Hey Mike! I used the HAMRS software and activated my 1st POTA, K-3034)! HAMRS was a breeze to use! I'm already scheduling my next. Thanks for inspiring me to get out to the park and on the air!
Awesome!! I tried a week ago but I failed to activate the park. Only made 2 contacts. The bands have not been in our favor lately. I did use the app and really liked it though. Thanks for watching and have fun out there! 73
Great video, straight up and to-the-point, much like the app you are reviewing! And transmitting from the Republic of Texas! What more could we want? Great review!!!
Looks like a great first effort for POTA logging software, thanks for sharing! LCARA Ham Radio
You bet!
I just tried out HAMRS today on a POTA and found it to be great. Very simple to use and a nice, clean layout.
Glad you like it! I used it yesterday for pota but the bands were abysmal and only got 2 contacts!
Thank you for the great video. Question about the RST sent and RST received. Is "sent" their signal report to me (my signal they're receiving)? or is it their signal report I'm sending to them(?)
Green screen. WOW. You have come along way! Again great content. Love the logo. Tower T-Shirt order. Great Channel! Keep it up!!!
I know right? I'm becoming a legitimate UA-camr! Thanks for the tower order! Wearing it will add 6dB to your signal :)
@@hamradiotube maybe I should wear two! 😂
I tried using HAMRS on the Amazon HD8 tablet with an external keyboard.
Not bad, but it seems to require some amount of back and forth with the
screen. It would be nice if using the key would navigate between entry
fields more consistently. Need to play with this more.
Will also have to do a battery runtime test with the HD8, having the display
up to a high brightness level...
My tablets are too old for the software but I have it on my iPhone and Mac. The tab works on my Mac. They have a suggestion tab on their home page and are very welcome to input.
I did my first activation today @ Camp Creek State Park in WV with it today.
Great video Mike! I would also like to see a name field in this. It looks like good POTA/SOTA logging software. Maybe even a state and/or country field. I like that it’s simple. Thanks for showing this. If it could fetch the data, that would be nice also....ie Park info and QRZ callsign name etc
It's certainly a very great first start. I suspect their goal was to make as stripped down a log as possible as the info they have is all you need for pota. Names, states etc. are just a nicety that don't have anything to do with your actual pota log. I do love that it shows the name and state though. Totally not necessary for your log submission so I get what they are doing.
Sir first off my hat is off to you and videos. I'm studying for my Technician License and don't even own a radio yet but I got this App.for logging.. I live in Lake Charles, Louisiana and so want to start P.O.T.A. again keep up the great work and all 73
Hey thanks so much. I appreciate your kind words. Good luck on the exam and even though you may not have studied for it, when you pass your technician you can take the general test for free that same day. Not saying you can’t do POTA on the bands allocated to technician but general opens up a whole new world of frequencies to use that are more likely to allow for an easier activation. Good luck and we’ll see you on the air!
@@hamradiotube I sure will.
This looks great!! I have a chrome book and the battery lasts for ever!! But I haven’t found any logging software I like that works with android. I have HamLog on my phone but I think this is worth the 10$ to get it on my apple phone and Chromebook! Also my dad is a new ham and this looks super simple I think I’m going to suggest it to him for general logging.
Nice report.....I'll have to give it a try.
It's the best.
If I'm outside cell coverage, will the program update the files once you return to Wifi/cell coverage?
8P6RC
I don't know. I don't think you need wifi for anything other then pulling the names and locations up, which isn't necessary for anything other than just knowing their name and location. All POTA needs is the band, callsign and time.
I am stoked about this app!
Me too. I'll prob try it tomorrow on my Mac when I'm out.
How do you export the file to upload to parks on the air?
What Jarrett said.
Can you then export your log from here to QRZ, LoTW, HRDLog, etc? Nevermind, I missed the export to ADI.
Well there you go :)
Great review! One question “RST sent” is the signal report the answering station gives you?
It's what you send them.
@@hamradiotube thanks. So if they say my signal to them is 5/5 that’s where I enter it correct?
Downloaded the Kindle version of the app from the amz app store since I have one of the HD8s. Will have to see how the screen looks outdoors... or at least from inside the car.
I've not used a kindle but I've not had too much of an issue with my iPad outdoors.
Hi Mike. Love your vids. Been a ham for about a year and for the past month or so, I've been building a portable kit. I have an FT-891, Wolf River Coils and a Bioenno 40AH battery, all based on your vids. :-). I'm getting ready to do my first POTA activation. :-)
I have a logging question and this seems like the right place since this is a logging video. :-)
When you log these contacts, do you log with a /p designator? When you upload to LOTW, do you create a new location for each of these parks? It's not so much the software but the actual logging process that is confusing me a bit.
Thanks again for the great vids. Hope to catch you on the log some day.
