Jigging STREAMERS on the EURO Rod

- Spent a cold, December morning jigging streamers on a Eastern, PA limestone stream. Had success on my new jigged sculpin pattern called the Honey Badger Sculpin in size 10. It was winter mode fishing, as the water was low and clear. Staying below the fish and using a stealthy approach was key.
I give you some tips on how to fish jigged streamers. It is a super effective technique and you should consider adding it in your fishing tool box.
Hope you enjoy and tight lines!

Hey hey Cory! Awesome streamer video, gotta try to tye up a few of them. I’m not a real streamer guy but you got my curiosity pumped up. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻.
Thanks so much, Scott. Sometimes it just has to be streamer time!! Appreciate you watching and commenting!
Always a nice day on the river… you did very well with a streamer ( sculpin ) good job on explaining ( back to school ). Every cast is a fish and every day on the river you learn something new. Good job.
Much appreciated! Thanks so much for watching and tight lines to you!
Always good to be on the river…. You did well with the streamer explaining ( back to school ) every cast is a fish, and you always learn something new on the river. Good job…
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really appreciate your explanations for reading water and how you’re working through each piece. Very helpful education!
Glad I can help. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Tight lines to you!
Another great video Cory. Thanks for sharing your thought process as far as your approach. It's nice to put that many fish in the net under those tough conditions with only one pattern. Great job...again. Another pattern to put on my tie list.
Thanks, Frank. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Tight lines to you!
Hey Cory. Found your channel and really picked up my game with euro nymphing through your thoughtful advice. New to fly fishing overall but the euro game has got me catching more fish. Really loving the action compared to spin fishing. That’s my home stream. I fished it a lot with spinning gear and rapala jerk baits and always with great success. Gonna try it with streamers on my new 10 6 3wt moonshine.
Glad you found it, Joe! And glad the videos are helping. You have yourself a great home stream. Always love fishing there. Continued success with fly fishing and tight lines to you!
I am glad I came across your videos. I enjoy each and every one. I noticed at about the 5:40 mark one was rising underneath the bridge! Great message on steering clear of redds this time of year. I too have had success lately on streamers, in my case small wooly buggers. Sucker spawn fly dead drifted with split shot above has been good too. Cheers and thanks for your videos. Best, Sam
Thanks so much, Sam! I just went back and looked and you are right. Totally missed it! There were some small BWOs and midges popping every now and then. Glad you are finding success. Cheers to you, as well.
Hey Cory!! Cold weather/cold water can be tough but you make it look easy and fun!! Love your tips on euro jigging the streamer and staying in contact. Makes me want to layer up and get out there!! Thanks and tight lines!
Layer up, Vinny! There are fish to be caught! Appreciate you watching. Thanks and tight lines to you!
That’s super subtle movement either the rod tip. Great descriptions. New to your channel, really great content. Thank you.
Appreciate it, Scott. Thanks for watching and subbing. Tight lines to you!
Great stuff Cory! I love that you show the little streams that we pass by without giving thought to. Thanks!
Thanks so much, Jon! Sometimes they are right under our nose!
Far from a passed up stream.. that water gets heavy pressure. Great day on the water there!
It sure does, Trevor. Appreciate it!
Great video as always, I have to find some confidence in jig streamers. I always feel like I’m moving them to much. You did really well. I fished there last week and really struggled with nymphs. I only caught 2.
Appreciate it, Shawn! Sometimes slower is better with them. I feel like I am just crawling it along/dead drifting it. Really love that little stream. Just a gem.
Awesome video man. Jig streamers on the Euro rod is definitely a great way to put a lot fish in the net.
Appreciate it, TroutFlies! Yes, it is a great technique for sure.
Only been on the water 2x in a month due to a move & (for me) figuring out where they are this time of year can a challenge so nice seeing where they were for you.
Glad you’re not giving up the Creek but always drives me crazy trying to figure it out…better for the stream’s residents when you don’t!!
Tim, this creek reminds me a lot of Spring Creek in Central, PA. It is mostly shallow with a few deeper holes. Because it’s mostly shallow, the fish tend to be spread out throughout all of the stream and as it gets colder, then can still be in faster water….just slightly less faster if that makes sense. Once it warms up they can be in all the likely areas. It get a ton of pressure, so your drifts really matter. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum yep sure does. Been on the Tully & Valley recently and seen the same (December). Thanks for the small pointers, see you on the water! Tight lines!
