Thank you Mr Pete. 8 years ago I started watching your videos. I had no idea what a lathe or mill was. Now I work in a machine shop as a full fledged machinist.
Your experience sort of mirrors mine. I started watching Professor Peterson about the same time. I have a small-ish machine shop in the old buggy shed now. I do small jobs for the most part. It has been too much fun!

Reading about the company and the pride they take in what they make and the history that Hamilton and Beach left behind brings tears to your eyes .
I contracted with a local machinery repair/rebuilder occasionally to grind the internal taper on CNC milling machine spindles. The magic of their shop built grinding fixture was their precision spindle, long internal reach and easy to clamp to the milling table setup. They had a clever dresser setup too. Tooling taper angle is the same regardless of CAT size. We ran CAT 40 and CAT 50.
Setup was pretty straight forward. The dressed wheel was brought under the spindle internal taper and the Z axis moved - with the proper taper move accomplished by X or Y move. We would blue the internal taper and only grind to cleanup. Ideally there would be a slight belly in the taper so tool contact was only at both ends of the taper.
Dressing the taper moves the tool deeper into the spindle requiring Z axis position compensation. Tool change position is unlikely to change enough to require correction, but is worth investigating.
This spindle taper dressing resolved tool seating issues and garnered some longer spindle life without removing the spindle for extensive rebuilding and when the spindle bearings were not suspect. Typically this process could be completed in under 4 hours.
I have the Dumore model with interchangeable quills. My grandfather's when he was a tool and die maker for Trico. Still grinds like new. Great company.

Great topic! Sounds like "Spite Chirping" from your friend Jiminy Cricket. I recently harvested a Dumore motorized unit from a small Scott engraving pantograph. I'm looking to adapt it to a tool post on an Oliver woodlathe. Part 2 of this series may be helpful for me....

Those hand grinders look like Dremels on steroids. That safety poster at the beginning reminded me of my 1st day at Buick. I hired in as a Machine Repair/Machinist apprentice. They put me with a journeyman for training. My very 1st job at Buick, we had to adjust the position of a drilling machine column. My journeyman was tightening a bolt with an Allen wrench and a piece of pipe for leverage. The Allen wrench popped out of the bolt and pipe and flew up and hit the lens of his safety glasses. I don't remember if it damaged them. I told him the safety glasses demonstration was not necessary.

Thanks for the tour of your tool post grinders. I once used a dremel tool for a tool post grinder but it got grit all in my chuck and I have never wanted to do anything like that again.

The Dumore Corp. moved to Mauston WI in the late 80's. I worked there in the mid 90's as the Tool Room and Engineering supervisor. In the tool room we had internal spindles that were up to 3 foot long. Dumore at that time made mostly fractional electric motors and gear reduction motors. Hand grinders were the big machine tool sellers. We even made chainsaw sharpeners for the US forestry department. Dumore started out as a automoble vacuum machine in the early teens that was billed as a vacuum that could Dumore. Racine at the time was the center of electric motor production.

I have a nice one in a tall metal box that folds the front down and it is wonderful fit for my Lathe. I ground a shank down from 3/4 to 1/2 for a friend to match all his cutters. They came in a bag and one was oversized. It ground nicely - used white stone that chips and cools. Had it oil soaked for a very fine grain surface. Dry is rougher. Martin
As a non machinist the first thought that popped into my mind was, "what the heck is a tool post grinder," which you quickly answered as you went through this video. So one more bit of knowledge packed into this old woodworkers brain. As my son often says, "my mind is a font of useless knowledge but it sure helps when answering trivia questions and working crossword puzzles." I will be sure to watch the second part.

Thank you, Mr. Pete. That was quite interesting. Last year I bought a used Dumore thread grinding attachment, with high hopes of getting good at using it, but haven’t tried yet. If you are familiar with it I would welcome your input.

Informative. I received a dumore grinder in trade for some machine work I did. It is missing the belt. This video series may provide the inspiration I need to get it in operating condition!
Years ago I bought a Emco tool post grinder for my Super 11 lathe. It was a fine Austrian piece that required removing the dovetail tool post for mounting. I made a new spindle bearing block that has a dovetail in it like a tool holder so it mounts on the tool post in seconds just like a regular tool holder. So finally a tool post grinder that lives up to its name and mounts directly on the tool post. It is very convenient and used more often because it installs easily. Never seen anything like it. But then I cut dovetails in big lathe tools so they mount directly without a holder. You could convert your Dumore to quick mount too.

