- Schools in - All you wannabes, pay attention. I'm going to teach you how to pass the Ham Radio test. I went under cover at a VE testing session for an inside look at what happens. I'm installing the KXFL3 Roofing filter kit on my Elecraft KX3. You wont believe the procedure to recalibrate your radio. I'm self spotting again & this time it's for Field Day. A look at my hex beam from a DJI Drone.
Not sure if he mentioned it or not but, a big key is to NOT read ANY of the wrong answers, EVER. Just read the question and the correct answer. Your mind will associate that question with that answer. Never read a wrong answer so, when you take the test and an if you can't recall which answer is correct the only one that should look vaguely familiar is the correct one 99% of the time.
Totally agree. I got the prep guide by Craig Buck K4IA. It only gave the correct answers. I got 100% after going through it about three times and going over the answers a couple of additional times.
I did that for a week, then looked at the whole group of answers, I was getting 96% on the practice quizes and doing 92% when I took all 712 Extra questions in one sitting. I agree it is the way to start, but in some parts of the quiz it won't work
Richard Adkins That is called the MFJ study guide method and why so many hams today have no clue about much of anything technical. They memorized the answers and have no clue why that is the correct answer and are totally lost about so much about the hobby.
What is the name of the app he shows?
And NEVER take practice exams before the test. You'll be reading the wrong answers with the correct one. The more practice tests you take the Lower your score will be.
I took my General and extra on 11/15/16. I couldn't believe it, I passed both tests. 85 questions and only missed 1. No more tests forever!!
Nice job.
the crobar m
can you tell me what books you used to prep? thanks..!
No more tests ever? The test is every time you key the mike. LOL!! "Why isn't my radio transmitting!!!??? Oh, I forgot to attach the microphone. Oh, I unhooked the coax for the lightening storm, no wonder it took so long to tune." LOL! It is nice to have the extra and just roll down from 14.225 mhz and be able to contact anyone.
Nice job but isn't it only for 10 years at a time? Also, which one is it he general or extra do you have to take to get the most distance just be able to buy any ham radio on amazon and use it without worries? I don't want to be limited in power, watts etc.
Figured this out myself 25 years ago using a computer-based program, back before phone apps, and passed my Technician easily. Just got my General this past weekend using the same approach. Going for my Extra in early December. The method works like a charm.👍🏻
I used this method to get my General. When I took the test, I was drifting towards the right answer before even finishing reading the question. I was done within 7 minutes, perfect score.
Hi Bob. A big thank you. Your method with the app worked like a charm. I've been meaning to get my license for 40 years. Did it your way. Got the app, Studied the practice questions and tests for a couple weeks. Missed 2 on the exam. You are the man.
No, Your the man. Welcome to the hobby..
How can I possibly be the man when you're the man.
@@BusmasterB OK Ok.. You're both 'The Men' 😅😅
Weird. Back in the day, we actually learned about ham radio. Not just memorizing answers.
That may be why I've seen so many basic concepts in reddit. I guess this is the future that people wanted.
This is the same way that my old flight school made me study for the FAA exam. Literally gave me all the damn questions and answers and told me to memorize everything.
Sheppard Air for your ATP written does that :D
Between Dave Casler's study guide series, reading the books and countless hours on practice tests I managed to walk out of my exam session as a General.
Now I'm studying for Extra, also with Dave's study guide, but I bought the book this time. By the time I get back Stateside and into the exam I will have gone through Dave's guide and the Book as well as hours of practice tests.
My dad was a Ham. I got my Tech Plus in 1992 as another way to connect with my dad. I studied from the Radio Shack / Gordon West booklet and cassettes. I did a lot of CW then. Three years ago, I passed General & Extra, the next year, by studying On Line study questions. Repetition of the questions made it easier to pass. The pressure if off to Just Pass The Exam, I am going back and learning the electronics at my pace.
Great info, sir! I was going to avoid a license, but knowing this helps big time.
Thanks for making this video it gave me the kick in the ass i needed to finally get my license.I did what you said and purchased the app and I passed the test the first time. Now its time to learn. 73 KD9OZG
Nice just got my general and used the quick memorization method and passed with 85% going for my extra, great videos KI7QPA
7:30 I've already ordered my $30 radio. That is why I am learning this stuff and taking the test. If the radio were more expensive I wouldn't do it.
@@kimberlymerket1626 I've got a BF-F8HP. It works great. I can hit the repeaters and communicate with other ham radio operators just fine. They tell me that I come in very clear even when I am in the mountains where there is no cell phone service. (That is what motivated me to get into this.)