Take a look at the name of the red barn in the video ;-)
@@jeffsmecker2804 🤫 (saw it thanks)
@Old Dominion Trout Bum Thanks for continuing to put out great local content. Education is priceless. Tell me what's your rig setup (fly line, reel, etc.)?
Appreciate it, Kevin! I was using a T&T Contact ll 10ft 2wt. My reel is a Ross Evolution LTX 4/5. .22mm Cortland braided Euro Line. My leader is approx 22ft of .16mm Bi-color Pezon & Michel mono to my tippet ring. I have about 5ft of Trouthunter 5.5x tippet. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Hey Cory strong work as usual. Curious why you switched from the sempe mono to pezon and michel. Different properties?
Appreciate it, Greg. They are very similar, except I like that Pezon’s colors pop more and it also holds its color a lot longer than Sempe. Also, it seems a little slicker to me gliding through the guides. Sempe is a VERY close second and you can’t go wrong (plus it’s easy to find in the states). You can only get Pezon from overseas.
agree the sempe’s colors don’t pop as much as i would like, i’ve fished it in 4.5x and 5x. will the try the P&M one of these days
Nice one Cory, what a great day! Geez that is sure an effective streamer pattern!
Thanks, Steve! It is a good one! Cheers mate!
Good job fishing winter water! Good you could get out and chase some solid browns! Tightlines
Thanks, Craig. Always great to get out…even in the cold! Tight lines!
Nice Video Corey! Glad you're back at it!
Thanks so much, Uni. Good to be back!
Another Great video Corey! Trying to catch up but I've learned a lot from you. Trying to apply better content to my channel by doing things the more correct way. Coming from the Bass fish world, euro nymphing is so fun! Also thx for sharing your Jig streamer, looks good, one of my favs is similar but w a pink bead, however I feel the muted colors often work better in clear low flows.. Anyways great info! Take care, Steve
Thanks so much, Steve! Glad I can help you. That jig streamer is one of my favs. It’s a good one. Appreciate you watching and thanks for your comments!
Just love this guy.
Thanks you! I had an awesome teacher!
Great job Cory!!! Nice hat too!!! I have to take a trip out East n check that water out sometime Pgh area is horrible!!!
Thanks Scott! That Simms hat is a warm one for sure. The eastern waters are on great shape!
Fun little creek, you killed it.
Thanks so much, Eric. Appreciate you watching.
Great video, neat little urban stream! I was wondering what pack you use, and if you like it? Amazing job covering the water as usual, and I look forward to a tying video on the Honey Badger Sculpin!
Thanks, Justin! It is a great little stream that goes right through town. I use an old Fishpond Encampment waist pack. I am on a never ending search for the perfect waist pack. I have tried and owned them all and keep coming back to it. The net slot is awesome and the support is awesome. I am a minimalist so the size is perfect. The only negative is that it isn’t waterproof. So I carry a C&F waterproof box for my flies and everything else is in waterproof bags so nothing gets wet (as I am always wading deep). I’ll probably be sticking with it until it falls apart because I can’t find one that is as comfortable as this one. The Honey Badger video will be coming soon!
Thanks for the info! I have been using a slingpack for a long time and everything has been getting wet if I wade up past my waist. I was thinking about trying something new.
Thanks Cory! I fish all winter but I do not do much streamer fishing ,I am looking forward to the tying video for this streamer and will definitely throw it.
Thanks for watching, Dale! You will enjoy throwing jig streamers, especially this time of year. Tying video will be coming in the near future.
Nice work as usual my friend.
Appreciate it, JB! Honey Badger don’t care that it’s cold!
good tip, i wil try this streamer pattern, here in belgium depending on the weather i always end up without fish around early november, hopefully with this pattern and better technique i wil grab some trouties:-)
Appreciate it, Pano. I’ve done a video on it. It’s a fish catcher. Good luck to you and thanks for watching. Schol!
What are looking for in winter water? I understand usually the slower deeper pools. But is there anything else you are looking for? Sometimes deeper slower pools can be vast. Also sculpin jig tying vid please.
Hey Preston…you are correct. Usually you are looking for slower, deeper water. But some streams don’t have a lot to choose from, like this stream. It is very shallow, with an occasional deeper pool. So the fish tend to be spread out throughout the creek. They will be in slower, shallow water with larger softball size rocks on the bottom. Just looking for slight depressions as well. When I’m moving through faster water, I look for the water that isn’t as fast (if that makes sense). The tend to move to it and also hug the banks. Or any rock that will slow the current a bit. Hope this helps.
