Grinding Arbor Build

- Опубліковано 24 сер 2019
- It's time to build a grinding arbor for my KO Lee tool cutter grinder. I need to expand my grinding capability to do ID grinding (Inside Grinding). I'm using 01 tool steel on this project. this is my first time turning it on the lathe. It's a lot different to machine then your old run of the mill cold roll steel. Please join me and discover something new.
Just a note from south central Nebraska with a big thank you for all your high quality content.
I can't get over how great your videos are. They really remind me of the old PBS shows. Love watching you work!
Northwest Colorado, fun to watch and informative. Wins and fails, that's what life is really made of.
I appreciate that you show mistakes in your videos. It's easy for the viewers of these machinists channels to get discouraged when we only see the successes and not mistakes. Love the videos!
Dale, I was the one that you gave the grinder spindle at the Bash. I found out that spindle was for a Covell tool grinder. I started building an arbor for it, but it got put on the back burner for now, I had to get some work out for customers. I need to tear that spindle down and clean up the bearings. Also even though the spindle has a taper there is no draw bar so I need to figure out a way to lock the arbor in place. I didn’t think about relieving the center portion of the taper, I guess I probably should do that.
Watching in Leming TX. Thanx for all you do to share with us.

Love the channel Dale 👍🏻👍🏻
Great video! Greetings and salutations, from Western Kentucky. Princeton to be exact. Doing machine work and tool and die has long been a passion of mine. I should have never retired,... I DO miss my Bridgeport EVERY DAY!
I left tool & die making after my apprenticeship and have enjoyed my time but I do still wish for a Bridgeport and a Colchester Master every Christmas.
I suspect they're too heavy for Santa, he is an old man after all.
Jonathan Tatler ... I have been wishing for a Bridgeport for many years myself. Taking up woodworking is just not the same. I keep telling myself... if I use a high helix end mill, or maybe some shaper tooling, I can do wonders with wood on a mill!! (all the while thinking of what I can make metalworking).
Another cool video sir.... New Zealand here
Love watching you work and sharing your talent with us! In my learning from El Cajon, Ca.
Thanks 😀
I enjoy watching your videos I’m from Odessa Texas
Just started watching your vids. I'm a maker from KC. Learning a lot from your vids, great content.
I enjoy your videos Mr. Dale!!! Your looks and personality remind me of my uncle George. He was an entertainer from Nashville, had a recording studio and played country music with most of the big name singers back in the day... You two could have been brothers!!!
Well, I'm not a machinist I am going to school to be a draft designer. I live and go to school in Waco, TX. Like to heartiness and what you do. I keep watching you and you still make me laugh.

Great job man. Greetings from Brazil.
We had a few KO Lee's they were light weight flimsy grinders . Only used to pull O.D.s on endmills on one , the other had a drill grinding fixture on it
Very nice Dale!

Great video.... Austrakia
Enjoyed Dale!
ATB, Robin
Thanks for your comment 😀
The Netherlands. Like your videos
G'day from Coffs Harbour NSW Australia 👍👍🇦🇺..
I am a new hobby machinist, but O1 steel is a PITA till you find the sweet spot machining it. I found that deeper more aggressive feed cuts improves the surface and gets the swarf to chip instead of dangerous strands. This is with carbide inserts though.
That "total cheat" on the thread cutting is how my dad taught me to do it when I was a kid in the '50s.
Watching from London, United Kingdom. I'm Northern English, from Yorkshire.
The goose neck cutter is nice
Hi there. I have been following you for a bit now. Not a mechanist so a lot of what you do and say is beyond me but interesting never the less. I am a bit mechanical and I guess that is where my interest comes from. I think at this point I am a bit old at 69 and not that interested to be starting out in metalwork. I do have a woodshop and am happy enough doing that. Formally of Newport Beach, CA and now in Longmont, CO.
Thanks learned a lot Chesapeake va
Hi i am comeing from Sweden and like your videos very much.
Thanks
nice job Carshalton England
Dale, at the end when you gave it a spin it looked like it has some run out.

Yep, it definitely does look like it's wobbling quite a bit.
stick a clock on the shaft please
of coarse it did, he made it
Good one, LOL
Remember he has to harden it and grinder it in. So I hope he left material
Looks like I’m not the only one watching from Poland
Watching from Valparaiso, IN, about an hour south east from Chicago.
Thanks for sharing. Rainier OR.
Saludos de MEXICO dale!
Looking forward to seeing you at the good of the land festival
By the way watching from Wisconsin
I have a secret for you. Please pass it on.
To find how much to cut when making a hex/flats. Multiply diameter by .062. that's your depth of cut per side to start. Btw big fan.
Thanks for the video Dale. I live in a little hamlet called Wendling in Norfolk, England. Going through a hot spell here, in the mid 80's F.
Im melting in wethersfield uk.
Was planning to move my machinery into new workshop not today.
Living in east Tennessee now. Originally from Connecticut. Lots of cheap machines in the north east...not so much in Tennessee.
I know that O-1 is less likely to warp than other steels, but considering that it is being used as a high-speed arbor I would think that you would want to leave it slightly oversized, harden, then take it to final dimensions. Let us know how it turned out after hardening!
01 is pretty good knife steel too! Florida
I really like what you said when asking us to subscribe...."if I've earned it". I'm in Minnesota.
From Malaysia 🇲🇾 is watching
As someone who has made a few high speed spindles I suspect youll soon remake this one by turning between centers. Just sayin... nice video. Concord, NH
Mawson Station Australia. Nice presentation voice.
watching every video from grayson, ga.
How’s the weather back in Ga this summer?
@@BuildSomthingCool typical summer, lots of thunderstorms, humid (air so thick you have to chew it), it will start to feel like autumn pretty soon.
OK Dale ,so you want to know where I live. I'm English and live in an engineering desert called France. How on earth can you find tool steel at that price when over here mild steel is more expensive. I have met at least 1 good turner but they are very few and far between. All in all STAY away from here!!!. By the way, I want to get in touch with you to tell you a far simpler method for half angle screw cutting. Thanks for all your enthusiasm and excellent videos.
Hi I come from the UK.🇬🇧
Regards from Frankfurt/Germany.
Im from Texas you goof!
Watching from Sweden. The town is Enköping, where BAHCO was founded.
I love Bahco tools. Excellent quality!
Hi Dale
You are back on track after the grinder cable incident.
Well done.
I am from Bristol, United Kingdom.
Please continue with the great content and no more winding us up to watch our reactions, I refer once again to the grinder cable.
The beard puts a few years on you. You might try a goatee go match your devilish side.
Dale, besides a collet chuck that someone else suggested try to obtain a 3 or 6 jaw chuck with centering aka set true or adjust true that fits your lathe. I myself have two. I would not be without them. They save a lot of time. All the way from Niagara Falls area.