It also helps to build up some knowledge about the subject rather than just memorizing the answers for the test. There are multiple good video series on UA-cam for helping you learn more of the information for these tests. One that I recommend is David Casler!
Nothing that’s on that test has anything to do with what you do with a ham radio. Do away with the test all together
Thanks for the video and great idea's. Seriously the old ham guys turned me away from taking the test... however you channel gives me hope that it isn't just old guys hating everyone that's new.
Great video! You've just got a new subscriber. I've definitely been thinking about getting my ham license as I'm fascinated with the technical side of this hobby, the ability to make long distance contacts and i naturally have a curiosity of how things work and like to tinker with electronics.i guess my occupation of a professional driver doesn't give me much time to study, but would definitely be an added bonus traveling the country while making contacts with other operators. There's a local branch at a university a block from my home and they administer tests and recently had a hamfest. The cb radio band is ok, but i think amateur radio bands would better suit my interests. Thanks for the informative video and i look forward to learning more from you! Good day 👍
In Hoc Brother - Looking to get into Ham Radio and your channel was one of the first to come up in my search, Thanks for the Info.

@@K6UDA ZN '93; passed my Technician License Exam today!
While this will get someone to pass the test, that's all it will do. I like to know WHY something is the way it is. I like to understand the fundamentals and theories. Memorizing the Q&A to pass the test won't do that. I have a couple study guides and took a class with the local club. And while I still take the time to take practice tests on my phone app, I at least now understand what the questions and answers mean.
Getting ready to take my technician test. I have enjoyed all of your videos. Great job.
Thanks and good luck on the test.
I studied for 2 days and got my General class license. I just used the ARRL site's "review" function.
The Original Gamer What's their actual website?
I have toyed with getting my amateur radio license several times. But my conversational abilities are very weak. I already make antennas, manual antenna tuners, power supplies, do installations, climb towers for different services, convert radios from different Rado services to function on amateur radio band, programmed radios, and more. I just keep hesitating because of my reclusive ways. I am intelligent enough to do all the technical aspects of amateur radio. But, I am not intelligent enough to hold conversations. Until I make the decision to get the license, I can still do all the technical aspects of amateur radio. I already have oscilloscopes, dummy loads for testing, SWR meters, hundreds of components, plus, I love to climb towers! One can be a radio hobbyist without a license. I just can not transmit into anything but a dummy load.
0:45 I already ordered the book. I looked at the test questions and realized how easy the test was and that I probably don't need the book. But I want it. There are portions of the test that I don't know anything about and I want to learn them well. I want to know this information in context, not just pass an exam.
hey K6UDA... it's K6UA.. (no not Dale, he was my wife's uncle).. 👍
I love it. You got my 1x2.
Thanks for the great video. Heading in to take my Technician test this month and I will definitely be using your advice. In Hoc.
Thank you for your advice
Thanks Bob. I like your show. Keep up the good work!
Bob, What is the source for the $3.99 download of the HAM license study guide. I'd like to buy a copy for my Samsung phone, but can't find a source.
Excellent helpful video. Thank you.
Newcomer here. A friend has purchased the ARRL License Manual (Technician Class). But, I am finding it very intimidating and confusing when they start talking about the mechanics of circuits and radio waves. I am getting mixed advice of what specifically I should be studying. Some say the manual, others certain websites, others smartphone apps. Regardless of what I am looking at, reading, and so on, I('m finding VERY technical and specific information in all of it to where I get a feeling of being overwhelmed and frustrated because of some of the "practice tests" asking things like "What band is xx.xxx in" or "what frequency goes into 10m band" and the manual is still teaching me about the power is like across components in a parallel circuit...
I wish someone would have suggested that I study for the Advanced Test like this 30 years ago. No, I had to know why the magic works and answer the questions with that knowledge. Had I practiced the correct answer with the question in the question pool I might have passed the Advanced Test 30 years ago and not be in my 70's when I made Extra. Good suggestions in this video. KB8AMZ
I was given the impression that each test is different. 35 questions out of a pool of 400. Any truth to that? Would also like to know who the app source is. Tried looking for that app in particular but coming up with nothing that matches.
Saying “it’s not that hard” is kind of making me not what to do it. I’m struggling to pass practice tests. 400 question pool is pretty damn big
I liked when the first guy at the table when he was on myth busters
Thanks for the info. I grew up in south America and had to use hams for phone patches. I went crazy last year and got a hand held yeasu. I just monitor so I need to get my ham.
