I bought a heavy-duty tube wringer a while back for less than $25. At first I thought it was expensive for such a device. It has since helped me get every last drop out of tubes of my Tretinoin, toothpaste, liquid blush, sunscreen, you name it. Love this video!! One thing I wanted to add, is it's important NOT to mix anything else in with your sunscreen!! If you mix it with moisturizer, foundation, serum, glow drops, even water, it is likely to disrupt the fragile formula and you will not get the SPF promised. Let your skincare soak in before sunscreen, and let your sunscreen set/dry down before moving on to makeup! (You didn't mention mixing anything with sunscreen but I always like to share the PSA 🙂) I've been on a journey to use up what I have before buying more makeup, and oof it is hard! But it definitely has me reconsidering when I want to buy something new, especially for big things like foundation or eyeshadow palettes, because I know they will probably expire before I could ever use them up. I'm team mini mascaras only haha.

@@marygracefeltonIt lost on popularity like the whole of beauty youtube to be honest. I think it was in it's peak over 5 years ago with project pans, no buys and anti-hauls. Tik tok makeup girlies always reinventing the wheel with a new name when they bring this stuff back.
@@justynawisniewska1213 TBH a ton of creators I follow just got burnt out on Project Pans - using those products and neglecting others, hate-panning, etc. I was having the same experience, and am taking a bit of a break this year, too.
My tip for anything felt tip and ink related is to store it with the tip downward and not upright. Markers eyeliners whatever it doesn't matter. That way gravity brings all the ink to the tip and it works better.
It’s very easy to accidentally bend tweezers using them to remove a stopper! I don’t think that’s a huge deal - just buy a cheap set of tweezers and dedicate them to just removing stoppers. But don’t use your good tweezers - I learned this the hard way!
I buy tweezers from the Dollar Tree for these exact purposes. I also use them for doing nail art and crafting. They even have the little tiny ones that are great to have for these kinds of things.
Anyone who tells you powder products that are a year old are expired is overreacting. If your powder products are kept outside the bathroom and used with clean brushes, they should last for years. Even if the formula deteriorates, for example, the pigment has gone drier and less opaque, you can still revive them with a tacky primer and by wetting your brush with setting spray after loading your brush with product. I’m using palettes and blushes from the time of the 2017 makeup boom, and they’re still going strong. If germs concern you, you can spray your makeup with isopropyl alcohol (which is also great for cleaning your brushes) . The only indications that a product is no longer usable is when it smells bad or the formula separates. Edit: if your mascara is dry, you can revive it with eye drops.
About mascara...the FDA recommends throwing it away 2 to 4 months after opening and using it to avoid eye infections. Which is something I like to point out every time I have the chance.
Underconsumption may be a term for something that’s been around forever (see “slow consumption” or “mindful consumption/shopping”), but I’m into it. I’m treating makeup shopping like grocery shopping: I don’t go in without a list and there are several essentials I need to pick up. I’ve done my makeup without foundation, concealer, brow products, or mascara before. Feels great to shop less while making a dent in my collection that is definitely a product of overconsumption (thank you 2010’s and addictive tendencies)
Yep! Both mascara and concealer go in my bra before i start my makeup. By the time I'm ready for either step, the product is warmed up and much better application. (Lots of concealers work better with warmth of finger to blend - this makes it already warmed up, so can blend with sponge or brush same as with fingertip)
Wonderful video, Kelly 😊 VERY helpful. Another trick for mascara that's drying-out (but not yet expired): if you wear contacts, try adding a drop of saline solution or re-wetting drops. Keep adding it drop-by-drop until you get the consistency you want. I've been doing this for literally DECADES.
I’m so happy you made a video about this! As a millennial makeup girlie, we used to use ALL of these tips and I myself even got swept up into the overconsumption culture. The warm mascara and the flipping felt tip is coming back into my life 😍
THANK YOU for pointing out that tinted moisturizer/skin tints are basically foundation + moisturizer and/or serum. It's amazing how much you can customize a base product really. Also blonzer is basically bronzer + blush and maybe highlighter? I have all those products already I don't NEED the blonzer and I have to keep reminding myself of this 😂
I really just stopped paying full price on the vast majority of my personal care items. I get what I need on Prime Days, Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and whenever Ulta has good sales. I only buy backups if the discount is really good and if I'm absolutely going to use the product. It just makes things so much simpler and more cost efficient.