I’ll be coming out with the sculpin pattern in the near future.
I think I recognize that stream, Cory! A video on tying that honey badger sculpin would be great!
It’s a great stream, Jeff! I’ll be putting out the video in the near future. Thanks for watching!
Nice work Cory ! Love this killer pattern. Looks like it doesn’t snag up too much! Would love to tie some up in the future ! Are you coming out with a tutorial, or can I find it out already? Solid day of fishing, excellent video!
Thanks, Antonio! It’s always great to be out, even in the cold. I’ll be coming out with a video on it in the near future. Tight lines, my friend!
Great fishing, meticulous break downs, and strategic approaches. Well done. Excited for your continued success. Jig streamers are one of my favorites to throw. I prefer that to articulated streamers. My only question for you is this.....
Do you find you break off on hook sets with 5.5x? I know we aren't full strip setting, but still I find that sometimes I have issues they bust off on setting. Just curious about your perspective. Tight lines!
Hey Mike…thanks so much, bud!
In that stream I was using my 10ft 2wt and my leader was 16mm (5x). That’s why it was using 5.5x. I wanted the tippet to be weaker than my leader. I don’t have a problem with break offs on the hook set. I’m just using the same hook set as if I was nymphing. Between the sharp barbless hook point, the stretch between the tippet and leader, to the protection from the rod tip, I feel pretty confident. The only thing I do different is tie a double Davy to my streamer instead of a single. If I was fishing a larger stream with more of a chance for larger fish, I would have used my 3wt and a 4x leader. That way I could have gone up to 4.5x if I thought I needed to. I still like to get away with as light of tippet as I can just for the quicker sink rate and sensitivity. I do constantly check my line for frays.
Hope this helps and tight lines back to you!
I THOUGHT that was Saucon! THat was my creek when I lived in Bethlehem. I used to fish during my lunch at the Silvex bridge.
It’s an awesome creek, Jason. And Bethlehem is a great town. Appreciate you watching!
Do you use this sculpin only in December or is it something that works all year long? Thanks for posting this and the video on how to tie it as well.
David, I use it all year long. It’s a great streamer. Appreciate you watching!
Thanks for the video, much interesting and fun to watch. How do you avoid snags with a 4mm bead in skinny slow water?
Appreciate it, Pierre! The secret is to keep it moving along and never let it settle. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Great video!
Thanks Joseph. Appreciate it!
Nice video! I have really been enjoying all of you videos! Thanks for all of the work you put into them. I have a question, I’m in the market for a new euro rod and can’t decide between the H3 10’6 or the T andT. What are your thoughts? Have you fished both?
Appreciate it! I have fished both rods and prefer the T&T. It is lighter, more sensitive and the tip recovery is second to none. The H3 is a great one, but I just feel the T&T is one step above. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thank you! I think I’m going to head down to the local fly shop and pick up a T and T this weekend.
You will love the 10’9” 3wt. It’s a great one.
Hey Cory, love your videos! Def would like to see a tying video on that sculpin pattern as well. I live here in northwest Nj ( Sussex County). We do have some nice stocked rivers here but they only stock rainbows. I miss ( MR. BROWNS) and am so jealous of all the wild PA trout streams. I just have no idea what decent wild trout streams in PA are closest to me to try out? Any suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks, Cory
Being in Sussex county, you are really close to some great PA trout fishing. I would highly recommend the book "Keystone Fly Fishing". It is the bible to PA. You will find everything you need by region. Thanks so much for watching and I'll will be doing a video on my sculpin pattern in the very near future.
Nice fish Cory.. honey badger is that micro polar chenille and rabbit strip looks interesting.. I want to tie some up.. also did you stiffen up your leader? Good job love the show
Appreciate it, Fudd. It is micro polar Chenille and a squirrel Zonker strip. Same leader in have been using. My tippet was 5.5x trout hunter. Thanks for watching!
That was like a bass blow up! 💥 🎣🤣 I need to remember with my Euro jig streamers that they’re not regular steamers. Jig, twitch, or drift them, don’t strip them!
Haha! It was like a bass! When you just twitch them along or let them ride the current, sometimes they just can’t stand it. Appreciate you watching, Geoffrey.
@@OldDominionTroutBum I enjoy your content 👏 . As a 10 year fly angler turned Euro/tightline guy in the past year, it truly has changed my time on the stream, for the better! Watching content like yours, along with Daniel/Olsen/Egan content has been a great way improve my tightline tactics.
cigar and fly fising, man I subbed now. Do you ever fish out west?
