This is part of what made the golden era of the Simpsons so great, they referenced timeless classics instead of whatever was popular at the time. They also integrated them so well you could still enjoy the joke even if you didn't know the reference.
Respect to James I like the John Carpenter The Thing had awesome special effects. Very well done, and it was something different same concept but instead of a monster from outer space anyone could be The Thing.
There is no other internet personality I have stuck with for so long, I have been watching you for over 10 years now. I think this is because not only do you have variety in the content you create, gaming, films, books etc but your tastes are so similar to mine. There are so many films in this list that would be in my top 50, 3 out of your top 5 are also in mine. These are some of the reasons why you've always been such an inspiration of mine, would love to meet you one day. Cheers James.
I don't even think that's the reason. I don't play games, and I'm not that big of a movie guy... But neither one of those factors prevent me to enjoy thoroughly everything this guy does. I'd guess that we all keep coming back to James because it's crystal clear, for all of us, that everything he makes is absolutely driven by the love he has for what he does. Anyway, that would be my theory.
I don't necessarily have one favorite film, but King Kong is probably the most important film to me creatively. Saw it at just the right age, got me into sculpture, stop motion, Ray Harryhausen's work, special effects, and an appreciate for the art of filmmaking. Simply a magical film.
A million thank you’s for including “The Sword in the Stone”! That film ignited a now life-long obsession with all things Arthurian (and is one of only 3 Arthurian films I would recommend, along with “Excalibur” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail).
Easy, here is the top 10 1. Hong Kong 97 2. Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde 3. Crazy Buss 4. Desert Buss 5. Cheetamen 2 6. Cheetamen 7. Action 52 8. Dark Castle 9. Big Rigs 10. Wizard of Oz
I agree, in some parts it doesn't hold up though. But the thing with films today I can always know when something is CG, it's not the look really, it's the animation. The stilted animation of the animatronics actually work in JP's favour whereas animators go too overboard when they animate creatures sometimes.
'...still better than most effects you see today..." Yeah, no, that's bullshit. It is an incredible movie, easily in my top 10, but there is no shame in admitting that it is an older movie.
FlyingShazbot Yeah the T-Rex looks great in rain (obviously because it's dark) but there are numerous scenes where the CGI really shows it's age like when the velociraptors are in the kitchen.
One thing I love about these sorts of lists is being able to see how diverse we all are. You get to see where you are similar but also different to others and that's really interesting to me. For example, I love North by Northwest and Rear Window and I was happy to see them both in this top 25 but I was also quite surprised to see Sword in the Stone on here, which I rarely hear mentioned, and am honestly not all that fond of. It's fascinating to see how someone else views cinema, how they've been influenced by it, their tastes and all that.
Above all, the majority of the films on your list emit an essence of fun and enjoyment. You seem to appreciate the sheer joy of cinema. This was a great watch with a lot of fascinating personal moments - thanks!

I appreciate that even though you have Batman (1989) on this list, you still acknowledge its narrative structure is flawed, unlike Nostalgia Critic, who likes to pretend there's nothing wrong with it.
The special effects in the Thief Of Bagdad (1940) still look better than most CGI. I've seen animatronics used well before in movies, e.g. The NeverEnding Story.
jeez you're like the best at reviews. you don't tend to just elect a classic only because it's a classic. you provide a good summary on why you love each film. love your analysis.
Blade Runner, Alien, The Thing (1980), Invasion of Body Snatchers (1978), Dark Crystal would all be on my list. Great list, you have a lot of courage putting your top 50 out there for the internet mobs to digest.
This was a great list. I was eagerly awaiting this second part and was not disappointed. I thought you were going to mention the movie Rat Race when you were talking about It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Rat Race's premise was so heavily inspired by that movie. Rat Race also featured a lot of great actors and cameos from great actors from its time.
Interesting retrospective. It is beautiful to remember our movies and those that came before. Groundhog Day, Terminator. Gremlins, and Back to the Future are among my favorites too.
