lack lows. I began to think so too after shooting this review, and later decided I didn’t like them. The wiring possibility didn’t occur to me, as a tech in my area performed the installation. Now that you mention it, this could be what happened.
@@RumblinMan no worries dude, I hope I can help in any way. Are you used to soldering? Perhaps you could try inverting the polarity of one of the pickups...
Diogo Baeder I’ve never soldered. But sadly I don’t have access to this bass anymore. I upgraded it for a friend.
i like you man. no nonsense.
Means a lot, bro.
Are these compatible with an Affinity Squire PJ?
Absolutely.
Is the fret board ebony? That is the darkest one I have ever seen.
Brian Mitchell Indian Laurel, actually.
loved the tone!! What wiring is in the bass? stock squier??
Uriel Ortega standard wiring!
These always seem to sound real tinny.
Agreed. The bridge pickup is terrible.
Hello Rumblin Man!
I have a Squier Affinity PJ Bass
If I install this Seymour Duncan set :
Should I change the electronics? Or can i keep my current Electronics? If i keep my original electronics, will still aound better and great compared to original pickups ?
Besides, will i finally have more defined medium?
The pickups themselves will come with new wires to wire them in with. But in terms of your pots, ground, etc., it’s fine to keep all that. That said, Affinity being the lower-end Squier’s, your bass will sound ALOT better if you go ahead and change everything.
@@RumblinMan so it i keep my pots and grounds and install Seymour Duncan pick-up, there will be not much différence compared to original pick-up ??
@@RumblinMan or should Ingo for the EMG GZR PJ (only 180 eur and include pots and ground etc.....) while Seymour Duncan does not include potd, grounds, etc
@@stevewindsenergy there will be a difference in sound.
@@stevewindsenergy it’s better to get as many parts as you can, but you don’t have to. The Duncan’s may sound fine with the stock electronics.
Are this pickups solderless?
pink bastard2.0 the pickups themselves are not solderless.
Would you give those pups to me for free? You skill makes any basses sound well anyway😂
Thank you for the kind words brother! If I had the budget, I would certainly give you a set. But sadly this is the only set I have.
@@RumblinMan lol I was kidding anyway hahahaha. Nice vid tho!👍
Hold on a second, do you also run generation gap gaming?
Not me!
Did you change out the pots as well?
Matt C no sir
Hey ! I want to buy a squier fender p bass for 200€ and buy this pick up for 140€
Total : 340€, is a good option ?
Baptiste Ferraro absolutely!
Slap like now!!! Don't use pick. Not epic. Your bass will explode. Good review! I'm thinking of getting this pickups. Going to put it on a $61 bass from Wish. Hell! I might get those black strings too since it's a white bass. Thanks for the video!

@@funkbasscorsario1400 thank you Mr. Funkbass!!!! Always blessed when I get to hear from you, bro. The strings are sweet. Get yours here: amzn.to/2IPjvbd
Rumblin Man cool my brother & excellent job review those pickups❤
Funkbass Corsario thank you my bro!
are these pickups hum cancelling ?
krazybassman all Precision-style pickups are hum canceling, but I don’t think the J is.
I have that same bass guitar, and the Jazz pickup is noisy, how is the quarter pound apple to Apple?.
Jose Mendez I like the quarter pound much better. I hated the other pickup. I must say though that the quarter pound is one of the most trebly pickups I’ve ever heard. Almost too trebly.
The noise is normal for a Jazz pickup. They are a straight single coil, hence susceptible to 60 cycle hum.
Standard P-Bass pickups are split coil/reverse wound from each other which bucks the hum, hence having a much lower noise floor.
sweeet
Replacing deluxe p base pickup with Seymour Duncan 1/4 were great sound
Not a fan of the sound of those tbh. Sounds too tiny and like there’s not enough low end.
Good point.
Lacks meat
The pickups are more expensive than the bass 😂
