I watched a lot of these countdowns between Alex and Josh growing up and to this day they make me laugh, get me pumped, and inspire me to try older and newer titles of the very same series they mention (with some exceptions since I never had a Wii or SNES, sue the economy not me). But even now I look back and wonder 'what if I never found these lists?' A _TON_ of these would've just flown under the radar and I would've been less inclined to try other series out, as well as not knowing of a whole new type of music: video game OSTs. So I suppose if either of them see this, tl;dr? _Thank you_ for making these, and I hope whatever you're doing now Alex, you're having a good time.
Christ, this video is nearing 11 years of age. I must've been 7 when this came out, but I vividly remember everything about this countdown. I'm glad it's still up.
Nightmare was actually pretty easy for me once I figured out that I could use missiles on him in his third phase. SA-X was a much bigger problem for me, because it took me a while to realize that there was no trick to fighting it--it's a perfect mirror match, but it's stronger than you, so you just have to fight better than it.
You know, maybe there is something about this that youtube knows will make me watch it again, but once every six months this video gets on my recomended to give it another shot.
I personally would have had the SA-X battle at number one. Everything adds up to the fight with you gaining abilities and having to run, up until you get the Plasma Beam. But when you get it, you dont run into the SA-X until the restricted lab. And it gets killed so you think you are safe. Then Adam says there are no more than ten aboard the BSL and as you are about to destroy the station, guess who attacks? Thats right, the thing you have had to run from this whole time. You get your revenge. The battle itself is epic as well as the music.
Meta Ridley is overrated. Metroid Prime is better, but it still is a padded out HP bar like Thardus and Ridley. That's why y faorite boss n the franchise is Quadraxis or Emperor Ing.
In my personal opinion Metroid™ have always been the best game franchise ever made. Many people may think different, but if i know if Nintendo will make another Metroid™ game for WiiU it is worth buying the console to be able to play the next game of probably one of the greatest videogame franchise ever made. I am from Southamerica so please don't judge if i had bad ortography.
I think Super Metroid Ridlehy always deserves a place in this list because it probably is the hardest boss in any of the 2d metroids by far and also had a build up.
Just because it's hard doesn't mean it's a good battle. All you do is basically spam Super Missiles, Missiles and Power Bombs until its enormous amount of life goes down.
...okay, you got a point there. But I always felt the Prime battle was more epic because there was actually a way to dodge most of his attacks. In Super Metroid (even though it's my favorite Metroid game) it felt more like he was laying a bunch of shit on me and I was laying a bunch of fuck on him, and it kept on going until one of us died.
Cool analysis and great video! Metroid is definitely my favorite video game series. I think my #1 boss battle is with the SA-X in fusion. It was pretty cool to finally kill that thing and then see it come back to save you from the Omega metroid.
Good news to all Metroid fans - E3 have confirmed the making of at least one Metroid, possibly 2. Just keep hoping and there will be more Metroids, as well as more me, though me being forced to take my suit off is kinda annoying, to me that is.

Yeah I agree. Nightmare is so easy it only took me 2 tries to beat him the first time around, now when I play MF again, he's just trivial. Hell, me and my friend had a harder time with that damn spider boss. Now he's trivial too...
When Nightmare from other m showed up and you yelled, " Jesus Christ!", I would have laughed except that the image and sound of Nightmare shocked the hell out of me. That part couldn't have been better. Also, nice choice of song for the credits.