Haha-nothing better! I do fish out west. I've done a Madison River video. I'll be making 2 trips out there this year. Thanks for the sub!
@OldDominionTroutBum if you ever decide to go to Wyoming or Colorado I could recommend some less known spots that are highly productive cutthroat fisheries. They are off the beaten path but you fishing and filming style would really do them justice. Hope your upcoming summer is productive and fishy!
@kfjcnrlkvlkvg appreciate the offer! Sounds awesome. I’ll be sure to take you up on it if I get out there. Hope your summer is fishy as well. The west is a beautiful place!
What are your most common size streamers and bead sizes for our euro rig?? I heard you say size 10- 4.0mm!
Hey Cole….I tie them in size 8 and 10. I like to overweight them with 3.8-4.0 tungsten. That way you are always in contact with them and it gives it a great jigging motion.
Another great vid! Do you ever use the jig nymph on point and put a midge nymph on a dropper?
Thanks, Brian! I have and you certain can if you are dead drifting it, but more often than not I’m fishing it like in the video. Appreciate you watching.
Great video… are you throwing a mono rig or a weight forward fly line with that streamer setup. Also curious what tippet strength you were using.
Thanks, Kevin. I have a euro nymphing line to about 22 ft of 18mm bi-color Pezon & Michel mono. My tippet was 5.5x.
@@OldDominionTroutBum thanks Cory I love streamer fishing and just got my first euro rod 10ft 3wt and want to try to throwing it that way. Thanks for the info.
Obligatory "warder" comment.
Really enjoying your commentary and thoughts, Cory. Kinda gutted I found your channel so late in my euro journey. Some thought provoking stuff.
Haha. My wife always gives me hell about my “warder” as well!
Thanks so much and glad you found the channel, Steve. Never to late! Appreciate you watching and tight lines to you.
Amazing videos man! What gloves are you wearing?
Thanks, Ryan! The are Orvis fingerless fleece.
Cory, Are you saying it’s streamer time. Haven’t switched from nymphing yet. Still picking up a fish or two but not more. Thanks, Tony
It’s a great time of the year for them, Anthony. Just another tool in the bag.
Hey Cory!!! Was tying up some streamers today and was wondering what leader formula are you using when jigging micro streamers? Is it the same as your micro leader?
Hey Joe….Yes, I was using my micro leader. It works great when jigging streamers. Tight lines and thanks for watching!
If you fish that creek when the waters up you’ll catch twice as many they love streamers there
Oh I have, Sam. I fish it often. It’s a good one. Thanks for watching.
What is your line and leader setup when your concentrating on streamers
Hey Magic. It depends on the water type/fish size. But a normally just use my micro leader of straight 5x or 4x (If I was fishing water where I was catching a steady dose of larger fish all day maybe 3x). No need to over gun and over think it. Most people think you have to have a different leader (and a heavy one) when doing this. Most of the time thinner is better.
When fishing these Jig Streamers, is it best to use a heavier butt section leader or can you adequately cast them on a micro leader?
I was using my same micro leader. It’s still extremely easy to cast and accurate.
Is that squirrel or rabbit strip that you used for the tail?
Hey Scott, it’s squirrel. Appreciate you watching.
Could you share your line, leader, sighter and tippet setup? Thanks.
I use a braided core, euro fly line (cortland 22mm level). From that it is level 18mm bi-color, pink/white Pezon & Michel mono (or Sempe)…approx. 22ft to a tippet ring. My tippet in this video was 5.5x trout hunter. It’s the same setup when nymphing. I’ll just use a little heavier tippet when I jig streamers (4x-5.5x). Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thank you. Your line/leader had me a little confused looking at the video because it looked like your leader was bi-color.
What rod,reel,leader combo😊?
Tomas, in this video I’m using a T&T Contact ll 10ft 2wt with a micro leader:
You can see my leaders setup here:

Churchhill? What's your favorite?
I'm a big fan of a Dominican. Macanudo, Ashton and Arturo Fuente are some of my favs. I smoke a lot of JRs while fishing, because I've been known to dunk a few in the stream.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Ha! Nice. I used to indulge in a really nice cigar once a year. Will have to find some occasion worth celebrating and indulge. Thanks for the recommendations!
@@chillipphi I'll always indulge AFTER a nice day on the stream!
What are the ‘reds’ you’re talking about?
Michael, “redds” are the trout’s spawning beds. Appreciate you watching.
As always, great content.
