    I wish there was a demo of this pedal where someone just shows a bunch of different settings without any further ado, and without talking. In the format of Fender amp demos, with the clean and clear sound, but with this pedal. That’d be much more helpful than the few demos I’m able to find right now.

    Glad to know that so many found the humourous ; however, I wished to hear, at least a few more of the permutations the pedal can attain… At least there are other places I can go to slake my needs. Cheers/Slainte

    This pedal is my dream come true! Once I have some spare bones I'm definitely going to buy one of these. The muff is such an amazing distortion sound, and to me there is not other fuzz like it. I started out really liking the russian versions, but now I'm definitely chasing the tone of the ram's head or the triangle muff. Seems like you can accomplish what ever fuzz sound you want with this one.

    Love the part (10:25) where Ryan is critiquing EHX's Germanium Big Muff Pi Distortion pedal because it has a buzzy and bright germanium side that gets mixed with an overdrive side. Of course, the Wren and Cuff pedal being reviewed in this video has a germanium side that can be mixed with the more traditional muffier distortion fuzz. This critique happens right before Ryan and Matt start the review proper of the De La Riva (or "Fuzzy Pudding" as I call it, because the jiu jitsu guard known as the "De La Riva" was initially called the "Pudding" guard because it made opponents wobble).
    I noticed this while trying to get information (found at 27:45) on which side of the W&C pedal is the germanium side (no labels!). They give you "Transister Select 1" and "Transistor Select 2" instead of labels for the germanium or silicon circuits. Answer--It was a trick question: There is no germanium side because the left side (TS1) is for one gain stage and the right side (TS2) is for another stage. You can change either/both of the two transistors in the main gain/clipping stages (Stage 2 and Stage 3) from SI to Ge or from Ge to Si. Having the Transistor Select (TS) toggle on Low gives you germanium. Presumably, TS1 is for the transistor in Stage Two, and TS2 is for the transistor in Stage Three. After making changes to the DIP switches to geranium (27:45), Matt goes back to silicon transistors at 29:10.

    Damn. That might be the first muff I truly like the sound of. I kinda like the infinite sustain thing that muffs have, but it’s a bit too full on and dark for me most of the time. This thing can do stuff that sound distinctly not muffy! Very cool! Bummer it’s so damn expensive :)

    Cool pedal. I am wondering how it compares to the American Geek and the Animalizzer. Interesting that the Ge vs Si options are the actual transistors, not just clipping diodes as on those pedals.
    13 binary options = 2^12 = 4096 + 2^5 for when the tonestack is not bypassed = 4128. Still a ton of options.

    The De La Riva seems to be a great pedal but the position of the toggle switches are more than questionable ...especially in the heat of a gig. Can’t believe this kind of thing is still happening in 2019.

      We took over a year to make this pedal, and did a ton of stomping. Have yet to have any issues with damage to toggles. Even blind stomping in live situations. Should that happen, we have a lifetime no questions asked warranty that 100% covers any damage done to the pedal regardless of the reason. Thx

    • @mr.k905
      @mr.k905 5 років тому

      WrenAndCuff ok, that’s nice (seriously!) but I would rather simply want to have the switches in a different place than to worry during a gig or make use of the warranty (also I’m in Germany and it’s a pain to send pedals across the Atlantic, waiting at the customs, paying import fees ...again etc.). I had similar positioned toggle switches on two pedals and managed to damage both. My foot comes down on the switch(es) at an angle sometimes due to dancing and giving 100%. Maybe that’s why I am a bit afraid. So I never bought a pedal like that again. I know many gigging musicians who feel the same about this topic.
      Really don’t wanna bitch around (any more, sorry ; ) I think it’s a great sounding machine, honestly, but maybe that’s a tipp for the next pedal. Would definitely sell better and I’d buy one right away.
      Cheers from Berlin, K

    Oh for heavens sakes its the 'special transistors' myth again.

    • @WrenAndCuff
      @WrenAndCuff 5 років тому +5

      Different transistors sound different. That’s not a myth, it just is what it is. They can serve the same basic function, but the end sound is always greatly impacted by that. That would be like saying changing tubes in an amp makes no difference.

    • @ResoBridge
      @ResoBridge 5 років тому +1

      @@WrenAndCuff That might be your experience, it's not mine. As far all my experiments are concerned, for small signal transistors in audio circuits, the only thing that may matter is gain. Certainly if you 'audition' transistors without measuring gain, so you compare transistors with different part numbers but with matched gains, you cannot draw valid conclusions. With old NOS transistors, and certainly with germanium, many of them leak like sieves, so you also need to keep an eye on leakage current. This one reason why building Fuzz Faces is such a hit and miss proposition. And I don't think you can compare transistors with valves, although again gain is a big variable.

    • @WrenAndCuff
      @WrenAndCuff 5 років тому +4

      @@ResoBridge testing silicon and germanium transistors meticulously is something I've personally spent literally hundreds of hours doing for the last 10 years. Dealing with leaky germaniums is something I've studied extensively, and we have literally built thousands of germanium pedals hand measuring each transistor set. I've had engineers swear up and down that transistors tested on their "$30k machine" (yes, a guy told me that) show that the transistors are perfect, but they sounded like s#@t and were terribly leaky. Gains are not everything, (silicon or germanium). Just like those germ fuzzes, every germ transistor put into the De La Rivas is tested one at a time to assure accuracy. on a side note, building Fuzz Faces is not at all a hit and miss proposition. If you know what you are doing, and have experience, you know what to look for and can build very consistent pedals.

    • @ResoBridge
      @ResoBridge 5 років тому +1

      @@WrenAndCuff Just to clarify - when I said building Fuzz Faces is a hit and miss proposition I should have said I meant for most DIY individual builders. I agree that if you know what you are doing, have sufficient stocks of transistors to sift through, measure everything carefully and make adjustments, you can get consistent results.