Can someone explain to me why so many people go apeshit over Rundas? I mean, he's cool, and I'm a HUGE Metroid fan, but I personally didn't find him very remarkable. What's the appeal?
From what I gathered: 1- He's Samus's bro kind of. His personality is a little more relatable to Samus (in the audiences viewpoint) compared to the other hunters because he helps her out more. His personality is also cool, no pun intended. 2- He's probably the only one that looked like he was trying to warn Samus of something before his death. 3- Good music, both the battle and the calm one 4- Good looks 5- Compared to the others, cool abilities 6- My personal opinion is that Rundas is kinda like how you scan things to progress in MP1 Prime or as a sceneric interest. Rundas happens to be part of the area we're traversing the same way we scan an object in Prime 1 to open a door. When it comes to sceneric interests, I personally enjoyed scanning random bits of the previous games, it boosted atmosphere. Rundas is the only hunter, despite being corrupted, to stand around and boost off in the distance on some places... I don't know, kinda hard to explain.
He's a little arrogant but not necessarily a bad guy; he's kinda likable in an odd way. The music is great and the battle is quite good. Not best in the series persay but it does stand out amongst a lot of the others.
I think it is the fact that he is a deadpan snarker (is that what they are called?) with the sarcastic salute and his "justice will prevail and all that" line. that and even though I think it is INCREDIBLY overrated and overused on UA-cam, his battle music is awesome (still think Emp Ing final form is better though)
I don't get why you say poor writing about the Ridley battle in Other M. She freaks out about Ridley being there in his original form, not from that he is there. Earlier on the timeline she beats Ridley over and over and every time he comes back, he is modified in some way or another. It makes sense to her that he's back. In Other M it doesn't. Yeah it makes sense he's back, because he always returns, but not in his original form. And who has ever stated that Samus is totally fearless, I sure don't remember anyone (other than fans) stating that. I sure haven't seen her as a total badass without fear. I really don't get why Other M get that much hate, and most of the time the only reason people really have, is, it's not as good as the prime trilogy. So I'm not allowed to like Other M, because it's not as great as Prime? I'm not allowed to like the character of Samus portrayed in that game, because the majority of Metroid gamers think that she's not supposed to be like that? How does that make any sense?

Cutscenes specially here are the most poor way of story telling for a game, on top of that if you make them with a plank with the voice of a woman it gets tiresome, i for one each cutscene wuent to the bathroom or for a snack, i just can't take that much cutscenes.. is not just comparing it to metroid, but from gaming in general, videogames as an interactive media has to find ways for story telling to be a unique and very different experience than what you get on a movie. Cutscenes are just the way games try to become movies.. and OM builds on top of this by making the presentation the only highlight of the game. Now on the subject of gameplay, i do enjoy myself some hack and slash games, but i can say for everyone that due to their core elements they get very repetitive very fast.. On top of that Samus moves very VERY spot on on a 3D space.. with a control pad.. just no. The mechanics are fine enough but again, they don't build up as you progress they just give you different ways to do the same things you've been doing.. every game does it, i know, but this just feels extremelly redundant because of the controls and the shallow mechanics. I confess there are like 2 moments where i enjoyed OM, but the bad thing about this is that they where moments from previous entries.. Now, we got lava, forest snow.. on SM we got.. shit, an alien world, in Prime we got ruins, desert, lava, snow, underwater, cience like building, a flooded forest.. etc. Even there OM falls short.

The one argument he gives to support yours is that by itself OM is a decent action game, and yes, it is.. but action games in nature get, as i said very repetitive and dry out very quick. Yes the controls on Hunters were shit but the gameplay is somewhat decent, and the multiplayer was surprisingly very good. Return of samus was also good, but many people dislike it mainly because of the lack of atmosphere and the lava being the reason behind the progression of the game. Because SA-X's boss fight kinda sucked. Yeah, it's pretty awesome in the middle of the game, but in the end it isn't that much. First form is pretty cool tho.
I love Rundas' theme! It gets me so hyped up for battle! In MP3 when I saw Rundas and his boss music began playing, I just said, "Okay, Rundas. You wanna fight? LET'S FIGHT!!!!" And as I fought him, I never once felt sorry for him because of how the music made me feel. ...But after I killed him and saw the cutscene..."WHAT HAVE I DONE?!"
FUCK YEAH!!! Meta-Ridley was immensely fun, and yes its one of those moments that builds and just delivers on it all, I also love how the temple gives him ritualistic payback after the fight.
Your videos are chronophragic. I started out at 7A.M. after breakfast. 16 hours hater, where has all time gone? And not one second or lol was regretted.
Thardus can be hurt by way more than just the wave beam. Missiles, Super missiles, power beam, even the plasma beam. (If you sequence break, not to mention it is actually super effective)
OHHH YEAH, I loved the Meta Ridley boss fight when I got to it. The music is probably my fave boss battle music from ANY METROID GAME due to its metallic sounds that coincide with Ridley's metal appearance. The fight is awesome, endlessly pummeling the SHIT out of Ridley as he pretty much does the same to you. I love it.

