Nominated for Best Global Music Album category for the 66th Grammy Awards, listen to Shrini's Dream from their first studio album in 45 years, This Moment (Abstract Logix, 2023), the music is dedicated to our departed brother Mandolin U.Shrinivas.
When Shakti co-founders John McLaughlin (guitar) and Zakir Hussain (tabla) first directed their virtuosity towards exploring common ground between Eastern and Western musical traditions - starting in private sessions, then on their 1975 debut album - the notion of such a hybrid was so novel that fans, industry executives, and even the media expressed concerned bafflement. Is McLaughlin, former collaborator with the likes of Miles Davis and Tony Williams and the leader of the titanic jazz-rock juggernaut the Mahavishnu Orchestra, really throwing it all away to sit barefoot and play deeply introspective acoustic music with virtuoso musicians barely known to Western audiences?
Fifty years on, McLaughlin and Hussain are still bandmates and brothers, while Shakti’s influence has inspired subsequent generations of musicians to float above political and artistic borders and forge their own global fusions. Concluding in Austin, Texas on September 16, this year’s sold out U.S. tour in support of the group’s first new studio album in 45 years, This Moment (released June 23, 2023), emphasized not only Shakti’s tremendous impact on what we now call “world music,” but also demonstrated the ongoing viability of Shakti’s initial concept.
This Moment was recorded in isolation, with each member delivering their contributions separately from their respective home cities. The tour proved conclusively that the album’s thrillingly precise unison passages, high-wire solo statements, and roiling rhythmic intensity were no feat of studio trickery. The tour’s twenty four dates were themselves an escalation, as the members of the current Shakti lineup - McLaughin, Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram - grew closer, re-established long standing friendships, and plunged further into the spiritual ecstasy embodied in their intricate, collaborative music. Audiences were awed, and illustrious Shakti fans Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck, Bill Frisell, and John Scofield - “truly fine musicians whom I’ve admired for decades,” in McLaughlin’s words - took turns performing special solo opening spots.
Now, with the members of Shakti returning to their individual pursuits, what remains are the memories of those riveting concert performances and This Moment - a recording that stands both as summary and extension of Shakti’s reverent, powerful, and revolutionary deconstruction and reassembly of East and West. Of his comrades, McLaughlin professes that “their influence on me as a musician and human being is without equal. It’s really a thrill, and I’m delighted to be part of this marvelous tradition of Shakti.”
“And now,” reflects Zakir Hussain, “the decades of individual music experiences we all have had poured into this gathering's offering has resulted in an extraordinary depth to the sound and interaction of this band.”
What critics are saying about This Moment:
“...extraordinary musical communication that transcends traditions, concepts, and formal approaches, making Shakti a band for the ages.” - Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com
“This Moment, the group’s seventh outing together, captures Shakti once again stretching the boundaries of Hindustani and Carnatic music while injecting Western ideas of harmony into its successful world music formula.” - Bill Milkowski, Downbeat
“The stratospheric level of collective expertise creates a mystical musical vessel designed to take the listener on a transcendental celebration of life.” - Jimmy Leslie, Guitar Player
“...this remarkable album, played with such a high degree of musicianship it seems beyond the realm of mere mortals…. goes beyond anything heard before in jazz…” - Stuart Nicholson, Jazzwise (Five Star Review)
“Musical highlights? They unfold from first note to last, the players flowing in and out in a seamless choreography which is, by turns, joyous, thrilling and moving.” - Ian Patterson, AllAboutJazz