He's not had his coffee but he didn't miss the donuts
Thanks! The book was overwhelming, this app is helpful. 😎
when i took my test i needed to copy code and test. I went right up to advance in 1 day. a long day, that was over 30 years ago.
I heard some of you old timers are mad at us who get in without needing CW.
I don't care one way or another. I find it enjoyable, useful and copy everyday.
@@jack002tuber I heard that too. But I say if you want to learn code then by all means learn code if you don't want to CW then why waste time learning what you never will use. I want to be of service if and when the internet goes down and people need emergency help. Hurricanes and other natural disasters. My family has no interest in ham radio.
I passed mine in 3 hours by taking the practice exam over and over. Now I am licensed but don't know anything lol and it was completely free. Just search ham exam on the Internet.
Like this is some huge deal. It took me less than 3 days to study for the tech and 3 hours for the general class (except the Morse code part - due to a hearing impairment.) This was way back and since I let my license lapse... I need a an hour with the book for the tech test.
(roofing kit) That's the longest screw so many hams have had in a loooong time!
Thanks!! Good info thamks!
New subscriber. I really liked this video! I appreciate that you were blunt and clear. The information was quite helpful too... Of to download a couple apps! Thanks
Hey Brother, noticed the Sig shirt before you even spoke. I'm getting very interested in becoming a ham operator and want to take the test. There is a local club that meets nearby. Should I reach out to them before or after the test? Do most clubs offer the test and are they usually friendly towards rookies? I enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work. In Hoc Signo Vinces.
In Hoc Brother. I'd reach out to the local club before the test, you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Feel them out and see if its a group you want to associate with. You may find an elmer (ham speak for mentor) to help you study for the test. Good luck, welcome to the hobby. In Hoc & 73.
😁😂👍👍"... we're checkin' each other..."😂
WAITING TO SEE... Yes, we are waiting to see your new Groan, so sorry a little typo there, DROAN hoist a thin wire high into the atmosphere so you can do a quick call to MARS or distant next door. HI HI HI
Hey K6UDA could you spell the name of app so i can find it thank you and yes i will contact you with my call sign .
I studied one week for my Tech, One week for my General and two weeks for my Extra which I obtained last week. KJ7EOX
Nice job.
@@K6UDA Thank you, I still have a lot to learn. I used to work for a telephone company where I ran 6 & 12 ghz microwave radios. I have a commercial General Radio Telephone I obtained in 1983 for that job. It was like a refresher course for me. I learned AM, FM, PM and SSB in college. There is a lot more going on here than meets the eye.
Those hams setting at the table didnt look to happy to me. THANKS FOR THE VID LIKED AND SUBED
"I AM smiling."
judging by the glance of these questions if you have ever taken gr 9 electronics you are well under way... I like question 21, "did the multimeter warm up enough before use? "
I AM APPILYING SOON,
I have a free test on my phone called ham test prep. It looks legit. I've studied it. I don't have a ham licence yet
+jack002tuber Work it. Work it. Get back to me with your new call sign.

nice start but thats not on the test.
Ha. I know. Thanks for the encouragement. I like radio.
I'm new to this... studying. Taking my test in 2 weeks. 12:46 is that antenna vertical or horizontally polarized?
3.99. Now 15 for all 3. Guess they upped the price. Will buy a book for study and future reference .
What if people need ada accommodations to be with i.d.e.a. federal law compliance can the test be modified?
W5YI isn't doing the cash to pass offer anymore? Didn't they get busted for that twice?
I just started studying early today, and am COMPLETELY new to this, dont even own a radio yet. I took a practice test after the first two hours and scored a 65%. Have gone through study cards online and will do one more practice test today. I will either try to take the actual teat this thirsday, but not sure if I can make it or not. If not, I have to wait for two more weeks before the next session.
I downloaded the test app. The cover is the same they combined them all together.
Great vid
I got a test study app free and I love it.
Hi. What is the name?
Donald Smith! Cant you read?
@@donaldsmith3048 Nice scoffing.
@@karolakarola8986 I downloaded it from ARRL. It just said study guide. It covers all 3 license. It also tells when the tests will change. That is why I am only studying the first because the end of June the other 2 will change. I don't know how much but I want to get the first one down really good then work on the next one. The last one I would like to have but the first 2 would make me very happy! That covers most of the things that a HAM can do.