I've been playing Metroid Prime for the first time and it's a pretty good game. I've played a lot of the Metroid games but I was young and didn't understand very much of it. So I have to say the boss's, enemies, story and atmosphere. I love it, and I'm a bit sad that it didn't get a 25th anniversary game like Legend of Zelda, and I didn't even know it was it's 25 anniversary. Also, very great top 10 list!
I have to agree with him about Ridley being the best boss fight in the franchise. That fight was just so epic. And Metroid is one of the top three greatest videogame franchises of all time.
My Top 10 10: Kraid (Super Metroid) 9: Spider Guardian (PLEASE DON'T FLAME ME!) 8: Aurora Unit 7: Nightmare (Fusion) 6: Gandrayda 5: Omega Pirate 4: Omega Ridley 3: Quadraxis 2: Metroid Prime 1: Dark Samus (Prime 3) Sorry if this list seems too focused on Prime. I still have yet to play Other M, and I just really like Prime. The main trilogy are my 3 favorite games, not just in Metroid, but in general. Sorry for any bias.
Only entry I disagree with is Meta Ridley. The battle felt more like a wet noodle fight than an epic battle, with his attacks being easy to dodge yet being irritatingly hard to damage in the second phase. I'd go as far to say that he's the worst boss in Metroid Prime.
Metroid Prime...my favorite game of all time. It is crazy to think that people thought it was going to be dead on arrival. I remember someone from EGM making a bet that it wouldn't even win a silver award. Then the game comes out and gets perfect 10's from EGM. Retro did amazing things with the Metroid universe.

Meta Ridley's cool and all and see why he's up there, but I have to say Metroid Prime is by far the best boss of all time. I say that mainly because of its difficulty by making you use everything gathered throughout the entire game. All Missiles, Visors, Weapons, Bombs, EVERYTHING!!! :)
This is one of my favorite game series. My favorite boss is a 5-way tie between, Ridley(Metroid Prime), Parasite Queen, Metroid Prime(essence), SA-X, and Phantoon (Metroid Other M)
Other Notable Bosses - Omega Pirate - Keeps you on your feet summoning other pirates to attack you, forcing you to shoot it with xray visor and see its skeleton (very cool looking) SA-X - Recurring Boss in metroid Fusion. Stalks you the ENTIRE GAME, then at the very end we see its true form. Ugly as Fk. Kraid - 3 different versions - Metroid, Super metroid and Metroid Zero Mission, we see 3 different sizes of this beast and yet he has an enormous impact in all of them. Chykka - Staged & EPIC
My best friend once had me listen to Enter Sandman while I fought Meta Ridley. It actually made the fight even better. Sorry, but although the music is cool, I just think they may have tried to make it seem too "technical" and not threatening enough. Still, it is a fun fight, I'll give it that. And I freaking LOVE the bosses of Prime 2, the Quadraxis and Emperor Ing in particular. I even love the music for the Quadraxis. It's so fitting!

You place Ridley twice as Meta Ridley, yet not even an honourable mention towards even the Omega Ridley battle, or even the fight against him in Other M. That Ridley theme is kickass just like the Smash Bros Brawl Ridley theme.
I would have loved a reference to SA-X, although you don't fight to kill it, just run yo' scared ass away! In terms of setting the mood of Fusion, you have to admit that the fear of SA-X searching for you kept you on your toes at all time! It scared the shit out of me on several occasions D:
My best guess is that after Other M , Nightmare's organic components were so badly damaged that it was to close to death as possible and when it was transfered to the BSL station and the X parasite infected it, it gained enough strength to move around, which might explain why it looks so damaged in fusion.
Halo series is MY favorite game series of all time. Metroid is my second favorite. Lets just say that I could write an entire book on how much I love both of these game series.
I also just genuinely enjoyed MP1 as a whole, having a unique new 3d look at metroid, which was damn AMAZING for its time. I also liked how you have infinite ammo for your special weapons, allowing for a PERMANENT boost to your weapons systems, overall belittling the power beam. That's what I love about power-ups. Unlike MP2, which I still enjoyed with its wide variety of power-ups, but didn't like the stupid new ammo system. I WANT MY UNLIMITED PLASMA BEAM, NINTENDO! (Hint to MP3, which did)
one question peanut: Do you like Metroid Zero Mission Because I think it's really good... in fact in my opinion is better than Metroid Fusion (and I like Fusion better than Super Metroid so that's saiyng alot)

I'm not allowed to like the character of Samus portrayed in that game, because the majority of Metroid gamers think that she's not supposed to be like that? How does that make any sense?