Its a shame that they will get recognition in their own country after a foreign organisation honoured them, we failed to recognise what the Recording Academy did, thats the harm bollywood has done to Indian music, music has become a subordinate to the films, hope this changes and independent music breaks out into the mainstream
Most Indians don't know about them
it says nominated for grammy, came here to congratulating on WINNING it. Gem it is. 🤩
Thanks Grammy. I got introduced to the masterpiece
I salute John McLaughlin to play guitar sitting on the "floor" !!! This is how we blend with others.
floor ?? to me looks lika flying carpeT travelling thru Space 🌠🌠🌠 💫🌠 🌠 spiralling out of time
I was there! Great show from start to finish. Thank you, Shakti, for a memorable evening.
Magical. Saw them in Portland. Best musical experience ever.
Maestro McLaughlin honoring the incomparable Srinivas with more than a little Mahavishnu Orchestra-era fire. Bravo!
❤
Congratulations on securing a Grammy guys !!
And it's got Grammy 🎉
Congraz for Gramy win... Be proud to be an Indian
8:48 after that, that coordination between diff instruments damnnnn.
Traveled to Kolkata for their concert at the Calcutta Cricket Club in Jan this year. Unbelievable skill, precision, emotion. The way John united northern and southern Indian classical traditions decades ago stands the test of time and has encouraged a non-regional development of Indian music, to monumental effect. And if you think that's an exaggeration, ask any professional musician living in India.
Who is here after knowing Grammy awards
Congratulations Shakthi Team ki
Grame Award
Mana India ki tesukuvaccaru

Truly exceptional- masterful at every level - my goodness, completely extraordinary vocal and instrumental genius and precision!
Real music won today❤🎉
I had chance to watch live when then they performed in Pune long time back. Since then I have collected multiple albums of Shakti. In fact I bought one "remember shakti" with my first salary.
Pyar hai apni culture se..jai hind....
It takes something extra ordinary/ other worldly for me to comment on so much of what I hear these days and there is a lot of great new music and many great artists but this......wow....on so many levels.
Much effort was put to the sound, we should all listen to music with open mind. It should not be all about hip hop, dancehall or any. Much love from Nigeria
From 4:58 what a magician!!
Spectacular, magnificent.
Yes❤.
Tabla it's just amazing the sound from your fingers and palms

congratulations maestros❤
Real music. Global music indeed,
McLoughlin je veliki umjetnik, možda i najveći uz Franka Zappu.

oh man - this concert was so amazing (saw them in Philly). I would love to have a professional recording of the entire show! Is there a plan to make something like that available?
I too would like to purchase a professional recording of the show if it is made available instead of a limited time ticket.
Congratulations all of you for winning Grammy awards ❤

Congratulations 👏👏👏🎉🎉🎉
Great👍🎉 to hear these legends
Great - Astonishing! I wonder what is the main kaida/phrasing used in this composition ?
I listened to this entire music on my earphones, and I really liked it. The music is somewhat different and a bit classical. A lot of efforts have been put into it, so for me, it deserves a Grammy
My thought exactly
. Some people are condemning the music because they properly don’t understand music and they are speaking because our fav didn’t win
I use to say that music is beyond what we think in Nigeria
That’s why the like of Asha don’t really sing in Nigeria anymore because we don’t appreciate her music.
Thanks a lot for sharing live recording. I have been searching for "manmohana madhusudhana" song. I couldn't find it anywhere. Please share a proper recording of that song.
Congratulations 🎉🎉
Just Peace ❤

Just like great legend fela anikulapo ...nice one
Who else heard a bit of ILAYARAJA in this. Please hit like
Music is a universal language, I guess what they awarded was just the fact that the music can cross borders. I may be wrong sha, but I’m speaking as a music inclined person.
If you are a musician you will understand what I’m saying.
Without any bias
Mind you the “world” is not just Nigeria
Now its grammy❤❤❤

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oga o.
here before this got a million views( 24k currently)
Many Nigerian that are crying because Davido didn't win the Grammy won't understand how great and heavenly this music is because they think it's all about party, dance dance, dance.
Many of them are just music consumers. Many of them know nothing about chords, music structure, music composition, creativity, etc.
Mind blowing performance 😅 congratulations team India 😅
Very beautiful sound tho ...
🎉