I love the Tim Burton “Batman”. When I saw the dark knight I compared it to those Tim Burton films. Even though most people don’t. I think Michael Keaton is the best Batman.
Same happens to me with batman begins i like it more than the dark knight because of the story and Gotham's aesthetic its something that gives gotham a style wich is one of the reasons batman 89 is my second favorite , gotham was perfect in that film
I watched The Great Escape when I was 11 years old while I was in class. I also watched Animal farm that year. I look back and I'm quite thankful that my Teacher had the class/me watch these, I didn't fully understand them at the time, I thought I did, and it made me re-look up these films and stories over and over in my life.
Thanks for sharing your list. I would have added some David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, and more Stanley Kubrick. I feel these three are the most creative directors of all time.
Great list and after nearly a decade of watching James Rolfe I can see how he was influenced by some of the list. My own top 10, and this is chronological as I can't muster the energy and effort to list them in terms of quality: Planet of the Apes, Fiddler on the Roof, The Godfather, Rocky, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Amadeus, Beauty & The Beast, Spirited Away, Marvel's The Avengers, Inside Out.
Ya really, so many major films and such that I feel like I've seen before even though I haven't, only to realize they were Simpsons eps. That show really permeated every pore of pop culture and your childhood if you grew up anytime in around the 90s seems like.
Another one. You remember the episode where Maggie and the other babies lay out a plan to escape the day care or whatever it was they were in? That was a direct homage to The Great Escape and it also uses the same music.
Yeah it's amazing how many movie and music references are in The Simpsons. I grew up in the 90's but still haven't seen enough movies from the 40 and beyond. I watch loads of 70's, 80's and 90's movies. I really need to go back further.
My top five films (in release order, because I could never actually pick a favourite): - Metropolis (1927) - The Producers (1968) - Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - The Evil Dead (1981) - Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008)
10) Bullit 9) Dog day afternoon 8) Groundhog day 7) Back to the future 6) Grand Budapest hotel 5) Schindlers list 4) Goodfellas 3) The sound of music 2)West side story 1) AMADEUS
SWORD IN THE STONE!!!! Man. Nobody puts this movie on their favorites lists, and its in my top 3. Also one of the only disney movies I can still watch and don't hate the songs in it. Props.
I was waiting for these, Thought I would mention them: Christopher Reeves Superman w/Hackmans Luther Papillon w/ McQueen and Hoffman African Queen w/ Bogart and Hepburn Cool Hand Luke w/ Paul Newman Great list James, lots of good pics :)

I like that you picked "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" as your #1 pick. It may not be my favorite but certainly one of my favorite comedies and you described its philosophical tone perfectly. And I totally agree with your favorite scene, the Jonathan Winters rampage! May be the funniest scene ever in all of filmdom!
My top 10: 1. Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) 2. Frankenstein (1931) 3. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) 4. King Kong (1933) 5. Predator (1987) 6. The Back to the Future Trilogy (1985-1990) 7. +Jordan Shaw, Grown Ups 2 is da best movie I've evr sen in ma lyfe. Its a cultural phenomenon that changes the way you see reality while also being an entertaining movie for the whole family. Adam Sandler is a comedic genius whose films rival those of Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick. Sure critics thought it was low brow and panned it but only because they didn't understand the subtle nuances of Sandler's auteur style. Fuck The Godfather, fuck Star Wars, fuck Pulp Fiction; Grown Ups 2 is the best movie of all time.
Thanks for sharing your favorite films with us, James. They are all classics and some I need to get reacquainted with. Also, I know just what you mean about "Jaws" being a "dad film". My dad loves to go fishing as well.