@@donaldsmith3048 Thank you. Good luck!!!!
What drone did you get? It has really video quality.
Is there a website or an app for a PC to prep for the test?

Thank You for this video 73
I decided to do my General, took 4 days and passed it, scheduled my Extra 15 days later and passed it too. The focus has to just be on the test, not the vast sea of topics the questions represent
Can I get the training material any other way than through a phone app. I have an older phone that I can't download apps?
Thanks, I really need motivation.
I was thinking about taking my HAM test, love GMRS and FRS but want to try more. I dont drive(right now) but I do have my State I.D. Do you know if this application for the smart phones are still out there? I was thinking of doing the third one (the last one that gets you the most distance anywhere) are all 3 versions/ranks/levels etc of the test the same questions or different? Like do they share some of the same with more.
Some exam classes may have questions in common, but the question pools for each class are different. Then there are different test versions for each class.
What happens is that you go in take the Tech exam. If you pass, you can take the General exam. If you pass that, you can take the Extra exam. On the same day, it doesn't cost cost any more to take the other exams, but it is worth it just for the practice..
The Extra class license does not "get you the most distance". It "just" allows you more operating privileges (frequencies, power levels, operating modes).
@@johnc8910 Oh I see thanks for the info man. But curious what happens if I fail the test, can I take it while I'm there a bunch of times til I pass it? I guess they'll charge me 15 bucks a try unless I pass it then I can try the general? The expert I think I'll skip since that's for worldwide which I dont need really. Besides if theres a apocalypse or something I doubt anyone will care about licenses lol.
Nice shirt - I have a similar one ;-) Thanks for the great videos, and the qso today. ihsv
Does this app give you all the pool questions for each test which is like "700" questions or just what is on the actual test?
It did. The video is several years old and the apps may have changed.
@@K6UDA Did as all 700 pool questions or just what is on the test?
I was ripped off! I paid $4.99 on Amazon for my Technician test prep guide. What I did like about my guide was that it only provided the correct answers. Why go over 1700 answers when 3/4s of them are incorrect? I went through the entire guide about 3 times and the question portion a couple more times. That's about four or five hours of studying. At least I passed with 100%.
There ya go. I think you got your money’s worth.
I was being facetious!
I love it "Not Qualified"
I love my sark 110. You should just buy one. It is so worth it
my friend in Canada the exam is made to fail unless you are electrician engineer, more than 1200 questions pool. You need 70% of 100 questions.
But if you PAY a 2-3,weeks "course" you are in, interesting isn't,
Good for you US Americans, I've heard your pool questions are around 400
badass wallpaper
You’re friggin adults! Lol😂
And?
Where is the link to the app? Please advise the specific name of the app on the Play Store. Thank you.

If I download the "Advanced" question pool, does that cover Technician and General Classes question pools too? Or are they totally different question pools?
The General has most of the Tech questions but there isn't an advanced test anymore. it the Extra exam now. Each is a different question pool.
Great, thank you!
I m interested but ,can I get license in india
You wouldn't be a part of one of these apps would you? 3.99? I keep hearing 3.99 for some reason.
syntaxerorr no but I paid my 3.99 for the tech and General.
I am confused on which app to use. Can anybody help me out?
I passed the General Class written and 5 watts code test with straight copy with one hour a night for eight days.1 hour of written test study and 1 hour of code each night and I Aced them both.I have less than Zero interest in the Extra Class so I will never study at all for it. That little bit of band space is not worth it on any day.
Aw Shit! I'm so sorry, Ill have to speak with them and Comcast.
yup just get the ticket punched they you can learn about the things you care about. do all three on the same day you save 30 bucks, almost enough for the cheapy HT. that is still the only ht I have, I just don't care much about repeaters. You also cheat the people in the club who think it is there duty to ask you repeatedly and unrelentingly when you are going to up grade.
So everyone I am wondering cause my sister and I would love to do this. She lives two counties over from me and we were wondering if the technician license is all we need to set up our radios so we can talk to each other? Or do we need to get our General license?
On a tech license, you and your sister could make contacts via local repeaters, DMR or Dstar using either a repeater or hotspot or even something like echolink. To do it on HF, you'd need a general license.
@@K6UDA : Two counties away, 10 meters might work for part of the year.
I getting into ham radio I want to do all 3 test an I am going to get the study apps
Ok so I can get these apps and this is all I need to help me pass the tests?
+Rusty Red Tractor that's how me and thousands of others did it.