Loved this video kelly. So necessary. Ive seen a few people throw away their stuff for the sake of underconsumption and… yeah the products werent even half empty 😭
Loved these tips! I’m glad people are starting to focus more on using up what they already have. I know you mentioned cutting the tube of your sunscreen and decanting it, but LabMuffin Beauty here on UA-cam has mentioned that putting sunscreen into a different container can affect its SPF, so that’s something to be aware of (I trust her cosmetic chemistry knowledge)
Woah the tips that u talked about were really interesting ive never thought about a lot of them! And this underconsumption trend just seems like finishing your products to me hahah
Loved this!! I love to dip into multiple shades in an eyeshadow palette to get different colours because it's a palette... Colours are meant to be mixed in one, just like a painters palette!
13:01 for this hack keep on mind (especially with sunscreens!) That cutting open the products or moving it to another container can oxidize the product leading to it no longer working. Research the product to see if its safe, if not, throw it away!
My pet peeve are serums in dark glass bottles with eye droppers. Several times when there wasn't enough serum left to get anything in the dropper I have made the mistake of turning the bottle over to get the final little bit of serum out and a lot more was still in the bottle, but now I've poured it all out and wasted it. This just happened with a very expensive serum.
Love this! I also find a lot of powders can just be broken up and pressed down smoothly with a flat object without any alcohol or water if you just make sure you press down hard enough!
I stopped watching a lot of my favorite beauty youtubers because they continue to recommend new products but I don't need anything. I already have so much and I'm trying to get through it all. Thanks for this video! It was refreshing.
I don't know but seeing your eyeshadow hit pan on you see in underconsumption core gives you that good feeling. Its hard to explain 😅 smiling that this thing has been with you through everything 💗 the feeling of special
Thank you for doing this, you see so many creators that grab EVERY new thing, I can tell that are more conscious about what you purchase, and consume. For example you only using cruelty free products, and try to curate your collection.
I also started deck of panning which is a way more fun part of project panning in a no buy , it is sooooooo good to be more concious about your makeup usage ,purchases and money spending
Yes I saw that Sephora has a recycling program now with Pact, I love to see us talking about consumption and more thoughtfulness around what we do with our stuff and what happens to it after we are done with it, if we ever finish the products!!!
For repressing, my husband got an inexpensive set of dental tools off Amazon for doing models (Warhammer), and I started borrowing them for repressing and depotting and such and they're perfect! ❤
This is a excellent reminder, as a millienial I use many of this tricks couple years ago! Create new makeup with mix, like Rare beauty mix blush with highliter, we are more creative many years ago with out makeup! You are so refreshing with all over consumming 💛 I sub !
Fun video! Great tips! One of my favorite things to mix is foundation. I often mix things that are too matte with things that are too dewy. And also foundations that are too dark with ones that are too light. I have a gloss that’s getting really low and am excited to pry off the stopper!
I’m that girl, that has always cut open the tube of the tinted moisturizer or just face cream and put it in a zip lock bag and used a Q tip to use every last drop!! Since literally the year 2000. ❤ we all did it. We didn’t call it project pan or underconsumption. It’s just a what we did. Same with the eye drops in the mascara.
All of those tips i used to do it all! Especially back then when i worked part time and didnt want to spend another $10 or $40 on a product so scooping everything out gave me between 3 days to 2 weeks which is great so i have enough product until next paycheck 😆
One item that helped me a lot with using up my makeup is a metal spatula. I can remove the stoppers and scrape product out of the bottle, or destroy the powder finely for repressing. I also use it for jar creams to avoid putting my fingers in it. A very worthy tool😊
Mascaras have stoppers, too! I had just thrown away a mascara not because it was expired or that I was done with it, but I simply couldn't get any more out of the tube besides on the tippy-tip, which made it way too hard to use. I tried your suggestion for taking out stoppers, and there is a ton a product left in there! And the mascara works way better than the way it was originally! That makes me wonder if mascara function is also a product of how the stopper works rather than just the formula and the wand. This mascara is now ultra-impactful, whereas before, it was a "natural look." Thanks for these tips! Sure wish I had known this before I trashed my Chanel midnight blue mascara, which was not expired yet.