I think T2 jumped ahead, and then JP took it another level - so I say both of them should share in the overall jump. One really proved a photoreal thing could be done, and then the other showed it could be done with things that look like living creatures.
lotius Freddy got fingered is the best movie ever. The talented cast, the amazing cinematography, the intricate plot, the quality humor and a strong message make it a legendary film
I totally agree with most of your picks. Some of my personal favs would have to be: return to oz, repo man, total recall, suburbia, They live, into the Blue, over the edge, heavy metal. I don't know. I could go on and on
This is better than therapy for getting me through tough times. Listening to someone talk about meaning or values and morals, in something they love. Really helps me see the big picture and stop being bother by petty ppl or problems in my life. (edit for spelling)
I think this is a particularly solid list. I watch "top" lists a lot and some seem like they're built for the audience, but this one seems genuine. Glad Alien was at least a runner-up.
Mateusz Kowalski He doesn't watch a lot of cartoons, or at the very least, he hasn't since the 80's. I think his favorites are Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Ghostbusters cartoon.
Hey James was wondering what you think of James Whale's 1932 classic The Old Dark House. I've never heard you talk about it and imo it is the greatest classic film of all time. Very spooky atmosphere and a great ensemble cast including Boris Karloff, Charles Laughton, Ernest Thesiger and Gloria (Titanic) Stuart.
James, you needed the Top List for each genre, as it appears the breadth of viewed films can only do justice to your choices, and honorable mentions left on the cutting room floor.
1. Donnie Darko 2. The Shining 3. Watership Down 4. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest 5. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 6. Alien 7. Jurassic Park 8. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 9. Shaun of the Dead-Hot Fuzz-The Worlds End (Cornetto Trilogy) 10. Evil Dead 2/A Tale of Two Sisters/Battle Royale
Hooray for PeeWee! Have you seen the new one? It's not Tim Burton, but the appreciation for his work on the original is definitely there and Paul Rubens's STILL GOT IT!
Great list, couldn't believe you had Dr Lau on your list as a kid i loved this movie, i managed to get this recently it was wonderful to watch it again.

This is part of what made the golden era of the Simpsons so great, they referenced timeless classics instead of whatever was popular at the time. They also integrated them so well you could still enjoy the joke even if you didn't know the reference.
The list and Simpson references point to a film geek/kid of the 80's demographic.
I'm surprised that The Thing, Robocop, Blade Runner, Alien and Predator weren't on the list.
Alien was a runner up (check description).
@VashDraven James Prefers the Thing from Another World (1951) IIRC

jeez you're like the best at reviews. you don't tend to just elect a classic only because it's a classic. you provide a good summary on why you love each film. love your analysis.
Blade Runner, Alien, The Thing (1980), Invasion of Body Snatchers (1978), Dark Crystal would all be on my list. Great list, you have a lot of courage putting your top 50 out there for the internet mobs to digest.
Sorry to be THAT guy but the John Carpenter The Thing came out in 1982. Sorry, it's my favorite movie lol.
Definitely one of the greatest remakes ever.
WHAT? *MANOS THE HANDS OF FATE* IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE?????????
manos... the hands of... fate...
You ever hear of "Manos"?
I take care of the place while the master is awayy.........
great reviews..a bit mainstream box office .. remember your Forey roots lad. carry-on
#MST3K
Same happens to me with batman begins i like it more than the dark knight because of the story and Gotham's aesthetic its something that gives gotham a style wich is one of the reasons batman 89 is my second favorite , gotham was perfect in that film
andres navarro Perfect as in looking like a studio lot at Warner Brothers?
I watched The Great Escape when I was 11 years old while I was in class. I also watched Animal farm that year. I look back and I'm quite thankful that my Teacher had the class/me watch these, I didn't fully understand them at the time, I thought I did, and it made me re-look up these films and stories over and over in my life.
No Ghostbusters (2016) ? I thought it would be #1 James
Was that sarcasm?
@@crimeexpocon noooo.
@@crimeexpocon yep.
#2 should be sharknado
No he refuses
Thanks for sharing your list. I would have added some David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, and more Stanley Kubrick. I feel these three are the most creative directors of all time.
Jurassic Park will always be in my top ten, it was mind blowing when I went to see it back in '93 and it was a landmark film.