You can have fun with an angle grinder fastened to the tool post. The wheel is vertical. I repaired my Winnie RV leveler hydraulic cylinders that had welded caps. I used thin cutoff discs to slice through the weld and separate the seal end from the tube. The hydraulic cylinder was in my 10" Logan lathe

Thank you Mr Pete. I have a Atlas grinder like the one you showed in the catalog. It came with my South Bend heavy 9. It has provisions for internal and external grinding. I have not used it yet, I think it's a little too big for my lathe but the previous owner used it. I saw a nice little Do more at a junk store and tried to buy it but the shop keeper couldn't get a hold of the vender to get a price and couldn't except an offer. The next time I checked, it was gone. I guess that means that I really didn't need it but I am still disappointed. I'm happy for you having a nice selection.

I've used Dumores a few times on larger lathes and found that they are an OK work around. Nothing in their line of grinders even comes close to the finish quality and size control one gets with a dedicated O.D./I.D. Grinding machine. But, for the home shop or someone who can't afford, or find floor space, the Dumore tool-post unit is a good substitute.
The funny thing about that is you can often find those machines for dirt cheap if you only had the room! There's one local to me for $250 (after sitting at $500 for weeks) and you can almost never touch a lathe or mill for that much unless it's some old monster going for scrap price.
Lathes and mills are the hobby machine shop backbone and anything that might reasonably fit in a garage or basement tends to have some minimum value while the specialized machines languish around their scrap value once they are no longer desirable to professionals. If I had my dream over sized out building you can bet I would scoop up that grinder, the key seater that's also for sale, that jig borer that was one town over a while ago....

I used a Dunmore with interchangeable spindles for ID and OD grinding on a south bend lathe back in the 60' s the south bend lathe was best for finish because of the bronze spindle bearings and flat belt spindle drive.
Lyle, seeing your Dumore grinders reminds me of a Dumore grinder that I once had (no motor, just the grinder) that, compared to your 4-inch grinder, must have been for much larger than a 6-inch wheel (it originally came from an industrial plant). I gave it to a friend that had a lathe large enough to use it a very long time ago.

There's a guy on eBay that sells this little metal holder for a Dremel rotary tool. You take the nose cap off of the rotary tool and thread the rotary tool into the little metal holder, then the little metal holder can be secured into a quick-change tool post holder. It's a "poor man's" tool post grinder. I'm by no means comparing it to a "real" tool-post grinder, but it's kind of nifty and it only cost s about $20 bucks. Just FYI.

A home shop machinist magazine had an article to make your own or a future Mr Pete video?
I have the very same Craftsman die grinder. I bought it because it has areas machined for mounting into a holder. I made such a mount to make this grinder my first TPG. I then used it to grind the bearing pockets for a better shop built TPG, and haven't used the Craftsman as a TPG again.

On your 3" grinder, on the cord it has a red tag sleeve on that sleeve read what it says. The groundwire went from the plug side to a grounded receptacle screw. on the plug is a wire on the side , probably missing now, l found a ground wire on mine though out the whole cord length, FYI Great videos!

It's interesting to note the progression in power/amps of the motors. 2"--1/14 hp at 1.1 amps, 3"--jumps all the way to1/4 hp at 3.6 amps, 4"--still 1/4 hp but 5.8 amps.

So ideal for grinding tubes where the internal diameter is bigger than the external diameter.
Lyle, can you show us a picture of such a tube - as I don't think I've seen one.

I have a partially finished project somewhere to convert a harbor freight mini 2” bench grinder into a tool post grinder for my Logan. I will finish it after my shop move.
Good project material. Back in the 60s our tool and die had a very nice small chromed metal Precise die grinder which would have been the perfect candidate for your project.
I would lament the loss of the South Bend grinder but only because I am a South Bend fan. The Dumores are nice units for sure.

The only toolpost grinder I have is the 2" one. I have used it for ID grinding a few times.