for the mascara thing - i usually just stick the mascara tube in my bra right before i start getting ready! by the time i need my mascara, it's all warmed up and ready to go
I just got into project panning and oh my gosh I have saved so much money not buying makeup and using what I have til it’s used up and it takes sooooo long to use up certain products!!! It makes me actually see how long it takes and how I don’t really need 10 blushes and 8 powders and so on because it takes so long to just use one up!!! I am on a no buy for makeup for a long time 🥰 Thank you so so much for making these videos there very helpful and shows that we all really don’t have to buy as much!! ❤️
I’m working on not buying more makeup. I’m not even an influencer and I have a huge makeup collection from being influenced for so many years 😅 The amount of makeup that is expired at this point… Girl lol
I have always done the Frankenstein method to my products because having a super pale foundation and a dark foundation to mix in and make my own custom medium beige shade and this works 9 out of 10 times
I was never a hoarder and i pan ,empty my makeup/skincare naturaly, never doing something extra. My principle is 1 in 1 out, i never buy just to have them, i actually use them and it makes me pleasure to have a curated small container 😅
I found your channel several years ago through your project pan and shop my stash so i was veeery sad when you stopped doing those because you kind of kept me accountable. So happy though that this kind of content is trendy again because it was sooo difficult during the overconsumption hype
I been practicing this pretty much my entire time I've worn makeup, and only throw out stuff that is unfinished if it's expired, the packaging is too broken, or it smells bad.
Great video! Over the past few weeks I’ve been turned off of makeup videos because the message seems to always be ‘buy buy buy’. Love the tips you gave. I’ve been making my own cocktails of primer and foundation for a while. I know the latest push has been single shade eyeshadows but it drives me crazy that the recommendation is to go buy a new single shade. Just whip out an underused (or regularly used) pallet and use a just one color
I have been doing this for years! I use wooden coffee stirrers, plastic spatulas from Ulta or Sephora, or last drop type tools to get everything out. I use long handled makeup spatulas to remove shampoo, conditioner, and lotion from the bottles. I scrape every bit of lipstick from the tube and put it in a clean empty old eye shadow compact. Bonus if it has a mirror! It is a great way to carry your favorite lip shade(s) in your purse-just make sure you have a lip brush for application. I also cut tubes of certain products to get the last bits out (not toothpaste). I squeeze as much as I can out before cutting the tube. Using needle-nosed pliers to remove stoppers is best in my opinion. Underconsumption isn't just for makeup products. Remove the pour spout from liquid detergent. You will be surprised how much is left. Companies want you to throw away the container with product left in it and buy a new one. Over the years, I have saved my family a lot of money by not wasting the leftover product. You can also decant some liquid type items such as conditioner, shampoo, shower gel, lotion, etc. from the old container to the new container. Travel jars and bottles are great for containing the remaining amounts of product. Perfect for your next vacation or overnight trip. This is not a new trend for me, it's a way of life!
For cutting open squeeze packages things to note that I've learned over the years of doing this: If your going to use your fingers to get product out (how I started)... ...measure your finger against the packaging to make sure you can get your finger in there. ... for long packages, you can cut again as you use the products up. ... you can put the open pieces into a zip lock bag and keep it upright. My preferred method... I bought thin silicone spatulas of various lengths on Amazon. I scoop all the product that is in the end and put it into the bottom (where the manufacturer put the lid.) I then put the two cut pieces back together by squeezing the cut part of the bottom into the cut part of the end, thereby turning the end into a lid. This has worked for me on all squeezy projects. 🦋👩🦰
Great tips! I keep the upper part, empty it with a spatula or an espresso spoon and use the upper part as lid. This method works like a dream on all the soft plastic tubes.
I’m so glad this got recommended to me - you remind me of how chill, practical and nice a specific side of the YT beauty community was in 2010. It’s so nice to learn some extra tips (I knew some but never attempted to re-press. I might do now!) & have less emphasis on brands “and this is the brand. This is what you need!!” Etc Thank you!