Great list and after nearly a decade of watching James Rolfe I can see how he was influenced by some of the list. My own top 10, and this is chronological as I can't muster the energy and effort to list them in terms of quality:
Planet of the Apes, Fiddler on the Roof, The Godfather, Rocky, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Amadeus, Beauty & The Beast, Spirited Away, Marvel's The Avengers, Inside Out.
My top 50 list: Super heroes, sci fi, and action films
Cinemassacre's top 50: A man of culture.
Wow, now I know where The Simpsons got the idea for the "T" episode
Jayne Sixx and "Bart of Darkness" when Bart broke his leg and watched the neighborhood through his window til he thought Ned Flanders murdered Maud
SIMPSONS DID IT! SIMPSONS DID IT!!
My top five films (in release order, because I could never actually pick a favourite):
- Metropolis (1927)
- The Producers (1968)
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
- The Evil Dead (1981)
- Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008)
Nick Ferrazza oooh, metropolis is amazing!
Seems like the Terminator is threatening him with the gun 😂
10) Bullit
9) Dog day afternoon
8) Groundhog day
7) Back to the future
6) Grand Budapest hotel
5) Schindlers list
4) Goodfellas
3) The sound of music
2)West side story
1) AMADEUS
More like swindlers fiction.
SWORD IN THE STONE!!!! Man. Nobody puts this movie on their favorites lists, and its in my top 3. Also one of the only disney movies I can still watch and don't hate the songs in it. Props.
What's wrong with Disney songs?
My top 5
-Texas Chainsaw Massacre
-Pulp Fiction
-Night of the Living Dead
-Groundhog Day
-Terminator 2
Yes! Groundhog Day! For shits and giggles I like to ask every fans opinion of this. How long do you think Phil Connors was stuck in limbo?
For me it's Shrek 2, Shrek, Shrek 3, Toy Story 4 and Die Hard
@@southbeachtalent I saw a website that said he was in there for about 8 years. I don't know if that's true, but it's still crazy.
I love the Simpsons parody of IT'S A MAD,MAD,MAD,MAD WORLD.
Sammy Lane
"what's the matter with you kid, you told me this stream was shallow!" - Bart waves as the guy's car sinks lmao
i love george mcfly´s laugh :D
Ah ah ah ah.
Thanks, for giving the gist of these movies in such a calm narrative. As I did not watch half of them myself, there's something to look forward to.
I was waiting for these, Thought I would mention them:
Christopher Reeves Superman w/Hackmans Luther
Papillon w/ McQueen and Hoffman
African Queen w/ Bogart and Hepburn
Cool Hand Luke w/ Paul Newman
Great list James, lots of good pics :)
You mentioned Paul Newman, and of course I thought of Butch and Sundance...
Excellent list!
Shawshank redemption.
I was surprised this wasn’t on his list
Overrated
@@hikari69 if your like me and seen it at a young age it feels like a movie that was nothing like you’ve seen.
@@hikari69 how? Explain
@@scan8501 he can't, he was just trolling.
Now you do realize, according to rule #4217 section (b) subsection III of the internet, you must now review It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
he already did
Man I didn't want this to end... I could watch him briefly review a bunch of movies I've never seen, but should watch, forever.
There's a lot of movies from 93! Great list, man! Love all your vids
I am quite suprised that Who Framed Roger Rabbit isn't in your top 50
Roger Rabbit is kinda... Well, I guess if comedies are your thing... Well, there's also Jessica Rabbit... ;-D
I hear the video game is one of his favorites.
Wow I'm surprised to see the 7 faces of dr Lao. That has always been one of my very favorite movies and you don't hear it mentioned too often.
Really enjoyed waiting to see if the next choice was one of my favourites too.
Damn, James you brought the entire movie back to my mind with that impression at 5:59 😂👍👌
I can't wait to watch every single one of these that I haven't seen. Thank you.
When you've watched every Cinemassacre vid so many times that you can tell when the script has been reused....
What?