Cutscenes specially here are the most poor way of story telling for a game, on top of that if you make them with a plank with the voice of a woman it gets tiresome, i for one each cutscene wuent to the bathroom or for a snack, i just can't take that much cutscenes.. is not just comparing it to metroid, but from gaming in general, videogames as an interactive media has to find ways for story telling to be a unique and very different experience than what you get on a movie. Cutscenes are just the way games try to become movies.. and OM builds on top of this by making the presentation the only highlight of the game.
Now on the subject of gameplay, i do enjoy myself some hack and slash games, but i can say for everyone that due to their core elements they get very repetitive very fast.. On top of that Samus moves very VERY spot on on a 3D space.. with a control pad.. just no.
The mechanics are fine enough but again, they don't build up as you progress they just give you different ways to do the same things you've been doing.. every game does it, i know, but this just feels extremelly redundant because of the controls and the shallow mechanics. I confess there are like 2 moments where i enjoyed OM, but the bad thing about this is that they where moments from previous entries..
Now, we got lava, forest snow.. on SM we got.. shit, an alien world, in Prime we got ruins, desert, lava, snow, underwater, cience like building, a flooded forest.. etc. Even there OM falls short.

The one argument he gives to support yours is that by itself OM is a decent action game, and yes, it is.. but action games in nature get, as i said very repetitive and dry out very quick.
Yes the controls on Hunters were shit but the gameplay is somewhat decent, and the multiplayer was surprisingly very good.
Return of samus was also good, but many people dislike it mainly because of the lack of atmosphere and the lava being the reason behind the progression of the game. You got the freedom you can't get in any other series.. thing sorely lacking in OM. Again, decent action game, nothing more.

Cos technically only the first part was a boss, and she wasn't a very long boss, a hard boss if unprepared, but it was pretty easy after the first loss. Also her second form took.. like 1 hit?

Because SA-X's boss fight kinda sucked. Yeah, it's pretty awesome in the middle of the game, but in the end it isn't that much. First form is pretty cool tho.
I love Rundas' theme! It gets me so hyped up for battle! In MP3 when I saw Rundas and his boss music began playing, I just said, "Okay, Rundas. You wanna fight? LET'S FIGHT!!!!" And as I fought him, I never once felt sorry for him because of how the music made me feel.
...But after I killed him and saw the cutscene..."WHAT HAVE I DONE?!"

Metroid games are my favorite. Its amazing to me how the series isn't more popular.
I love the Nightmare theme from Other M in the transitions, that song always gives me the chills.
FUCK YEAH!!! Meta-Ridley was immensely fun, and yes its one of those moments that builds and just delivers on it all, I also love how the temple gives him ritualistic payback after the fight.
Your videos are chronophragic. I started out at 7A.M. after breakfast. 16 hours hater, where has all time gone? And not one second or lol was regretted.
Thardus can be hurt by way more than just the wave beam. Missiles, Super missiles, power beam, even the plasma beam. (If you sequence break, not to mention it is actually super effective)
OHHH YEAH, I loved the Meta Ridley boss fight when I got to it. The music is probably my fave boss battle music from ANY METROID GAME due to its metallic sounds that coincide with Ridley's metal appearance. The fight is awesome, endlessly pummeling the SHIT out of Ridley as he pretty much does the same to you. I love it.

I've been playing Metroid Prime for the first time and it's a pretty good game. I've played a lot of the Metroid games but I was young and didn't understand very much of it. So I have to say the boss's, enemies, story and atmosphere. I love it, and I'm a bit sad that it didn't get a 25th anniversary game like Legend of Zelda, and I didn't even know it was it's 25 anniversary. Also, very great top 10 list!