W9DJD
Thanks for watching Dan. For logging I just use my call sign. No /p. You don’t need to create a different location for LoTW so long as you are within 50 miles (I think) of where you are registered. I will export a .adif file from my portable logger and import it to my logger at home. Then I upload to LoTW. I haven’t lately cuz I’m having some issues with it that I haven’t had time to fix. LoTW is kind of a pain.
Looks great but can someone tell me dose it only works well for North America and Canada ? Will it be any good for the UK 🇬🇧?
I feel I answered this question did I not?
I’ll be trying HAMRS out in the field soon. Been playing with the Mac version for a few weeks. If I do it’ll be on my Raspberry Pi for now. Been using pen & paper for POTA so far. If I like it I might buy the iOS version.
The Android version isn’t out yet. The developer said “soon”.
I'm going to be using it on my Mac tomorrow. I'll put it thru the ringer and see what I think in the real world. I suspect it will work great.
Hey Mike, This looks like a great App, simple and to the point. As you know so far I am a SOTA guy so far so I look forward to the SOTA template. My one comment/request is that in addition to the ADIF file, it would be great if there was also an option for a .csv export as well. - Jose (K6HZR)
It its pretty slick. He's been very receptive to feedback too. You can leave your comments/requests on the HAMRS home page. A lot of people are really excited for what this app already is, and what it can be in the future. He's really got something here.
Would be good to see cat frequency control via Bluetooth or a WiFi. Is there anything like that available for the IC-705? 73 PD1MV
That would be cool. Nothing like that that I'm aware of.
Mike how about if you're activating a 2fer or 3fer.?
Believe it or not, I've never done that, but I'm told you just rename the file and upload it again.
How do you export that log to QRZ?
Not sure. I don't import to QRZ. If you can import a .adif file that would be how though.
Looks like the delete option only appeared when there were two (or maybe more...) logbooks - and you didn't see the option when you deleted the second one. Might be a little bug there.
Yeah I noticed that as we were streaming. Weird how there has to be one there but thats not a big deal in the whole scheme of things.
Used HAMRS for Android today for a POTA activation. Worked well on a phone. Not complicated so pretty easy to figure out. Worth $4.99.
There's a reason so many of us use it. It does exactly what we need it to do.
I know next to nothing about Linux, but got so excited about Josh’s laptop video I went and resurrected an old Asus with it. I went looking around for logging software and there was HAMRS. There is also a radio “package” in the Linux Mint “store”, but HAMRS is too cool. You download it to mint as an “appimage” which is weird but workable. I have no idea how to get it to tap a call sign database. It does it automagically in iOS.
Hmm, I wouldn't know how to do that either. It just does it on my Mac. I know it pulls from QRZ for whatever thats worth. Maybe hit them up on the website??
@@hamradiotube I haven't tried it on that machine in a bit. I'll see if I can update it and do that in the latest version.
Thank you !!!! This is the app I was looking/waiting for. This is so awesome and simple. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Glad it was helpful!
Mike, any word from HAMRs on an update to match all the changes in the POTA program ( new country codes/park numbers). HAMRs is still the best logging program for POTA but it needs an update now.
I have not heard anything, no. I've also not messaged him either. I know a lot of people are though.
My Ipad is getting old and crashy so being able to jump onto something on my Android phone that works the same way has a lot of value, rather than having to revert to pencil and paper. It doesn't need much more adding to be a perfect POTA app. I haven't seen an Android logging app that was this good before.
Unfortunately I spoke too soon about the android version though I'm told its in development. I'm gonna have to use it on my Mac for a while. I have no intentions of buying new iPads just yet. It works on Windows if you have a laptop that you can take portable. Or a raspberry pi with a small monitor.
@@hamradiotube Android is in beta, I will wait. i use RumLogNG on my iPad and it is fantastic as a general logger but HamRS will save some vital seconds.
I dig this
Pretty sweet isn't it?
Hey I use log4om logging software but that is not for raspberry..hamrs seems pretty nice and for several platforms, windows, ios, raspberry waiting for Android .. it's new so it can only get better
Yep. Off to a pretty darn good start if you ask me.
How do I get the latest hamrs? k6dds
www.hamrs.app
IS THIS AVAILABLE FOR MY WINDOWS LAPTOP ?
yep
Is there an Android option for this program. Thanks. N3HSJ
I though there was but I misspoke. There is one in development I'm told.
Would be great if it could synchronise with your other devices.
yes it would
I just downloaded it from my iPad App Store.. it’s cool but would like to see dupes names and state/countries and park/sota location
It showed dupes on the computer version. I haven't downloaded the app yet. Def would like to see names/states/countries as well. Park locations aren't a big deal for me though.
I started looking for an alternate logger when I heard Ham Log went away. Seen someone mention this application and I got it downloaded on my iPhone and iPad. Have about 10 POTA SSB activations in on it now and it has been working great. Only complaint is that duplicate thing, duplicate calls are ok on POTA if the mode or band changes. But that is a very minor complaint and doesn't stop you from entering in a duplicate.