Mr. Chairman, I rise to a point of order! That is NOT a cricket, it is an audible thermometer. Simply count the number of chirps in 14 seconds and add 40 to get the approximate temp in F. Count the chirps in 25 seconds then (X chirps/3)+4 to get C. Thank you Mr. Chairman, I yield the floor.
I bought a used model 40-011? hand held in a big metal box used. I looked it up and maybe it was issued to the Navy? Anyway, it has a flexible 6-20 shaft. Also came with 10plus 1/4 and small 1/8 bits but only had the 1/8 Collet. I ordered and 1/4 collet and it isn't cheap. It came with a big metal apparatus it screws into like a holder but im not sure how it mounts.

great information, but the price of tool post grinders on ebay probably just went up, grin. I have one for internal grinding, but I am always pretty reluctant to do grinding type work on my lathe if I can somehow avoid it.
P.S. I hope you received the cell phone pics. I sent of my S.Bend Mill yesterday.

Hi thanks for the video I am a 71 year old newbie. I picked up 3 of the dumore grinders at an auction. All of them need a new card could you do a video replacing the non grounded cord with a grounded cord? Thanks
I had one of those double clamping grinder mounts for years before I figured what it was used for. My first TPG was made from a Bosch laminate trimmer- worked ok, but the wheel that came with it was garbage (it abraded so fast that in was unusable). Then in two weeks I found three more; a large Dumore and nice Themac one weekend, and a beautiful "Tom Thumb" the following weekend. I think I have a hand held Craftsman too, but I'm not sure.

I started the video and ended up searching my house for a cricket. Didn't realize it was the video until it was almost over.
I just picked up a small dumore at a sale 1/5hp.
NICE VIDEO How close tolerance can you grind a diameter on a Lathe. .? Thinking grinding rechromed 2 stroke crankpins.
I do not think that you could grind that close on a lathe. It almost needs to be a dedicated cylindrical grinder.
You've always had your nose to the grind stone Lyle, this just confirms it. (this and the red spot on the end of your nose)
i have that very 1st one he shows for the atlas. runs to. bad part it needs a belt. had a leather belt i think. it looks leather lol now i have to find one or rubber one

Are both the 3" and the 4" driven by 1/4 HP motors ? Seems strange that they're the same power ! Less speed, more torque on the big one, I guess.
"Dumore -famous for small motors used in all purposes" - while talking about drills - I thought dentist - when drills were driven by very long drive belts from the motor near the base, all the way along the arm to the drill head - all before pneumatic drills of course.
Dumore 44 3" Oiling Advice: I have one that hasn't been used for 50 years. I'm concerned about firing it up without oiling the spindle. Spindle oil appears to be SAE 0 or ISO VG 5, 7 or 10 which I can't seem to find a local equivalent or even on Amazon. Should I be concerned about oiling? If I should oil, any locally available suggestions? Thanks!
I really do not remember what are used. But I remember at the high school when I bought a new grinder. It came with a little tubes of oil from Dumore. I have no idea of the grade. Check their website.

When you clamp that small Du-More onto your lathe, if that doesn't ground it, no piece of wire is going to. Ron W4BIN

My story, Soom years ago on hywy 101 on the Oregon coast, I was haeded north past a sign Estate sail, it was late in the day and they where packing things up but still open. Went in side looked around, rule of thum, open any box an see, this metal box on the green side with a price tag of 10$, had in it a #14 Tom Thumb with all the goodys including the inturnel grinder atachment, the tools, oil can and so on, Then behind me there came a female voice ( where is that router I saw ) I'm thinking is this what she is wanting, My hands are on it no way lady . So off to the cashear and I felt I was steeling candy fome a baby, 10$ price tag. my knees where sweating as I was paying for it. My club member found it hard to beleve. and yes I know on Ebay how much they are selling for. God stike me dead if this is not a true story
You will never see another one in 500 lifetimes at a garage sale. I know that feeling, and cannot get my wallet out fast enough. I can actually feel my armpits squirting perspiration
@@mrpete222 I also have Master Lathe Mfd by Masterson Engineering Co. of LosAngeles Ca with the complete wooden tool box, I looked one up on Ebay and it sold 17 times more then the one have with no tool box. My feelings are I wish I could follow you a round Mr Pete and pick up your crums