I have to agree with him about Ridley being the best boss fight in the franchise. That fight was just so epic. And Metroid is one of the top three greatest videogame franchises of all time.

Sorry if this list seems too focused on Prime. I still have yet to play Other M, and I just really like Prime. The main trilogy are my 3 favorite games, not just in Metroid, but in general. Sorry for any bias.
I remember using the early items to defeat previous bosses. It was great annihilating Thardus with the plasma beam, and strangely enough ice beam.
Ridley screaming at me during Metroid Fusion was just surprising
Only entry I disagree with is Meta Ridley. The battle felt more like a wet noodle fight than an epic battle, with his attacks being easy to dodge yet being irritatingly hard to damage in the second phase. I'd go as far to say that he's the worst boss in Metroid Prime.

Just finished Metroid Prime yesterday. Prime will be the greatest game I've ever played and the Metroid Series is also my all-time favorite franchise.

Metroid Prime...my favorite game of all time. It is crazy to think that people thought it was going to be dead on arrival. I remember someone from EGM making a bet that it wouldn't even win a silver award. Then the game comes out and gets perfect 10's from EGM. Retro did amazing things with the Metroid universe.

Meta Ridley's cool and all and see why he's up there, but I have to say Metroid Prime is by far the best boss of all time. I say that mainly because of its difficulty by making you use everything gathered throughout the entire game. All Missiles, Visors, Weapons, Bombs, EVERYTHING!!! :)
This is one of my favorite game series. My favorite boss is a 5-way tie between, Ridley(Metroid Prime), Parasite Queen, Metroid Prime(essence), SA-X, and Phantoon (Metroid Other M)

Without the baby metroid in the mother brain battle i would have lost through the music and the appearance. that music was spine chilling.
Other Notable Bosses -
Omega Pirate - Keeps you on your feet summoning other pirates to attack you, forcing you to shoot it with xray visor and see its skeleton (very cool looking)
SA-X - Recurring Boss in metroid Fusion. Stalks you the ENTIRE GAME, then at the very end we see its true form. Ugly as Fk.
Kraid - 3 different versions - Metroid, Super metroid and Metroid Zero Mission, we see 3 different sizes of this beast and yet he has an enormous impact in all of them.

My best friend once had me listen to Enter Sandman while I fought Meta Ridley. It actually made the fight even better. Sorry, but although the music is cool, I just think they may have tried to make it seem too "technical" and not threatening enough. Still, it is a fun fight, I'll give it that. And I freaking LOVE the bosses of Prime 2, the Quadraxis and Emperor Ing in particular. I even love the music for the Quadraxis. It's so fitting!

i remember beating Metroid prime in the Phazon mines, i was excited since it was hard as hell, and i thought it was the end of the game, that we needed to do one more thing and when we are doing that one last thing, Meta Ridley comes out, and once you defeat him, oh the satisfaction.

You place Ridley twice as Meta Ridley, yet not even an honourable mention towards even the Omega Ridley battle, or even the fight against him in Other M. That Ridley theme is kickass just like the Smash Bros Brawl Ridley theme.
I would have loved a reference to SA-X, although you don't fight to kill it, just run yo' scared ass away!
In terms of setting the mood of Fusion, you have to admit that the fear of SA-X searching for you kept you on your toes at all time!

My best guess is that after Other M , Nightmare's organic components were so badly damaged that it was to close to death as possible and when it was transfered to the BSL station and the X parasite infected it, it gained enough strength to move around, which might explain why it looks so damaged in fusion.

Halo series is MY favorite game series of all time. Metroid is my second favorite. Lets just say that I could write an entire book on how much I love both of these game series.
I also just genuinely enjoyed MP1 as a whole, having a unique new 3d look at metroid, which was damn AMAZING for its time. I also liked how you have infinite ammo for your special weapons, allowing for a PERMANENT boost to your weapons systems, overall belittling the power beam. That's what I love about power-ups. Unlike MP2, which I still enjoyed with its wide variety of power-ups, but didn't like the stupid new ammo system. I WANT MY UNLIMITED PLASMA BEAM, NINTENDO! (Hint to MP3, which did)
