    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Two golfers get rowdy when they see William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) walking in the middle of their course.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

Xaveric, to say a movie has one singular "point" is kind of missing it. Movies are best when no one character is perfect, and Falling Down is a great example of that. Even Pendergrast, the morally upstanding veteran cop, clearly made mistakes in his life, marrying his chubby wife, retiring from a job he loves, and moving to a shithole in Arizona for her for example. D-Fens is certainly not without his flaws, no one is. But a simple fact of movies is that different people will watch the same movie and identify most with different characters.

@Matt S I agree. OP called them selfish, but hes given the wrong reason. When he said 'there should be families pickinicking, he was just making a point at how land is wasted.
They were selfish, because they were bothered by a guy passing through. Almost nothing.

@Matt S if my small garden is the ONLY route to an important place and you are urgent in my presence, I'd let you pass.
Also, do you REALLY think that my small 2x5 metre area garden is comparable to 10,000 square metres of land for golfing?

Anyone notice how this scene is an exact reflection of the Mexicans earlier in the film? Race, class and wealth seperate them yet theyre still one in the same. Both use violence to claim land on top of a hill as theirs. Both threatened by a man who did nothing to provoke them and unwilling to share or listen to reason. This movie has so many metaphors and statements on society, its hard to believe its the same guy who made fucking Batman and Robin!

Steve Kaczynski dude the golfer tried to kill him. If a rock could kill Goliath, imagine a 80 MPH fast hard golf ball. The golf guy and the Mexicans were BOTH in the wrong. D could’ve just went around the hill with the Mexicans as well, dude.

@@stevekaczynski3793 They both threatened his life. It may be argued that the golfers were actually more likely to kill him given the Mexicans seemed to be posturing more than anything or they would have stabbed him when he was making some grandiose speech. The golfers actually aimed the ball in his direction with enough force to legitimately kill him before they even had a chance to exchange greetings. Though the Mexicans return to make an actual attempt as well later on. So both were equally likely to kill him in their attempts.
