I find it crazy that authors write love-interests that are distantly related and somehow think it's completely okay...like some people are still going to feel weird abt it. Later in the series, SJM tries to 'fix' this problem by saying that Rowan's bloodline is so distant from Aelin's that she's probably more related to Chaol than she is to him, which is absolutely crazy bc Chaol was also her love interest. Let's not forget that Aelin and Dorian are also related and they dated. In one series, SJM somehow managed to create two incestual relationships while also insinuating a third, all of which include Aelin.

I remember reading these in middle school and I think this is the second to last of the books I read. The shift to her becoming a fey princess retaking her kingdom felt so jarring, like her being an assassin didn't really matter much past this point. And the way the books kept on getting more and more explicit felt so uncomfortable especially since I was reading them at around twelve years old lol. I really liked Manon though, and I'm so disappointed to hear the direction her plotline went by the final book.

Now that I've finished this entire series I wanted to come back and drop some of my favorite unhinged plot points and events of the later books. I promise all these things actually happen.
    - Aelin and Elide take baths next to each other in separate tubs like they're in a Viagra commercial
    - Aedion casually admits that he's pansexual during battle.
    - The other rulers of Terrasen only allowed one person to take the blood oath, but Aelin hands it out like candy.
    - Iron stops magic, but you can use magic ON iron and it works just fine.
    - Dorian shifts himself into a woman and it's heavily implied that Manon is into it.
    - SJM messed up Chaol's character so badly she had an entire book to rehab him.
    - Rowan refuses to have sex with Aelin for like 3+ books because they're on the road and doesn't want to do it in nature, but when they finally do it's a beach where a bunch of people have just DIED and they get sand all up in each other.
    - A bunch of gods get banished from the world and everyone just carries on as normal. It has no effect on their lives.

@@IXScasualty I agree Chaol is one of my favorite characters, but I also fell like the decisions that Sarah took with his character didn't made any sense, especially those:
      1. How can you be a captain of the royal guard without kïlling anyone or experiencing death. (I once saw an anti chaol post saying that him being the captain of the guard didn't made any sense since he didn't do anything that would be useful to Adarlan and I agree).
      2. Him being prejudiced towards magic wasn't much seen in first two books.
      3. He was always awkward around women but SJM made him quite toxic in other books.

28:53 okay i'm coming into this with 0 knowledge, i simply decided i'd watch this video without knowing anyone or anything so i have no clue what's going on, but i think this part is a real missed opportunity.
in a fantasy story like this, it's really important to bring back some realism that connects the readers to the characters, whether that be love troubles or feeling lost or overwhelmed, and coming of age is super popular to do that. grief isn't as deeply explored past the basic idea of "stages of grief" and i really think something that could be interesting is the complication that being a widower poses.
imagine a story where the female character (forgot her name lmao) has the internal conflict of feeling less loved over the late loved one of the male character (also forgot his name)? there could be super sweet convos about the MC and his feelings for his late wife/mate, a bonding over the FC and MC's losses, they could come to a mutual understanding of each other through it. and instead it's just "ik i loved her or whatever but she's dead now and i like you more" like that's just wild!
i know lots of things abt this story are asinine and truly tropes on tropes, but i really like grief storylines and so it popped out as something that could've been great.

There's a lot of pedantic arguments a person can make about the validity of their distant-familial pairings but I think people are really underestimating how easy it is, when writing a book, to make the two romantically involved characters not related. It actually takes out a huge chunk of work because you don't have to write the long awkward "well you're only distantly related so it's like fine it barely even counts you wouldn't even attend the same reunions. it's mostly marriage anyway" when you can just. not do that and have them not be related at all fdskjd.
I'm also not even sure about the "if you go back far enough" argument (not as in arguing with you but as in 'as a defence of fictional incest') because it kind of presupposes an adam and eve scenario rather than the one that exists. if you go back far enough the distance you had to be from a relative to have kids with them without making your mutual grandparents upset shrinks significantly but I'm not sure that's the slam dunk people want it to be, especially in a fairy scenario when literally anything you want can be true. I've liked a lot of books that in a historical setting will allow for cousin marriages to exist, but in an ostensibly modern fantasy it always kind of makes me go 🤔 like nobody had to. is the thing.

as a panroace enby i agree. connections that start with sexual attraction are sometimes tolerable, but any sort of romantic angst immediately turns me off (no pun intended). i’m fully an adult and i still can’t tell if the conflict from ambiguous relationships or love triangles is really meant to be appealing. i’d rather die than have two (or more) people try to compete for my attention, let alone my body. i would not be able to handle the stress. and it’s not that i don’t appreciate a little romance on the side, but when it’s the focus of a story that claims to be about action, political intrigue, etc i feel lied to. it’s a little easier to find something palatable in literature. but i also read webcomics and it’s a constant search for stories without second MLs, rampant miscommunication, sexual tension as a driving force…not to mention when i read a story that starts out great and devolves into love triangle nonsense. even some of my favorite stories would be MUCH better if they didn’t also involve multiple love interests (or any at all). that only scratches the surface but i think i’ve made my point 😂

SIX OF CROWS!! If you read that book I swear the writing is 10x better the plot is way more interesting!! As someone who does not like fantasy books and could hardly make it through the 1st throne of glass book…I finished the entire first book of Six of Crows in ONE day!!! You know that feeling when you’re reading and the book is so good that you almost forget you’re reading? That is Six of Crows it is literally a masterpiece!!!! If you do a commentary on it that would literally make my year!!! Love your content ❤ stay real girlie

Honestly I remember reading the entire series, and the beginning I really enjoyed but once it got to this book- no clue what was happening
I ended up just finishing the series just to finish it, which I feel like there was a lot more potential there since the story was interesting at first

Manon was also my favorite character, cause I don't really remember her getting too explicit. I did also hate all of Alien's names, why are there so many???

love the video!! however please be aware that sk*nwalkers are from Native American culture and it's very disrespectful to say or write their full name (hence why i censored it). they're not a cool cryptid to use in a story. i know that's sjm's fault for including them but we should all respect the request of the culture they come from.
love your videos, i listen to them a lot during my long drawing sessions!!