Eyeshadow as blush, highlighter, or bronzer. Eyeshadow can be added to lipgloss for a pigmented gloss. Lip products with good stabilizers against bacterial growth can be used as blush or eyeshadow. Mascara as brow tint. Use concealers for more coverage for less than foundation. These are some tips ive used that work for me and my skin
Love some of the tips I hadn't heard of, like the mascara warming. You had a lot of great tips. I'm watching videos all out of order doing catch-up but enjoying all the ones I've seen. You looked so pretty today.

i one saw a youtube video where the girl didnt know you could sharpen a nyx jumbo pencil to get more product so once the nib ran out shed replaced it but she was using it as a base so she had to replace it every month
If you can't do the underconsumption because of job reasons, for example beauty influencers/reviewers, I would always look into trying to level things iut by donating not just the products but donating and supporting enviormental and social causes linked to the beauty industry. I think that should be the next step ❤

Makeup is expensive! My blush is down to the pan, with just millimeters of product remaining before I finally (very hesitantly) spend another $30 on it....
I have a tip for nail polish. If it dries out or the formula gets too thick just add some drops of nail polish remover inside the bottle. Close and shake. Good as new. I have resuscitated quite a few bottle with this. Just be mindful that the more you add the more liquid your polish will become.

@@marygracefeltonIt lost on popularity like the whole of beauty youtube to be honest. I think it was in it's peak over 5 years ago with project pans, no buys and anti-hauls. Tik tok makeup girlies always reinventing the wheel with a new name when they bring this stuff back.
@@marygracefeltonI think people still do this. But project pan is usually for makeup/cosmetics. "Under consumption" seems to be more generalized.
They're both the same thing so why worry about kids making yet another word for it? Project Pan was just another buzzword for minimalism
@@MsCarterElise Seconding this!! I suggest marking them with colored tape to differentiate from other pairs.
I recomend a multi tool. Gerber makes some nice keyring sized ones with smaller plier heads for lipgloss and concealer holes.
So am I one of mine is 7 years old & it smells of nothing & is like the day I opened it
You are sooo right. No water, no bacteria. I have powder Bare Escentuals from 1984. Some of which I wish I had more of.
@@meepenjaap7999naaaah that’s way too old 😅 even if it’s clean you shouldn’t be using a 50 year old makeup product
Any liquid product that dried out can also be rehydrated with Duraline.
About mascara...the FDA recommends throwing it away 2 to 4 months after opening and using it to avoid eye infections. Which is something I like to point out every time I have the chance.
I use an expired mascara to cover random gray hairs. The brush wand works great for this purpose.
Under consumption is literally just how normal people use products. Rich people are so out of touch it baffles me
Underconsumption may be a term for something that’s been around forever (see “slow consumption” or “mindful consumption/shopping”), but I’m into it.
9:34 BYE I vividly remember a beauty guru who recommended putting a mascara in your bra so that it warms up
I've always done that lol
itty bitty titty committee just puts it in between our legs 😅
@@MegNHiltsame!!
That was my first thought lmao just stick it in between until you need it 😅😅
And eye safer!
Does this work with waterproof mascara?
@@ndGoodNiteI use Inglot Duraline to revive waterproof mascara, but that might be counterproductive cuz it requires buying another product lol
@@ReikoNemo good to know tho, thanks
I do this with brow gel too
I’m so happy you made a video about this!
As a millennial makeup girlie, we used to use ALL of these tips and I myself even got swept up into the overconsumption culture. The warm mascara and the flipping felt tip is coming back into my life 😍
I always cut lotion tubes in the middle when it seems like you can’t squeeze any more out and there’s always several uses you can scoop out!
THIS is a trend I can finally get onboard with
THANK YOU for pointing out that tinted moisturizer/skin tints are basically foundation + moisturizer and/or serum.
This is now my favorite series from any creator I watch. Love Makeup Musings! ❤
This is why I now buy only minis. I’m never able to use up a regular size makeup product before it expires 😢
Duraline is an excellent product to revive old creams and even mascara. Plus mix it with powders to create a liquid liner.
Loved this!! I love to dip into multiple shades in an eyeshadow palette to get different colours because it's a palette... Colours are meant to be mixed in one, just like a painters palette!