Nice. Glad to hear it's working for you. I did a failed POTA yesterday (only 2 contacts :( and used it on my Mac. Worked great for all two of the. I don't mind the Dupe thing. I like seeing who I've worked on different bands, and I have had dupes on the same band so I do find it useful.
@@hamradiotube I hate failed activations. If I’m less than a hour from home, no big deal. Further it bugs me more. Maybe he will add it where it tells you more duplicate details. Like same band or mode. Either way, it’s a lite and clean app. I and many others probably want to keep it that way.
@@RJ_McKenzie Fortunately I've not had too many failed activations. The unfortunate thing was this was my first outing with the 705. I wanted to make a great inaugural video banging out the contacts, but the bands had other plans.
@@hamradiotube Ah bummer. You'll get a good video with that rig eventually. I've had my eyes on one in action that a buddy of mine has. That waterfall is amazing for a portable rig. I hope they do a 100w version of it with that screen and features. And hopefully keep the size down from a full base station rig. I'm still waiting to see what Yaesu does in response to the 705. Because they have nothing that comes close to it.
@@RJ_McKenzie Oh I know. I was just really excited to go out yesterday and it sucked getting skunked.
Don’t forget to put a dash in the park number. Also as far as FT8 you can just export that adif from WSJT-X. Right now I log through HRD and I just import the wsjtx adif. I see this as being used as a logging interface and not really a log itself. But unless there is an adif import, logging FT8 manually is a duplicated effort.
What was being said about the dupe flag I believe is that it’s not a dupe since it’s on a second band but sounds like there is a ticket in to fix that.
73
K9MKE
Oh yeah, those stupid dash's haha! Good point on FT8. I don't do digital in the field so that didn't occur to me. For CW or SSB this is perfect. I still upload my logs into my main logging software on my computer to upload to LOTW. I like that the dupe is there even for different bands. Let's me know they are actively hunting and gives me an indication so I can thank them for other bands. I would leave that feature in. Or maybe modify it to show different bands, but I def want to see something for multiple contacts with someone.
It looks like you can't delete the last remaining logbook. There always has to be one.
HAMRS needs update for the new POTA Numbering
It really needs to be able to download the call sign database.
That would be a great feature, a lot of us agree.
nice and simple need to get on andriod soon as its out
I'm told its in development. I'm happy they did iOS and Mac first for once!
@@hamradiotube i am in no rush. lol
great video Mike i need to get out and do some radio and now we are allowed to travel out further i can go find a good high area or coast line to operate from.
73 Martin
@@dmcarpman well what are you waiting for?!?!
@@hamradiotube getting motivated lol
It’s on the AppStore now 5/25
Sure is.
n3jfp has some great logging software that I use that you customize for whatever the heck you want - also I lol'd at the 7200 haha we all know exactly what you meant hahaha
question?? how do you upload all of these logs to say LOTW or POTA? You never demo'd how to upload the log
Unfortunately N3FJP ignores every operating system except for Windows so I'll never use it. I wish more software was multi platform. Glad you caught the 7.200 lol! I did a whole pota how to video but the short answer is you email your .adif file to your pota section manager. Heres the video: ua-cam.com/video/oQr5NoNY6Pc/v-deo.html As far as LOTW, I email the .adif to myself and import it to my computers logging software that I then upload to LOTW.
This is great software. You could have linked to it instead of all that YOU stuff and UA-cam stuff.
Do I need to log for you too? Gees, some people are so ungreatful.
Mike, Jarrett Green is the creator. Awesome app btw.
Well he is an awesome person for doing this.
@@hamradiotube
He is. Super simple to use and from what I hear more templates are on the way. Thanks for the video.
AC Log already does this.
Other than the fact that it's only available for Windows. Rendering it useless for those who prefer to stay as far away as possible from that OS.
You ARE cool. TEXAS 🍺
Rock on!
FT8 and Cool Kids in the same sentence?
🤣
It could happen. I'm not much of a digital guy but I get on every now and then.
wanted to order a shirt, but 70$ shipping is to expensive for a 25$ shirt
Martin PA0KGB, The Netherlands
Wow that's crazy. Thanks for trying though.
I just got the app, I wish the keyboard had nums and letters on the same page without having to change. Other than that it’s sweet! k 7DFL (ham radios most dangerous farmer!)
I haven't downloaded it on my iPhone yet but yeah thats a pretty important thing having the numbers above the keypad. Hopefully they will read the comments and make some improvements. You can also suggest things on the HAMRS.app website. Thats a very good suggestion. Don't dig up any radials when you're farming either!!
No Android version
Not yet. It's being developed.
It’s out! :)
It's not free
I downloaded LoTW 4 days ago..sent request for initial callsign request but no reply recieved. I came across your video, downloaded HAMRS in my laptop within few mins. Thank you and 73. De VU3HZT
I wish you good luck with the nightmare that is LOTW