I like that you picked "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" as your #1 pick. It may not be my favorite but certainly one of my favorite comedies and you described its philosophical tone perfectly. And I totally agree with your favorite scene, the Jonathan Winters rampage! May be the funniest scene ever in all of filmdom!
Interesting choices. My top 5 : Alien, Nosferatu, Primer, Deliverance, Time Bandits

I UNDERSTOOD THAT REFERENCE
YEEESSS!!!!! I thought the same thing!
PUT HIM IN CONTROL
Yo where's Grown Ups 2?
Matt White! Retarded movie.
Fuck The Godfather, fuck Star Wars, fuck Pulp Fiction; Grown Ups 2 is the best movie of all time.
fork in the brain
CHAULKLET WASTED
Matt White! Grown Ups 2 sucked!
I know its a late answer, but i totally agree
LMAO "little song little dance Batman's head on a Lance" freaking great
"Never rub another man's Rhubarb"
What about lord of the rings trilogy i consider it as one of my favourite movies
Awww, I though number 1 was gonna be Paul Blart: Mall Cop :(
David Sjökvist Grown ups is the best movie ever *sarcasm*
David Sjökvist I thought it would be Freddy Got Fingered
lotius Freddy got fingered is the best movie ever. The talented cast, the amazing cinematography, the intricate plot, the quality humor and a strong message make it a legendary film
Paul Blart 2 was way better, don't be a fucking mainstream normie.
All wrong it's definitely the Boss Baby. Masterpiece right there.
"You don't pick your favorites. Your favorites pick you"
Nice pfp
That was an awesome list!" I love how he's got a vast knowledge of golden age movies.
Maybe you will gonna do video with your favourites Cartoons ?
You know Dofus? Wakfu? The Dofus movie?
Mateusz Kowalski I'd like to see Mike do that one
Mateusz Kowalski
Good Idea
Mateusz Kowalski He doesn't watch a lot of cartoons, or at the very least, he hasn't since the 80's. I think his favorites are Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Ghostbusters cartoon.
Mateusz Kowalski doubt it. He himself said he missed most of the 90's cartoons because he was into films at the time.
Rocky is good and everything, but have you seen Ricky 1? You're gonna LOVE that!
Look up Ricky 1 on UA-cam.
Great list James. I love all your picks my number 1 is the Blues Brothers, Action, Comedy and Musical all in one.

"Is Star Wars gonna die out? But no it isn't."
Boy that didn't age well..
Technically, it didn't die out. We DID a new trilogy, for better or worst.
You may have hated the new trilogy, but The Mandalorian shows there's still life in the franchise. Let's hope they dont screw it up.

Great list, James!
No Carpenter's The Thing? I'm disappointed.
I was waiting for it too! But hey, he's still got a great list.
Blasted Heath he already reviewed it for monster madness 09
James, you needed the Top List for each genre, as it appears the breadth of viewed films can only do justice to your choices, and honorable mentions left on the cutting room floor.
1. Donnie Darko
2. The Shining
3. Watership Down
4. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
5. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
6. Alien
7. Jurassic Park
8. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
9. Shaun of the Dead-Hot Fuzz-The Worlds End (Cornetto Trilogy)
10. Evil Dead 2/A Tale of Two Sisters/Battle Royale
Thank you for choosing the Michael Keaton Batman! I'll have to check out some of those b&w classics btw. I've never really given them a shot.
My favorite Disney Cartoons... Robin Hood AND The Sword in the Stone!!! Thought I was the only one...
*Braveheart*
*Blood In, Blood Out*
*Beetlejuice*
*Pee-Wee's Big Adventure*
*The Goonies*
*Flight Of The Navigator*
Hooray for PeeWee! Have you seen the new one? It's not Tim Burton, but the appreciation for his work on the original is definitely there and Paul Rubens's STILL GOT IT!
Great list, couldn't believe you had Dr Lau on your list as a kid i loved this movie, i managed to get this recently it was wonderful to watch it again.
Would totally watch an extended Rolfe review of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, just a gem of a film