Stop it the clip on the broken compact 0:15 is GENIUS!!!! Definitely doing that for my broken Kosas powder
And the constant, almost rude, pushing of codes and affiliate links. Ugggghh.
I joined reddit just for the pan porn sub. It's so satisfying when someone posts like, an old Anastasia palette that's fully panned.
I also started deck of panning which is a way more fun part of project panning in a no buy , it is sooooooo good to be more concious about your makeup usage ,purchases and money spending
I think you mean "deck!"
@@kimberlysh88 oml 😂
So many good tips and reminders for us "regular" people who should be using up what we have instead of accumulating.
Fun video!
Same with the eye drops in the mascara.
omg speaking of using things in new ways, the elf peach liquid color corrector is such a pretty blush shade I loooove using it that way
My favorite cream eyeshadow dried up, so I added a drop of glycerin and stirred it up. Good as new!
also regarding eyeliner/eyebrow pens- store them upside when you start feeling them getting dry! (: loved this video
Finally a good trend lol
All of those tips i used to do it all! Especially back then when i worked part time and didnt want to spend another $10 or $40 on a product so scooping everything out gave me between 3 days to 2 weeks which is great so i have enough product until next paycheck 😆
One item that helped me a lot with using up my makeup is a metal spatula. I can remove the stoppers and scrape product out of the bottle, or destroy the powder finely for repressing. I also use it for jar creams to avoid putting my fingers in it. A very worthy tool😊
Great discussion for this video to counter overconsumption.
Sure wish I had known this before I trashed my Chanel midnight blue mascara, which was not expired yet.
for the mascara thing - i usually just stick the mascara tube in my bra right before i start getting ready! by the time i need my mascara, it's all warmed up and ready to go
that's genius
When I was little, I used lipstick as blush! 😂😂
Also, it works if you use a liquid lipstick, particularly a moussy one. ❤
yes, i like using the nyx smooth whip lip creams as blush!
Kelly you’ve been killing it lately with this content. Super insightful. Love it.
I use an old fork to get the stopper out.
This is me too!!🙌
I found your channel several years ago through your project pan and shop my stash so i was veeery sad when you stopped doing those because you kind of kept me accountable. So happy though that this kind of content is trendy again because it was sooo difficult during the overconsumption hype
I would also recommend cleaning your tool well before removing stopper...
When I worked at Ulta, that's how we fixed broken demo products; alcohol and the back of a spoon.
Loving the new background, the new apartment really taking shape.
For cutting open squeeze packages things to note that I've learned over the years of doing this:
If your going to use your fingers to get product out (how I started)...
...measure your finger against the packaging to make sure you can get your finger in there.
... for long packages, you can cut again as you use the products up.
... you can put the open pieces into a zip lock bag and keep it upright.
This is what you need!!” Etc
Thank you!
Mascara brushes can be also sent to wildlife animals rescues. They clean tiny babies with them.
Thank you so much!! I was out of my favorite lawless lip gloss, pulled the stopper out, and now I'm not lol. Those were a lot of good ideas! I love your channel and your content! Thank you for all you do!
I loved this video. As someone who is broke, often times, if I have something that runs out, I can't get another one. So, this video is helpful. Thanks.
OMG!! I've never thought of this! My NARS concealer is on its last leg, so I'll be taking the stopper out today!! Thank you Kelly 😘
I bought tiny spatulas and get so much more face product out of things now, especially after I break them open
i one saw a youtube video where the girl didnt know you could sharpen a nyx jumbo pencil to get more product so once the nib ran out shed replaced it but she was using it as a base so she had to replace it every month
Good grief
As it should be. There are so many toxic influencers!
If you can't do the underconsumption because of job reasons, for example beauty influencers/reviewers, I would always look into trying to level things iut by donating not just the products but donating and supporting enviormental and social causes linked to the beauty industry. I think that should be the next step ❤
This was the most interesting and inspiring video that I have watched in such a long time! Omg I want to go play mixologist with all my makeup products!! 😅
I absolutely love that you make these kinds of videos! I enjoy listening to you when I’m doing my make up in the mornings. I hate when the video is over though. Keep them coming! You have the best ideas!
Kelly this is one of the most helpful videos I’ve seen! Thank you!
